Three years is ridiculous. Protesters who custard pie officials in this country barely get a few weeks, and military and contractors who do much worse walk or serve about the same as the shoe thrower. Often less as far as I can tell.

The man did what I would have done had I met him, he insulted him. It's not like he was trying to hurt him with a shoe for God's sake. It's like if Bush walked up to me a tried to shake my hand I would turn away and say no thank you. Maybe that insults him but he certainly isn't hurt. The Iraqi government should give him a break. His family needs him.

Torturing a fool like Zeidi does no one any good. No one was actually injured by his idiocy and no one was seriously endangered. A fine example and deterrent would be to fine him $10,000.00 for gross disturbance of the peace and the costs he generated that accrued to the Iraqi government. That should go a long way to prevent a repeat performance or an attempt by others to copy this.

Crimes against Christians, Jews, and other Moslems? My strong suggestion is for you to innocently camp out in a field about 20 miles south of Ashkelon and receive incoming random missiles and explosives from your beloved innocents in Gaza. You should be well within their range. If rockets from Baja California started to fall near San Diego with anything near the regularity that Hamas stuff rains down on Israelis, we would occupy and probably depopulate a swath of Mexico at least 150 miles south of our border, and you would be one of the first to cheer the operation. We already fought one war of aggression with them with far less provocation. Are you suggesting that the U. S. give back California because of our past misdeeds?

I spent 6 months as an advisor to the Provincial Police Chief in Al Anbar. You have to understand the significance that shoes, especially the bottom of the shoe, have in Iraqi society. A good analogy would be: what would the U.S. do if someone threw a pile of dog crap (roughly equal to a shoe to an Iraqi) on Ahmendinijad (a reviled foreign leader) when he was in New York City? I think the sentence is just, and the Iraqis I keep in touch with agree.

Australia, Canada, Sweden, UK, probably every major country are running stories about how shabbily Brown was treated on his visit to the White House except the US media. Hmm I wonder why. I think it's hilarious that the journalist and others in Iraq are upset about the sentence he received. Let him go to a Saddam press conference and hurl a shoe in protest. I'll bet the treatment would have been a little different back then.

Zeidi later told the court that he couldn't bear listening to Bush claim success in Iraq while all the reporter could think of was the monumental human loss and suffering of the last six years. He said he viewed Bush as an occupier. Iraqis and other Arabs have hailed him as a national hero. It's probably the majority view, but there's a nuance, too.

I'll assume the shoe thrower was one of those who were on Sadam's good side, hence his anger at Bush would be understandable. If not then he needs to look in the miror and take responsibility for the mess that Iraq became. Those who supported the removal of Sadam needed to step up and put their lives on the line to stop the insurgency at its very beginning. If this is truely how the majority of Iraqies feel, they can go to hell.

We should leave those "crazy" Arabs alone, let Them kill each other, No visas for any of Them to "visit" the West (with very few exceptions). Then We, with the help of the Israel intelligence, get whatever is needed on them as far as Nuclear armement sites are concerned & monitor/verify them as if "searching a needle in a haystack" inspections. Inspections of any suspected site(s) denied, then bomb the site(s), wipe it/them out using Our stealth aviation assets.

As far as leaving Iraq, OK ! but keep a very large number of Our troups on Iraq's borders to avoid infiltrations of Iranian elements, Syrian and the likes ...

I think the sentence does not fit the crime. However, I'm thinking as an American not an Iraqi where the bottoms of people shoes convey a serious message to them. I guess in the end its ironic because as so many american wished to do the same to Bush, in the end it is conveying due process which he would not have recieved under Sadaam. So the final thought is I think as an adult he should have known that there would be consequences to his actions.

The shoe thrower got a thrashing and has spent enough time in jail already. This is enough punishment for his prank against Bush. The latter's crime against humanity and violation of human rights and the US Constitution has not been, and most likely will not be tried for his crimes. Yet the shoe thrower has been given a stiff sentence for his deed, Bush on the other hand, got away scot-free for his. What kind of justice is this?

If so many Iraqi's wanted to do what al-Zeidi did, they never would have voted in elections and their country never would be where it is today. Businesses who never would have opened under Saddam are opened and thriving. Total villages aren't being destroy and completely wiped off the face of the earth because of Saddam. Supporters of al-Zeidi aren't in the majority, their a minority. Our troops never could have stayed one day in Iraq if a majority of Iraqi's felt like al-Zeidi did. Al-Zeidi is not Iraq. He's what is left over from the Saddam era.

good points...I think that while his actions should be punished, we can't fully understand what it's like to have over a hundred thousand of our citizens dead, and then have Bush come in, while attacks are STILL happening, and watch him claim that things are great. We can look at what happened from over here and say that he was way out of line. But put yourself in his shoes (haha). al-Zeidi needs to understand that it's now legal for him to protest - something that would have NEVER happened under Baath rule - his time and place were just WAY off. But lets be serious - how many of you wouldn't mind throwing a shoe or two or a kitchen sink at George Bush???
