It is pure socialism, with big well-fare spending, bigger government-control, and higher taxes to finance all the spending, that means more and more regulations and less and less freedom for people, a concept that does not work in Europe.

Mr. Fineman, I applaud your article, as it hit the nail on the head concerning Palin. Yet McCain continues to say he's "proud" of her? Proud of what, I can't help wonder. It is certainly not her intellect, as she shows to have very little. Her main appeal appears to be her appearance and the ability to talk like someone who is not very intelligent. That is just sad! But, I cannot put it into better words than Colin Powell did. Palin was a very poor choice for VP and has proven that over and over again. I would think about the main group that would like to see her VP is the Alaskan wolves. If she became VP, then she would be in Washington and not in Alaska, shooting them from the airplane.

Mr. McCain is an honerable man. He NAS to say he is proud of Gov. Palin. His campaign chose her for him. He may have made the final decision - but the campaign had him so twisted around that he made a poor choice. He will not throw her under the bus; rather he will suck it up and do his best with what he's got.

If he's chosen Ridge, Pawlenty, or Lieberman it may have gone the other way on him. I am sure they showed him the math and he felt it was better to secure the far right rather than appease the moderates. Either way he would lose -

Thanks for the article. The VP choice was very questionable, it seems now we have more answers about Palin than questions. One party that she is hurting is her very own. Just because, lots and lots of people turned to watch VP debate, or watch SNL with Ms.Palin is in NO WAY an indication of people respecting and admiring her views, or her as a person. At least, she can be quite entertaining.

Who "Joe the plumber" may be is not the issue, though it's easy to see why the Dems want it to be. That's because the real issue is what Obama's comments to him revealed about Obama. In the exchange with "Joe the plumber" we find out that Obama really is as radical as his early political acquaintances, Davis, Ayers, Wright, etc., and that he is into the failed economic policy of wealth redistribution. Obama's tax and spending plans alone would be bad enough, but add Reid and Pelosi to the mix, with the three of them controlling both houses of Congress and the executive branch without any effective restraint, and you have something that should causes concern even among moderate Democrats.

Point is, Obama's programs are to tax, and it does not really matter who he taxes, those taxes are going to be passed through the economy. He has to tax, because it is they only way he can pay for his massive social engineering experiments. Any first year economics student knows that taxation is a tool used to contract an economy experiencing inflation, because it reduces demand by reducing the amount of money individuals and businesses have to spend. It is contractionary, which is exactly what you do not want to do when the problem is that the economy is contracting already into recession. Like Hoover and FDR, Obama's plans will only make it worse for longer.

A NORAD officer felt compelled t contact the media and announce that was a lie. Rather than question Obama's judgment, McCain should examine his own.

The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. He's a socialist, he's a terrorist, he's a Muslim! This is the leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the economy, and off the fact that Palin has been found guilty of abusing the power of her office, that she is in contempt of court for obstruction of justice. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify?

This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed on national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I endorsed a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, and the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

Palin is an albatross plain and simple. Crist in Florida would have been a much better pick. Not sexy, not exciting, but he would have captured who needed to be captured in the Republican party: the moderate-middle-of-the-road population who doesn't eat, drink,and sleep religion. Gay marriage, abortion (though, I in no way want to diminish the importance of this issue), and intelligent design doesn't keep people up at night. Two of the three are so ridiculous it's pathetic. The economy, health care and war does, however, cause people to toss and turn in the dark of night. Palin doesn't help McCain with any of these. Romney, Pawlenty, Ridge and Crist would have. It was a desperate move that has ulitmately blown up in his face. I'm hoping the republican party will either go ahead and split with the religious right, or at the very least, put them in their place for the sake of the future of the party. A schism wouldn't be the end of the world. There's plenty of middle of the road democrats who aren't exactly enamored with Obama as well. Rescue the country from the far right and left!

I think the article missed a large point. I was NOT a big Obama fan. I'm a registered Democrat (but not fanatical). I am not Republican, Jewish or a "PUMA".

I had reservations about him. I supported McCain in 2000 until he was crushed by George Bush. I grudingly looked over the issues of Obama and McCain and was leaning toward Obama, but not really excited about the prospects.... UNTIL....

Until Sarah Palin was chosen by John McCain as his running mate. No matter what I may think about John McCain, putting Sarah Palin in the White House is COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE. Sure, she's great for the base and she can read a script really well. That doesn't make her qualified in any way.

She was a journalist major who became Mayor of a town of 5,000 people. She was Govenor of Alaska with a whopping 670,000 people in it for just 16 months before being tapped by McCain. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS SHE FIT TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY. There we so many other QUALIFIED women in the Republicn party he could have chosen, but he didn't.

Couple that with her negative Obama bashing and I had had enough. It's really bad when someone is spouting the same old hateful rheotric weeks after it's been debunked by every source imaginable.

Since that time, I have jumped into the Obama camp with both feet. I've given money (a sizeable chunk and giving more today). I've made calls on his behalf to get out the vote. I am completely motivated to whatever I can to keep Sarah Palin out of the White House.

And the more I have heard from the debates and the constant negative campaigning, the more entrenched and supportive I am. And I'm in a bracket that will GET the tax hike from Obama (unlike poor "Joe the Plumber"). I run a small business and frankly see that Obama will provide a better environment to expand my business and employ more people. However, that by itself would not have spurred me to vigorously support Obama.

If it wasnt' for Sarah Palin I would not be giving money and time to see Obama elected. Imagine if the day after Inauguration that John McCain has a stroke or is in an some way unable to continue as President. Does ANYONE think that Sarah Palin has what it takes to run this country???

I most definitely do not. So add a fourth demographic to your article... the apathetic voter who is now solidly in the Obama camp. THIS is why Obama is getting so much money and why God wiling he will be the next President of the United States.

Palin has proven to be consistently deceptive to others and even to herself, claiming: that she knows more about Energy than anyone else, that she knows Russia very well (I'm sure the Russians in Russia are laughing and drinky themselves silly at this), that she will stop the abuse of powers when she was just found guilty of it as the Alaskan governor, that she is qualified to be the VP.... I just wonder how that meeting went when she met McCain for the first time and told/sold him all those self-delusions. He apparently bought it hook-line and sinker. The fact he did so without fact-finding and researching her credibility just shows his lack of wisdom.

Palin's actual stint on SNL was completely embarrasing for her, McCain and the GOP in general. Host Tom Brolin's comment about how his role in the movie "W" just proved to him that neither he nor the real George W. was fit to be president got major applause - all said under Palin's nose. And to me, SNL was not trying to be ironic during the Weekend Update segment when the writers let her sit back while the SNL actors humiliated her character....right in front of here while she danced along to it... She was thrown under the truck in my opinion and she probably did not even realize that. Wow what a stupid move to go on SNL.

Please find below an excerpt of what Senator Barack Obama actually said to Samuel Joe Wurzelbacher when asked about the affect of his tax plan on Wurzelbacher's dream of owning a business.

and he asked if his taxes would rise under Obama’s economic plan. The Senator acknowledged that they might. “Nobody likes high taxes,” Obama said. “Of course not.” Still, he explained:

I do believe that for folks like me who’ve worked hard but frankly also been lucky ('alluding to individuals with $250,000 of net income or higher'), I don’t mind paying just a little bit more than the waitress who I just met over there. . . . She can barely make the rent. . . . And I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody."

These comments don't reveal any insidious hidden tax agenda that you try to imply. And to your claim, that you state that Obama's intent along with Reid and Pelosi, is to tax plain and simple. Well that is only your groundless belief, sir. I don't think you have any more powers of precognition than I. I do believe that Obama will eventually call upon America to make a sacrifice to further our growth as a nation at some later point. Hell, based on the damage that has been done by the present Republican Regime, I would think we might have to make many sacrifices to right this nation. But I think he will be measured and thoughtful before he calls upon us, the American people to act in our own interests. That is my belief, and I just think my belief will be far closer to the truth than yours.

Now let me illustrate why I believe in and trust in my candidate, Barack Obama.

Barack Obama has never been implicated much less indicted with unethical behavior in his career as a civil servant. Neither in his short stint as a US Senator or in his time as a Ilinois State Senator.

My candidate has shown far more respect, decency and deference to his opponents than what has been afforded him.

Barack Obama has shown far better judgement in choosing his vice presidential candidate, Joseph Biden. To which it can only be stated that Joe Biden is a fine example of statesman and legislator.

Barack Obama's plans and platforms have been consistent, well thought out, and so simplistic as to be clear, if not appeal to the average citizen.

Normally, these attributes and characteristics would simply be a great starting point for a presidential campaign. But in this particular presidential campaign, with the way the McCain-Palin ticket has been horribly handled, this contest should already be over. I don't need to point out the numerous detractions and liabilities that have come out of the McCain-Palin campaign. I am sure you have been watching your Republican campaign implode for the better part of two months. No decency, no honor and no integrity. The fact that the Republican Party has the audacity to still claim Christian and Conservative values is despicable. That is the ultimate show of hypocrisy. Lies stacked upon untruths hidden by falsehoods. The McCain-Palin campaign is quite possibly the most shamefully run campaign in modern American Electorial History.

I am certain that you are proud, Nowforthetruth. Save yourself from looking like both a fool and a hypocrite by stopping your senseless pandering of further lies and untruths. Cynical Americans are mich better at uncovering the truth than you think. We have the Republican Party to thank for that.

I, personally, dislike Ms. Pailn. I guess if she were running for beauty pageant queen or acting some part in a play or movie, I would be more supportive. but if that were the case, I would be judging her purely based on her performance as an actress or model, not on her personal character or potential as president. As she is running for US VP, I have had no choice but to examine her record, her character and her history, more so than her performance. And that examination made me deeply dislike this woman.

Cute though she may be, I find her lacking in character. She has proven to be a woman who relies on her good looks and personality to gain support while she avoids the substance we need in a leader. She has lied without shame and is more than willing to divide this nation over class and color in hopes of becoming one of the most powerful people in the nation.

She tried to keep the troopergate investigation at bay till after the election and her husband and employees defied subpoenas in an effort to obstruct justice. If I defied a subpoena, I would find myself in jail, but when you are associated with a presidential candidate, you are not subject to law the way the rest of us are. Of course the investigators are partisan and their findings are nothing short of a lie .... after all, isn't that what politicians do best? Lie?

Additionally, there are has not been any ethics investigations over her firing of a state official who went around her and requested funding from the federal government to replace the state funding she nixed for medical examinations for women who had been the victims of sexual crimes. And no one seems to be concerned about the fact that she also ended funding for special needs support in the state of Alaska. Oh, but now she has given birth to a special needs child, she is pandering to parents with special needs children. Just because she has a child with downs syndrome does not mean she is going to champion other parents who have children with special needs. Let us not forget that this is the same woman who spent 35k to bring a tanning bed into the governor's mansion while cutting state programs for special needs support.

Cute she may be but ethical, truthful, presidential or vice-presidential, she is not. And her religious zeal is dangerous as she projects that is her way or the highway when it comes to religious belief and seems to forget the law requires there be a separation between church and state. Her brand of Christianity does not reflect that of the majority. It is extremest, to say the least. Furthermore, while there are more Christians in this nation than there are people practicing other religions ... this is NOT a CHRISTIAN Nation. Not if we are to uphold the US Constitution which separates religion and government and gives all citizens the right to religious choice.

If you want to vote for a beauty queen, vote for the Palin Ticket. If you want to cast your vote for the good of the nation, you will cast your vote for anyone that does not include Palin on the ticket.

Ms. Palin was a popular cheerleader of sorts during her 2 weeks of celebrity, but what she stands for as a candidate leaves alot to be desired. Both her academic and her work history are mediocre.

She transferred colleges 5 times before getting a career in Journalism, though for some reason she lacks the ability to spontaneously take questions and do interviews with the media?. Her politcal experience really hasn't exceeded that of other successful female politicians who had to face a much more rigorous campaign and more complex issues as head of a major city or state. Palin has accomplished little compared to other female governmental leaders such as Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, Jennifer Granholm, Janet Napolitano, and Shirley Franklin. Lastly, even Palin's view towards Evolution, Stem-cell research, and Gay marriage sharply contrast with those of mainstream American voters. Her recent behavior at her campaign rallies now has voters questioning her ethics, let alone her qualifications to become our next VP. Joe Biden is a better choice for our nation's next VP.

Actually it is about 8 30 am where I am right now, so before you make acussations know who you are dealing with. I am a Fire Captain and have spent the past 24 years working both domestically and overseas protecting the interests of folks like you, who prefer to remain safe and reap the benefits of those who put it on the line for you everyday. Now you are probally a good person, but you also probally have not seen first hand the attitudes of folks who are what I call "Lifers" on some of these social programs. Throwing more of our hard earned money is not going to fix the problem.

Obamas plan will take more of our hard earned money and put it into programs to support folks who dont want to work. If you dont believe me in regards to folks not wanting to work, spend some time riding on an inter-city fire engine and seeing what it is really like. When was the last time you were in the projects???? Why should people who work hard and make a good living be penalized for their efforts while others are allowed to sit and do nothing and get the benefits?

Now back to Palin. I agree with Fineman and when I heard her speak at the RNC I believe that she not only energized the Republican base but she also woke up the Democratic base. She not only personified the intellectual bankruptcy of the far right but her selection single handedly destroyed the media narrative about McCain. If he was truly a maverick he would have selected Lieberman or Ridge and if he wanted to assuage the base and effectively govern, he would have chosen Romney or Pawlenty. I have read a lot about Gov. Palin and she never hesitates to eviscerate those who helped her succeed, and over the past week or so she has clearly positioned herself as the standard bearer for the extreme right of the party. Let's recap: she publicly said that it was a mistake for McCain to pull out of Michigan, today she said that thought robo calling was the old way of doing things and annoying (even though she recorded one herself), and she indicated that she would support a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage which is contrary to McCain's position. Now if that doesn't sound like someone getting out of the line of fire and shoring up her conservative base, I don't know what does.

Yet although I totally agree about those 'lifers' - who are permitted to waste their existence and our money because WE are too lazy to put together a system that will get their buns in gear. All we do is throw cash at them. Obama is in a rather unique position to do this because he managed to effectively say that some people should stop using their "victim" status as a means to gain advantage. Couldn't agree more. Palin was certainly a controversial pick - aside from her folksy quips, perky stride and vicious mouth - she hasn't helped McCain's campaign. She has "inspired" the GOP base and certainly John McCain but other than inciting hatred, racist and ethnic divide at rallies - what has she done and why haven't we really seen her? She hasn't made an impact by herself - she only speaks the same canned speech stump rhetoric. She has only been seen as an attack dog - not a viable, informed and articulate running mate. By making news appearances with McCain she looks even more unqualified - especially when McCain steps in to answer or follow up on what she has already said. She still hasn't proven herself by not appearing on real news programs like Meet the Press, etc. to test her true intelligence, knowledge and qualifications.

After 9/11, the US government started rounding up Muslims without cause and without due process of law, like we did to the Japanese Americans in WWII. The Bush administration called it's main internment camp Guantanamo Bay. While there are certainly many guilty terrorists held in Guantanamo, there are also many innocent American citizens who have been held illegally for years without even being charged with any crime. They have been tortured by our government. Some of them have died.

Recently the Supreme Court ruled against the Bush administration in the matter of Guantanamo Bay. The Supreme Court Justices were NOT on the side of the terrorists. They were on the side of the Geneva Convention, that says you can not torture POWs, and on the side of US laws that state you can not imprison a person without charging them with a crime and bringing them to trial. I'm sure that like most Americans, the Justices who voted against the illegal, immoral doings at Guantanamo didn't feel sympathy for the terrorists. They felt sympathy for the laws of AMERICA, the land of the FREE, where even rat finks get a fair trial.

Meanwhile, back in Iraq, the Bush administration is busy trying to build a smokescreen to hide the CRIMES they have committed. Those pesky weapons of mass destruction. Just think, the National Debt went up over 6 trillion dollars under Bush. More than 2 trillion of it went directly into the pockets of Halliburton, a corporation owned by the Cheney family. Halliburton is now a DUBAI corporation and therefore is not subject to US taxes. All that money they took out of the US Treasury is going into the coffers of a MUSLIM country.

Did you hear about how the US government is being charged millions for Halliburton deliveries of sand into Iraq from Kuwait? Sand. Like there is a shortage of sand in Iraq? Another contractor shipped sand from Idaho to Iraq at our expense. Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz discusses these and other excesses of our current government's out of control spending in Iraq.

Your grandchildren will be working like slaves to pay off this debt, so that the Bushes and Cheneys can live the high life in Dubai.

Yeah, they're patriots, Bush&Co. They wear flag pins. And hide the money they stole from America in Dubai.

And they want me to believe that Obama is a socialist. Right.

1. By rashly picking an unvetted person, he undermined his own credibility as a decisionmaker who is concerned about the security of the nation.

As one of the people who will actually PAY more taxes, I say your argument is ridiculous. The differencs is 3%.... 3 freaking percent, of NET income between $250,000 and 349,000 (and with deduction that means a gross income of over $325,000+ depending upon your mortgage). So, about $3,000 more for that extra $100,000 in income. And over that we will see a 4.6% increase, so about $4,600 per $100,000 of income. In no way shape or form will that hurt Small Business or keep me from expanding.

So you want to give up making OVER $250,000 a year and filp burgers for $7.25 an hour just because you have to pay 3% more in taxes over $250,000???!!! I don't believe you for a second. You are just being greedy and that is one of the things that got us into this mess in the first place.

All Obama is doing is returning the tax rates on the $250,000+ earners to what they WERE BEFORE BUSH REDUCED THEM. The fact is OUR taxes pay for the entire government to operate. Salaries, social security, defense, schools, police, Homeland Security, FAA, FDA, welfare, food stamps and the whole nine yards. But let's get real. People who make over $250,000 a year HAVE DOZENS OF LOOPHOLES that keep their percentage down. Heck, every year I get back over $20,000 in taxes because I have a lot of deductions and I have them take out as little as possible from my paycheck.

The point is people who make over $250,000 a year can AFFORD to pay $3,000 on an extra $100,000 each year. We can write off mortgages up to $1.2 million dollars. We have business deductions up the wazoo. We have tax loopholes. Vacation homes. Tax shelters. Long term capital gains. 401 (k0 plans. The list goes on and on.

So, would I pay an extra $3,000 on my income from $250,000 to $349,000 so that my employees can live a better lifestyle and more people can afford to buy my products? Absolutely. It's a great investment.

If you want to chuck it all and go flip burgers, go right ahead. If you truly make over $250,000, I somehow don't think the extra $3,000 is going to put a dent in what you spend or how you live. I know it won't affect me. If it wasn't for the middle class, I wouldn't have a company that is successful and affords me the opportunity to be in the top 5%.

McCain's tax plan will put more money in my pocket, but at the expense of the middle class. That is NOT the American way.

Think4yourself - SNL is not a barometer of what this country needs in leadership. As a woman I'm so embarassed by Palin. She may be an OK person, but she is in NO WAY qualified to be president. If the Democrats had picked her, the Republicans would have been all over her with negative comments.

It would be like hiring your babysitter to run AT&T. A nice person who you like well enough to leave your kids with - but is in no way ready to run one of the largest organizations in the world. If elected - she will be a laughing stock all over the world.

On a side note - I also hate her nasal shrieking voice. This is not a cheerleading contest. To discuss things like a normal adult, maybe she can turn down the volume????

Sarah Palin is a mom of 5, a soon to be grandmother, and loves to hunt. She is the Governor of a state of 600,000 and was the Mayor of a town of 6000. She hired a lobbyist to bring in earmarks over 28 million dollars, and as Governor has requested more earmarks than any other state per ca pita.

She is tough. When the news media keeps telling everyone that she did not sell the state jet on ebay, or that she was not always against the bridge to nowhere, she sticks to her scripts. In the face of truth, she is able to repeat her stomp speech and not change a thing. Not many politicians can say that.

She stood up to Charlie Gibson in her interview and said, "Yes, I am ready to be president." She is ready. How many people can say they are ready to be president. Why do the liberals want to ask her questions about her past or what she believes in? This is not fair. She has a right to be VP without explaining herself. Katie Couric should be ashamed of using gotcha politics. Who watches SNL ? They should do a skit on Obama not taxing anyone over 65 that makes under $50,000 a year.

She also stated that she did not blink when McCain asked her to be VP. This is proof that she is a patriot. She will take on Russia, and go to war if necessary to protect our great US of A. She is ready to be VP and even President.

McCain knew it after meeting with her twice that she was his soul mate. McCain's gut told him- now that is the kind of guy that I want leading the country. A man that tosses reason and logic out of the window and goes with his gut. Unlike that wimp Obama; who wants to talk or use diplomacy first.

Proven by all of the things I have listed. Who cares about The Bush Doctrine? She is a mother of 5, not a baby killer. She looks like the girl next door, and has a comprehensive energy plan that includes only drilling. She will not drill in Indiana, Ohio or Michigan, but there will be lots of jobs in Alaska- America's Last Frontier.

I think Biden is right, and that some bozo somewhere will pull some stunt to test a new president Obama - and live to regret it. Her campaigning was carefully cloistered so that she was not questioned in depth and it was soon appearing to be a big act to make the McCain Campaign look better with some youth and a little more pazzzaz than old McCain had going for him. The United States of America has what’s known as a representative government. It's not a democracy, it’s a republic blended with democratic values (The Bill of Rights).

What has long been reasoned by people (well, ones with studied minds and the ability to fairly and openly compare our circumstance versus other systems in the world), is that our leaders are a reflection of "us". This is why we go through the primary season long before engaging in the national election. To very carefully, and methodically, ensure that the people we put forward are "representative of our views". It has always been this way; however, for many election seasons, this aspect of our process has been obscured behind sound-bites, bogus attacks, and slogans.

I, for one, would like to congratulate, and yes, even celebrate the courage the Republican Party has displayed this year by putting forward a candidate, that best represents the salient, and most fundamentally important aspects of what it means to be a true Republican and a conservative. Thank you, I finally get it, though I have long suspected as much.

Based on what you have shown us this election season, I can now fairly conclude that Republicans in general are shallow, back-biting, fear-mongering, uneducated, unsympathetic, self-centered, ego-maniacal, mentally inferior, xenophobic, low intelligence, low moral, guilt-driven, guilt-ridden, non-analytical, incompetent liars and unrepentant scoundrels.

You, as a whole, using Gov. Palin as a mirror into your souls (the gateway to your soul is viewing and analyzing what you select for yourself...I don't expect you to understand), offer the American people nothing in the way of leadership, and by using these tactics of fear, smear, and unintelligible charges of debasing filth, show yourselves to be completely devoid of humanity, replacing same with blind ambition and an uncontrollable lust for power.

We no longer expect YOU to conduct yourselves as decent human beings, let alone as professionals, after so many years of your filthy spew. What you don't understand (and apparently never will), WE the PEOPLE are fed up with your whacko Jesusland trip, designed to humiliate us and enrich yourselves. That is the extent of your vision. McCain blew his chance. The US is still fighting a problem with racism. I believe McCain would have won because of there are still enough people who can't stand the thought of a black man in the oval office. But, that was before Palin. Palin was such a poor choice that she has pushed undecided and moderate republicans to Obama. I think (or did), like many, that McCain would not be a bad pesident. But, Palin scares the hell out of me. The only people who like Palin are the people who are so far right that they would have voted for McCain anyway. In fact they would vote for anyone with an R next to their name. None of us should be picking a pesident soley because of their party.

The vice presidency has been more a target for jokes and ridicule than a sought-after job. George Clinton, who became Thomas Jefferson's Vice President in 1805, called the job a "respectable retirement," after 18 years as Governor of New York. In 1848, Senator Daniel Webster turned down an offer to be Zachary Taylor's vice-presidential running mate, saying, "I do not propose to be buried until I am really dead." And John Nance Garner, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Vice President for his first two terms (1933-41), said the job wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit. (Actually, he used a cruder word than that.) John Adams, the country's first Vice President, famously called it "the most insignificant office." Al Gore described the job as that of "the nation's mourner," as one of his main functions was to attend the funerals of deceased world leaders and dignitaries. The media is making more of it this time because they think it works for Obama by distracting from his own total lack of experience. Problem is, as both H. Clinton and J. Biden pointed out, with Obama, that lack of experience is out of control on day one. Indeed, as Biden stated when addressing Obama's total lack of qualifications, "the Presidency does not lend itself to on the job training." But Palin is not running for the Presidency, and according to Walter Mondale, the VP slot does in fact amount to on the job training. As Mondale, Carter's VP, once notably said when subsequently running for the Presidency, "I learned an awful lot as Vice President that I didn't know as a Senator."

And where was the article about Biden's long standing relationship to the credit card industry, or the stalled credit card reform bill, passed by house but dead in the Senate, where Biden "works."

In our times, we have John McCain choose "Sarah Palin" the veep, I do not know who was more collected, Caligula or John "Fight Bomb Fight" McCain. Now, Sarah would be reminiscent of Nero in Rome, although this time it would be a pitbull with lipstick as she sells herself. I personally consider that an insult to canines. I wouldn't be surprised if she put FBI agents in every bedroom in America, would set up weekly stoning sessions and hangings against the American people, put a bible in our mouths and set up video surveillance systems in our homes. If she does this at home, imagine the stones she will be throwing at the rest of the world: What's next? Let's not just bomb Iran, why not bomb Indonesia, Sudan, hell Russia, 'cause I can see them from my house in Alaska. What happened to this country? Why are so many people so unsure of their own beliefs that they think other peoples' can destroy theirs? Two men getting married doesn't make your marriage any less valid or important; a woman choosing to have an abortion doesn't mean you were wrong to have your child, though forcing a teenager to have a baby that she's not ready for because you refused to help her protect herself against pregnancy IS wrong; a person who doesn't believe that Jesus is coming back any minute to save the un-wicked isn't hurting anything, but a person who lives their life in anticipation of that day often is; and someone who believes that America is a great country with a lot of problems right now doesn't want to blow up America, but someone who believes that America is right in everything that it does without thought or question is setting himself and everyone else up for serious damage. Selfishness, blind patriotism and faith, racism, and a number of other closed-minded, ignorant ideas are what are destroying this country. I will never believe that thinking that everyone should be treated well, treated equally, is something to be shunned and shamed. That is what McCain and Palin's campaign is all about, and I cannot wait for America to tell them, "NO."

Maverick Personality Disorder

Palin may reject complicated scientific definitions.

Despite this, McCain and Palin have managed to make a contribution to the scientific literature.

Before this campaign, the term "maverick" was used loosely, imprecisely.

Now, on the basis of extensive behavioral observations and study, we can firmly say what a "maverick" actually is.

It's a personality disorder:

Maverick Personality Disorder 400.00 (Cluster B)

Maverick Personality Disorder is defined by a tendency to make rash, impulsive decisions that are regarded as both bold and correct--even if the decision directly contradicts another "bold" and "correct" decision that has been made only moments before. This impulsivity is to be distinguished from that seen in Borderline Personality Disorder in that in the latter disorder, self-destructive behavior is overt and intentional, whereas in Maverick Personality Disorder, the impulsive behavior is largely self-destructive, but the individual is rarely aware of it, instead thinking that they are acting "from their gut" in a reasonable fashion.

Sharp mood swings, dramatic gestures, and statements that reflect poor judgment and at times reduced perception of reality (e.g. "the fundamentals of the economy are sound") often occur in the disorder.

A. Three of the following symptoms, displayed in a persistent fashion over a period of 1 year, are necessary for the disorder:

a) Impulsive, rash thoughts and decision-making, often on matters of considerable long-term importance, the impact of which may have major deterimental effects on the individual or others. The impulsive decisions are often justified by such statements as being a "courageous thinker", and by disavowing thought and deliberation as negative characteristics. Notably, despite repeated negative outcomes of this impulsive decision making, the individual still maintains that this behavioral style is correct, and will become testy and irritable when challenged, or when reminded of previous negative outcomes. Ideas that are entirely at odds with each other may be seen concurrently, and such contradictions may be presented by the individual as entirely rational.

2) Dramatic, sweeping, impulsive and grandiose gestures that are meant to change a situation in its entirety, yet are often poorly thought through. The individual may present these acts as gallant and heroic, yet the individual often appears desperate, and provides only a paper-thin rationale for the efficacy of the actions.

3) Extreme mood swings or changes in affect, from apparently happy, to extreme anger and rage. Often these emotions will occur simultaneously, as in the "angry grimacing smile."

4) Binges, sprees or reckless/dangerous behavior without recognizing the potential consequences of such behavior, such as shopping sprees, entering interviews without knowledge of the subject at hand, or naming Vice Presidential candidates without sufficient vetting.

5) "Going Rogue": The tendency to stray from previous professional, social and personal commitments in an effort to protect the self.

6) Dissociative Speech Disturbances: The marked tendency to speak for extensive period of time without any apparent linkage between speech centers and centers of actual thought. The individual may appear entirely confident in what they are saying, speaking at length without pause, without displaying any deliberation, cerebration, contemplation or any other forms of thought whatsoever. With these speech disturbances may occur various accompanying behaviors, such as winking, thumb-raising, etc.

7) Dissociative Changes in Ideation: The individual may disavow major aspects of what they claimed to be the center of their beliefs--e.g., the viability of major tax cuts for the wealthy.

8) Verbal Echolalia: The seemingly uncontrollable repetition of certain words and phrases, even when they appear to have ritualistic meaning or have little or no purpose, remaining utility, or underlying truth. E.g., "My friends", "Socialist", "Joe the Plumber".

B. These behaviors must cause marked impairment in one's professional activities or campaign, and are obsessively maintained even when their destructive impact is clear.

C. These behaviors cannot occur exclusively during a period of Bipolar/Manic Depressive Illness, Major Depression, or political inactivity.

Codes for severity:

MPD Mild 400.01: Mutters to self and wanders grumpily during debate; threatens to attack Russia because it is in view;

MPD Moderate 400.02: Races to "save economy" that he claims is fundamentally sound; Appeals to others as "Average Mom", then wears $150,000 in wardrobe and makeup;

MPD Severe 400.03: Invokes "Joe the Plumber" despite long past sell-by date; Sits down in interview with Katie Couric.

Really and truly, Palin is highly over-rated. Most mothers would offer the same temperament, the same open disposition and the same concern...in having this kind of opportunity.

Now, Ms. Palin thinks she is special. John McCain has reinforced that. In truth, most executive secretaries could and would be able to accomplish what she has accomplished. But she is far from qualified for the responsibilities that may lie waiting when serving as under-study to a man of over 70 years old...a man who wants to find comfort in Arizona and maybe fish a lot.

I for one (a female), am insulted that someone so new and inexperienced would even begin to be compared to (or mentioned in the same paragraph) women who have much more education and knowledge...like Hillary Clinton. But that is where the media has taken this allegedly divine 'average' woman named Palin. She is not qualified, not qualified, not qualified.

People do not care what Obama pays for his clothers for two reasons. First is that he pays for them himself. Secondly, he does not make a big production of being a "common" person. Palin's case is that she is an average "Joe" and that we should vote for her as such. She likes to reinforce her averageness not only be her "common" lifestyle but by her "common" intelligence, which comes across as subcommon. I find it amazing that people would like to be able to say that they are more intelligent than their Vice President.
