While the SecNav is a civilian job, it is my opinion that the person in the position should have served. This isn't about sexual orientation but about experience. Of course, why should that matter now?

To SC, Bill - Ummm you guys are really freaking retarded with a capitial R! Take a look at the list of past sec. of the navy and you will see that MOST if NOT ALL have no military background. What experience do they have?? Most of them were CEOs, Congressmen, Govs, etc. etc. But most had no military service in the navy.

I strongly oppose this. Obama has been doing everything right in terms of talking and acting like a centrist., but to do this calls in question whether he is really a centrist. Gay is not normal, and it should not be part of the military in any way shape or form.

I have seen far to many of those who "follow the good book" beat their wifes, molest children and commit moral crimes. People of all backgrounds live in this country that is why we have separation of church and state, it is a principle our country was founded on. It was founded on religious freedom, which means that our country has freedom of religion and freedom FROM religion. Both sides of seperation of church and state are necessary! Freedom of religion means all religions there for religion CAN NOT have any say in government or public policy. I am concerned because he has not served in the military and is being considered for Secretary of the Navy. I am afraid you have it wrong. That is why when they set up the tax exempt status of churches there was a clause put in preventing churches from advocating a candidate and if they do they lose their status, this was put in, in 1954 by Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson, though unfortunately it isn’t enforced as strongly as it should be. The tax exemption was set up to keep government out of churches and because of what is necessary to keep it churches out of government. Also the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were forged by Deists, which is not the same as Christians. Look up the word Deist and Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, etc. Several of the ideas for what was put into the constitution are actually based on the philosophical work of a man named John Locke, whose work also inspired the French Revolution.

Separation of church and state is NOT in the Constitution, Blondie. It was a phrase only in a letter that Thomas Jefferson used while talking to a church group. Jefferson was not an author of the Constitution, he was in France at the time the C. was discussed and written. It would be a mistake to put a gay man over military personnel. Gays only account for 3 per cent of our population and should not be in a leadership role in the defense of our country where morale has to remain high when you are working together in unity - there has to be likemindedness, not division and controversy. Their lives amd ours are often at stake.

First and foremost, there are several candidates for this job. No one has it yet. And yes, many past people who have had the offioce have had no military experience. Let me point out that there are several countries (Israel included) where openly gay people serve in the military. This is also true in several European nations. If I remember correctly, the Mossad training is highly respected around the world. These countries have strong religious beliefs, but a person's religious beliefs have nothing to do with serving their country in the military or in a position of authority in the government. A person's sexual orientaion or preference is also not a factor in military or government service.. It has absolutely no bearing on their mental or physical abilities whatsoever. If the person is physically and mentally able to meet the demands of life, then they are. I believe in God, but I also believe that each individual is capable of handling things. Look at world military history, unless you are extremely uneducated, and you will see that this is true.

What military experience do you think he needs to be a top level administrator? As a retired E-6 from the Navy (That would be PM1 for some of you--equivilent to a Staff Sergent for the rest), I can tell you that I have no problems with this guy who has lots of connections, lots of experience in top level administration and nods from Admirals. I don't give a *** if he's gay. I knew so many gay guys while I was serving, it was obvious really. For those that have gay issues, you need to look inward and not out.

Personally, as a Navy Veteran, I do not believe any gays should be in the military. In the Navy, men and women have seperate berthing (sleeping) quarters, they do not actively sleep in the opposite sex quarters period; however, I had to share the same quarters as lesbians that were not discreet in their sexual orientation. I have had to shower with them, dress around them, etc. I did not like it then, and I do not like it now. I honestly do not appreciate being looked up and down by man or women. People did not tolerate that kind of thing when I was in; however, GOD forbid anybody be politically incorrect now. So now to the Gay Man for Navy Secretary. It is sending the wrong message. He will not get my respect, not even his position.

And being openly gay means that the masses of straights could somehow become thus influenced, and soon discover that there are other forms of sex that can be reveled in, away from the norm.

The issue is about a openly homosexual man being considered for the position of Secretary of the Navy; bashing about comments are really vacuous. Personally I enjoy believing that a man who is good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a square deal afterwards; I believe that if someone is going to be given control over a military branch, that the chosen person should have experince in the military. I do not condone homosexuality but I have several friends/relatives who are openly gay and I support their right to live their life as they see fit. However, the military is not now nor was it ever intended to be a social experiment. Like it or not, the role of the military is to KILL people before they KILL us. I served eight years in the Army, probably with a few gay soldiers that weren't "open" about it. Not sure of that but odds are, I probably did. However, an openly gay soldier would have been a possible distraction for the men in my platoon. Distractions are not what's needed in a combat situation. Social experiments are fine in other venues but the military is not such a venue. Give soldiers weapons and bullets and feed them well. Do not give them a reason to question the soldier beside them. And, before it's even mentioned, I realize minorities were once frowned upon in the military and have now proven that some rules/ideas are stupid. But, sexual orientation adds a whole new dimension to the discussion, one that doesn't need to be added at this time.

It's amazing to me how utterly stupid, racist, and sexist a bunch of Americans can be. We live in a free country, and with that free country comes the right to choose. I can't say I support gay marriage; I simply don't. Marriage is between a man and a woman as I've been brought up to believe and have learned through my many years of church. However, because someone is gay, does that make them any less qualified for a job? Because Obama is black does that make him less of a person, more likely to fail in office? I don't think anyone could f*ck up anymore than Bush has done during his years in office. I'll just assume that those of you so opposed to homosexuals are also opposed to things such as human embryonic stem cells as well. Sorry to tell you that this technology with potentially save your life as well.

It's funny, I do research in human oncology...you know what I do? I grow cancer cells, I implant them into mice and figure out ways to solve the problem. Is it wrong of me to sacrifice a mouses life while trying to solve an ageless problem and possibly prevent you arrogant from dying of cancer one day? Open your eyes to the world, or go back and try and create an Aryan nation. We all know how well that worked out....

This person doesn't seem like he should hold this position since he hasn't been in the military. It seems like he should have prior military service. i agree with what cougar69 has posted.

I have a son who is currently in the military and he would agree that the gay situation would be a distraction. Our military is there to protect us, not fulfill any quotas or kowtow to the gay groups such as Human Right Campaign. Someone who is an American first, not gay first should be selected.

This is a ridiculous discussion. Why is this news? Why does the popular press make such a big deal about minority issues? Am I the only one that thinks results matter? Pick the best person for the job. If no one told me that person was female or black or gay I may never know the difference. Likewise, I support the Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy. I think it should be our new motto. Maybe put it on a coin. I don't care if you're Catholic or Muslim or Baptist or Jewish or Gay or Black or Latino. Personal CHOICES are precisely that. Personal. Choices. Gay doesn't govern whether love is valid or invalid nor the sharing of lives in a committed relationship "'til death do them part." This country was founded on FREEDOM of CHOICE among other things. You don't approve of being gay? GREAT don't be gay. You don't approve of gay marriage? GREAT! Don't marry someone of your own gender. You don't approve of zebras declaring themselves bi-racial? GREAT! Don't advocate for their rights. THOSE are YOUR choices.... but you do NOT bear the right to make those choices for others, no matter your role in government.

A governmental expert should have exactly that ... expertise in his or her field. Lack of expertise is what should influence this decision. Not the man's CHOICE, guaranteed under our Constitution (Pursuit of Happiness mean anything to you, bigotted, hypocritical, closed-minded thinkers out there?! -- that's rather like the once Whig party's idea that FREEDOM was to be "only moderately shared among SOME of the people." Instead, he'll begin by undermining morals, family values, tradition, and all around decency. Who cares about an individuals sexuality? What happens when doors are closed, and in the privacy of individual homes is the business of the individuals involved. If people have various skills, and proficiencies, that is the importance in determining worth, and value for any given position. Sexuality and sexual deviance should be private, and discreet. It is not a factor otherwise, and should not have the spotlight that it has.

If a gay recruit outperforms a straight recruit physically and academically, wouldnt it be in the nations best intrest to atleast, atleast, allow them to put their life on the line for their country? Who are we to say that they cant serve and die for their country simply because they dont like the oppisite sex. We just elected a Black president. Did that hit anyone yet? His presidency will bring about changes to which this country has never seen before and those who wish to stand in the way of progress need to get out of The "United" States of America. Maybe it's time for a few changes, because we all know that the military isn't perfect because if it takes 8 years to find one man maybe we need new leadership in the military..... Im a Republican. Intresting huh? I dont always agree with Democratic ideas because to be honest Barack is in favor of soldier withdrawls. Barack wants to pull soldiers out of Iraq after we (America) put them into a civil war. I am a female army vet, who during my service, served with gay service men and women. What someone does behind closed doors, should NOT be ANYONE'S business!! Just a thought,

I'd prefer not to have an openly gay person as a military leader, or any leader for that matter. I know my thoughts and opinions may differ from yours, but I belive in democracy and want voice my opinion as well. When I got married I didn't instantly lose attraction for all other women. You don't marry who you don't date, in most cases. I, being a man, dated women that I could fall in love with and one day marry, and have a family with. I didn't date women that I thought wouldn't work out in my dreams of what my married family life would be like. When I got married my attraction for women didn't disappear, I just don't act on those attractions anymore because of the commitments that I have made with my wife. Likewise ppl that are attracted to the same sex don't need to act on their drives, especially if they have hops of ever having a normal life. I'm not saying that being attracted to the same sex is not normal. If you are attracted to the same sex I believe that you are very perfectly normal, I just think that a married family life between a man and a women is normal and that choosing not to act on same sex attractions is normal, in my opinion. We all have choices to make and we will ultimately reap the results of our choices.

As for the constitution and the 1962 ruling of "seperation of church and state" in my opinion the constitution was misinterpreted by the supreme court, but that is the job of the Supreme Court, and who am I to argue with them. I would like it to be looked into again by another supreme court, because I feel that the current stance is too harsh and that it is not what was intended by our founding forefathers. I believe that they didn't want the government to help promote or push one religion over another, but that we would all be protected with freedom to worship as we desire.

I wish our leaders would look to the past to make better decisions for our future. I believe our laws are becoming too pervasive. I think that the longer a government stays in power, the more laws are created, interpreted and reinterpreted, until the laws and the administration of them become so overwelmingly and pervasively consuming to our thoughts, concerns, and energies as a whole that the very protection and freedoms the laws were written to provide on an individual basis are lost in the frustrations and controls created by them.

In my opinion, it has come to the point that people can get arrested too easily, and go to jail for too long for doing too little; when, at the very same time, people get away with murder, rape or other extremely life altering sinister crimes with very little repercussions in comparison.

Openly gay guy as a military leader? It's shows a direction. I 'm against it, but I feel that there are many things our leaders need to be concerned with as a country, and Obama, although I did not vote for him, may be just what we need.

Alternate, renewable energy sources - let's become a world leader in this field, it'll pay off in the long run. Besides, have you had the chance to take our daily domestic oil production and subtract it from our proven reserves lately?

Baby boomers are going to retire and take their money out of the stock market faster than younger generations will be able to put money in. I'm concerned that it could cause a network failure dominoe effect as companies stocks become worthless and more people are laid off the less people will be investing, getting insurance, and paying taxes. This can cause a ripple effect that will work it's way into all economic circles and then as some areas collapse such as the building consctruction industry in america the burdens will spill over into other areas such as the banking and insurance industry, creating a dominoe effect bringing down other economies. I have friends that are opting for child birth at home because they can't afford insurance.

Summary, I have a great deal of concerns, I have a big family and I want so much, an enjoyable future for them, and I feel that it is possible if our leaders are proactive, work with insight and work together in unity bipartisanly, (if that is a word).

Maybe Obama will take us in the right direction. Let us Hope, Pray, Work Hard, give constructive opinions and letters to leaders and what ever else we choose as our part to do to make a better future for our children. The world is in our hands now, what are you going to do with it.

I think it is a mistake for Obama to appoint this man Secretary of the Navy. It makes no sense to appoint a man without any military experience within the Navy Department first of all, and it makes no sense whatsoever that the Navy and other armed forces adhere to a "don't ask don't tell" policy and then Obama turns around and selects a gay man to head the whole Navy department. Obama never having served in the military himself, doesn't understand what this would bring to the morale of all Naval personnel. He needs to work at rebuilding the respect among the armed forces that they've lost with Bush in charge. This is not the way to do that.

This appointment is a critical area. Clear heads with no distractions or weakness is important of the person in this duty. Gayness or homosexuality is not welcome and is not respected in many areas of today's society, and thats the way it is. Most people known to me would never harm a soul, and would never dream of it, however the emotions expressed towards the gay person appointed this job by citizens willing to express aggressive opposition to the gender affiliations of the gay appointee may put the nation at risk.

The nations safety and happiness is the most important concern, especially above a minority of unknown gender affiliations people elect to adopt, be conditioned, or forced to be classically identified with.

To be quite frank the vast differences in what we call gender may classify many genders, not just gay, lesbian, heterosexual, bisexual. The classification is possible to include a combination of issues not just gender, leaving it to wonder if the confused gender affiliated people are just milking the attention and enjoying the ride.

This guy has no military experience and you want him to be SECNAV. Give me a break. The entire world is beginning to be a powder keg with the good old United States as the primary target. Why not a retired Admiral or anybody else with the experience to know the capabilities of the Navy when Obama needs advice when he is has to make some very difficult decisions.

Yea, well you can all feel good by trying to be politicially correct and say abnormal sexual behaviour don't matter. Where do you draw the line? Would you want him as your Boy Scout leader? What if he was porking his poodle, would that also be acceptable behaviour.

I spent over 20 years in the Navy and I can tell you that it does matter. Try being on an aircraft carrier with a crew of 5500 and having to sleep in berthing quarters with 50-60 other men, not to mention community showers and bathrooms on a daily basis. Under those conditions there is very little support for gays.

Don't ask, don't tell was a flawed policy when it was adopted and still is. Under the new policy an investigation can only be initiated if there is evidence of misconduct. The number of gays dismissed from the armed forces is just as high now as it was before the policy.

How do you know a hypocrite from a person with genuine intentions for the good of others? The hypocrites, do not support gay marriage yet talk about how they support an appointment of a gay person. The hypocrites talk about a black man who can’t f*ck up more then Bush as if they are in support of a gay appointment.. Hypocrites also write about how they support their (gay) rights to live their life as they see fit and in the same letter write “The military is not now nor was it ever intended to be a social experiment”. I would like to say that if it wasn't for the gays in the military today we would not have a military.

When Mr Clinton ok'd the don't ask don't tell the rate of discharges went up. Now if you go back and check you will find that about 50% of them were straight boys wanting out.

Now when I was in the Military, we had alot of gay men in. we even had supervisors trying to keep them in because it was said they were the best workers they had. So tell me why is it so hard to have a GAY man as Sec. of the Navy?

I didn't vote for Obama but if he is going to keep his word let him have a wide range of input from all walks of life. He can't do any worst than the last BUSH.

As far bringing the Bible into get over yourself. The relegions sector has more problems than anyone. Yes church and state should not mix and that's the way this country was set up. Once again GET OVER YOURSELF PEOPLE.

Any one can be gay. That's not the point... is it? Orientation isn't like a switch, either on or off. Anyone can be attracted to anyone. Just as anyone can have sex outside of marriage. All "sinfulness" is natural, which is to say that "natural" does not automatically equate with God's highest for people. Those who don't care what God has to say from a biblical viewpoint won't really value a moral discernment one way or the other on the matter... so why just talk about what's biblical or not biblical? Doing right is not what makes God happy. The pharisees did right all day long, but Jesus said they missed the heart of God altogether. So legalism is not the answer.

If the gospel and God's truth is really abundant life, then it makes no sense to talk about sin and throw stones. Meeting God changes people. Realizing one has a propensity toward sinfulness (without meeting God) does nothing but spur legalism.

I think some of you are missing the point.

If this article were about the current SECNAV, I would comment on how badly his performance has been. The military chain of command has lost its luster and has been flattened to resemble a business enterprise. This was made to happen by a man with NO military experience when he took the job. Trust me, our military, particularly the Navy, is suffering for it. It matters not whether White is gay or straight...I couldn't care less; but it does matter that he doesn't have the experience necessary to restrengthen our military into the formidable fighting force it was during the Cold War. It is hard to project power when we have to convene a steering committee on how to best do that every time it needs to be done. Chain of Command was lost by one with no experience and Obama considers more of the same his "Change." White's gayness makes him a political pawn to ward off any gay activist groups when his abolishment of the current policy takes longer than expected. If that doesn't jump out at you in the article, then read it again. Political pawns have no place in our national defense. I'm just glad I retired when I did.

I'm so tired of hearing about whether or not someone is born gay or not. Deviant behavior is a decision that everyone makes. It is so silly to say that gay tendencies are normal. The human bodies are made the way they are intended to be used. Alcohol is not intended for the human body. Alcoholics are deviants. Alcoholism is deviant behavior. You decide to become an Alcoholic, you decide to engage in deviant behavior. The anus is made for fecal matter to exit. It is not a sexual organ. A penis is not meant to enter the human body there. Deviant behavior, a choice. Therefore you decide to become a deviant and accept or place a penis in this area. It all has to do with the mental state of the individual. This is a simple example for simple minds. However, you should not be in charge of an important part of the government if you don't know what you penis or anus is for. You are not right mentally, so you shouldn't be in charge of guns. I am not against gays, I am not against alcoholics, I accept them. However I do not wish to rely on anyone who is deviant, mentally off, etc. Please let it go. Be gay if you want but don't force your deviant lifestyle on me. Keep it to yourself. Fellow Americans, listen! I served 25 years in the United States Army. I spent a life time defending my country and its constitution. Every American young and old enjoys the freedoms given to you by our founding fathers and held together by the men and women who willingly sacrifice themselves, their families, and often their lives to protect those freedoms you so readily enjoy. We live in the greatest country in the world where you are allowed to live and express yourself, enjoy freedoms that most of the world do not comprehend. If the president, Commander and Chief, choses to appoint an openly gay man to the Cabinet so be it. There are gays serving in the military. It is a fact of life. Live with it! We have finally broken the race barrier, know it is time to take the next step. Let all men and women, no matter what walk of life enjoy those freedomes we all hold close. I spent a lifetime ensuring those freedoms are protected. Now lets give them to everyone as they so richly deserve. I salute all Americans; now more than ever is the time to reach for all of your dreams including the right to serve in the military, gay or straight. It does not matter as all Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airman understand it is what lies in the heart of those who serve. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but at the end of the day we should support our president as he alone as the undaunting task of leading all Americans to live the "dream". Now put your petty differences aside, respect each other's opinion and the next time you see a member of the military or veteran, shake their hand, give them a hug, buy them a drink, and thank them for their sacrifice. when we have leaders who have not served and do not know the people who serve, these are the decisions we get. when our leaders have not shared a shelter in the field, or hot racked on a ship, we get this.

the gay community would like to paint the military as populated by homophobes. it is not. even though the majority of those who serve lean toward the conservative side, they do not care what people do in their own homes. the home of the service member is shared. sleeping quarters, showers, eating, recreation....all shared. don't ask, don't tell, works because it keep those behaviors that the majority would find objectionable practiced in their home, out of sight.

to pacify a small number of people, this president would be willing to sacrifice the military to a social experiment. if he wants to go spend some time on a ship or in the field first, then make the decision, ok. after clinton checked out the living conditions, he changed his mind. maybe "the one" should follow his lead?

Anti-Stupid: Go back and read Colin Powell's eloquent defense of Don't Ask, Don't Tell sometime. Sexual orientation is not skin color...it is not a benign characteristic. It is behavior, pure and simple, whether gene based or by choice, it makes no difference. Military service is a privilege, not a right and the current system works well and should remain as is. The military was the first part of society to defeat racism and has largely eliminated drug use. They can do it because if you violate regulations prohibiting this and other behaviors that negatively effect combat readiness, you are thrown out, pure and simple. Openly gay behavior will tear at the fabric of cohesion in a military unit that is absolutely vital for combat effectiveness. It is useless to tilt at the windmill and expect soldiers and sailors to feel any different than most of society. The military is not a social experiment. Its not just another job. When your job is to defend the country and that job may mean your death and the death of your closest comrades, the last thing you need is to be distracted by the sexual orientation of the man next to you. This is nuts - and President Elect Obama knows it...and its why he has already backed off on this one. The man will do great things,,,and wasting time on this issue would be a tragedy and just dumb.

The US military is under great stress. Every day they are asked to do the impossible with 1/2 the force (thanks Bill Clinton) but are 3 times as busy as we were before Desert Storm. Bill Clinton did exactly one good thing for the military in 8 years - he came up with Don't Ask, Don't Tell. He was smart enough to listen to Colin Powell and the 99.9% of those with an informed decision.

Yours is not an informed decision. You can't even begin to understand the difference between race and sexuality...and the higher (way) calling of what it means to defend this country when 99% of the people can't or won't risk it.

I commanded several lesbians in my unit - they were very effective...because their orientation was no flaunted. Don't Ask Don't Tell allowed them to serve but put the brakes on openly gay behavior that would have been an issue. They knew it and it worked. Sarahzu and Red Angyl your arguments reinforce my point.

Bill White is a good man, but he certainly is not the most qualified to be Navy Secretary. There are at least 5 more qualfied, more experienced choices. Garcia would be outstanding.

The question really is whether or not Obama should choose a Gay Man for the Navy Secretary in a time when the country is already divided nearly 50/50 over many issues including the question of homosexuals incluidng homosexual marriage as with Prop 8 in California. This issue is so hotly divisive that when Prop 8 won, the homosexual community initiated hate filled reprisals against those who had contributed to the cause to get it passed. The whole issue of homosexuality and whether or not it is a moral issue or an issue of political correctness is so hot that Obama would do well to avoid stirring this pot.

Obama has touted himself as a uniter. His initial round of appintments affirmed that he intends to govern more as a centrist than his campaign rhetorice would have supported. If he is to unite a country divided behind his presidency, he must stay away from this hot potato issue. If he tries to cram a homosexual at this level down the throat of a very divided country (see the comments to this post), he will stir a pot of anger that he needs to keep tempered in order to govern effectively. His most recent two--the Governor of Iowa and Colorado--two extreme anti-oil drilling/development people is enough to set the teeth of the nation ajar as over 70% of the country--even many who voted for him--are for drilling/mining the big deposit of shale in Colorado/Utah.

Obama is pushing his luck. He may have a majority in Congress, but 48% of the country voted adamantly against him. Polls say those voting against Obama did so more fervently than those who opposed McCain largely because of the press built hatred of Bush.

Senator Obama, flirt with appoint a homosexual man to salve the wounds of the homosexuals, but appoint someone the whole country can respect! Appointing a homosexual man to this important post will hurt your position at home and abroad. You said you wante respect from the Muslim world. Well, they are more opposed to homosexuals than the Bible thumping South that is, in spite of your constant disdain, still part of the country you will soon govern.

I have two gay friends that joined the Marines - even though they knew they'd be risking themselves. All to protect our country. Luckily they reported having found that most other soldiers treated them 100% normally when knowing they are gay. So, for all the "oh no" comments from long-ago-retired veterans, the current soldiers have a more realistic and open view of the world.

At least I can be hopeful for the future. Since the younger generation (<30) is much more accepting of gays and as the older haters and biggots pass on, we'll have a real change from within. Just like the African American stuggle, we'll look back on this time with disgust that prior generations could be so cruel and ignorant. (And its true, the Bible clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination - and a few sentences later, it says that shellfish (shrimp), pork, and mixing meat and cheese are abominations as well).

It is a major theme in history if the governed military leaders dispise the decisions of the President (or leader) beware. Who actually controls those nuclear submarines and their payload? Military officers most of whom are very traditional.

One of my concerns is founded on the belief that I have that our country is great because of blessings provided as the results from the choices made of so many people that have lived before us. That the majority of them have loved, relied on and looked to God for direction and support.

My concern is that the choices we make effect the lives of others. If we remove God from our schools, government buildings, coins, etc, will he remove his spirit and blessings from us? Can believers be punished by the desires of a nonbelieving majority?

Some of these coments I am reading are unbelievable! Homosexuality is a naturaly occuring event in nature. Being gay is not deviant, it is natural. Over 400 animal species have been documented to have some degree of homosexuality. I am sick and tired of people being ingorant about homosexuality! to all the people criticizing this...

first off. it's a civilian post. boo-hoo. he can appoint whoever he wants as long as their credentials are deemed high enough.

secondly: to those who state that homosexuality is a behaviour, well yes it is, but it's also been determined to be one that you're born with. you don't get to choose if you're gay or not. since when does being homosexual mean you can't keep your johnson in your pants?

third: you should DIRECTLY compare this with people of color serving in uniform. to all those "the unit can't deal with it" people. the unit sure as hell didn't want to fight with black people, but the unit got over it and thank god they did. once homosexuals are allowed to fight, there'll be adjustment, sure. but you know what? the unit WILL get over it and when it does it'll mean our country is at a whole new level of acceptance of people and beliefs.

fourth: obama won the election people. sure he's a uniter, but you know what? he has his beliefs and while yes it's his job to unite on some fronts he is also going to divide on others. do not expect him to crumble to conservative social issues. i'm a democrat and i'm a democrat because of social issues far more than i am for fiscal issues (while i do identify with both). we've spent the last 8 years bowing down to one of THE most religiously conservative administrations ever. the country wanted change and the election told us they wanted change with a landslide. don't tell me you can't compare a black man sleeping with a white woman in the 40's or 50's to two gay men being together in the 90's. homosexuals have got to fight for their rights just like african americans did in the civil rights movement, the government helped african americans back then...you'd better expect the obama administration to help now, and having an openly gay man in a secretarial post is exactly the right move.

yes actually- sexuality can compromise the integrity of a unit. Think about it in this light- if there are 10 men and 5 women in a unit and everyone comes under fire- what do you think will happen? Say a woman is shot- the men will move over and shift their fire to protect the rest of the women, when in fact their orders are to flank the enemy without regard. Mission first always! So the men move over to save the women and the entire unti is destoryed. Meanwhile nuclear weapons are launched. Hey...at least they saved the women right? Did they accomplish the mission? Negative!!! War is a cold profession. There is no room for an undisciplined unit with distractions.

I would think we need to think about experience in the military, maybe true young men enter with none but they need someone qualified to guide them not someone that wants them. I would be willing to bet Obama let the gays make him feel bad for having his Christian pastor to speak for him that does not believe in gay rights. Anything for politics. Well not to say the Bush administration didn't make a few mistakes but we were free of 911 attacks and Bush pretty much knew where he stood on things even if we weren't always behind him. Serving in the military is not a right, it is a privilege! The military is very discriminatory. If you don't have at least a high school education you will be rejected. If you do not fall within certain height and weight standards you will be rejected. If you do not score high enough on an aptitude test you will be rejected. If you have any known medical conditions that would keep you from serving in any place in the world you will be rejected. If you can not pass a physical readiness test you will be rejected. If you can not pass a back ground check you will be rejected. If you lie, cheat, steal, can't control your mouth, or can't get along with others you will be rejected. If you do not comply with strict grooming standards you will be rejected. If your personal life discredits the branch of service you serve in you will be rejected. Are you starting to get the "picture"? The military is not a nine to five job...go to work and them go home. Servicemen work often in very close quarters and often for very long periods of time. Living quarters are tight often rendering privacy non-existent. Men give up personal rights for the sake of good unit order and morale. There is no room for individualism in a well functioning unit. In combat units men needing blood transfusions will receive it from unit members. Introducing openly gay men into the military will comprimise all of the above. The military is not about individualism, diversity, race or sexual orientation. It is about unit cohesion! If President Obama institutes open homosexuality into the United States Armed Forces, I predict a reintroduction of the draft by the middle of his fisrt term because the Americans who volunteer to serve will stay home.

I have read those works, and I don't see how they apply to the question of gays in the military. I am also an Officer in the Army and I did not graduate from Budweiser U. I am curious as to where you feel you gained authority on this subject. As a combat veteran I know what it is like in tough situations, and I guarantee that when the chips are down I could care less what someone's sexual orientation is. Please stop posting ignorant comments because you make the U.S. military look unprofessional. By the way, having served in the military doesn't guarantee that you will make better decisions than a civilian. Our current president served in the military, and his decision making certainly has not been excellent.

I don't really care about race, sex, religion, or even sexual orientation. That said I am against putting someone in a position because of one of those factors as well. I would prefer someone with a military background. If we truly want change why not an asian female teenager? We have never had one of them as secratary of the Navy. Perhaps we could even find one who likes to draw pictures of ships. I have grown tired of the silliness. To use the NFL as an example people are always playing the race card...it doesnt make sense to me. If someone found a dolphin that could coach a team to win I would back that dolphin 100%. But to simply hire a dolphin because it hasn't been done before is stupidity. I am for putting the best qualified individuals into the positions. Some will read this and say that my stance is racist, sexist, homophobic etc., let me put your minds at ease I am a caucasion male born in the US, Any good news organization can tell you I am responsible for every bad thing to happen during the history of the earth. Perhaps this selection is for the best and we can start filling every top position based on what hasn't held that position before, then eventually hopefully we can get to a point where it is no longer special and we can start putting people in positions based on qualifications.

I think this is a bit bogus. I think that the secretary of the Navy, even though it is a civilian job, should be held by a retired Naval Officer. Same with the other branches. To take someone with no military experience and put them in that post is idiotic. As far as the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy that Clinton put in, it should never had been implemented and needs to go. Either let gay people in the military or don't. It is a decision for congress to make, not to be pushed off on those in the military to deal with, like that policy did. I spent a bit over 20 years in the Army, I am not gay, and I have no problem with gay people being able to serve their country. There was a time when i think it was a good idea to keep them out, but only for their own safety. Being homosexual is much more accepted today, and I say let them in.

nathan, i have gay family members and gay friends. i work with gay people. that's not what we are talking about. we are talking about living conditions that do not lend themselves to privacy. we are talking about an organization that depends on unity. it's about, literally, who we sleep with. when i was in the military, i would not have been comfortable sleeping butt to butt with a guy. it wouldn't matter that the guy had no interest in me. i would be no less uncomfortable sleeping butt to butt with a lesbian. i would not have wanted to shower with the guys. i would not want to shower with a lesbian.

figure out how to make living conditions "normal" for the military. then talk about letting openly gay people serve. and don't tell me that other countries do it. no other country does what we do under the same conditions. no other country, except maybe the Chinese, train the way we do. they do not have a navy that does extended deployments, or an army that spends 12 to 18 months at a time in the field.

in truth, we all say and even believe, that we accept what people do in their own bedroom as their own business. it is. we do not think about the actual mechanics of what they do because if we are honest, we find it repulsive. we won't admit it, but it's the truth. how many of you straight men and woman would sleep in a bed with one or two gays, think about what they do, and be comfortable in your circumstance???

oh.....my thoughts, in order:

1) Here we go again (referring to the flame war erupting)

2) Does anyone REALLY have to look further than these posts to see that our problem starts within our own communities and families; if we are so freakin' quick to display hatred towards each other - our fellow civilian countrymen - then what the hell is anyone fighting for period/

3) To my gay friends here: It does no good for us to try to explain in these posts here, already fueled by the originating writer's opinions of their own posts, about our lives as gay men, women, etc., or to even point out about not being a choice of lifestyle, etc.....their minds are already made up.

4) To my straight friends here: You may not know ME, but I can guarantee you that you DO know a gay or lesbian person, even though they may not be out, trust me, you do. It is only the survivalist nature of ourselves as human and therefore having all rights equal that we would strive to make our presence and existence more well known and accepted. We don't mean to offend you, we only want to live our lives.

5) To all: It is only through coming together and acting as a cohesive "unit" that WE (meaning ALL) will succeed in the positive and forward movement of America as a nation. Black, white, gay, straight, all in between - we're really running out of chances, don't you think? Having hatred and disregard for each other has obviously not worked - let's try something else, shall we? How about upholding the real ideals of our country which guarantee equality and brotherhood instead of just talking about them and pretending we honor that, but then pull out the hoods and guns at night....

6) No one is going to really going to continue to put the words of an oft-translated 2000 year old book into sorting out the problems of a mutli-cultured people. Quoting scripture.....I don't understand how it relates to the topic - which is really an article about a respected man who happens to be gay for Navy Secretary... - are you really THAT blinded by this book? Their equipment was the best...their Sailors were terribly lacking in skills. They conduct underway replenishment fore to aft to this day. Point is, my son is studying to be a Nuclear Physicist in the Navy...I'm certain it is above your head.

Since I am digressing from the real point of NO QUALIFICATION to be SECNAV, I will address all the "I was born gay" advocates. If you believe straights can reproduce and gays cannot, then you must also believe that being born gay is some Darwinistic control of the world's population. Hoorah! Gay people will prevent global collapse due to overcrowding. Don't argue against homosexuality as a "condition" in medical texts while trying to convince us you are born with it.

In fact, it seems like any decision Obama makes is an invite for platforming and positioning on issues that truely have nothing to do with the decision being made. WOW! I think the ONLY issue is if this guy is qualified or not. I DO think that consideration should be give to whether or not the men and women in the Navy will treat this person with respect and if the choice for the Navy Secretary is good for "the troops". The enlisted have an incredibly tough job, and it is imperative that the chosen person be aptly qualified and respected.

To Navy Veteran: first off, I would like to extend my thanks to you for your service to our country. However, I'm forced to disagree with you about the discriminatory nature of the services. Recently a high school student here in Denver wanted to find out how much it would take before an Army recruiter would reject him. He hit the recruiter with just about every negative thing possible - no high school diploma, history of drug use, you name it - and the recruiter STILL told him he could "work things out". Nowadays the military is so understaffed that they are desperate to get new warm bodies enlisted, and will overlook things that would have NEVER passed muster in the past. Unfortunate but true.

To all the alleged Christians who are screaming about how the Bible says homosexuality is wrong- I would suggest you read the current Newsweek article about gay marriage and how the Bible does NOT say anything against it. I'm sure you can find the article easily on this website.

And finally, to republican2000: you're such an idiot that it's not worth taking the time to respond to you. I hope you're stocked up on the asbestos underwear, because with the kind of hate you're spewing, you may be very surprised where you end up after you die. Jesus would be the first to condemn that kind of intolerance and hatred.

Once again the government is showing that the rules for civilians and Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are diffrent. If a Sailor would be removed from the Navy for admitting he is gay, then how can the leader of that branch of the service allowed to be appointed if he is openly gay?

I have just read more of the comments and one stood out that I have to comment on. Someone said being gay is not a choice but being straight is? I don't care who or what anyone sleeps with but for myself I am attracted to certain attributes. It isn't as if I woke up one day and wrote up a list of things I should find attractive. Though when I was young there was constant bombardment about blondes,(blondes have more fun, Farrah Fawcett posters everywhere) I on the other hand found myself attracted to short petite brunettes, it is simply what I prefer and nothing else. You want to feel special because you were born a certain way, fine you are special, just as special as the other 6 billion+ inhabitants of the earth. If you find your sexual orientation is what defines you as a person I feel a bit sorry for you and hope you can get out there and discover theres a huge world out there. not that this has anything to do with the subject, but some of you seem to think you are constitutional scholars...

there is no separating of church and state in the constitution. this idea comes from an erroneous reading of part of a letter from Jefferson to the Danbury church. it was taken out of context and used as foundation for the ruling.

if the supremes had actually done their homework, they would have found many, many, references from the founding fathers that admonished us to make the decisions of government with the will of god in mind. they would have had more reasons to keep religion in government than to separate it.

i'm not particularly religious person, but this separation thing makes me angry. most people who spout off about it, don't have any idea what they are talking about. it comes from a court ruling. not from the constitution.

the 1st amendment only prohibits congress from certain actions. it has nothing to do with states, or any other part of government, prayer in schools, exhibits in public, etc.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Forget all the gay reasons etc. The issue here is if a gay person should be in charge of the Navy. The answer is simple - it doesn't matter.

For all of you who don't know, the only real reason for the no-gays in military policy had to do with the fact that the military was very close and lacked privacy. Example, when I was in the Marines we all lived in and open barracks with one large shower. At that time I would have been extremelly agianst gays in the military. But now that is not the case. If males and females can be integrated then so can gay and non-gay. While in combat (which I have benn in) you still have the issue of integrated living, you do not have that issue in most peace time situations. The military now lives in barracks that are basically college dorms with two to four people in a room.

From a military point of view. the issues dealing with gays are gone. There is no reason to use the military to advance an anti-gay, anti-female or anit-any race agenda. It is over.

As a former Marine Corp Sinper I would be proud to serve with anyone who (1) knew what they were doing and were qualified for their position and (2) could pull the triger when needed. I have seen many "straight" men crie like babies and many females and gays handle their own.

Everyone loves to point out After-the-fact all of his short comings, when in reality, if anyone of there 20/20 hindsight were actually put to the test may not fare nearly as well. At another time I could spend pages describing why I feel many of the problems we experience and blame on him now were inherited as well and will likewise be passed on to Pres. Obama. I think he has shown depths of strength, character, resolve, and dedication that should be marveled by most and can be rivaled by very few living today. (my opinion)

Second, Why not gay?

I never thought of myself as being ignorant, but I don't have a grasp on understanding gay. People posting should state their "degree of gay" or whatever :) so we can understand if it's a first hand wisdom you are sharing with us or if it's just some dogma you've learned from some school you've attended. I graduated from a university as well, and I don't need more of the same. I just thought gay ppl had attractions and desires to be with and fall in love with ppl of the same sex. I never really thought more into it than that. Wouldn't it be tough to live in a world that looks down on ppl and judges them for feeling attracted to the same sex.

If you are anti Gay, be glad it's not you.

I still feel like I don't want to give my consent or approval to a leader that openly says he is gay and continues on with it as if it is ok. I believe having gay feelings of attraction are normal. There are too many people claiming to be gay to disclaim that in my opinion, Besides, it only makes sense to me that varying degrees of different types of attraction are going to be felt in different ways by different people. Saying that, I still believe having a gay lover would be wrong and that it would show a weakness to act on that desire. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Some ppl have snorted cocaine to get high because "That was the point." But we can turn our lives around and change for the better. Different people with different opinions and desires make the world a better and more beautiful place to me. How beautiful would a rose be if there were no other kinds of flowers. ok, it'd still be beautiful, but not as exciting. Likewise our differences really enhance the beauty of our human race. Still I believe that there are desires that we can work to overcome, and things that if we acted on could hurt people we love now, as well as people we may meet and love in the future. Maybe their is a single woman out there that believes in Plato's split-apart theory and that there is only one certain person that fits her ideal man, and that man happens to be gay right now, only dating men he is attracted to. They know each other, but never get serious because he is openly gay, and, Ok that may be stretching it, so maybe I'm wrong, and ignorant. I don't know, but I'd rather strive for righteousness(I'm far from it but striving none the less), and I feel like heterosexual relationships is what God inteded and that gay attractions are something people can overcome, even if they don't want to.

Gays in the military are bad for morale. Most normal men would have a problem going to the showers, with someone that is known to be gay. Why must the majority be subjected to these circumstances, to appease a few? Our military men need to be concerned with their duties, and not if some gay guy is checking them out. Call me what you want, being gay is just not normal, and the more this behavior is accepted, the more demands and accomodations they want. I would hope that Obama shows a little sense, and selects someone else. The military is different than the civillian population, and should continue to be.

I don't want to get off track by saying some of the things written before me, God doesn't speak that way, and I don't think we as a nation should either. I'm not here to condemn anyone, nor am I here to say that what had been said previously in this post is "of God". If you read the word of God, it speaks pretty plainly that homosexuality is not of Him, but at the same time, the word of God also says not to judge man, that God will judge every man and woman according to his own doing. I think we get ourselves tied up in the rhetoric of our culture and begin to bash one side or the other, depending on our own beliefs, but are we carrying out the true passion of Christ... to love one another? God is going to honor those who live by His word, but we do not get "extra credit" for bashing those who may live a lifestyle that doesn't agree with ours. It means that we must all live a life that is an honor to God, in our own right, not the fact that we "bashed" more beliefs than the next person... I pray that as we enter the next Presidential term, as Barack Obama takes the helm of this great country, that God will bless him and his decisions, and that we, as a nation, can honor God through our actions, not through our slander of our fellow man. I don't know Mr. White, nor am I equipped to say he is right or wrong in his beliefs or lifestyle, but I know that God is watching over him just like He is watching over me. I pray that God continues watching over our nation and continues to bless us, but I also pray that He brings us all to the understanding that to be Christ-like is to love everyone, regardless of their lifestyle, race, political position, or status. Let's let God be the final decision maker in our life's destiny, it's up to us to make the best of today... I do not by any means want to shower with a gay man, with the potential of him "checking" me out but why not just asign rooms to them? I the heat of battle (if you have been there) I can assure you it becomes irrelevant (I have been there). You don't care about all the bull crap like sexual prefenerce, race, sex, etc - you care about who has your back and as I mentioned before, I have seen MANY striaght men cry like babies and I've had to protect them even though they were "military". If this choice is made, it should have nothing to do with the politics of the man being homosexual. He'd better be incredibly qualified completely apart from his sexuality. The whole of Christian history, from the Scriptures to the early church fathers to doctrinal statements for nearly 2,000 years have unambiguously stated homosexuality is sin. Newsweek putting the issue on its cover and bleeding out a poorly argued case (for anyone who has ever really read the Bible, that is) won't change that. If you want to reject Christianity, fine. In fact, it was his "business" experience that leaders in 2001 deemed a qualifying factor in leading a military organization. The "gays in the military" issue aside, what are this guy's qualifications again? Part of the damned problem with society today is that we focus so much on factors that are irrelevant to a person's capability to do a certain job. WHO CARES if the man is gay? Can he successfully run the Navy? Is he qualified? WHO CARES of Barack Obama is black... does the man himself have what it takes to be President? Regardless of your views on these questions, it is undisputable that the color of a person's skin, or their sexual preference, or any of those extraneous factors does not render someone capable or incapable of doing a certain job.

First off, that "Bible Box" mentioned by a previous blogger is something that this nation was founded upon and that the Founders of this Nation believed in. And those principles are what made this Nation what it is today. If the founding fathers saw fit to follow those principles why are we changing our foundation. Pull out the foundation and the rest crumbles much like the Roman Empire did.

Second, as a Navy man I would (my opinion) like to see a Navy or Marine Corps Veteran as Secretary of the Navy. The creditionals for that post should be revisited and have a requirement of some sort of naval experience whether Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard.

My 22 years of military service to this country have shown me that gay men and women have served proudly, with honor with distinction, in the past. I believe they will continue to serve the same way in the future More to the point; We can't submit everything we do in this country to biblical tests. If we did we would still have slavery and stone people to death. We are trying to protect our culture from those cultures that require blind obedience to religious dogma. Get over it. A gay guy may be Secretary of The Navy. If he does a good job, good for us. If he does a poor job, put him on the road.

It is obvious that many of the individuals that have commented on the idea of appointing a gay white male who did not serve in the Navy find this to be a discomforting situation and that they use lack of experience as a criteria by which to reject a person. However, persons with out experience in the military have served in various positions within the department of defense, including as Secretary of Defense. One appoints an administrator based on his ability to manage an organization; such skills can be learned many places and can be transferred from one position to another. An intelligent person with the requisite administrative abilities and the determination to manage well and to learn the knowledge necessary to understand the organization he is leading can be very successful. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with one's ability to function as a leader.

Most of us have learned little about the history of the world or know that homosexual behavior occurs in most of the animal kingdom, and that there is considerable evidence that one's sexual orientation is determined before birth due to genetics and occurrences within the womb and the level of stress experienced by the motherr during particular periods of the pregnancy. If a child is predisposed to homosexuality at birth and feels more comfortable with a person of the same sex when he or she is sexually stimulated, this person may well feel that his homosexual impulses are natural for him or her.

Unfortunately, some religious leaders with very little knowledge of human growth and development have taught that homosexual behavior is abnormal and that it should be rejected. It is sad to say, but true, that many poorly educated and ignorant persons have become ministers and that they have attemped to impose their rather primitive beliefs on others and the society at large.

Obama should realize that the country is not ready to have a homosexual man as Navy Secretary from the vote against homoswexual marriage in California in spite of the fact that far more money was put into defeating Prop 8 than into passing it.

If Obama chooses to be a uniter, he should stay away from this divisive issue. He won the election but now he must govern the country and that takes a sensitivity to the overall country--especially since he has a very thin mandate with 48% of the nation voting against him. There was an allusion of preponderance because of the electoral college votes, but his lead in many states was razer thin. That didn't show up in the electoral vote, but he actually had only 2% more of the popular vote than Gore. He must govern carefully or divisions which are already there might be his undoing.

If he picks a homosexual man it might start riots akin to a minor civil war. If the military leaders--largely a little older and more conservative--decide not to follow the leadership of this man they can't respect, then there could be hell to pay.

Obama best leave this can of worms alone.

I have no trouble with gay men or women. My daughter is in show business, and we have seen many pass through her life and, therefore, ours. But, the comment by davehutch is correct. I predict that if Mr. Obama, who I also have no real problem with, gives in to the left fringe on this, we might as well close the Navy. I predict less and less re-enlistment and almost zero recruiting, except of course for gays. Unfortunately, my basic impression is that most gays are idealogically opposed for the NEED for the armed forces, so this will just mean the eventual demise of the Navy unless we re-instate the draft. Facts are facts, realism is realism. Imposing an ideaology outside the mainstream is NOT the job of the president. Frankly, I had thought that Mr. Obama was smarter than this.

i forgot to add this in my last post. my purpose of posting a reply to your comment was to highlight the hypocrisy from people who preach tolerance/respect towards homosexuals but in the same breath slam anyone who is of faith be it Christian, Jew or Muslim..and hold the belief that marriage is an God-given institution between a man and a woman.

Having said that, pertaining to this article itself.....by no way am i suggesting that we stop this guy from getting this post because he is gay. I have no opinion on this gentleman holding this post just as long as he does not use it as a platform or vehicle to promote his sexual orientation. I'm of the belief that if the person is qualified, if he/she has a proven track record, if he/she has earned their stripes and shows promise to excel in the role they are been nominated for, give it to them and support them and set- them up for success. do not chop them off at their knees because of their sexual preference. I'm not saying I'm okay with homosexuality nor do I think its normal. The point is that, it has nothing to do with the job itself. As a Christian, I'd say if people excluded me from anything based on the fact that I am a sinner or have flaws, then I'd be annihilated to the caves. I'd not belong anywhere. Thank God for grace He offers through Christ. If it weren't for that, we'd all be lost. Billy Graham once said, "..... homosexuality is sin but so is lying, so is promiscuity, so is greed. All sins are the same, there's no one sin more severe than the other....." So using that premise, are we going to stop a highly accomplished 5 star general with the respect and proven track record from becoming a Defense Secretary because he once made a mistake had a moral slip and cheated on his wife? I've served in the military w/all forms of the human race and not once did I ever question a persons, religion, sexual orientation, race or anything other that was not relevant to accomplishing a mission. What does a person's sexuality have to do with their ability to perform a job? NOTHING. I partially blame the media for stereotyping gays in a feminine, materialistic, ant-religion, anti-military way when this is simply not the case. I also blame Newsweek and all the other media outlets for making a deal out of the guys sexuality in the first place. But the vast majority of the blame has to go to close-minded people.

I am 18, gay and know four gay men who have served in the military, three of whom still are (two in Army, one in Navy, one in Marines.) Not surprisingly, all of these men kept it secret, part out of necessity and part out of it was an easy thing for them to do. So they aren't some prancing, stereotypical homo gay men. And I can tell you the majority of gay men aren't the way you see them often in the media, you just never notice because you assume they're straight by their demeanor and the thought never crosses your mind that they are gay.

Your personal opinion of GLBT should have nothing to do with someone's professional career. If it does, it's discrimination whether you will admit to it or not. The majority of heterosexuals know NOTHING of what it is like to be gay, and I'm not asking them to know or even care to find out (although if you aren't looking to be ignorant and are looking to better understand someone else, that might be the best way to do it.

A true 'man' will stand up for what is right, even if it is the unpopular thing to do. That is what shows strength. Not "lets bash the gays because it's easy to do where I am from and will make me sound manly to call another guy a f****t." And what is right is not to judge someone because of what you think is unnatural or 'nasty', or by what the Bible says (isn't that God's job to do anyways?) but by their own individual character and circumstances, if you choose to judge at all.

This man sounds qualified for a civilian job at the top of the Navy, and clearly is if he has the support of military Generals and members of Congress. I'm sure there are gay Generals that would be qualified too, but you'll never hear that they're gay because they're in the service and wouldn't be able to let that be known, for the sake of their job and livelihood. Kind of sad if you ask me.

My husband is in the Navy, and has been for the last 10 years. There already is a gay contingent in the Navy. There always was. Now, they don't even hide it. The straight guys don't care. If they did, the gay guys would be out. It has already become commonplace to see gay people in the Navy, and there is no decrease in enlistment. You would be surprised at how many lesbians are on the ships. Lately, enlistment has been up because of the economy. Our generation, the generation of young people that are in their late teens and early twenties, the ones that are enlisting in our armed forces, have already grow up with an understanding that people are not to be discriminated against FOR ANY REASON. As a department of the US government, the military should follow suit. The fact that 10% of the American population, and thus 10% of the military, is gay does not IN ANY WAY reduce the value of their service for our country or reduce the quality of their efforts. Allowing people to be themselves and not make sexual orientation an issue will only work to enhance the solidarity of our military personnel. It is so disappointing to see so many closed minded people posting to this article. Face it - your buddies and brothers and sisters from the Christian mid-West who are serving our country are doing so side-by-side with gays and lesbians, and they are not suffering for it, just like white men in the military did not suffer when blacks, hispanics, and women joined their ranks. Okay. I did not vote for Obama, I "would have" voted for Ron Paul. I voted for McCain "holding my nose". I don't like Big Government. I'm a fischal conservative but a socially I'm liberal. I am also a Christian. I'm just sharing this about myself to better understand where I am coming from w/my comment. Personally, I could care less if this man is gay. My Christian belief is for ME. As an American citizen we all have constitutional rights. We are not a Theocracy...if you want that move to Iran. Gays should have every single right entitiled to them in a supposedly free society. If they want to marry it is their business too. If you say, "you're a Christian how can you say that" all I can say if you feel it is against God fine, but remember, if gays marry isn't it between THEM and God? If something does not apply to you then get over it. As long as the man is qualified I could care less. I have native ancestors slaughtered by the US Gov't so I do not like it when Gov't interferes with individual liberties. Of course my native ancestors were labeled as "hostiles" because they fought the US Calvary and White Settlers for 20 yrs rather then just give up their land; but I want to say "we've come a long way baby". Christians need to focus on the utter apostacy withing the church and "cleaning your own house". I do want leaders in government with honesty and integrity but I think that is asking too much from politicians. (Is it even possible?)

I'm realy amazed with the ignorance, that I sometimes read in these discussions boards. But , there is also a majority of intelligent Americans who understand that someones career has nothing to do with whom they sleep with or what they're sexual orientation is. I applaud President-elect Obama for his decisions on appointing his team. I was in the Army for 12 years, served as a Spec-4 in Petroleum supply, during my career in the military I met alot of gay men and women, whom due to the "don't ask, don't tell" law they hid it from everyone else. My captain in my basic training course who had been there for about 30 years is a gay man, a man I looked up to who showed me how to keep going until I graduated from Basic training, and no one ever even imagined he was gay. I too am gay and served my country with pride and was discharged honorably, to what I am proud to say. America it's time to open your eyes and realize that we are here to stay and we are growing in size and in numbers (more than 10% of the population), and there's no one in this earth who can or will stop us from growing and becoming part of political positions which were supposed only to appointed to heterosexual old men. I know there is people out there that are going to quote their holy book, but you know what who are we to judge, discriminate or even question what the Supreme Spirit has created and it's reasons for doing so. Only in death will we know the truth to all those questions, in the meantime, stop discriminating, stop judging, stop be intolerable, only that way will we find peace and unity in this great country of ours.

President's have done things that are just as against the bible and the public turned a blind eye. Numerous presidents have been known for keeping girls around who weren't their wives, the public not caring about what happened in the politicians private lives was pretty common before Nixon. As long as he can do the job, and not having served doesn't necessarily matter considering other qualifications are just as important.

I don't know why it had to be mentioned that he was gay in the first place. I consider myself a strong christian and truly try to live by the bible, and that being the case, a sin is a sin. Liars, cheaters, haters and a whole list is not pleasing to God, but HE is the one who will judge us all in the end. However we must love and respect everyone and try to do what's right. I've worked with gays for years and their professionalism and education was outstanding. If he's honest and can get he job done, let's move on.

Our national defense is not a place for a social experiment. This really needs to be studied more closely to investigate what effects it will have on troop morale, recruiting the best recruits etc. I know their is alot of prejudice out their, and I know we have overcome other prejudice within our military ranks. I served in the Army with a gay Captain. He was very professional and did his job well. But I guess I cant help think about when I was in the military and showering with other troops, It would make me very uncomfortable to be in this situation with someone gay. If thats not an issue why dont we just have all the troops shower together (men, women, and gays). The only sensible thing I have heard is the dont ask, dont tell.

I went back and reread what I wrote and I can see where your confusion comes in. My point is that we would not make a female room with a straight male because it would make her uncomfortable, not the straight male. I know gays aren't switched on all the time, c'mon be serious. But is it right to make that female room with the male, of course not. Being attracted to someone won't distract them from their job, but when you think the person next to you is constantly checking you out, THAT is distracting.

The excuse for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was that honesty about gays and lesbians in the military was a "social experiment" that would hurt morale.

Gays and lesbians are Americans, folks...get over your bigotry, or for those of you attempting to use God as an excuse... those so-called "religious beliefs" that are nothing more bigotry wrapped in the pages of the Bible.

After the mistake of asking Rick Warren to be part of his inauguration, Obama needs to do something to show those gays and lesbians (and those of us who support gay/lesbian rights) that their support wasn't a mistake.

If this gentleman is qualified to be Naval Secretary, let him. Having a civilian manager as a Naval Secretary, regarding of sexual preference, might be a welcome change to insure proper management of the Navy...and a perspective different than the same old insular perspective.

Gays deserve the same rights as everyone else and eventually will get them. Society will accept them even in the military it's out natural social evoulution. What they neeed to relize is the in your face attitude only hinders their cause and will prolong this proccess. Rather then appeal their case for inclusion in society it seems they would rather spend their resources to hate those that try to exclude. Like I said I believe in gay rights and I believe the majority of Americans feel the same, but I also feel as though the majority of gays view all Heterosexuals as evil biggots. This same type of posture is what has taken blacks so long to earn their place in society and that took generations, gays are in for a long uphill battle at this rate.

No! It would just send a signal that you don't like Ms Donnelly. Unless I am mistaken, you have never served a day in the uniform of your country, yet you presume to know what is best for it.

I had to kick out 2 of my best airmen when they were caught kissing in their dorm room by the First Sgt. If it'd been my 2 worst troop and one had been male and the other female it wouldnt have even rated a reprimand. The AF lost 2 promising members because of this misguided clearly religious-based prohibition. As long as people come to work and do their jobs I dont care if they are straight, gay, bisexual or even martian. What a gay troop does off duty is no more my business than what straight members do.

You are one of those people who think they are experts on something just because they read about it. Baby, join the military and serve a tour on the front lines (opps, I forgot you don't like women being in the military either) and see how you feel then. Maybe at that point, if your opinions havn't changed, we will grant your arguments a little credibility.

I dearly hope you have a daughter and some day she comes to tell you that she is a lesbian and that she has decided to join the Army. That'd probably give you a coronary! :)

Bisexual and homosexual behavior has been comprehensively and indisputibly documented in virtually all mammels. Moreover, it has been confirmed that it is NOT due to a shortage of the opposite gender. Humans, I note, lest we forget, are mammals, and some of us are hardwired to apprecaite the opposite gender, others both, and yet others the same gender. To challenge biology's logic is to spend time mopping up the tide with a sponge.

Military forces in Great Britain have accepted openly identified gays and lesbians in their troops for some time. I have yet to hear of mass orgies, cultural decline, or collapse of morale of those troops.

The truth of it is, the presence of gay men and lesbian women is the elephant in the middle of the living room at virtually every military installation. Certainly, that was the case when I served as an Infantry officer in Vietnam, during a far less culturally englightened era. Some of my best roops were men who, off-duty, preferred the company of men. I could have cared less who they slept with on their own time, frankly. It was their performance under fire, which ranged from substanative to brilliant, that I gave a damn about.

By creating this mythic concept of the presence of gays without discussing it, we continue to bathe the topic in shame and secrecy, and thus, loose talented men and women, either via discharge or an unwillingness to serve. Are we so rich a country that we can afford such an scandalously narrow moralistic treatment of this subject? There are reasons why top military brass are now coming out to abandon this shibbolith, this myth, that if we pretend it is not there, it will somehow, for the far right religious zealouts, no longer exist. That brass knows better, have undoubtedly, like me, served with talented, loyal and dedicated men and women who - happened - to be hardwired differently.

I served my country, risked my life in an unpopulaer war that, subsequent to my discharge, I demonstrated against. I was glad for the functional talent of of the troops that served with me, some of whom did not come back. Of those that did, the last thing I could give a damn about is who they choose to sleep with off-hours.

Primates & mammals may have occasionally intercourse with same gender partners,but they never have sex exclusively with them.

Bisexuality is very rare in all animals & strict homosexuality is virtually non existent ...

On the other hand,if a homo is ok for the job,his appointment is a political issue.

But no more nonsense on the "normality " of homosexuality.

This would be good as the "Don't ask, don't tell" is a bad policy. If someone who is gay causes a problem in her/his unit than deal with them. Likewise, if a perosn causes problems because someone is gay in their unit, then deal with the problem causer. Deal with it like adults.

To me the whole homsexual thing is on how they have intercourse. I personally don't think a person should have their idenity idetermned by how they have sex. There are Hetorsexuals who have sex in the same way in their bedrooms, and not identifed by this act. I don't think it should be any ones business, how they have sex. It is personal I also think we should not deny and treat people differently because of how they have sex. I believe some people's hommoes that make them act more like males or females, there it is a biological, some become so,by how they were reared, and others by traumatic situations. I believe for some ii is a choice and some it is not. I think how we have racted to this has made it more then a problem then what it is. Whether the person is a gay or other wise should not make any difference as long as he does his or her job.

I was supported of the right of people who call themselves homsexual to have the right to marry or be in civil unions, and have the same rights as others. However,I don't like the way they are trying to presure and manipulate Obama to change his mind about who he wants to do the invocation at the inaugramation. It makes him look weak if he does. This is not a way to get his support. There are more people against this, then for it. It is lke winning a point, but losing the war. This outrage over a selection of a person to pray the invocaton. is not the big enough to lose support over bigger issues. This turns many off, that you will need to support you. As an African American minister, I resented the position you put Obama in. We in the black church have been taught by the mainline white demonations that this is a sin. So back off,. so he can deal with this with some diplomacy or you will lose support from some of us, about what is teally important. There needs to be a re-eduation with both. This is just another example of judging people by the color of their skin, gender, or their sexual activity. it is all superficial.

I'm so glad I was airforce. seriously though, not a good place or time to make a social statement. you've got to keep the morale up and this aint the way to do it. I think we just got a look at the inexperiace of obama not to realize the folly of this idea. as far as don't ask don't tell. According to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Romer v Evans, 1996, the government must treat all persons in the same manner. There can be no laws favoring or disfavoring an individual or class of individuals inasmuch as this would constitute a violation of the 14th Amendment which requires equal treatment. There are many additional Supreme Court ruling to this effect.

To be quite frank the vast differences in what we call gender may classify many genders, not just gay, lesbian, heterosexual, bisexual. The classification is possible to include a combination of issues not just gender, leaving it to wonder if the confused gender affiliators are just milking the attention and enjoying the ride.
