Powell sinned, in my opinion, by not telling Bush to piss up a rope, concerning the Iraq war. Hope he repudiates the Bush administration's and McCain's hang up on war (post, post, post, Vietnam psychosis) and endorses Obama.

The idea of Blacks being racist since they are overwhelmingly voting for Obama would be true, if Obama was a republican. Blacks have traditionally voted for the democrat candidates irrespective of the candidate's color. This year, the percentage of voters amongst blacks voting for the Democratic candidate will be higher because those black voters who never bothered to vote will probably bring themselves to vote. A rather more important question to ask is: "will the republican party ever field a black candidate for president?" If it does, and if the blacks do not vote for him, or vote for him in smaller numbers, we know that they are not racist and are just Dem leaning.

I and many others will vote for Sen. Obama, not because of his multi-racial background (that's right -- he is as much Caucasian as he is African American), but because we believe in his policies, and many of us will vote for him solely because we are Democrats. When Republicans vote in lockstep with their party -- even though an overwhelming majority of Republicans are White -- it doesn't that make all Republicans racists anymore than African Americans (the vast majority of whom are Democrats) voting for Obama makes them racists.

In other news, the Los Angeles Times just joined the list of newspapers, including the St.Louis Dispatch, in endorsing Mr.Obama. Fox news has this to say about Mr.Obama's increasing number of endorsements from professional establishments:

This nation which has prided itself so much in eliminating race from consideration of one's status still just can't resist mentioning it. Let's stop and think why we didn't rave so much about voting for a white president as we elected the most recent one who will go down in history as the most incompetent in the office. After him, we now have the choice between a candidate who is all white and one who is half white. There is now only one fourth of a black man in the race. So, why don't we at least dial down the interest in the race of the candidate to at least one fourth, and better, none at all. We could have done much better for the past eight years with Nelson Mandela, for instance, than with the idiot prince who was apparently all white, if black is the question.

We have outgrown this crap. Get sensible and vote for the quality of the person and stop this madness. Otherwise, we need to grade candidates as White superior, White inferior, Black superior, Black inferior, Brown Superior, Brown Inferior, and so forth. Got it?

How true your comments are and I thank you for them. It is utterly disheartening to continually read posts of people who find something sinister in the level of support Obama has for Obama. For decades, blacks and most minorities have related more to the Dems than the Repubs. A look at the Repub Convention and the McC/Palin rallies will give you a glimpse into the make-up of the Repubs and who their primary focus of support is. It is likely true that some black people are voting for Obama primarily because of his race, but even he were white, he would had still gotten atleast 85-90% of the black vote because most blacks are Dem and have voted for the Dem nominee for Pres. It's ignorant and inaccurate to say otherwise.

Sarah Palin's husband was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) for 7 years. The AIP wants Alaska to secede from the United States. Sarah Palin herself may have been a member. She attended their 1994 convention and just this year told them in a videotaped address to "keep up the good work." So she is a hypocrite to be singing the anthem, handing out flags and country first banners. This woman pals with people who want to break up this country.

The founder of the AIP said "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions" and "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag. I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." If Palin is such a patriot, why has she been involved with these people?

As a disabled veteran, I'm frankly surprised that Powell will endorse a man who has spoken against our troops, and has a heck of a lot to learn about foreign policy . I can assure you that there are young men and women holding off their enlistment/reenlistment until after the election. Because obama doesn't appear to understand the meaning of patriotism (based on almost every action and word), I am VERY concerned about the future of our military (and maybe the civil servants, as well) and the security of our nation. What I'm also concerned about are the lies / omissions regarding his affiliation with Bill Ayers (who probably thinks Tim McVey - the OKC Bomber- is a martyr.) obama wasn't 8 on Sep 11, 2001, and he still worked closely with the man (and other radicals). If McCain would have had the same relationship with Ayers, he would NEVER have made it to this point because the Dems would have forced him out long ago...it's never equal with the liberal left. A great example is the way they (the lefties) have voiced their HATRED for Gov Palin. Had similar names and/or treatment been thrown at barak or Biden - the Secret Service would have been on them like white on rice....God Bless Our Troops ! God Bless America!

At this point, it seems more likely than at any other point in this election, with Obama ahead in the polls and with all the debates complete. It's possible that Powell has said to himself, "I've seen enough." Of course, he might be seen as a "traitor" by other (I hesitate to say "fellow") Republicans, but if I were him I would feel betrayed by the Bush administration's deceipt and duplicity as well.

On another note, for those saying that Black people are voting for Obama because he's Black--keep in mind, Alan Keyes ran for president as well, never mind the fact that he ran against Obama for the senate as a replacement on the (R) ticket. By that logic, the votes should have been split down the middle but Obama won by a landslide. Carol Mosley Braun didn't receive overwhelming Black support during her presidential bid, either. Stop being insulting and give your fellow Americans credit for the capacity to make choices based on policy and like-minded philosophy just like you. To assume otherwise is to betray the racism you deny.

Why Bill Ayers is important to this campaign?

John McCain should make the argument personal and something that the American people can identify and understand. John McCain views Bill Ayers as a founder of the Weathermen and Weather Underground and also founder of the Students for Democratic Society SDS on the campus of the University of Michigan. The University of Michigan had held the first sit-in against the war.

John McCain and the other 600 Vietnam POWs believe Bill Ayers was responsible for prolonging the war and causing them to receive extra beatings by the North Vietnamese for refusing to show their exuberance for the antiwar effort in the United States.

The North Vietnamese fought even harder and refused to negotiate or return our POWs given the organized antiwar protests in the United States. All the North Vietnamese had to do was wait and domestic antiwar protests orchestrated by Bill Ayers would cause the United States to surrender.

John McCain spent five and half years as a POW and personally received extra beatings because of Bill Ayers. Barack Obama views Bill Ayers as a reformed domestic terrorist who did despicable things in the past but should be given a second chance today.

For Barack Obama there was never a need to keep a distance from Bill Ayers. Maybe if Barack Obama could have walked in the shoes of John McCain for just one day and suffered just one of the extra beatings that John McCain endured for five and a half years because of Bill Ayers and his Weathermen antiwar movement then maybe Barack Obama might appreciate a need to keep a distance from Bill Ayers.

Along with the SDS Students for Democratic Society, Weathermen Underground, the Black Panther Party also actively opposed the Vietnam War. Barack Obama received the support of Southside Chicago Congressman and former Black Panther party member Bobby L. Rush during his bid for the Illinois US Senate seat.

The Black Panther Party along with the Weathermen Underground prolonged John McCains captivity and caused him to receive extra beatings. It is ironic, that Bill Ayers led the antiwar protests during the Vietnam era that caused John McCain to receive extra beatings and to experience nearly six years of captivity, and today Barack Obama has been leading antiwar calls against the Iraq war.

Barack Obama can not understand why John McCain is not happy that Barack Obama has not kept a distance from Bill Ayers. If Barack Obama had walked in John McCains or any of the other 600 American POWs shoes just one day, he would have no problem understanding why he should have kept his distance from Bill Ayers.

The word shunning comes to mind. If Barack Obama would have shunned Bill Ayers and members of the Black Panthers Party this would not be an issue in the campaign.

We're winning in Iraq - check out today's news. If you'd seen Letterman last night, you'd know that McCain also wants to go after Bin Laden. There are groups out there who profess to be in support of veterans, but are actually working toward a whole other goal. Unless the ratings/polls are completely balanced (Dem/Rep), then I don't put much faith in their findings, across the board. My concerns also lie with the fact that obama sat in a church that preached entitlement & hate for 20 years, but none of it sank in? obama also financially supported radical groups and individuals - which is FINALLY coming to light. If Powell can overlook what he's professed for years to support this man, who will spiral this country into socialism, then we have all been wrong about him because integrity (and if you've been listening, you've heard the half-truths and omissions from the obama camp) should trump race. Why didn't Powell run for president? I'd think he'd have been my choice, once upon a time....

McCain has known for years we left soldiers in Vietnam and that our government was not willing to pay ransom for them.There are proof he even passed a bill that no one can go back and look at this documents that may prove they were men still in vietnam and were abandoned.

For that the idea of a hero has gone and he certainly does not deserve to be president.

So you say. However, there's really nothing the Repubs can offer me--period. I simply feel your party has been hostile more to me than the Dems have been. Since around '64, many whites have left the Dems. Why? Because blacks and other minorities have come. And why is that? Is it because I think the Dems have provided more opportunites for me to have a fairer shake in this country, and the Repubs haven't? Is it because your party has given me the impression that they have a bunch a nutjobs who'd look at me as if I were gum underneath the heel of their feet? I believe that the Bush Administration manipulated Gen. Colin Powell as they did the rest of us. I had respect for this man before the Iraq War that was re-enforced only after he resigned. I believe the man is honorable and would have endorsed McCain long ago if he did not have the backing of the Neo-Cons. McCain is of the new breed of Neo-Republicans... Like Bush. Not all Republicans are like Bush, McCain or their little mouth piece Sarah Palin. I believe that if he endorses Obama, he does so because this is the best course for the US.

He should also do something to make up for his role in supporting an administration that authorized the torture of prisoners, which no honorable soldier (or human being) could possibly condone. He has shown himself to have the temperament, self-control, sound thinking, and vision to make a great president. I hope Powell endorses him. I fear McCain's irascible nature and his penchant to jump one way and then another...McCain has gone out of his way to pander to all the forces in the Republican Party which have caused this country so much grief...their religious extremism (Palin selection), their inability to take the longer view on financial matters (financial meltdown due to deregulation), and their hypocrisy when talking about Democracy (Guantanamo). I went into the Marine Corps at the age of 18 in 75 and I'm very proud I served my Country. SinceI got out I have worn a POW/MIA Braclet in hopes ofone day being able to take it off. I have read Gen. Colen Powell's book and wa ready to canpaign for him in his bid for U.S.President and I havehadthe upmost respect for him as a Officer & a Gentelman. I would proudly salute him as my Commander in Cheif however if he backs Obama I will loss any and all resecpt for him as a man and a soldier. After reading Obama Nation and seeing what a lier Obama is & the fact that he will not even salute our Flag and paid to have it removed from his jet. I can not even beleive that Powell would even think of backing him. I guess color means more to Powell then Country. I can not understand how he could bring himself to back a man that would not take the time to shake the hands of our soldiers over a man that spent 5 & 1/2 years as a POW while fighting for our country. I guess PRIDE is a thing of the past ? Dear Loriw, Most companies at $1 million in sales do not even come close to a 25% net profit (read $250K taxable net profit) unless you are in the software business. And if you did there are enough ways to strategically reduce the net profit number to avoid a small bump up in tax rate. I was a partner/co-founder in a small business, $4 million in sales and we employed far more than 20 people. Companies making that much money are not goiong to stop growing their business because of a bump up in tax rates. Get real. Obama's campaign which is spending over $35 million a month to run is effectively a much larger business by 35x than you have ever run.

Palin is a loser by any accounting. If you believe the Republican spin on what Palin has acccomplished in her 22 months in office, than you are even dumber than I think. It may be the largest state geographically, but at 600,000 population does not even qualify as a large city in most states. McCain says he is running to serve his country, but believe me, Palin was no pick for the citizens of the U.S., it was a pick to cater to the Republican base and get him elected. God forbid anything happens to him if he gets elected. You believe Plain can stand up to a Putin or whomever else comes knockin?

I'm sorry loriw but you are dead wrong. While you may have experience in the business world (and congrats to you on owning your own business) - to the contrary, it is Sen McCain's economi "plan" (and I'm being generous here to even call it that) that would be not only detrimental to you - but to this entire country. Pls stop to consider that the reason that Gov Palin (and she fails to point this out in speeches) may have been able to reliminate inventory taxes in Alaska - is because Alaska has oil revenues to REPLACE the tax. If you cut or eliminate taxes - something has to replace it as a source of revenue - otherwise something has to be cut from the budget. Otherwise you are deficit spending - which is exactly what Sen McCain is proposing. There is no way on God's green earth that Sen McCain can balance the budget in 4 yrs (as he has promised) implementing the economic policies he has proposed. Noone, probably incuding John McCain, believes that is possible. While it's all well and good for Alaska (to have the oil revenue)- what about the rest of the country? Sarah Palin may be a good governor for Alaska (with a population of roughly 650,000 - there are many mayors in this country with bigger consituencies than Gov Palin has had to govern). She is an ill prepared, uninformed woman with an inability to tell the truth not only about herself - but about most of the issues. She has no business being the VP of the United States.

And second - your post is disengenuous in another respect. I have been reading the posts here for sometime. And all of your posts have been nothing more than viscious slander against Sen Obama. I doubt with an economic advisor like Mr. Buffett (perhaps you have heard of him?) he has done more than his share of research, and more than his share of seeking counsel and advice about this economy. In fact, just about everyone agrees (yes, both conservative and liberal alike) that Sen Obama has some of the best economic advisors around. And by the way, Sen Obama has himself experience in the world of finance just after graduating from Columbia - but I'm sure you will find a way to denigrate that too.

It is so evident from your past and present posts that you despise Sen Obama (apparently for no good reason) that any objectivity a rational person may have had on this subject has passed you by. (Just as an example: you fail to mentiont the tax credits he proposes for start-up/small businesses - just thought I would mention it). After being made the patsy in front of the UN to start the Iraq war Gen. Powell should have no loyalty to the Republican Party. They destroyed Gen. Powells reputation and character. Obama is highly intelligent and has a history of crossing over and working with conservatives. The McCain campaign is trying to scare the American People that Obama will raise Elite $250,000 income voters 3%($7,500) and that is som how bad for the majority of americans. Any Intelligent Bussines Owner making $250,000 should be able to find adequate write offs to manage the tax increase. What a bunch of cry babies. America should start worrying about how America is perceived around the world or we will continue to rot. Gen. Powell is looking at the big picture and doing what is in all of our best intererst. Firstly, I have to consider that Powell has a lot more insight into the way the White House is ran way more than I, or any of the other commentors do. He has a family and generations under him who are going to be affected by this election, why would he endorse someone for their color? I do believe some black people are voting for Obama because of his color, just as some white people are voting for McCain for his color, duh. But the thought is absurd to me that Powell would jeopardize the safety and financial stability of this country because he only likes Obama because he's black. Although it's plausable to say that about any black person endorsing Obama, doesn't mean it's factual. I'm a white woman in Idaho, population 3% black, and I'm voting for Obama.

Obama has broad cross party appeal. Ofcourse, die-hard republicans would rather be burnt alive than support Obama. But, IMO, a lot of moderate Republicans see better sense with Obama while still staying loyal to their own party. But the percentage of Americans who would vote for a candidate based on issues is on the rise. For many people, selection of a candidate is based on a common viewpoint on America's greater good RATHER THAN endorsing of policies being driven by what your candidate adopts. America is changing...and for the better. Obama and Colin Powell both represent a step in that new direction.

He can create a cult of Personality by associating himself with the idea of change. He convinces everyone that things are terrible and a drastic change is needed. He then casts himself as the only person who can deliver this revolutionary transformation that everyone is waiting for. He portrays himself as a benevolent guide; the only one who cares about people and their needs and can pull them out of their alleged misery.

In reality, they have no clue about how to address the problem - have no experience, no track record. But they are convincing because they are self assured.

These revolutionary leaders need foes. They exaggerate the problems. They make everything look gloomy. Obama has chosen President George W. Bush to smear. He can rally people around himself, as long as he can instill in them the dislike of Bush and equate his rival, McCain to him.

For twenty years Obama was part of Jeremiah Wright’s racist church and listened to all the hate which that man spewed against the Jews and the “rich White America.” Obama did not object to any of those hateful comments and even donated $20,000 dollars to his Trinity United Church of Christ. DEMOCRATS are willing to overlook all that and, mesmerized by Obama’s speeches, they embrace a man who up until yesterday supported the racist views of his spiritual mentor. They call Obama’s speech "glorious," and concludes he is honest and moral. How did they come to that hasty conclusion? There is no evidence of that except his "gut feeling." That observation is subjective. We have not seen any evidence of Obama's honesty yet. On the contrary, he has been caught with a litany of lies.

I have always thought that Colin Powell should have been the running mate of Barrack Obamas'.

It would show bipartisanship. I feel that Colin Powell's foreign policy credentials are strong enough that it would insure an Obama/Powell ticket. I'm also sure that Colin Powell has better reasons than Obama being black for sure. Right now it's not about race it's about who will lead this country in a more positive light. McCains' name does not deserve to be in the message but it is, only because I really don't like the negative direction he and Sara Palin have taken it. Ayers does not matter, and Rev. Wright does not matter. That was smoke covering the door to the future.

If you look at many movies that have been made there seem to always be a black president during a time of crisis and things worked out for whatever reason. I think Mr. Obams will do the right things to make this country great again and to make everyone proud to be an American too. We have many dark days the past 8 years and NOW is time for all Americans to step to the plate and

hit a home run and VOTE!

And last, why did McCain lie and tell the American people he could balance the budget in 4 years. What was he drinking? It's no way either could do that unless the stock market flip flopped and our currency was worth more than anyone elses in the world. We all know that won't happen.

But we need to stop borrowing money from our enemies and put into place a new trade policy that forces our trade partners to buy our products. China is killing us with the low quality products

When Democrats took control of Congress in 2007, and oil was $50 a barrel and corn $2 a bushel, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid promised an energy plan. We’re still waiting for it. Today, crude oil is $134 and corn is $6.50. It’s pretty clear who’s to blame: Congress. In fact, House and Senate Democrats have obstructed any progress in America’s fight to regain some semblance of energy independence. Wind energy is not going to power the trucks and cars that move America everyday. Electric cars are on the rise but skeptism about efficiency and performance is a concern. I’m not or claim to be an economist but the simple “supply and demand” theory will drop the oil price drastically. Like it or not America runs on OIL.

And that all problems only happened in the last 2 years. that the 6 years before did not have anything to do with what hapens now is a crazy idea. during the 6 years of GOP control Bush never vetoed a bill pushed by the GOP. But it seems they get such a pass for the work or the lack of work that was equality done during this time. World demand has skyrocketed, and we're in a stranglehold by OPEC. Simple supply and demand doesn't apply when some cartel is holding us captive by constantly reducing supply, and if you are naive enough to think that we can produce the difference that we get from those countries you are dumber than your posts let on. Beyond that, much of the oil we receive comes from Canada, and part of that comes from their tar sands, which extracting the oil from is costly itself. Don't blame the democrats for America's problems, go blame yourself. Change comes from people, and more often than not the people we elect enact very few of the "changes" that they promise. It's people like yourself that have exacerbated the social differences among Americans as you choose to blame those not of your political affiliation for all of the worlds evils. Get a life!

I am not surprised that Powell would endorse Obama. He is a military man first, and never seemed to be a politican. I think that the Bush presidency with its control of congress pushed things to an extreme, and Powell grew against it. The same thing would happen with Obama as president and controlling congress. It would go to the other extreme, and would lead to Powell endorsing the next opposition. It is the yin and yang of things. Hopefully, in the future we will find a leader that unites the two extremes. McCain is the best current possiblility, but for some he seems to lack the style, youth, charisma, and willingness to sell his soul for a political treat. Obama is just that, but lacks a sense of patriotism for the good ole red, white, and blue. Perhaps "joe the plumber" is our best option...

It's funny that people keep saying that Obama is getting 95% of the black vote because he is black. Actually 88% of blacks have always voted Democrat. The other 7% is probably the same percentage, if not less, of white people who are crossing party lines. Funny thing is no one pitched a fit when Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton were running for President. I guess you all like your blacks only as comic relief. As far as the Colin Powell thing. He abandoned the Bush camp long before Obama came along. He's a pretty intelligent man, and I'm sure he feels slighted and jilted by the way the Bush Administration misused his loyalty and trust. Now he has a chance to make amends, and to ,perhaps, steer our country in a more profound and positive direction.

Henry Ford once told a reporter that he was no where near being the smartest man in the room and possessed no desire to be. But that he maintains access to some of the most progressive and intelligent people in the world with just the push of a button. He surrounded himself with experienced and intelligent people. It seems that Obama is doing the same thing. So those of you who say you will lose respect for Powell if he endorses Obama apparently have not thought the whole thing through or are simply feeble minded and selfish. Do you not want Obama to have someone ,whose wisdom and integrity you respect, as an adviser? Insuring the success of his administration and our country. Or are you so inept as to cut off your nose to spite your face?

Hawaii ending universal child health care

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is dropping the only state universal child health care program in the country just seven months after it launched.

Gov. Linda Lingle's administration cited budget shortfalls and other available health care options for eliminating funding for the program. A state official said families were dropping private coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan.

"People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free," said Dr. Kenny Fink, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. "I don't believe that was the intent of the program."

State officials said Thursday they will stop giving health coverage to the 2,000 children enrolled by Nov. 1, but private partner Hawaii Medical Service Association will pay to extend their coverage through the end of the year without government support.

"We're very disappointed in the state's decision, and it came as a complete surprise to us," said Jennifer Diesman, a spokeswoman for HMSA, the state's largest health care provider. "We believe the program is working, and given Hawaii's economic uncertainty, we don't think now is the time to cut all funding for this kind of program."

Hawaii lawmakers approved the health plan in 2007 as a way to ensure every child can get basic medical help. The Keiki (child) Care program aimed to cover every child from birth to 18 years old who didn't already have health insurance — mostly immigrants and members of lower-income families.

It costs the state about $50,000 per month, or $25.50 per child — an amount that was more than matched by HMSA.

State health officials argued that most of the children enrolled in the universal child care program previously had private health insurance, indicating that it was helping those who didn't need it.

The Republican governor signed Keiki Care into law in 2007, but it and many other government services are facing cuts as the state deals with a projected $900 million general fund shortfall by 2011.

While it's difficult to determine how many children lack health coverage in the islands, estimates range from 3,500 to 16,000 in a state of about 1.3 million people. All were eligible for the program.

"Children are a lot more vulnerable in terms of needing care," said Democratic Sen. Suzanne Chun Oakland. "It's not very good to try to be a leader and then renege on that commitment."

The universal health care system was free except for copays of $7 per office visit.

Families with children currently enrolled in the universal system are being encouraged to seek more comprehensive Medicaid coverage, which may be available to children in a family of four earning up to $73,000 annually.

These children also could sign up for the HMSA Children's Plan, which costs about $55 a month.

"Most of them won't be eligible for Medicaid, and that's why they were enrolled in Keiki Care," Diesman said. "It's the gap group that we're trying to ensure has coverage."

How amazing that Colin Powell would think that Obama has a lot to learn but that he is capable. Courageous Americans like Senator Lincoln Chafee, a Republican, saw through the lies, voted against the war, but lost his seat anyway. Meanwhile, Colin Powell, with more information at his disposal than perhaps any other American, chose not only to support the war, but to become its biggest cheerleader, making the case for war before the United Nations. Colin Powell will forever be remembered as the the person who helped to persuade the world of the Bush-Cheney lies. As a result, more than 4000 good soldiers have lost their lives, countless others have been wounded, unconscionable numbers of Iraquis have been killed, wounded, or dislocated, and the economic burden of the war goes on and on and on. Whether Powell knew of the lies is almost irrelevant at this point. Even giving him every benefit of the doubt, he was incompetent and irresponsible at the very least. IHe is the one who has much to learn, and, based on his track record, I am not sure he is capable.

I know Obama graduated from Columbia Magna *** Laude. I believe that's a 3.75 GPA. Good enough to get into Harvard. President of the Harvard Law Review. Usually for extracurricular superlatives you need to have a 3.5 or better to even participate. That should tell you a little bit. And I'm sure you know Harvard speaks for itself. Period.

Let's just put it like this: If you were to give Obama, McCain's accomplishments and vice-a-verse. This race would not even be close. Hell Obama wouldn't have made it past Clinton. And McCain would be crushing any and all competion. Am I right or am I right?

I'm white and I know that blacks have work extra hard to get anywhere in most parts of our country. Any of you ever been to the Southeast? In some places like Alabama and Mississippi and rural Georgia, it's like going back in time. I've never seen anything like it.

As for GEN Powell, I think an endorsement of Sen. Obama would be less about race or redemption, but more about an appreciation for Sen. Obama's potential to communicate a VISION for several ongoing and future problems facing our nation. This is a powerful skill that can both motivate and focus the efforts of many to solve problems. This is something the General recognizes based on his own experiences throughout his military career and it must impress him that Sen. Obama has come by it rather naturally, if not inately. The potential gain for our nation is to have a leader who can both speak eloquently in public, but also guide a group through discussion privately by progressing through a rational process as opposed to a visceral one. In his heart, GEN Powell knows he was ultimately decieved by people who targeted his incredible rationalism, and thus knows the paramount importance of ensuring that the next president possesses both this similar rationalism and other higher skills based on it.

When Mr. Obama talks about raising taxes on only the wealthy, then he must be very NAIVE, as Mrs. Clinton claims, or very deceptive. The wealthy will only pass the taxes on to us, always have, alway will. Mr Obama says he will tax small business' that make over 250,000 dollars, but they won't take the hit, they'll increase their cost to the customer or if they have employees they'll lay off employees that will allow them to make up their loss in taxes. It's the way of business. Everyone wants to be rich, but there are those that will begrudge others for being wealthy, They covet what others have, but are not willing to make the sacrafice that needs to be made to become wealthy. And when Mr. Obama says he will tax big companies like the oil industry again that tax will be passed down to us. But also Big Oil employes tens of thousands of people, besides the spin off business's that employe thousands more, so to tax big oil threatens the jobs of those emplyees or business. Taxes hurt everyone always have always will. And the "little people' end up paying them, again always have always will!!!!!

Colin Powell was a loyal Bush servant, but after he learned that the Iraq invasion plans had been developed as soon a s Bush took office, (as Sec, Paul O'Nell also has written about), and (2) after discovering that he had been given by our CIA and other "intelligence agencies" what was later determined to be fraudulent information and documents about Iraq's supposed WMD for his presentation to he United Nstions, He stayed on long enough to groom Condelezza Rice for his position. But watch Meet -The-Press on Sunday and you will realize that Gen Powell is a true hero and patriot who knows John McCain very well, but who has also spent the last one-two years getting to know Barack Obama: witnessing his intelligence, his judgment, and his understanding of the changes in policies that we need to be undertaking here in the U.S. and around the world. And having worked in so many capacities with many people both in the U.S. and around the world, he has concluded that Barack Obama will not only be a great President, but will re-establish our former position as a world leader.

Apparently he doesn't know he is just a pawn of THE MACHINE like so many others... here is an article about POWELL and Grej is blogging (obviously plagiarizing) about abortion and slavery and rambling about Obama. I guess he couldn't find dirt on Powell? He also didn't mention any dirt about Sen. Richard Lugar (R) who mentored Obama on international relations and actually had good things to say about the Senator from Illinois.

Lugar and Powell are both MARATHON LEADERS and not sprinters per each election. They think and act for the big picture, for long term results, and the people they choose to work with (or not) are for the long haul as well. The fact that Obama has been embraced by them is a very good sign and folks that are familiar with Lugar but not Obama can begin to think about that more (and research that relationship.) If Obama doesn't win this election, he's still a senator and he'll be in the running again another year.

I am wondering what "Grej" would say to a Harvard grad today? Why wouldn't that student's schooling mean anything? He sounds like a sore loser.

I rarely "blog" and during this election season I have spent more of my time reading election news from AS MANY SOURCES as possible from around the world. With the Internet, there is no excuse not to do so. Read from left to right and right to left and up and down the middle, with as many accents as you can. Ok, folks, tell me when is the last time when a president kept his campaign’s words and promises? Did Carter? He was the disaster of the modern history! Did Clinton? He was a prostitute that democrats were proud of!!! Did Bush? Look at our borders and the latest “sell out package”! Also look at how the war was conducted – the worst commander in chief. So, campaign promises are meant for the surface thinkers. Obama and camp exploits these with full blow – and reality is these are predominantly the crowds. Don’t be fooled by words!!! Look at the substance of the matter. If character and true morals are not the foundation of the selection process, America is no longer a super power!!!

Secondly, CHANGE, to what? To become a new Soviet Union? A socialist Canada? Look at how Europe is flooded by Islam and how Islam has devoured the very fabric of the democratic society. Soon Europe will be an Islamic movement. Change to WHAT? To the liberal ideas Obama and democrats stand for? To the perversion-to-the max, forced indoctrination of children with all the gay agenda, and universal social help with no reasonability and accountability?

Unfortunately we have two very weak options available: Hussein (doesn’t he hate his own name - or else he would not hide it? also thanks to a strong media machinery ally to help for the good liberal cause.... but that’s a totally different discussion) and McCain.

To me the fundamental question is: who is likely to push the country to its knees and ultimate destruction, Hussein Obama or McCain? Answer is crystal clear: Hussein. The only option we are left with is unfortunately McCain.

But there is another serious problem with Mr. Barack Hussein Obama: he is not qualified, according to the constitution, to be even a Senator, let alone to be a president. You might be suppressed, but this is as true as is true that your eyes read these words. This is not “throw mud in Obama’s face”. These are historical and verifiable facts. <b>Obama was not born on US territory</b> and evidence shows he does not even have American citizenship. Surprised? Wow, Now here is one man I truly respect and admire for years now. I seriously think that if Powell has ran for office in 2000 he would have won the nomination. Everyone in the country knows that he is qualtified to be president, and his endorsement to Obama would to me be personal to the GOP. I think the world of Powell, but if he endorse Obama and McCain wins then what? If Powell was smart I think he should publically respect Obama but endorse McCain. I think it is going to be a real shocker if McCain wins because there are so many republicans jumping ship, now that would be a story......... Why We Need to Abolish Corporate Welfare

Corporate welfare is defined by the Cato Institute as "any government spending program that provides unique benefits or advantages to specific companies or industries." Although transfer payments in general (to the extent they redistribute the earned incomes of labor and capital) are morally wrong, corporate welfare is the worst transfer payment of all because it constitutes stealing from the poor in order to give to the rich. Examples of such giveaways can be found online at the Banneker Center's corporate welfare shame page.

The federal government currently spends roughly $93 billion a year on programs that provide subsidies to private businesses. Not only does this give big business an unfair advantage over smaller competitors, it gives politicians an excuse to deny much-needed tax relief to the bottom 75% of taxpayers -- those who, according to the Tax Foundation, make less than $55,226 a year.

Specifically, the bottom 75% (over 96 million people) pay approximately $156.8 billion a year in federal income taxes -- with those who make below $27,682 (the bottom 50%) paying a little over $38.3 billion, and those who make between $27,682 and $55,225 paying the rest.

Thus, if we eliminated corporate welfare, that alone would allow for the income tax to be reduced by nearly 1/2 for those making between $27,682 and $55,225, and abolished entirely for those making below $27,682. This would benefit wage-earners enormously by offsetting the regressive nature of the payroll tax, and would benefit small businesses by eliminating the anticompetitive nature of corporate welfare spending.

We have seen the experience of Cheney who is the brain behind this administration taking us on the path of disater. We have seen McCain own example lately showing bad jugements about the economy and changing of positions frequently, we have seen McCain s bad decision for the Irak war, we have seen McCain s bad decisions and jugements on the de-regulation issue he supported all his career in the senate, seemly McCain did not learned his lesson from the S& L crisis and de-regulation that caused it. We have seen McCain s bad judgement selecting Palin and the strategy of attacks, fear mongering, hatred in his campaign and ads. So, if McCain experience has not help him to learn to do good decisions and have wise jugements, then how much is his EXPERIENCE really worth?

Look what they said about Clinton, the same thing, that he had no experience and look the results, the brightest times in our economy, prosperity. Because he was intelligent, bright and was, still is, a visionary, plus surounded himself with the best staff (not cronies).

Consider. If Powell is going to endorse a candidate, then that means that it has to be Obama, the simple reason being that Powell was misled into going to the U.N. with contrived data to justify the war by those presently in power and he would not be inclined to give any of them the time of day. Despite Mc Cain's effort to disconnect with the present incompetents, it can't be done effectively enough to work unless the whole bunch is fired and replaced, and the best way to do that is to elect the candidate of the other party.

Best of all, endorsing Obama is the best way to respond to those who so cavalierly ruined a part of Powell's reputation. Revenge is best when exercised thusly, swift and cold. The only race involved in this is the presidential race. Stick 'em, Colin. They deserve it.

Being a Military man myself under the Reagan administration and knowing much about Powell I can't see why he would endorse anyone but Obama. I remember when there was talk of Powell running for President himself, I was excited and hopeful that he would do so. Disappointed that he didn't. Most Independent voters like myself have already made up their mind, I will be casting my vote for "That One" on Nov. 4th regardless of who endorses who.

Even if Powell endorses no one, it is effectively an endorsement of Obama. I think he might well endorse Obama. Like you say, not because Obama is African American. Rather, because he is the right man for America - domestically and for foreign policy. Its that simple. That he is an African American is a bonus for the struggles of his race and the other minority races in America. Let's see what he does. I like the man, only I wish he would have bailed on Bush before going into Iraq. But then, its easy for me to say and I too in his position may well have done the same thing, believing in my leader.

Everyone of voting age should read these two books written by Obama, 'Dreams of My Father' and 'Audacity of Hope'. Don't buy them, get them from the library before they are removed from the shelves.

Taxing people who make over $250,000 a year more than those who make $50,000 a year is not socialism. It is informative to read US census data and learn how much the average American makes per year. John McCain makes a lot of money every year. The average American does not. If you want to use terms like "socialism" to describe of a higher tax rate for those who make more money, fine. But you might want to know what the word means and have the facts to support it.

I am weary of the so-called Right Wing soundbiters who wave a "loaded" term around to try to create truth and influence others. Tyrants use this technique to rouse the rabble to sway people to their point of view. It it also used to create fear and promote violence. It is a technique used by people who have real or constructive to offer.

I am ashamed and frightened by the polarization and internal hatred in my country. I am ashamed by citizens who are arrogant toward and dismissive of others that do not hold their polarized views. I am frightened because of what history teaches and the path down which some of our leadership would take this country. I am ashamed by citizens who do not read widely, who do not think clearly, who do not consider any other viewpoint than their own. I am ashamed of greed, corruption, and lies in our government. Our country was founded on a set of fragile ideas that can only survive if we act responsibly, work together, and respect each other's rights.

Since the government now provides insurance against failure of large businesses by bailing them out with taxpayer money, they need to be limited to small profits just as their employees receive limited wages instead of gigantic profits as their employers do who no longer have risk of failure. We need a Corporate Profits Limit Tax in exchange for keeping them from failing when they should fail due to negligence, sheer negligence, avarice and undeniable greed. Just socialize the whole works.

Jim Johnson, no matter how many times people tell you that Obama is against socialism, you keep posting these blogs that accuse Obama of socialism and communism. It is not true and you know it. You are just trying to smear Obama and make people afraid.

In his book Audacity of Hope, Obama writes at length about the FAILURE of SOCIALISM and the failure of communism. He enthusiastically states that American democracy is the greatest political system on earth. Obama is not a socialist, and he does not admire socialism.

To you, Jim, and to all of the conservatives out there who think that Obama is a flaming liberal, I would like to remind you of what he did when he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. The Law Review President gets to name ten individuals to write articles for the Review, and these ten people also get to control the content of the publication. All of the minorities and the liberals thought they finally had it made, that Obama would appoint ten left wing editors. Instead, Obama appointed three conservatives, three liberals and four moderates. That year the Law Review was critically acclaimed as the best run and best written Harvard publication in decades.

So when he wins in November, conservatives don't have to freak out. Obama is a centrist and will appoint a balanced cabinet full of active people who will really get things done. Kind of like the way our multi-cultural society is supposed to be. And exactly what we need in this time of economic crisis.

The right wing commentary will get more and more ideological. It will try to paint Obama what he is not. That is their only hope. It is not going to work.

To those who spout off about Obama being Socialist. Well, if he is a socialist, then McCain and Bush are bush-wacking Pirates, dressed in business suits. So are those running the large businesses these days with "golden parachutes", with special note of the oil companies, car companies and the investment banks.

The American people are starting to tune out the Republican Party. And rightly so. I think the reason is simple - America as a Nation trumps the Republican Party. Many are starting to see through the Republican facade. William Buckley Jr. even gets it but the Party Leaders and demagogues do not - especially people like Rush and de Rothschild and Bush. The Party is so imbued in its own Propaganda, in its own sense of Superiority and Self Righteousness, that it has indeed lost its way.

The Party has something of a Maoist sentiment of being the ruling Party and the Ruling Class. In spite of the dissent of most of the Nation. Republicans need to seize the levers of the Party, tear it down and rebuild from the grass roots up. Its ownership is too centered in selfish ideological hands and its philosophy has gone Piratical, way too right wing. It is way out of the mainstream. For so long it has been there, and held its ground by moving the mainstream and demonizing the left. No more.

I believe that Republicans do not have a lock on conservatism - indeed, Obama knows that you need to be fiscally conservative to be more socially liberal. Otherwise it does not add up. Obama and the Democrats also understand you can't let the Foxes run the Hen Houses, and certainly not under self policing policies. And certainly not with limits on liability if they eat all the Hens and can't replace them when caught.

Republicans today do not understand the concept of collective. This is mostly because they are the ones that are benefiting from the Caveman's survival of the fittest ideas and the "ownership" society. They have the money and the power and they view and work politics to maintain it. They feel entitled and they pay lip service to social (collective) policies while generally demonizing them.

Republican Party leaders and their rich backers want to keep giving the mainstream masses a wind up toy. A Bush, a Palin, a McCain or any Barbie or Ken will do. Just dress 'em up and get them talkin' just like ole "Joe Six Pack" and "Joe the Plumber" whoever that is. Its sure not you or me. Let them think their leaders are just like you. This has kept the masses happy, while Republicans and cronies eat the Hens.

Of course, when the Hens are noticed missing, it will be someone else' fault. Probably the Democrats somehow, it does not matter how, or someone in Iraq. No wait, it might be Putin, or possibly its Castro, no wait he's almost dead, okay then, Chavez ...... Or maybe that Muslim Arab Socialist African Malaysian Hawaiian and UnAmerican Obama...... And so the tomfoolery goes........

And to be clear - liberals are not socialists. The latter is a word sullied by dictators and megalomaniacs. Theirs' is a false concept of socialism, used for selfish gain and to keep the masses poor and in chains. As McCain has said - strong backs, or the backbone of America is that American laborer. A back strong enough to carry the malarkey called Republican Conservatism or, I think, Piratical Conservative is more fitting.

There is no stronger Nation than one with a well run economic engine. One that is fairly and sensibly regulated. One that shares the wealth equitably. One that is built on morally sound incentive systems for its operators. One with a collective advancement and support system for all its members.

Republicans will tell us that you don't send into battle men without protection and weapons. You don't send men untrained or uneducated on the use of weapons. You don't win battles or the war by leaving your compatriots unprotected. And for sure you don't leave the weak and wounded behind in battle. Their rescue is the mark of heroes. If this is heroic in the battlefields of war, why not so in the battlefields of life?

America is indeed headed for a brighter future with Obama than with McCain.

I am not a conservative and Obama is not a centrist. He is the tofu candidate of the century. add the flavor of your choice and that's what you get. he isthe blank sceen onto which folks project their own wishes. I don't know how to vote because I have no idea who Obama is or what he stands for. He might be fine, he might be great, he might be awful. it feels to me a little like jumping into a pool without knowing if you're going to land in water, quicksand or hard cement. the only way to do that with a gun to my head - so I guess it be time to take another look at Nadar and Barr!

This is over. America is sick of Republicans destroying this country and they are throwing you out. Long over due.

Neoconmen lied this country into a disasterous war that did not need to be fought while ignoring the one that did. They outted a covert CIA operative working on WMD to further their war lies. They lied repeatedly under oath about it. They have destroyed the economy with their "Reagan Republican" free market fundamentalism. They have caused the poor and middle classes to fall far behind while enriching those that least needed it. The disparity in class has not been larger since the Great Depression. Now we are on the verge of another. They watched as thousands died in NOLA and whined and complained when they were blamed for their innaction. They have made us a torture state and shredded the constitution. They have repeatedlty violated International Law, Federal Law and the Uniformed Coder for Uniformed Justice. As a result, we have never been weaker as a nation than we are right now.

That is just a sampling of the reasons they are being disposed of.

Now as their bony claws are being pulled away from the power they have wielded, they have become ever mre dishonest, beligernt and divisive. Their rallies, their websites and their advertising has become an outright hatefest. John McCain has sold out his honor with his lied and smears while seeking the power that he will never get. He even hired the same dirty operatives that tanked him in 2000 with another ugly, racist smear campaign. He will go down as a sad and tragic victim of the lust for power. Power he will not get after desttroying his own reputation for it..

You Republicans have utterly blown it and are being shoved into the box you crawled out of. Hopefully, you will stay there and the word "conservative" become as reviled as you made the word "liberal" for the past two decades. That is the least you deserve for the damage you have done to this country.

I hope you hate the next four or eight years as much as those of us that have fought your crimes for the last eight have hated watching you destroy ths country that we love.

That ends NOW.

Powell can do what he wants. As far as I am concerned the day he told those whopping neocon lies to the UN, he lost all credibility. At least he seems to understand that much. But, this does not remotely make up for his lies and the bloody and needless war he helped start. Fortunately for all of us, Barack will end that tragedy once and for all.

I am unsure if Mr Powell will endorse anyone for president at this time or any. But I believe that he as Mr Fineman has pointed out, he is not interested in the same ride 'em cowboy that we have had for the last eight years. While Mr Powell has not spoken diectly of his dilike for the people he worked for his silence to speak of them speaks volumes.

Also if you look at Mr Powells socail views he is more in line with Mr. Obama than Mr Mccain. Also Mr Powell does not nor did he believe that the invasion of Iraq was in the best interest of America with out UN approval, and the contiuned presense has not created a save atomsphpere for American nor its image.

While I stated that I was unsure abotu the endorsement as Mr Fineman has pointed it would not be because of any other thought than Mr Obama shares a lot in comon with Mr Powells ideas of visions for the US and our role around the world.

I would only add to it that if Colin Powell does indeed endorse Senator Obama on Meet the Press, the following factors are likely to have also played a role in Colin Powell's decision:

1) Powell understands that the world at-large is holding its breath in anticipation of America finally practicing what it has long preached (i.e. wherein a person is judged by the content of his character not the color of his skin);

2) That at this critical point in history, the world needs America to exercise leadership by the power of its examples rather than by examples of its power;

3) That Senator Obama is a consensus builder and not an Erratic Maverick;

4) That Senator Obama is future looking to lead America to where it should be and not back to the past seeking to recapture where it has been;

5) That Senator Obama will encourage the better angels of all of us rather than pander to the needs of the few; and most importantly, in Colin Powell's view

6) That Senator Obama's judgement on foreign policy issues has been validated as sound, appropriate, and necessary.

Tomorrow could well be another major turning point in this election because as much Colin Powell's endorsement of Senator Obama will say to America about the readiness of Senator Obama, it will say a whole lot more to America about the unreadiness of Senator John McCain in the eyes of Colin Powell who happens to be one of the few remaining greatly respected Republicans in this country and in the world.

Obama is for continuing the war on terror, but instead of continuing it in a country where there were not wmds we need to focus on the war we NEVER FINISHED in Afghanistan. Do you think we waved the white flag of surrender there too ? Or do you honestly believe it was Mission Accomplished ?

It is idiotic and costly both monitarily and in peoples lives to continue this ridiculous war.

This Sunday Colin Powell publicly offered a fully informed, comprehensively concise evaluation, and clearly objective yet thoughtful summary of the critical factors on which he based, judged, and reached his decision to endorse Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. 1. If Karl Rove is the Architect of the Bush Administration and then Donald Rumsfield was the Architech of the Iraq War then Colin Powell was ARCHITECH of the argument made before the UN to go TO WAR WITH IRAQ! So why is this such a great endorsement?

Why did Obama seek Powell's endorsement anyway???? McCain I can see but why Obama??? His whole campaign from the Primary to the General Election was running on ALWAYS being against the IRAQ WAR. And anyone who voted for it (Hillary Clinton) was wrong and did not have good judgment. So why would he want an endorsement of someone who made the CASE TO GO TO IRAQ?
