Power List: Who is Your Number One?

Kurt Soller

To be honest, I expected some more commentary on our Global Elite List. After putting 50 thought-leaders on our cover that will be molding the world for the foreseeable future, I thought more of you would chime in about who was missing from our list, who we shouldn’t have included in the first place and where we got the idea in the first place.

On the cover essay about the history of power, written by Jon Meacham, there is a bit of that: “Where is Ahmadinejad?” asks one reader. Others complained of “No Rothschilds or Rockefellers,” or our very “thorough investigation” that forgot “Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, and Elmo.” Of course, Elmo. Even more complained about our inclusion of Oprah Winfrey, adding that “Angela Merkel, Gordon Brown and the Clintons are merely hood ornaments.” Someone’s obviously looking to stir up some controversy so, I say, let’s go for it:

Who would you put in your list of the Global Elite? Who do you think is the most influential, most powerful and most insightful when it comes to government, entertainment, economics, academics and any other discipline you deem important?

Leave your choices in the comments below and – as magazines like ours seem to love to do these days – feel free to rank them. Otherwise, I’m going to have to answer questions like this, from one commenter: “How about Tiger Woods and Rachael Ray?”

Whom it May Concern,

I just read the piece by John King of CNN about Lance Inc. Snack Foods (henceforth referred to as Lance).

The article was about their act of buying out Archway Cookies. What I read could well become a part of the blueprint that needs to be followed in order to turn this recession around and begin a recovery.

This act is in particular is a bold illustration of corporate nobility and true patriotism put on display by Lance ). My question is this: Why is this story not broadcast in bold print on your lead page? These kind of stories are what your brain dead editors need to give real prominence to, instead you have a lead story about a loser creep who dresses up as a Santa Claus in order to kill maybe as much as 5 people and himself. Yet again you choose following the easiest journalistic practice of “It it bleeds it leads.” Based no doubt on the flimsy premise of “giving the people what they want”. When in fact more front page stories like the Lance Inc’s story would not only out-perform “if it bleeds it leads” strategy, it would also go a long way to bringing the 4th estate back into to relevance and prominence that it is losing to the crap “infotainment” that currently passes for news., perhaps as a way to motivate more such action on behalf of business and corporations as it would give the those undertaking such actions the kind of righteous press they would so richly deserve.

When the curiously unnamed "private equity firm that bought Archway." Made the buy, shut the bakery down and heartlessly proceeded in trashing the lives of those who depended on Archway for their living. That same “unnamed equity firm” gave no thought to the devastation in lives as a result of its actions. This “unnamed” equity firm displayed concern for nothing other than its next quarterly report’s bottom line. All too often this is the current, shortsighted, greedy, avaricious and chronically-short-sighted American business model in favor in US boardrooms. It would seem this anonymous equity bought Archway so it could liquidate its assets at auction with no regard to those who made their livelihood working there, Lance chose to step up and purchase the company, lock, stock and barrel. This action not only had many positive economic repercussions it also served to protect a cookie brand that my father taught me as a 4-5 year old kid to enjoy as one of the very best cookies made in the USA.

Lance then proceeded to unlock the bakery doors and immediately put 60 of the 300 who had lost their livelihood back to work. Furthermore Lance astonishingly then proceeded to issue debit cards worth $1500.00 in cash to all who had been employed by its former owner Archway. This magnanimous act was not reserved to the 60 workers already rehired by Lance but was extended to all 300 previous and current employees along with a commitment to rehire them all as soon as enough cookie/snack orders had been placed. Affirming in a sense, that "Yes Virginia there is a Santa Clause.“

These jobs and those people who depend on them for their livelihood are sacrificed to the greed of a handful of ownelr/shareholders and “private equity firms” that stand to make a fat profit on the sale and commissions that result in that sale put these men and women’s jobs and workplace on the auction block. Lance has also clearly stated that it wants to bring back the Archway production line and will continue to rehire former employees at the rate new or former cookie orders add to their need for a greater employee pool.

Such outfits like the unnamed firm the so called “private equity firm” that produce  nothing but cash for their shareholders ( didn’t we once call such outfits corporate raiders? ). These leeches are much of what is wrong with our current economy, if not what passes for the "New American" work ideal.

Humbly put, many, if not most "Americans" would  due well to emulate or at least show respect the work ethic and performance of “Rosie the Riveter.” She as least produced something., not only did Rosie take great pride in her vital work, but at the end of the day she could point to physical proof of her efforts. Rosie and many other during that time saw their work as a was to help on a national scale as did those who worked as part of the new deal. These people did their jobs as part of the contribution to make the USA great. This being part of the national work ethic is a big part of what made the USA great.

Lance Inc .has helped set a new/very old standard many US corporations and businesses can aspire to.

In terms of government and politics, I strongly think that you should not deny the strenght of Puspa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), a visionary maoist leader from Nepal, chairman of Communist Party Nepal (Maoist) who is practicing Prachanda Path ( new version of old ideolology of Marx, Lenin and Mao) ,who waged 10 years of bloddy revolution, who leads peaceful  republic of the country from brutal king by throwing 240 years old and strong monarcy and became the first revolutionist prime minister by winning the majority seats in constitution election in a small himalayan country in 2007-2008.
