Anyone who's into videogames knows that Sony Computer Entertainment America is launching the PlayStation 3 on November 17. In preparation, the company is also redesigning its Web site to better inform gamers and to take advantage of the PS3's widescreen browser. We got an exclusive sneak peek at the site--see the attached pictures--and got some additional scoop via e-mail from Josh Meighen, SCEA's senior manager for direct and online marketing.

How long has this redesign been in the works?

We're constantly evolving the site. At the beginning of the year, we decided that 2006 would hold two major releases. The first, launched in May 2006, was timed with E3 [the Electronic Entertainment Expo] and included an updated navigation structure with multiple entry points to console and game content. This latest November release will be a complete overhaul of the site, built on the dedicated efforts of scores of gaming and Web die-hards--most of whom haven't slept since about February.

What are some of the site's new features? Have you incorporated any Web 2.0 functionality?

Drawing inspiration from the PlayStation 3, we've gone widescreen with the display, supporting a 1024x768 browser size and cinematic game imagery. Additionally, we've exponentially increased access to the available imagery and videos for games through a custom built 'Media & Downloads' area. With a flash video player present on thousands of site pages, we show game action throughout the site. AJAX-like functionality and robust searching tools allow users to refine requests without even having to reload the page. Finally, three tiers of system content--each with a deeper level of information--allow users to target and immediately find exactly what they need.

Are there specific versions of the site for PS3 and/or PSP?

With our creative design built around the consoles and the games themselves, we separated the major parts of the site into three main sections--one for each current platform (PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 3). Intrepid Web users and serious gamers will find elements of the console design present in each of these areas.

What features can we look forward to in the coming months?

We plan to keep the evolution going! One thing we're focused on doing is allowing users to embed our videos in their own sites. As more PlayStation 3 games are developed, we look forward to offering more HD videos and images from these games. Additionally, we are continually working with our elite gaming group--the Gamer Advisory Panel--to identify new site content and features that will help them become better, more educated, even more excited gamers (although we're not sure these guys can actually get more excited than they already are.)

Sustainable buildings are virtuous, but they can be ugly. Only a few designs are truly great.
