Why Did Eminem Dis Mariah Carey?

Seth Colter Walls
Even if you're a total cynic, there's something puzzling about Eminem's latest dis track -- in which he reiterates his claim that he once had some bad sex with Mariah Carey, before she met her current husband, Nick Cannon. It's a claim Carey denied while also poking fun at Em in her recent video for "Obsessed," the first single from a forthcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. For reasons having apparently little to do with that awful title, and instead focusing on his thus-far violated right to be recognized as a quickly disposed member of Mimi's male harem, Eminem thinks it's cool to talk about murdering Carey. (Yeah, it's a metaphor, in that Em supposedly has a large enough reserve of incriminatingly intimate phone calls and pictures of Carey that he feels confident spitting the line "enough dirt on you to murder you." So is that really a threat, or just an over the top way of saying he'd like to hurt her credibility? Given Shady's past history of declaiming a desire to get his assault and battery on with respect to his own mother, I'm going with the former.) The video's here if want to see it, and is obviously NSFW, with lots of offensive language about women, as well as a depressingly anti-sensualist attitude about sex that might make you want to become a monk for a few days:

For reference point's sake, here's the Mimi clip that supposedly inspired Eminem:

Now--the cold, cynical economic rationalization for this generally tired and immature back and forth centers around the fact that both platinum-selling work-horses have albums out this year, during an era in which record labels are desperate for numbers. Eminem took the top of the charts when Relapse debuted back in May. But its first week sales of 600,000 utterly paled in comparison to the million plus in opening business he notched with previous records. Is there a "threaten to murder someone" button over at Universal Music Group--the owner of Interscope, which in turn distributes Dr. Dre's Aftermath label--that gets pushed whenever Slim Shady fails to move a million units in the first week? There's an odor of stale beef here that could lead one to think this is being done with a wink and nod between the two performers. (After all, Eminem proved he wasn't above a little stagecraft back at the MTV Movie Awards, as his encounter with Bruno's ass was planned well ahead of time.)

But even if the Mariah-Eminem feud isn't staged, what's strange is how witless the end product is. Diss tracks are supposed to bring some funny. Yes, they also need to devastate an opponent, but most rappers understand this is better achieved with an undermining wit as opposed to a violent spasm in the gutter. Take, for example, Inspectah Deck's recent swipe at Joe Budden--who had apparently committed the sin of comparing himself favorably to a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. Again, NSFW:

Around the one minute mark, in the midst of a hard-bangin' verse, Deck dares the listener to "name me three Joe Budden songs," after which we hear the Jeopardy! theme. In the background, a hip-hop head attempts to do Deck's bidding, but can only come up with "Pump It Up" as a Budden track. "Aw, this is for a hundred thousand dollars? I'm blowin' it!" the faux contestant cries in desperation as he realizes he doesn't know or like Budden's music enough about to be able to answer the question. "Still waitin'," Deck thunders as the track comes back strong. The point--that Budden isn't successful enough to back up his boasting--is effective because it makes you laugh, even if you've never heard Budden's music.

I'll say this for Eminem's diss track, though. Dr. Dre's beat is more interesting than the track Cary used for "Obsessed."

This harassmanent by Mathers has been going on far too long, he's a thirty-six year old with a daughter who is watching her father verbally abuse women. One day somebody will use, abuse and violate his beloved daughter and then he will truly understand the hurt ,pain and humiliation. More importantly what brings me here is to address to situation regarding both him and Mariah and Nick Cannon, for eight years now the industry has turned a blind eye to what is happening. The media up until now have never defended her, especially during the early 2000's when Mariah was the girl that the press loved to hate. The music industry is Male dominated (Execs, video directors etc..)  which could be another reason why  Mariah hasn't been given full backing. Radio journalists are 48% female and 52% male, while radio interviewees are 15% female and 85% male,The media is Jewish owned and they continue to allow this maniac to continue without showing some courtesy...Why ? Because it lines their pockets much like the flagging music industry (which is on it's last legs) which would profiteer on Killing there family members if it mean't they would get there almighty mighty dollar. They (Music industry) have this Godfather-like approach, "Nothing personal,it's just business" meaning there artists can use freedom of expression in order to be as cruel, repulsive and vile as they like but get away with it as it is what they say it is "Freedom of speech". Mather's being Caucasian makes it even worse as Caucasian-Americans  (79% of US population) and mindless, uneducated teenagers in the US continue to support him even though his career is on life support.

This vendetta has been going on for far too long and I'm glad some people are finally recognizing and seeing the truth that he is a liar and is "Obsessed".They may have met about eight years ago to record a song (which never materialized) and spoke briefly, but Marshall was delusional to believe that they were mean't to be. His latest song in retaliation to "Obsessed" is disgusting, and I hope no radio station can stand by and support that at all.In my eyes Marshall Mathers is Hip-Hop's Hitler, he say's something in an interview or on record and the majority of his peers (Mostly African-American rap artists) believe his crap.I feel very bad for Mariah's husband at this time also,he seems to be in the middle of it all ,and to be branded some of the things which he called Nick is extremeley disrespecful. Hip-Hop as a culture is alive as it was born on the streets in the 70's in New York (Griffitying, freestyling,DJ'ing,Scratching, mixing, dancing, street entreprenuerilism,etc..) but Rap/Hip-Hop music is dead as Disco ,due to the fact that corporations raped it and sold it to the mainstream.Seeing as he can't rap forever and the genre is at an all-time low, he is just using the name of an International icon and the biggest selling female artist of all-time Mariah Carey-Cannon , to make himself sound relevant and to get attention from the media/blogs. Much like Mr. T..."I pity the fool"

Mariah's 12th Studio album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" released September ,15.

Featuring the Sizzling summer smash "Obsessed". Production from Industry Heavyweights Timbaland,The-Dream,and Tricky Stewart.

Finally a sensible look into this disgusting subject.  Eminem disrespects a woman on the radio in 2001 and decides its appropriate to conduct an 8 year Vendetta?  How in the world is this possible in the twntyfirst century.  He gets to brand a woman and a peer with his warped scarlett letter.  There is something really wrong when an artist hates on and degrades a fellow artist because the industry allows him to get away with it. The media has also been complicit because until now, no one asked why he dissed her, the put her on trial for his sick bragging and accusations.  Well this creep is an obsessed clown.  He has turned into a Stan himself.  He is an angry fan.  This crap did not start with obsessed.  This year alone he released Bagpipes dissing her and her husband.  She had a right to defend herself.  Sadly he and his spawn fans resort to threats, she better keep her mouth shut.  Why, so he can keep his fragile manhood and ego in tact.  Hilarious he crapped on himself in order to make her stink.  Well he and his daughter will be left to wippe that crap up.

Eminem should grow up and let his fantasy obsession go.  He's like the wizard of oz he gets his power from the illusion.  You are right Universal allows this harassment of a woman and peer because its just money in their pockets.  As Stevie Wonder said when Eminem dissed Michael Jackson "Great artists dont attack other artists"  Eminem is not great and he attacks and extorts other artists so he can feel strong.  He is obsessed and he does have a napoleon complex, or rather an inferiority complex

to the mattthedamon comment, record sales mean nothing as far as skills, shall i list some of the best sellers in hip hop history (vanilla ice, hammer, will smith, to name a few). relapse was crap, i like em but that cd was once again crap. its a very bad look for em beefin with a female and a r&b artist at that. in his own words he came too quick, one time in 6 months, what does that tell you? she was wrong for denying him but let me find out that its that serious. its not like he is me, a regular dude that smashed carey and now she is fronting, then he would have much to gain from it but he is marshall mathers, multimillionaire/one of the best lyricist out and he is stressing mariah enough to put out 2 (maybe more) diss songs. not a good look
