Announcement: Launch Softly, But Carry a Big Geek

N'Gai Croal

Welcome to the debut of our newest consumer tech blog, "American Geek." My name is N'Gai Croal, and I'm a senior writer for technology here at Newsweek who also pens the monthly "American Geek" column in our print edition. When my editors asked me to describe my proposed blog, here's what I told them:

The American Geek blog sits at the intersection of technology, culture and lifestyle. It will be accessible and knowing at once, clear without being condescending or appearing to dumb things down. The tone will sometimes be wry, sometimes playful, excited by the potential of technology but appropriately skeptical of individual product, with a bias towards products, services and culture that are a genuine fit with our lifestyles. Expect it to be somewhat tilted to the guy end of the tech and culture spectrum--notable Blu-Ray releases; geek-leaning films like "Watchmen" and "Star Trek," etc.--but not offensively so.

Looking this description over, I still don't think it captures everything that I'd like "American Geek" to be. My premise is that we are all geeks now, as we TiVo our television shows; listen to our personalized Pandora radio stations; and Twitter the day away by sharing snippets of our lives with a few hundred of our closest friends. That's the terrain that I and my colleagues who'll be joining me on this blog would like to map, bit by bit, day by day. So check back regularly for our updates, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

And now for an actual comment.  Ahem.  Anyway, I love the new blog N'Gai.  It took me a while to find it because I browse less these days and I must've missed any Twitter announcement.  I've always appreciated your writing and commentary, so I'm glad to see another forum for that to shine.

I like your initial description of the blog, but isn't "lifestyle" just a subset of "culture?"  I've always perceived lifestyle as the individual's expression of cultural influences.  So, for instance, I've often thought of my "lifestyle" existing at an intersection between technology and culture - basically the expression of what happens when technology interacts with the cultural influences that shape(d) my life.  Believe me, it's some crazy shizzit.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you do with the space.  I'll be sure to add it to my "all things N'Gai" list as I continue to stalk you from beyond the browser :-)  Good luck!

"ENIGMANETX wants every American with a vehicle, to have a comprehensive VAM

system  for “COMPLETE transportation safety” in critical emergency situations and  times.

The “voice activated” or remote activated wireless components within the VAMS

will continually scroll “in real time”, a text message around a “specific perimeter”

on the outside surface of the vehicle, train, ship or airplane.

Silent visually displayed streams of text delivers an instant and immediate communication

to the public and at the same time sending a summons message to pre-determined and

coordinated Law Enforcement agencies.

The VAMS concept came to me a few days after the 9/11 tragedy. Originally

I had thought of the scrolled text message idea for the Airline Industry….

I was thinking that if the USA AIR Force could have intercepted a visual text message from

the outside of the surface of the jetliner, other options for increasing human survival, would

have come into play.

The recent Hurricane and EarthQuake tragedies including their “aftermath disasters”, causing over

200k+ survivor evacuations are currently un-acceptable...the communications systems are virtually

non-existant  between survivors and rescuers, causing needless deaths and harm to people who

had already experienced suffering and victimization.

DOT, CalTrans, Fema, Border Patrols and Red Cross emergency services vehicles could stream

VAMS instant informative messages of shelter & safety to stricken communities “from a distance

and up-close and personal”

Helicopters that fly over survivors could have VAMS scrolled text messages underneath, which

gives the people instant  needed visual info, as to “what  has”  and “is happening, to  and for them”.

The VAMS concept targets the appeal and enthusiasm of “the everyday driver” like myself who knows

how critical timing is in an emergency situation. The perfect vehicle survival technology for everyday

drivers, as well as our first responders. GPS, GIS, Amber Alert LINKS.

VAMS MESSAGES are Clear and Simple. They can be sent from multiple wireless mediums: PDA’s,

Watches, Cell phones, and customized VAMS remote transponders!

• There is a Library of 8-10 Emergency text messages for Vehicles

including one for “ROAD Ragers”

• There is a Digital Camera embedded in the VAMS substrate component that records an image and dispatches it to the appropriate Law/ Police and All Rescue Authorities.

• Suggested Vehicles:

All American Cars

American Trucks, Vans, & Suv’s

Hummers, Volvo, Escalades

BMW

Mercedes Benz
