Back then, Chevy Chase would report that “Generalissimo

re: What Would Apple Be Without Steve Jobs?

I love Apple products, and I'm a 13 year Windows Programmer that started with Bill's beloved Visual Basic 1.0. It made my career. But I converted to OSX since the Vista fiasco and run Windows Apps on my OSX using VMWare Fusion without a hitch. Better the PCs ran Windows themselves. But this article is so very very true. Steve is an ass. A talented ass at that, but still smelly all the same.

Faulting Jobs for NOT leaving the computer industry, as Gates has done, to "help the poorest people in the world," is like faulting Oprah Winfrey for not being Mother Teresa. There are many paths to greatness. We should admire Gates for devoting his energies to health care, certainly. But there is a nobility too in a life-long devotion to a craft that one loves. Writing as a sixty-seven year old historian, still hard at work, still hoping that my best classes and my best books lie in the future, I have the greatest respect for a person who does not see fifty-four as old age. Steve Jobs has brought and is bringing technological wonders to millions of consumers and substantial profits to thousands of investors -- all on a salary during the past few years of only one dollar per year. Steve Jobs is one classy human being; so is Bill Gates -- alas, that cannot be said of the author of this sleazy article!

He is also, for whatever reason, the driving force behind Apple's success. Though he himself is not a technical guy it's his vision and motivational power that turned a moribund Apple into the powerhouse it is today. More than any business leader anywhere the fate of the company rests on his shoulders. This is all established fact.

Yes, it's your business how your health is doing but not when the fate of the company, it's employees, and millions of stockholders is also riding on it! As the author points out this is not about Jobs and his personal struggle against cancer, it's about the fate of a giant corporation. That a bunch of life sucking journalists are ready to jump all over his poor, thin frame is just a necessary evil. I don't blame him for hating that but he owes the rest of us better.

How you ever seen how bad OSX is at security and stability?

Have you seen how often macbooks have hardware failures?

Try Googleing macbookrandomshutdown syndrom and then tell me which company makes crappy products.

And yes Jobs is an egomaniac and will take apple with him to the grave.

But I wouldn't draw sharp distinctions between Jobs and Bill Gates. It's true that Microsoft handled CEO succession much more smoothly, and Gates and Ballmer have always been smarter businessmen than anyone who's ever run Apple. (How else could they have foisted their mediocre software on the world?) But how soon we forget the antitrust case, Gates' appalling video deposition, and the company's evasions of responsibility and remedies. Jobs and Gates are both spoiled narcissists, though Jobs at least had the humbling experience of some years in the wilderness.

Now you need to attempt to put down one of the founding fathers of the computer industry? You're quite a man Daniel. You and newsweek should be really proud of yourself.
