He is very close friends with the author, Tom Clancy. In fact, the basis of the character "Jack Ryan" is really Bob Gates. Of the stories written by Mr. Clancy, they were loosly based on actual incidents. For example, there really was a defection of the capain of a Soviet submarine, but unlike the book, the Soviets did scuttle the sub with the men on board to prevent the defection.

Of the individuals that I know who personally know Mr. Gates, they say that he is a very revered individual, and he doesn't boast about his past successes. He serves to do what is best for the interests of our country.

I thought Obama wanted change from ALL of the Bush "failed" policies. Is he saying Bush's choice of Gates was actually a good one?

We could certainly use someone who knows what they're doing in foreign policy. We are getting a clearer picture of Obama each day, especially in the foreign policy arena. It points to arrogance, weakness, and dishonesty:

Obama met with Iraq's Maliki in July 2008 and began or tried to negotiate with him BEFORE he was president.

In July 2008, at the same time the Bush administration was negotiating a still elusive agreement to keep the U.S. military in Iraq, OBAMA TRIED TO CONVINCE IRAQI LEADERS IN PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS THAT THE CURRENT PRESIDENT, GEORGE W. BUSH, SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO ENACT THE DEAL WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL.

A few weeks before the Nov. 4 election Obama threw conservative reporters off of his plane.

In October 2008 VP candidate Joe Biden predicted an international crisis would be staged in 2009 to test Obama after he became president, and predicted that people in the U.S. would not like the way Obama handles it. FIRST TIME IN KNOWN HISTORY THAT A VP CANDIDATE HAS MADE SUCH A PREDICTION ABOUT HIS PRESIDENTIAL RUNNING MATE.

On Nov. 8, 2008, President-elect Barack Obama's private conversation with Poland's president created an international disagreement, with President Lech Kaczynski saying Obama promised to continue a missile-defense system and the transition office saying the Democrat made no such commitment.

As stated below, Gates is very well-respected and revered. It's not like he served under Bush for any meaningful amount of time or had anything to do with all the damage Rummy and others did. He's been working hard to steer us back in the right direction and if Obama is smart, which he is, he will give serious consideration to Gates.

There are probably a lot like Gates but in such a synical political climate, we miss seeing those stories. Thanks for this one.

He pulls no punches, speaks his mind, and is a decisive decision maker. He has a handle on our military's shortcomings, its mistakes, and he is settled in at this position. Obama MUST pick the most qaulified people, regardless of party or personal favor. Do you recall FEMA Dir. Brown? WHY was he appointed to such an important post? He was a DISASTER. Rumsfeld is another man, blinded by his neo-con views, totally missed the point of 9/11. It was islamic extremists who pulled that off--NOT Saddam Hussein. How many lives did his stupid decisions cost? After 9/11, Rummy wanted to bomb IRAQ...coz there were more targets...UNREAL. Powell, and Chuck Hagel should be hired for thier expertise in dealing with National Security issues. I hope it happens, these are good men. We need to crush the T-ban/AQ, thats #1 on the war front. Iraq will degenerate into civil war soon, and I would take up the Kurds offer of basing US troops, airpower there. MALIKI is Iran's "boy", thats why he wants us out so bad. The hell with him.
