Opportunity Knocks...

Andrew Romano

Hot on the heels of John McCain's request to postpone Friday's inaugural presidential debate comes this press release from Bob Barr, who says he's " more than willing to step in to participate" in McCain's absence.

How generous.

In case you're wondering, Bob Barr is running for president. As a Libertarian. Who is Bob Barr? you ask. A former Republican congressman from Georgia who led the impeachment efforts against President Bill Clinton, he's probably most famous nowadays for appearing in the Borat movie to accept a block of cheese made from Borat's wife's breast milk. That's right: the little guy with the mustache and glasses who bears an unsettling resemblance to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr.

Take it away, Bob. Your 15 minutes seconds begin... now:

With the recent proposal of Senator John McCain to postpone the first presidential debate, it is clear that the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) has no authority.

"For the past several elections, candidates have used the CPD as an official buffer to keep competition out of the two-party presidential contest," says Libertarian Party presidential nominee Bob Barr. "McCain publicly proved with his announcement what we've been saying all along: The candidates call the shots as to when to debate, where to debate and who to debate."

Barr continued, "Given Senator McCain's political stunt to avoid the debate, I ask that Friday's debate moves forward without him, as I am more than willing to step in to participate."

A valiant effort, but something tells me that Obama's not going to bite. Although it is worth noting--as Barr does later in the release--that Jimmy Carter skipped first debate of 1980, forcing Ronald Reagan to battle independent challenger John Anderson all by his lonesome. Of course, Anderson was polling around 20 percent at the time; Barr's currently pulling a paltry 1 percent or so. That said, Reagan did go on to win the election. So maybe Obama should reconsider--provided Barr leaves the breast-milk cheese at home.

UPDATE, 10:26 p.m.: The New Republic's Michael Schaffer makes the case for Barr:

Isn't this sort of a gimme for the Democrats? If Barack Obama really wants John McCain to de-suspend his participation, he ought to vow not only to invite Barr to fill the empty podium, but should promise to spend as much of the debate as possible teeing up his mustachioed interlocutor to deliver great zingers. By weekend, Barr could be at 20 percent in the polls and Obama could be on his way to a decisive win.

Sounds downright McCainian...

Attention: Have you seen John McCain on his own, in his Element [Town Hall] Fullof Gaffes and Missteps and you you think...

During "Suspension" [McCain Grandstands], Advisers Attack

When John McCain announced yesterday that he was suspending his campaign to help everyone solve the economy, and inviting Barack Obama to do the same, I must admit -- at first, I tried to think unconventionally, and I allowed myself to consider whether McCain's gesture, while almost certainly quixotic, might be sincere. Of course, soon after, I peeped the tick-tock, and learned that it originated with Obama encouraging a joint statement on the matter. For his trouble, Obama and his campaign basically got blindsided by this "suspension" maneuver. This is apparent on its face, and really should quash any suspicion that McCain's decision to suspend his campaign and inject himself into the bailout proceedings was some sort of "Country First," non-political gesture.

Of course, another clear sign that this campaign suspension is pure bunk is the fact that no suspending of the campaign has actually occurred! As documented on last night's Late Show With David Letterman, McCain's hasty exit didn't find the candidate beating a path to the halls of power, to lay hands on the nation's economy. His next stop was to sit down with Katie Couric, after which, he went...nowhere? You know, despite all the danger the country was in. Today, his surrogates have been out on teevee, in clear contravention of the suspension order. Nicolle Wallace and Tucker Bounds both appeared on MSNBC, sandwiching themselves around a campaign appearance McCain made himself at the Clinton Global Initiative. Meanwhile, at 10:00 am this morning, the actual leaders on this matter began their actual work on the bailout package. It's fair to say that they've already outpaced all of McCain's contributions on the bailout matter, even if we include the lovely set of talking points his campaign drew up for campaign volunteers to use in discussion -- you know, the campaign volunteers whose activities are supposed to have been, uhm...suspended.

But McCain is an honorable man, after all, and he is, at some point, coming to Washington, at President Bush's behest, not in pursuit of personal ambition, but of Solutions for America, right? Right? At AMERICAblog, Joe Sudbay notes that today's schedule of events casts doubt on this contention:

At 4:00 p.m., (ABC News reported via email) George Bush, whose approval rating on the economy is at 16% with a 76% disapproval, will be hosting the White House photo-op (that's what Barney Frank is calling it). John McCain will be there for that session.

Let's be clear: McCain will miss the meeting about substance. But, McCain will be there for the Grandstanding.

Where, exactly, is this suspension

-------------------------

The Senate cannot Vote on this [Bailout] until Saturday and Most of the Bi-Partisan Group Directly Involved have made or Ironing out the Particulars....fact.

The Bi-Partisan [Republicans-Democrats] say that there is not time for Political granstanding, which is what McCain is in fact...Doing

They say next week maybe they will do some Political Granstanding of their own, but as of now, this crisis is Too Big, to lend itself, to John McCain's political Photo Ops and Grandstanding.

I Agree

John McCain is the Woorst Kind of Representative of Bi-Partisanship, more over, being the Next [President of the USA]

Especially when he has such a Dim Witted Vice President, [Palin] waiting for him to have a Stroke, Heart Attack or Terminal cancer Bout, within the Next 2 Years !!!

You Mccain Lovers are Pathetic and Pitiful, to waste your Time on such a Meaningless Republican Ticket as McCain-Palin

-----------------------------

This is John McCain at his very Worst, which is actually his Most Apparent !!!
