I don't understand why the US media keep fixating on human rights in China which Chinese people think they've already got.Personally, Tibetan Activists can't be called human rights protesters. They are those people who jump out, saying: Hey, China, I want a land from you. If you don't give me, I'll kill the child who is on vacation in the Potala Palace after 12 months' partime job( working 8 hours a day earning less than $6 in KFC).

2 questions for them and for all to think about.

first, why dun they do these protests in public?

possible excuse1: they worry the crowds will be angry with their behaviors and beat them

possible excuse: they worry about the police? (but, if the Chinese police are "every where, monitoring everyting at anytime" as what the western articles describe, can they escape in this "in-house" way?)

second, why do they choose the olympic period to do the protests while before that they kept silence?

possible excuse1: they are hoping the foreign journalists can provide some kind of "protections", (but questions are, if they dun do this protest, why do they need "protections"; or shall I guess before this protests, they have already made sorts of crimes, bribes? murdering? and doing in this way to look for a way to escape?

possible excuse2: they are hired to do the performance? if they want to talk about freedom, the audience should firstly the public rather than the "foreigh journalists" (if China's press freedom is really as poor as the western world describes "can't access the western media" then how can the public know their protests? aren't they loosing their real meaning of "protests"?)

the 3rd question is for all to think about:

are any sorts of "unregistered churches" legal in your countries? especiall those western developed countries. Must your countries' churches be registered or not? I'm very curious about this. thanks.

This graffiti in a hotel room is proof. As a Chinese I'm angery at such behavior and dismayed at Newsweek's role in sponsoring their publicity. What is worse is the whole monkey business is conducted under a cloak of rigtheousness. In fact, you're giving freedom a very bad name.

The world should not forget that this Olympics event is the PEOPLE of China smiling and reaching out. Visitors, Newsweek reporters included, should have the decency to recognize the extraordinary hospitality the country has shown. While Newsweek is showing the mischievous fun with winks and nods, the Chinese people are watching the world and forming their opinions.

Anyone genuinely concerned in creating a better world should now how to behave responsibly.

Most of us from the U.S. will be the first to criticize our country's reckless, stupid actions around the world for decades now. I guess being able to take it only comes with the freedom to give it.

"Giving freedom a bad name" Elex? What in the world are you talking about. You spit empty criticism that wreaks of a middle school inferiority complex. If China were as strong as all of you say, you would be able to take some criticism without reacting so emotionally.

Why do Americans focus so much on human rights? Because the one thing uniting us all around the world, no matter what country we're from, is that we are all HUMANS. We are humans before we are Olympic Athletes, human before we are Chinese, human before we are protesters and human before we are journalists.

What better to focus all the might of our magnifying glasses on that what binds us all?

Stop vituperating. Keep calm and be graceful. People are different. Never let politics be a nation thing. On many aspects Americans and Chinese are friendly to each other and get along very well in our daily life. It's just an article which is of some journalists' personal view and is far from serious to set a war between American and Chinese people.

As a matter of fact, China's sovereignty over the Tibet region is no less legitimate than that of the United States over Hawaii, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. (And please do not feed me those "Beacon of Freedom and Democracy" line of jokes to make a distinction, seriously.)

Therefore, if you people have the slightest common sense, you' d know that it's as ridiculous and self-deceiving to dream of Tibetan indepedence as one would wish the afore mentioned US states to declare independence.

Even though the intelligence of the US public and policy makers often fall below respectable levels and rather go into the repulsive if not hopelessly idiotic end of the spectrum, I still bet the writers of this article are probably sane enough to understand the above issue somewhat beyond its surface, enough to now that Tibet Is Part of China,

So the way I see it, the only logical explanation of you coming up with this garbage article is: you have to make a living and this so-called Tibet issue is just the trend of the day, it catches eyeballs and serves to motivate and mobilize the apes for someone above to get a morsel at the bargain table at least. Bue the in my opinion, your behavior is essentially no different from the hookers in Las Vegas, who change dresses just to stimulate the johns' blasé appetite. I don't wish you'd also feel equally fulfilled at the thriving patronage.

In one sentence: either being stupid or whoring of information is not respectable.

And just by the way, that idiot protestor trashed the hotel room and he needs to pay for the damage.

It is so sad to read your article, the tone you carried, the words you chose. I just wonder how your parents or grandparents would think about your article if they read it, hope they understand english. You don't have national pride, you have no sense of right or wrong. You might think it is funny to use the title "Let the protests begin", which shows where you stand in isses like Tiget and Beijing Olympics.

Let me tell you, such an article is a trash, it won't do anything in front of 2008 Beijing Olympics. Tibet is part of China. THAT IS A FACT!!!! We Chnese don't care who says what!! Be smart, be Chinese, stop writing such stupid things.

First of all, it’s totally disgusting trying to slandering China by linking Olympics to politics. Will Newsweek publishing Abu Graid tortures next time when you report Olympics staging in the US? Second, trying to put positive spins to hotel vandalism like this and appraise such activities shows just how low the moral of the western media has become! Will Melinda Liu and other editors of Newsweek appraise my action if I go doing the vandal crime of painting on their office wall and putting up signs in their home’s front yard? For the sake of playing geo-politics, new Newsweek would even publishing trash like this and appraise the civil crimes and vandalism as some kind of heroic action, this is just shows that this author and all those in Newsweek publishing this are the scumbags of mankind!

What they want with the name of "freedom" is just to pull Tibet back to helot age and regain their rich lives. Tibet problem is not as simple as you Americans think, if you want to know the real truth, you'd better to go to the Tibet and watch by yourselves.
