N'Gai Croal
@EvilBaby:
You've almost got it. As I've said, a GH2 or GH3 guitar is useable in Rock Band for Xbox 360. However, a Rock Band guitar is not useable in GH2 or GH3 (by all accounts). Activision should release a patch that remedies this. I think it would promote goodwill and it would get me to buy the GH3 disc.
It's awfully strange when you consider that, from all accounts, Harmonix did code GH2 for the Xbox 360. So why the Rock Band guitars wouldn't be made to work with that title are beyond me. Then if they only didn't work with GH3, we'd see an obvious bias on Activision's part. There is also the slim possibility that Activision ordered a title update to block Rock Band guitars on GH2, but this seems unlikely.
All guitars should work with all games as much as possible. I could see PS2/PS3 problems, but I do not know enough about Sony's hardware to comment.
I just registered on Newsweek (*gag*) for the sole reason of being able to comment on this blog (I've been lurking for weeks). I hope you're happy, Mr. Croal.
As for the GH/Rock Band nonsense, and in reply to all the commentary below, I believe the issue should be handled by Valve customer support. Please clean out your desks. There will be a going away party with cake.
That doesn't make any sense. This is a quote from the makers of rock band:
"As is the case with the Microsoft Xbox360, we believe that Sony PLAYSTATION 3 users should be able to use the peripheral of their choice with Rock Band. We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so."
It seems at least that the makers of Rock Band think that your GH controler should be usuable with Rock Band. If that's not the case, then it means that they have been forced to patch RB and remove functionality.....which makes me cry
