Despite his many accomplishments--chief among them, a scoring average that has risen every year he's been in the NBA--the Washington Wizards' quirky point guard Gilbert Arenas should be used to being snubbed by now. After all, his jersey number is zero, which he chose because it was the amount of playing time his detractors told him he'd receive at the University of Arizona. Arenas wasn't selected to last year's NBA All-Star game; rather, he was named as a replacement for the injured Indiana Pacers star Jermaine O'Neal. And even though he was named to the list of players for USA Basketball's Olympic team along with such luminaries as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, he was left off the roster of players selected to compete at last summer's World Championships in Japan.
But even though rejection is practically his middle name, Arenas--who is such an avid gamer that he sponsors a Halo team --was still a bit depressed about not having a PlayStation 3 or a Wii automatically bestowed upon him. Writes Arenas on his blog: "Man, I couldn't get it. I stood outside no hours and got nothing. That's when you sit in your room and try to use your celebrityism. I didn't get nothing. I knew I should have called and said I was D-Wade. 'Um, hello, this is D-Wade - This is LeBron - Can I come over there and get one of them?' Then I would have had one." So if any Sony or Nintendo reps are reading this, don't force Gil onto eBay. Hook a brotha up.
