N'Gai Croal
I actually feel sorry for the man. Mr. White makes some valid points (notably, the crisis of film criticism in the face of a proliferation of available opinions) but gets so caught up in championing certain films and rejecting others that he comes off exactly like the Internet fanboys he detests. And how rich is it to accuse film criticism of elitism with an article like this?
Besides, I really can't take any critic seriously who applies the words "mendacious, immoral and socially retrograde and irresponsible" to anything that's even slightly morally challenging. How would the man react to GTA IV, I wonder?
Thanks for the link to the Armond essay.
Of all my friends and family, I'm about the only one who believes that 'criticism' is fundamentally important and valid. But man oh man, Armond really puts that thought to the test. If that was his best 'save criticism' speech, I think we need to find a new standard bearer. Maybe you're up to it, N'Gai?
