Hype: Ever Wonder What the Staff of Level Up Sounds Like? Here's Your Chance To Find Out.

N'Gai Croal

For the longest time, listening to the sound of our own voice made us cringe. So when it came time to listen to the two podcast appearances we made last month, we weren't expecting to listen to more than five minutes or so before pulling out our Shure earphones and muttering "The horror! The horror!" while staring off into space, Brando-style. But we found both podcasts surprisingly listenable. Now, whether that's because of sheer egocentricity, or because certain frequencies have become inaudible to our 34-year-old ears, we'll let you be the judge.

We appeared first on the March 9th edition of Ziff-Davis' "1UP Yours," which is the only videogame podcast that we listen to on a regular basis. The four hosts--Garnett Lee, John Davison, Luke Smith and Shane Bettenhausen, with Andrew Pfister working the mixing board--occasionally like to work a little blue, so we don't recommend this 'cast for tender ears. But the boys know what they're talking about, they've got a tangible rapport with strong, distinct personalities, and the drive-time morning show vibe gives "1UP Yours" a propulsive energy that eludes most other podcasts. It was the highlight of our Game Developers Conference, and the amount of vodka consumed during the taping has in no way affected that assessment. Take our word for it.

Our second appearance was on the GDC Radio Gamasutra Podcast, which consisted of a one-on-one interview by Tom Kim. We're normally the ones asking the questions, so it was more than a bit disconcerting to have our own work subjected to such a close reading and analysis, right down to our vocabulary usage. That said, Kim is a terrific, meticulous interviewer, and he pushed us to talk about a wide range of topics, including some that we've yet to address on our blog--most interestingly, that of race and games. We'd like to thank the staffs of "1UP Yours" and GDC Radio for having us on their respective shows, we urge you to give them a listen, and, as always, we look forward to reading your thoughts in our message boards.
