This is fascinating. The hypothesis also seems to tally with the notion that when we're depressed we tend to remember things less well. Depression and stress suppress neurogenesis.

There's also mounting evidence that specific types of challenging brain exercises are good for stimulating neurogenesis and improving cognitive function. The key ingredients have been identified as close focus and attention on the task, as well as a sense of achievement or reward from the task.
