What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday, the weekly poll in the Journal du Dimanche had Nicolas Sarkozy well ahead of Ségolène Royal, with a six-point spread, 53-47, in the second round. This week there's no air between them at all, statistically speaking. It's a dead heat for the first round, with the candidates even at 28 percent each. In the second round Sarkozy gets 50.5 percent against 49.5 percent for Royal - well within the poll's margin of error. The conservative daily Le Figaro nonetheless tells us that this is the 29th poll in a row putting the interior minister on top.
