China's censorship and decades of propaganda have prevented the vast majority of Chinese people from knowing the facts about Tibetan-Sino relations and history. Most Chinese respond with hyper nationalistic denial and high emotions when presented with facts about Tibet. They do not need to. Real Tibetan autonomy should be no more threatening to China than is the current autonomy of Hong Kong. The fact is that, regardless of history, China's policies in Tibet create and sustain ethnic hatred and instability. China can have the stability it wants but it must sincerely talk to the Dalai Lama. Whether China has the greatness of spirit to do so remains to be seen.

"It is significant to note that Tibet had experienced neither famines nor peasant rebellions prior to the Chinese take-over in 1950 and had no police or army of any significance". The Status of Tibet. Since then it has experienced famine, rebellions and pervasive army presence.

Comment: Are the Americans that good also? The Americans killed the native Indians who lived peacefully in this land and build the country America. The Americans like to play politics. In history, and for a long time, these Americans have been manipulating countries, races and people for their own advantages. There are lots of racism, discrimination, prejudices and biase going on in this country. See how these Americans (for example, the white races) abuse the black people for over fifty years until the black went to rebellion. See how the Americans tell lies, allure the people from other countries to migrate to United States, who make a miserable life in United States, being a seven or eight class citizen (who is the first class citizen in United states? Tell me. ); trying to make the immigrants work for low level and low pay jobs. Luckily many of the immigrants are highly educated and smart, who have good jobs and earn a good living in their own countries, and can compare and tell the differences and see what the reality is in America. The Americans abuse the immigrants' rights and rights of other races / countries (whilst they always point finger to other countries of abusing human rights); commit adultery (have many sexual partners); exercise homosexual (which is against the Bible), kill people for power and money (see history); being hypocritic , pretend that they are angels but in behind they act the same ugliness; I point out this because I want to say that in reality there are good people / elements and bad people / elements everywhere, all over the world, no matter in Africa, in Asia, in Australia, in China, in Europe, in Japan, in Latin America, in Tibet, in United States, in any country, ANYWHERE ALL OVER THE WORLD. JUST DO NOT STEREOTYPE / DO NOT MAKE GENERALIZATION AGAINST CERTAIN RACES, NATIONS, NOR COUNTRIES. Pay attention to the particular deed / event happened and blame the event to a particular group / party of people who make / create it, but not everyone, nor the whole nation / country. So, Dala Lama is such a great guy. He is immaculate, My foot! Did he ever got money from the CIA? Tibet was a feudal system and the people lived like slaves.It is great for the west to criticise China, which is not perfect. But, who is the country that gropped the 2 nuclear bombs. Hahaha, not China. How many people died in the debacle Iraq? did the holy man ever say anything about this?

I would like to ask Melinda Liu, have you verified the death toll in the Sichu in Aptil 3? "According to reports..." is more likely "According to unsubstantiated rumors..." Melinda Liu's view on China's handling of Tibet has been particularly venomous ever since the Chinese authority rejected her application for a press trip to Tibet (just read her essays chronologically). She is indignant because she is the president of foreign journalist in Beijing! Hello, President Liu, stop your self-hating and white-pleasing rants on China's handling of Tibet. I am sure you impressed your all-important white boss and your domineering white husband/boyfriend (what else?!).

Tibet has been a part of China. people shouldn't define a country depending on ethic group. And we won't give up any a part of country just because the least minority who lost their previous privilege claim they are independent. I believe we chinese can solve the problem by ourselves. The reason that many people feel Tibetans want to be independent is many of those people can only learn about Tibet through those Tibetans overseas. And many media only report what they say. It seems they intend to believe what they say.But those Tibetans are just minority. Most common Tibetans don't hope to be independent.

It is so ridiculous that there are so many westerners pay great attention to Chinese human right. There are so many other countries need their sincere care, like many African tiny countries.

When japan invaded other Asian contries they said "Great East Asia Coprosperity Sphere". When Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China and burned The Old Summer Palace in 1900, maybe they firmly believed they were to save Chinese from under the cruel regime of emperor. Tibet naturally belongs to Tibetans, but it also belongs to China, and has been doing you since in the past 5-600 years, just like Texas belongs to USA and Scotland belongs to Briton. Is that hard to understand?

Are there any nations in present world that do not recognize Tibet as a part of China? Has Tibet been an independent country in any time in the recent 500 years?

The answer is a blank NO. Do please consult any serious history books (and you cannot miss it), and no one can deny it. So all the talks about Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959 and the related fuss is simply nonsense.

In regards to Human right in Tibet, I would like to say that few countries in the present world have adopted a more liberal policy to its minority people as China. Please compare Tibetans to the Indians in USA. This is not s issue of whether the political system is democratic or not, it's an attitude to some culture alien. Both USA and many European countries had black slaves for many while the country were themselves a democracy – the ruling race. In contrast, China has had the tradition to be tolerant and friendly to its minority and other people, and almost never wiped a minority race like the USA solders did in their own country, and are still doing so in present Iraq. One example is that Tibetan language has been taught in all the primary and high schools for Tibetan Children and widely use in the region all the time. This seems to be natural, but not so in many places of the world. E.G., the minority people Curds in Turkey are not allowed to use their own language, and for decades they are denied of having the right to be a different people. They are simply Turks of ‘a slight different species’. Nevertheless, such obvious abused of human right has never been noticed, not to mention critisized, by the USA or the Western mass media.

Why they behaved so differently? The reason can only be, that because Turkey is a close ally to the USA, and is extremely useful for it to keep the Near East ‘at bay’ on its terms. So human or inhuman is in reality not an issue for the West MassMedia. It's the closeness, and usefulness to the USA and the West, that really matters. And all it is so shameful and disgusting!

During the riot at Lasha, some innocent Chinese had been killed. You have not mentioned anything about this. The Dala Lama did not mention about these too. Just like he never mentioned about the invasion of Iraq and the million of Iraqi killed by the American action. Melilnda Liu should hang her head in shame if she has any integrity left.

China's human rights abuses are "staggering": the detention of hundreds of thousands of people, including political activists, for "reeducation" programs, and forced labor camps; and the liberal use of the death penalty in China -- including for political prisoners -- which makes China the site of 8 of every 10 government administered executions carried out in the world!

It is clear that the Communists can't be trusted at all and they have a bag full of tricks to fool not only Tibetans but the people of China with a state-controlled press. The solution is a free Tibet. There is no doubt that a sovereign Tibet would be a savior state not only for Tibetans but for all ethnic groups of China who have nowhere to go if they disagree with the CPC. A free Tibet would be such a free democratic heaven and haven.

Why is the Dalai Lama given so much importance , particularly in the USA ?

He is always received as a head of State , visiting the White House and the US Congress . Why ?

Actually he is a very minor figure in the world scene . He only represent a very small minority of Tibetans monks who are mainly in exile . He is certainly not the ” Pope ” of Buddhist .

This remind me of the old Russian aristocrats who were in exile in France and the US, hoping to restore the Tsar in Russia . Fat chance…..

Why is Nancy Pelosi went out of her way into the back country of India , to meet the Dalai Lama ? What did she has to gain by it , and who is the lobby behind it ?

An ungrateful group of Buddhist monks are rebelling in a distant province of my country. I have done my best to deal with the matter quietly, but they have managed to get the leaders of Western countries involved. President Bush is demanding that I negotiate with their leader. I cannot give credibility to the instigator of a provincial rebellion without encouraging mutinies elsewhere, but I do not want to sour our relations with important countries, especially not with the Olympic Games in our capital this summer. What should I do?

Dear Bothered,

You might apply Spengler's Iron Law of History: stick around long enough, and you turn into a theme park. The province in question has an ancient and colorful culture with a devoted Western following among spiritual tourists, including a number of prominent Hollywood actors. It appeals to Western nostalgia for a non-existent past far from the anxieties of modern life. You can't afford to allow a province to secede, of course. Why not change the name of the provincial capital to "Shangri-La" and say that it isn't a province at all, but only a theme park? No one cares about a rebel theme park. Let the monks run the place, and give them the gate receipts as well as the food and beverage concession. They can spin their prayer wheels all day and get paid for it.

It's all about money, after all. As Abraham Lustgarten wrote of your rebels in the Washington Post on March 23, "Their culture has been packaged for tourism. Business is booming. But they aren't getting any of the bounty. This, more than violations of human rights and religious freedom, is what fueled the riots."

It may seem outrageous to turn a substantial chunk of territory over to an amusement park, but the idea has been floated before, of all places in the United States. New York Times columnist Nicholas D Kristof proposed to turn part of 10 American states into a theme park called "Buffalo Commons", thus "rescuing the rural Great Plains by returning much of it to a vast Buffalo Commons. The result would be the world's largest nature park, drawing tourists from all over the world to see parts of 10 states alive again with buffalo, elk, grizzlies and wolves" (October 29, 2003). That was before the boom in wheat prices, of course. Farming pays better than tourism these days. Still, if Americans can take seriously the idea of turning North Dakota into a Wild West theme park, they hardly can object to the same treatment for the province in question.

There is no shame in running a theme park. Some of my favorite cities have been theme parks for quite some time, for example Venice, the Las Vegas of the 17th century, or Vienna, where instead of Mickey and Goofy, you meet Mozart and Maria Theresa. That appears to be the main function of the British monarchy after the Diana business.

The monks do not practice a religion so much as a sort of folkloric animism that is out of place in the modern world. That is what makes them appear so charming to the spiritual tourists of the West. Attractions of this sort aren't rational, and there is no point arguing about it. Give the tourists and the monks what they want, and promote the exchange of currency for a spiritual frisson.

Native Hawaiians that advocates sovereignty locked the gates of a historic palace Wednesday in downtown Honolulu.

Protest leader Mahealani Kahau said the group doesn't recognize Hawaii as a U.S. state. Supporters planned to keep the protest peaceful and if evicted would return later, she said.

The group is one of several Hawaiian sovereignty organizations in the islands seeking to regain independence, which was formally annexed as the 50th U.S. state in 1959.

What we saw are the Tibeten rioters looting, beating, burning and killing. There are so many innocent people killed and injured. I don't know why the government didn't resort to force. All these rioters should be sent to prison and brought to justice.
