Inside Obama's Sunshine State Onslaught

Andrew Romano

On Friday, June 13, Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe met with a group of young Hillary Clinton donors at a brewery in Washington, D.C. With the interminable Democratic primary season having just ended, Plouffe had flown all the way from Chicago to convince the Clintonistas, many of whom were still smarting from their candidate's loss, that Obama could win in November--despite their doubts. His pitch? That Obama could pave a path to the presidency through "Virginia, Georgia and several Rocky Mountain states"--a path, in fact, that wouldn't require winning the perennial battleground state where a mere 537 votes decided the 2000 election: Florida.

Turns out he's not quite so dismissive when it comes to cutting checks.

In politics, talk is cheap--but advertising, field offices and voter registrations drives are not. Despite Plouffe's head fake, recent reports on Obama's Florida spending--which easily overwhelms John McCain's--suggest that the Sunshine State remains, at least at this point, the Democratic nominee's top pickoff target for 2008, much as it was for John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000. Going forward, however, the question is whether Obama's massive investment will help him win the 27 electoral votes that both of his predecessors lost--or whether his money would be better spent elsewhere.

Here's the math. Since the start of the general-election season, Obama has dropped $6.51 million--a full 18 percent of his overall ad spending, and by the largest chunk of change allotted to any one state--to broadcast 10,000 commercials on Florida television. McCain's total disbursement? $0, zero ads. Meanwhile, Chicago has sent more than 200 full-time staffers and signed up at least 150,000 online volunteers to man the state's 35 field offices--the most of any battleground. McCain's local staff is a quarter of the size, and much of it is shared with the state party. Obama's goal, says deputy campaign manager Steve Hildebrand, is to register the 630,000 eligible Hispanics, 593,000 African-Americans and 236,000 18- to 24-year-olds not yet on the rolls. With 236,000 new Democrats racked up since January--compared to 126,000 new Republicans--they're well on their way. "We need to expand the electorate," Hildebrand recently told the St. Peterburg Times, "because we know the election is going to be so close."

If Obama can win Florida on Nov. 4--which George W. Bush carried by five points in 2004--he's almost guaranteed to win the White House. But that's a big "if." The state has been trending red in recent years, and McCain--an older, moderate-seeming Vietnam vet--is uniquely suited to appeal to the state's three million seniors and 1.75 military veterans. Also worth noting: Dems may have outregistered Republicans by more than 60,000 votes in 2004, but the state's well-oiled GOP machine turned out 75 percent of its new supporters that year to John Kerry & Co.'s 66 percent; McCain, who has quietly opened a not-insignificant 25 field offices in Florida--more than twice as many as the next closest state--will benefit from the same GOTV operation.

Which is why the whizzes at FiveThirtyEight.com, who use a complex statistical model of recent polling, past results and demographic data to predict Election Day outcomes, currently give the Republican nominee a 73 percent chance of winning. It may also be why Obama still lags behind his Republican rival in RealClear Politics' average of the four most recent surveys--despite his aggressive post-primary spending and McCain's relative invisibility. True, Obama has managed to narrow the gap to a slender 1.2 percent. But that's nearly identical to the polling in mid-June--which suggests that Obama's improved performance (he trailed McCain by 15 points in Florida as recently as April) has less to do with his advertising onslaught than with the Democratic Party waiting until after Hillary Clinton had exited stage left to coalesce around its nominee. Given the size and scope of his investment, I suspect that the Illinois senator is seeking something more satisfying than a close second. As Republican strategist John Sowinski of Orlando told the Wall Street Journal this morning, "they are coming in early when it's cheaper to be on TV, and they are determining if it will be worth it to push things in Florida later on." If Obama can't move the needle more by the time McCain ramps up his Sunshine State spending--which will likely start around Labor Day--I suspect that Chicago will direct at least some of its dinero elsewhere (as Plouffe initially suggested he'd do).

Apparently, Ohio is lovely in the autumn...

Ah, the man with the broken cap lock.  I've seen this one floating around online.  I tried to find the origin so I could respond to it directly, but all I could find were a few forums where someone copied and posted it for others to see.  If anybody knows where this came from or who this farm boy (or, more likely, Republican smear machine) is, I'd LOVE to send him a copy.  Until then, I'll content myself to post this reply in any forum I find it.  Enjoy!

// skipping to the hard part......

SOMEHOW, SUDDENLY - HE WENT TO THE BEST HIGH DOLLAR PREP SCHOOLS IN AMERICA , AND LATER, HE GOT INTO A TOP IVY LEAGUE COLLEGE AND LATER, INTO HARVARD LAW SCHOOL - HOW? WHO SPONSORED HIM? WHO PAID FOR ALL THAT SCHOOLING? (HAVE YOU LOOKED AT TUITION EXPENSES TO ATTEND UNDERGRADUATE YALE LATELY? HOW ABOUT HARVARD LAW SCHOOL ? SOMEBODY PAID A LOT OF BUCKS FOR THIS KID'S IVY LEAGUE EDUCATION.......) WHO?

He did - through scholarships and student loans.

A SENATOR'S SALARY IS NOT THAT GREAT, BUT THIS YOUNG MAN AND HIS YOUNG WIFE PRESENTLY LIVE IN A $1.4 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE THAT HE ACQUIRED THROUGH A "DEAL" WITH A WEALTHY FUND RAISER.

WHAT SORT OF "DEAL"?

I hadn't heard about this, so I had to do some research on this one.  I read a few articles and here's what I found:  The "deal" probably refers to Antoin Rezko (wealthy fundraiser) purchasing the lot adjoining the Obama's house.  The seller was only interested in selling both lots together, so Rezko bought the lot the Obama's weren't interested in.  It seems legit; nobody gave money to Obama for it, or bought it for him.  But for the sake of full disclosure, I should pass along that Rezko seems to be a pretty shady character.  He is being prosecuted (or was prosecuted??..the articles are from early '08 and I'm not sure of any outcome) on charges of corruption for "shaking companies for kickbacks"  Links to a couple of the articles I found are below.

RIGHT OUT OF HARVARD LAW, HE "WORKED" AS A CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST IN CHICAGO.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!         "Worked."        HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Ohhhh, that is rich....  That is hilarious.........civil rights "work."  What'd he do?  Employ teams of destitute schmoes to pull him around in his gold carriage on the way to another Civil Rights ball???  Am I right?  Am I right??  High five, Cletus!  You sure put that lazy a**hole in his place!!!  Finally, someone has the guts - no...the balls - to go after Big Charity.  Those social workers and outreach programs have been riding that sweet gravy train waaaaaay too long.

HE THEN ENTERED POLITICS AT THE STATE LEVEL AND THEN MOVED TO THE NATIONAL LEVEL - WHERE HE SCRAMBLES TODAY WITH VERY MINIMAL EXPERIENCE IN ANYTHING - WHILE OTHER PEOPLE WRITE HIS SPEECHES FOR HIM.

IN ALL HIS TIME IN THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEGISLATURES - HE'S NEVER LAUNCHED ANY IMPORTANT LEGISLATION WHATSOEVER MOSTLY, HE'S OUT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

Ok, I admit, like a lot of Americans, I didn't even know there wasan Obama before he entered the race.  I knew nothing about him, and I was confident Hillary would be a good president; so I voted for her in the Texas primary.  Shortly thereafter I started to become disenfranchised with the way Clinton was running her campaign, so I began reading up on Obama.  She would have been great.  So will he.  I can't sit here and recite legislation (the C-SPAN stuff is soooo boring) but I can pass a few points of interest.

He did some work in foreign affairs - joining several foreign relations committees.  He went on a few world wide travel spree; focusing on speaking with world leaders about strategies to keep the world's supply of weapons from being leaked to terrorist groups.  He also worked to quell ethnic violence in Africa.  He supposedly gave a powerful speech on political corruption at a university in Kenya that people nation wide went gaga for there, but I've haven't been able to find any clips on it.

He also focused on combating political corruption back here in the States.  I know he sponsored bills to tighten up criminalization of fraudulent campaign practices in federal elections.  He also sponsored that famous bill that Bush vetoed that would have provided extended health care for injured soldiers returning home and their families.

That's about all I got.

.....

I did a bit of quick digging and thought I'd post some links I found.  Know that the last one is from Barack's campaign website; I knew it'd be biased, but I figured it also be thourough.  Feel free to look elswhere - JUST LOOK!!

HE CLAIMS TO BE "PROUD OF HIS AFRICAN HERITAGE" BUT IT SEEMS THAT HIS ONLY CONNECTION WITH AFRICA WAS THAT HIS AFRICAN FATHER GOT A WHITE GIRL PREGNANT AND THEN DESERTED HER.

UMMM....WHERE IS THE PRIDE IN HIS WHITE HERITAGE? AFTER ALL - IT WAS WHITE GRANDPARENTS THAT RAISED HIM!

Is that a serious question?  Where's his whitey pride?  Obama has shown nothing but complete pride in all facets of his heritage - period - none more or less than the other.  He speaks about his mother and loving grandparents who raised him often.  No connection with Africa?  Was he stripped of his black points upon leaving the continent?  What exactly is it you're fishing for, here?  Need him to dress up in half black / half white face makeup??  Maybe NOT sink a b-ball once in a while??  His message has never been race specific.  It's a call for all minorities - all Americans - to be treated as equals.  And if it seems like there is an emphasis in the media on the darker side of his genetic structure ...... newsflash: AMERICA IS ABOUT TO ELECT IT'S FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!!!  You bet your ass people are excited!  It's energizing for people to see a minority reach up to the highest office in the country!  It's a sign that times are changing; that people are leaving old hatreds behind!

HE IS PRESENTLY A MEMBER (FOR OVER 20 YEARS!) OF AN "AFROCENTRIC" CHURCH IN CHICAGO THAT HATES WHITES, HATES JEWS, AND BLAMES AMERICA FOR ALL THE WORLD'S FAULTS.

HE REPEATEDLY COVERED UP FOR THAT PASTOR AND THAT CHURCH - SAYING THAT HE CAN SEPARATE THE RELIGION FROM THE POLITICS, WHEN HE HEARS A HATE-WHITEY SERMON.

HE CLAIMED THAT HE WAS SIMPLY UNABLE TO CONFRONT HIS PASTOR OF 20+ YEARS ABOUT THE PASTOR'S DEMONSTRATED UN-AMERICAN BIAS, BUT HE WANTS US TO BELIEVE THAT HE CAN CONFRONT NORTH KOREA AND IRAN , WHEN THE TIME ARISES TO TAKE AMERICA 'S SIDE.

First off, I'm pretty sure it was Obama that won the Democratic nomination - not Jeremiah Wright.  Turns out, they actually ARE two different people complete with their own minds and views - and not the conjoined twins we've been led to believe (joined at the dogma.)  Let a man's actions speak for his character.  Barack Obama has repeatedly shown nothing but passion and commitment to making this a better country - a better world to live in.  Do you honestly think he would spend his life fighting to improve a country he hates?  Unless.......HE'S GOING TO TAKE US DOWN FROM THE INSIDE!!!!  He'll sell us off to African diamond lords as slaves!!  Blacks are taking their revenge!!

"You're name's not Toby!  It's Kunta Kinte!!  *wh-whip*

I've never been to this church; never heard more than those few sound bites of Wrights' sermons - and neither have you.  I'm not in a position to defend or debunk this man.  But I can say this:  if he's truly as fed up and angry with this government as everybody makes him out to be? ........ I get it.  He may be a bit out there, but I,  **evil Muslim fist bump**  totally get it.  I look at all the crap this administration pulls - at Americans' astounding propensity to justify and accept it - and I feel like freaking out!!

"But his pastor said all these crazy, hateful things about America!  Why didn't he kill him right there with his flag pin?  HMMMMMMM????"

I don't know....... maybe because...... THIS IS AMERICA!!!!  A country built on the principle that when your government pisses you off you have the right to freely lift up your voice in opposition!!!

Look, obviously I'm a full blown - rape the oil execs and feed 'em to the baby seals - Democrat.  My comments are undeniably biased and riddled with sarcasm and jokes - I've always loved pushing buttons.  But, I'd like to give a shot at ending this on a more serious note.  Unfortunately,  the very nature of political campaigns such as these has been obfuscation and slander - on both sides.  Each side is going to go through exhaustive lengths to plant fear and doubt about their opponent - like with letters such as these.  Do you really think a farm boy without an education has a wide enough networking base for his rants to go viral like this?  I doubt a man not computer savvy enough to turn off a cap lock has a huge blog readership or hundreds of MySpace friends.  This is obviously just a smear tactic sent out by McCain's campaign meant to manipulate the masses; build on your doubts without producing any facts.  This IS America; we all have the right to vote for whoever we choose.  But with that freedom to choose comes the responsibility to make it a truly informed one.  You cannot simply trust your candidate to tell you all you need to know!!  And you surely can't take the word of some unknown stranger whose mysterious, unsigned email pops into your inbox.  When buying a house, do you just take the selling realitor's word on it's condition and fork over the cash?  Hell no, you get your a$$ in there and root around - maybe even hire someone to check out the wiring and the plumbing!  If an opponent says something unfavorable about your candidate, don't just scoff and assume that he's wrong - prove him wrong!!  We live in a pretty amazing time; an age where litterally a world of information is at our fingertips and accessible within minutes!  Use it!  Mainstream media seems to be getting more and more biased, so look to several sources and find the truths that persist across the spectrum.  The consequences of this decision are two big not to.  No less than the future of every person in America - if not the world - hangs in the balance.

I'M just farm boy - if this guy really does exist, he needs a better excuse.

Pugs - Hillary and McCain are opposites while Hillary and Obama have very similar views on just about issue.  When someone says that they supported Hillary, but now they support McCain I can't help, but think that they are either are oblivious to the facts or the just can't see themselves voting for someone that's not white.

I'm sorry, I don't usually go after people on these websites because I'm probably not going to change your mind, but I can't let you get away with this without calling you on it.  What you are doing makes no sense.  What attracted you to Hillary in the first place?  The only things she has in common with McCain are they are both voted for the war in Iraq, and they are rich, white and have been in Washington for a long time.

I'm also in Florida so our votes would cancel each other out, but knowing that I'm working hard as hell to register hundreds of new voters and getting them out to vote.  I've been an Obama supporter from about Iowa, but if he lost to Hillary I know there is no way in the world that I would have picked McCain over Hillary.  That is just plain insane.

I am a Flordian and an Ex Hillary fan and McCain has my vote.  Not because I am mad but I simply think he will do a better job with the country period than Obama. I did not trust Obama to have the experience to lead us and his forums, debates and speeches have not convinced me of the opposite.
