How's Palin Playing in Alaska? Well, Funny You Should Ask ...

Karen Breslau

ANCHORAGE, Alaska--Here at the Peanut Farm restaurant in Anchorage they are eating up Sarah Palin's words with more gusto than the huge steaks they sling.

When they cut away to a shot of little Piper, Palin's 6-year-old, stroking the head of her napping baby brother Trig, people here laughed so hard, the guy at the bar next to me wheezed in his burrito and started crying. That's when Palin was talking about the political power of PTA presidents.

The crowd here at the bar, including her sister Heather, who is in the custody of a CNN crew, are riveted. When she makes a crack about the only difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom being lipstick (same joke she told me a year ago) some women at the bar nodded in agreement. "It's the truth!" another howled.

Having spent much time covering Palin over the past year, she seemed like the longest of long shots. Tonight, though, she's all pitch-perfect timing and delivery. A populist star is born.

UPDATE, 11:13 p.m.: The Peanut Farm has erupted with shouts of "Sarah, Sarah, Sarah!!!" as Palin raises her arms in triumph and her family fills the stage. They're gonna be talking about this one for a long time here. The rapture over Palin, with McCain standing awkwardly by, reminds me of the first time Prince Charles took Lady Di for a walkabout.

UPDATE, 11:16 p.m.: Here at the Peanut Farm my fellow diners are putting their hands over their hearts and singing along with the National Anthem.

McCain further showed his bad judgment by selecting Palin. People should stop and think about what a disaster it would be if she suddenly became president she wouldn't have a clue.some people rave about her speech which was written by rightwing republican writers she had no say as to it's contents any 44 year old with normal intelligence after being coached like Palin was should be able to read a speech so what's the big deal ?how about Hillary or Bill who use veey few notes and give great speeches? that shows how smart a person is. what Palin is- -is scary that Holy Roller have the kid no matter if its rape or incest may work in a small population  state like Alaska but to  the million's of brilliant women especially the Hillary supporters it will look like the BS it is.Palin is a country girl come to the city and her lack of experience will be showing brightly in the near future.I'm an Independent who doesn't like McCain or Obama but can see what a total disaster Plain would be.

Sarah sucks....how can someone who is so anit-abortion go out and mame and kill animals....oh yeah she is a real softy alright.

I think its also hilarious that for someone who is so against sex education ...her OWN DAUGHTER got pregnant at 17. So much for abistinence.....news flash it doesn't work.

Welcome to the 21st centruy GOP .....just because you may not belive in God or are not pro - miltary does not mean you dont love your country. The GOP loves using scare tactics.

To tiredoflies:

Isn't it about time for you to get back to the home and take your meds?

Your explanation of Obama's "clinging" remark was the biggest pile of BS I've seen since I left the farm.  Funny that he never tried to explain it away like that.

And mjjmjj, you complain about a 17-yr old getting pregnant out of wedlock;  Are you talking about Palin's daughter, or Obama's mother?

And for those of you upset that she attacked your darling Obama, are you aware that he spent the entire weekend attacking her, ridiculing her as just being a small-town mayor, never mentioning that she is currently a governor, and making fun of her hometown, calling it "Wasilly" instead of "Wasilla"?  Did you know that he and Biden were making fun of how she got started in the PTA?

Probably not.  I imagine you people watch MSNBC, NBC, or CBS (not that the others are too much better, but these three are the lowest of the low in terms of prejudicial coverage), in which case you would not have been aware of the negative campaigning of your dream team (let's see:  a Presidential candidate with a resume so thin he types it on onionskin paper; and a VP candidate who is supposed to be ready to be President on day 1, and yet the Democratic voters overwhelming stated that they did not want him as President.  Who got fewer votes, Biden or Kucinich?).

Whatever.  We'll see come November who the American people put their faith with.
