Geek Out: PS3 Goes To the Dogs

N'Gai Croal

While tooling through the Playstation 3's Xross Media Bar interface, those of you fortunate enough to score one may have noticed the "Install Other OS" option under "Settings"--->"System Settings." That's because Sony Computer Entertainment designed the PS3 to be an open platform so that other operating systems could be installed on the machine besides the default Game OS. Linux is already a go, with Fedora Core 5 up and running more than a week ago, and Terrasoft, which worked closely with Sony on their implementation, released their code for Yellow Dog Linux on Monday night. And while we don't expect Mac OS X or Windows Vista to directly support the PS3 anytime soon, one person posted a YouTube clip of Windows XP running on Linux running on a PS3. It's all pretty cool--and extremely gearhead-ish--but we'll happily let these die-hards blaze the trail with their PS3s for a while before we follow suit.

PROJECT GREEN
