They're strange bedfellows: the old guard of broadcast journalism, the new guard of Media 2.0. But Twitter was atwitter with links and posts to YouTube videos of Walter Cronkite's most famous broadcasts yesterday -- check out an Associated Press aggregation of those Tweets here, or watch clips below:
Cronkite was the first to break news of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in the spring of 1968.
Cronkite interviewed the president at Hyannisport on Labor Day weekend in 1963.
Perhaps his most famous broadcast, Cronkite breaks the news of President Kennedy's assassination.
Russian acts as if the loss of real journalism started with the election of Obama, which is laughable. Real journalism has been dying ever since ratings creeped into the news divisions boardroom decision making process about 20 years ago.
It was during the Clinton years, that the news media became scandal mongers and launched entire networks devoted to covering nothing but scandal.
Then during the Bush run up to war, the news media no longer knew how to cover intensely serious subject like war and should we be going, and let themselves be bullied into silent submission by the overzealous white house. instead of being the nation's watchdog, the media became the Bush White house lapdog. Only after GWB's war went bad and the public turned on him, did the media finally figured out they were supposed to be CRITICALLY questioning the WH.
And now during Obama's brief stay on the WH, they are having a hard time finding the proper position to take on covering a very popular president.
Cronkite was the golden era of journalism. I just recall it as a kid, but, that was when journalism did not care about ratings.
"We have lost critical reporting."
You're JUST NOTICING NOW???!!!!!
Maybe that's the REAL problem - it's a buyers market and no one cares - people only hear what they want to hear and be told what they want to hear. So I wonder more what Cronkite has thought about the lack of appetite for becoming informed by those who consume media - apparently today's market only wants fake news, heavy partisanship performances by those pretending to be fair or balanced or delivering the news in general, and its all meant to be an entertaining circus just like so called reality tv. Why? Because affiliates make the most $ during their local news and the networks get their best bang for buck airing reality TV rather than quality programming or straight delivery of news & reporting without all the opinionated commentary.
yeah chelseafran, great job sweetie, you ran out on the soccer field and tripped and fell and we are so proud of you anyway. lets clap and clap and calp like we did when you were four and we celebrated mediocrity for you so that you didnt cry. you did a great job because you showed up and you tried and trying is all that matters so we applaud your effort even though it really wasn't successful, but that doesnt matter only that you tried. Because in this day and age we invite anybody to say anything even though it may not make any sense or be so filled with fallacies as to be a joke.
