Great work on this, loving the detail.

BTW, do you suppose the owner of the Canon at the front of the frame in your second shot will be annoyed when he realises his camera doesn't have any batteries in it, or is one of those cables for AC?

Keep up the good work, this blog is camera nirvana for snappers like me.

There are a lot of Olympic photo blogs out there this time around, but this one stands out and this specific post is why. The details of how you made the photos and the technical setup...that's the stuff that we don't get anywhere else. Not to mention the photos themselves! Don't stop doing what you are doing. We are loving it!

Your pictures are excellent and it's great to have an insight into how they are made. I watched the final and saw those rows of cameras and wondered which ones belonged to you, Mike or Donald. I also noticed all the pool guys getting close-ups of Usain Bolt by the clock with his world record time. I looked, but couldn't see any photographers who didn't have pool vests on.

Intrigued to hear that the Chinese use Engligh english as opposed to American (chips, etc). I would have assumed otherwise.

I read your blogs every day... You make me feel like I snuck back stage to a rock concert only to find that the rock stars (that'd be you, Donald and Mike) welcomed me with open arms showing me around the place (that'd be your detailed explanations of all of it) and gave me front row seats.... (that'd be your pictures). Good luck for the rest of the trip.... especially ordering food!

thank you, another nice post.

I loved your describtion about remotes etc, and I really appreciated the photo of your positions, as I requested you. :-)

I really enjoyed watching all remote cameras, and congratulations for the tilt-shift photo you took, it's so nice!

Thank you again.

The TS shot is awesome. Jube + wr time +100m sign tells the story. The TS effect just emphasizes this even more. Having checked out your website it is a classic shot of yours. Really enjoyed your recent blog entry about your evolution as a sport shooter and how you shoot is often influenced by who you shoot for. Newsweek is to be congratulated for giving you guys freedom to shoot. You guys must be getting physically spent with the long hours and pressure of getting shot.

By the way if you haven't checked out. HK of SI underwater shot of Phelps and Cavic touching the line is almost as sick as your TS shot.

Thanks for all the great information on remotes. Have a question about the underwater remotes in the pool, how are these triggered? Radio waves do not do well in water so seems pocket wizards are out. Are they hard wired?

Thinking about this after seeing Heinz Kluetmeier underwater photos of Phelps 100 meter butterfly finish. Seeing the setup you showed of cameras wired with ethernet cables at the 100 meter dash, are underwater remotes typically set up this way as well so images can be accessed long before you could get back into the pool to pull the camera/card?

thanks, really enjoying your images and writing.

cheers, Dave

Thanks for another wonderful post and some fantastic images.

I attended an equestrian event here in the U.K. today, there were 3 photographers in attendance who were invited by the organisers and given priority positions, but there were another 2 photographers who were also covering the event (with the organisers permission), I have to say, even though they were handicapped when it came to position, the ingenuity and creativity created some superb shots, most of which were much better than the invited photographers, who had taken excellent quality shots, but they all seemed to have the same or similar shots.

Have to say this is the first games I have seen were Nikon camera's seem to be more prolific than Canon ;)

Look forward to more great posts.

Regards

Can you tell me (or us) what your typical day is covering the Olympics i.e. Get up 6am, get equipment ready etc.

Also how do you decide what events to cover?, and what events will you cover tommorow (18/08/09)?

Kind regrads

Every one wish to have the pool position & there r many photographers...

& like the track & field venue there r some events you can't shoot it like for example the throwing events (only with the pool can shoot it)...

ither they solve the problem to orgnise the pool positions for all photographers (& I don't think it will be a big problem) because any photographer reach the olympics he/she is an experinced photographer & trustable...

& I don't have to be under a big agency to get the pool position...

& the problem is everything has been controled by the money & the huge money that the agencys paid that there staff photographers get the best positions!!!

& Do all photographers in the world have to join a major agency so he can photograph the events without any problems????

Has photo industry became R u under this agency or the other one?

& if u r not under a major agency r u like a half photographer???

R they pushing us to lose our jobs so the company I work for buy from them all the time insted of the photos I provide to them?

Do we have to suffer in every major event because of that???
