Everybody Loves Palin!

Andrew Romano

Amount raised by the John McCain campaign in the two-and-a-half days after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin joined the ticket: $10 million.

Amount raised by the Barack Obama campaign in the 24 hours after Palin delivered her speech at the 2008 Republican Convention: $10 million.

Uniting both parties' bases in one fell swoop (or, er, woman): Priceless.

Although, it must be noted: Obama's post-Palin fundraising rate ($416,666 per hour) is more than twice as fast as McCain's ($166,666 per hour). Talk about reaching across the aisle.

Kim Murphy’s “Palin Gives and Saves amid Big Alaska Surplus”which appeared in the Los Angeles Times (September 5) Tells it all. Each year Palin gives every Alaskan resident  $2,000 to $ 2,500 a year from oil royalties. In addition, Palin gave out a $ 1,200 energy rebate.

Palin really reminds me of presidential candidate George McGovern who pledged to give every American a guaranteed minimum income. Or Palin represents  modern version of the welfare queen with the Cadiallac who popped off another child every one or two years to get more welfare money. Allthough Alaska has a massive surplus, Palin spent much of her time as mayor and governor lobbying for government handouts, stopping this practice only recently when she got the VP nomination.

Perhaps the people of Alaska need help to make ends meet. I can buy that, but as a recently retired teacher who spent a life time teaching in inner city schools, the residents of south Los Angeles need help too. And, Palin looks at the urban poor with contempt and disgust. The urban poor, the black and the brown, can just pull themselves up by their own boot staps, even if they can’t afford a pair of shoes, let alone boots.

And who’s paying for Alaska’s handouts?

We are - namely everyone in the lower 49.

Every time we fill our gas tank, some of the price we pay goes to the slick Exxon advertisements we see on CNN. Millions of dollars go to oil lobbyists. And if fact, though McCain claims he’s for the people, that didn’t stop him from accepting $ 1,000,000 in campaign contributions from oil companies last June - and that’s only the start.

No wonder Palin hates Obama. . Obama wants to free the United States from the tyranny of oil He pledges to decarbonize our economy within 10 years. If oil companies shut down, what will happen to the Republican party. What will happen to the oil company dividends Alaskans get.

The Los Angeles Times article provs  once again that we need a change we can believe in. Not the imaginary 10% change that McCain promises - but a bold stroke for renewable energy that is the cornerstone of Obama’s energy policies.
