By every measurable factor, Hillary is losing and has virtually no chance of turning things around. Now her money is drying up. With every passing week, the money issue will become more dire. She'll hang in to the bitter end in the hope of a miracle, but for all intents & purposes she doesn't stand a chance. Obama would have to do something tantamount to political suicide, and he's not going to.

I wish that you would have spoken more to the real significance of these differences in donations. The fact that 1.3 million ordinary people are willing to back Obama with what little cash we have on hand in today's economy is a fantastic bit of news concerning a new era for our democracy! Could it be that the time of the fat cats and the lobbyists having far far far too much sway in our politics, is coming to an end? Could the internet finally be the mass communication system that television has failed to be (because the fat cats own it) ? Could it be that because of the internet, we may actually end up with a democracy, not the appearance of one, after all? It looks to me like it took well over two hundred years for a mass communication tool to come along that allows the visions of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, etc., to become possible. The people have been trying for a long time to have their voices heard above the voices of the rich and privileged. To me, that is the real story here, and it is incredibly exciting.

Hillary still has more money to spend than any Republican. Obama still has Obamamania. They are both doing well in fundraising MORE than any democrats before! I waited to contribute because of all the hype about her dropping out of the race. After she made her statement to stay in, I didn't have a problem donating again. It is all a ploy. I personally don't like seeing ANY politicial commercial ran over and over again....they get annoying. (they say Obama will pelt 5 for every one of Hillary's in PA)

It may be illegal but money will come.Nothing except a rejection by the Super Delegates will cause Hillary Clinton to drop out.Too many powerful Interests have invested in her campaign and require their Pay Back when she and Bill are in the White House. It is sad that Hillary is taking money from people when they've taken a $100,000,000 donation for Bill's library after he schmoozed a dictator to get a contract for the donor. You can be certain this is why they don't want people to see their income statement, and what they do release won't have the Library funds they're hiding. Hillary is tied to corporations like Bush and will stay around to the end unless Pennsylvanians step up and put us out of the misery of another republican president.

Thanks for the great insight into Clinton's money issues...just another example of her "Commander in Chief" abilities....leave $8.7 million in old unpaid bills with only $3 million in the bank.

My hope Newsweek, is that, with your help, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Elections Commisions will step in and force her to pay her debts before the cash inflows dwindle, which they will. She should be made by the party or the FEC to fully pay her debts before she buys another ad, or eats another catered meal.

What a travesty to see someone run for President who doesn't have the decency to pay her own constituents and supporters who, trusting her, provided services months ago, Or care enough about her employees to pay overdue health premiums for her workers....Wow, what a sorry example if integrity and credibility... and what a poor reflection on the Party.

People of Pennsylvania for Clinton, maybe you ought to take another look at who/what you are supporting. Is this who you want in the White House? hey eddiewhere....the republicans have money that they dont have to give yet... Our primary is over. When the call for money comes people will not be tapped out. Floods of cash to take on Obama. Watch and listen to some 'non american' video. When someone talks about raping your wife and daughter cause they are guilty in they eyes of islam, ask how that fits in with the '60 day exit plan'.

free speech is great until someone says they are gonna kill your family. free speech is great until someone talks bad about your wife, daughter, family.

If you want to ignore it , you may. But if , or when it happens, will you be the one that steps up and says " oops I was wrong and this is my fault?" I doubt it.

It is obscene for candidates for president to spend the kind of money that they all have in order to just get the nomination. The amount of money raised in just Feb. and March could have been put to much better use to help ease some of the financial problems that some people are having.

I think that all candidates, democrats and republicans should have one ad per week on chanels during the national news timeslot. The tv nevworks would be given a small payment. For example this week each candidate would have 1 ad each shown during the last 7 minutes of a newscast where they usually have fluff stories anyway.

This would probably increase the ratings of news slots and would limit the amount of money that is wasted on primary elections.

40 million for Obama and 20 million for the month of March might be a small amount in the whole budget of a national corporation, but just think of the good it could do for the economy if it was put in the hands of ordinary people to spend on goods and services and would help improve the economic outlook even if it might be small. There will be even more spent in the general election.

We need campaign reform now at all levels not just the national level. People are raising and spending billions of dollars during each election cycle, sometimes speending 20 times as much as the salary of the post they are seeking. If this were paid into the states treasureys then this money could be put to good use.

If candidates spend this much money to get elected, how do we expect them to handle the budgets in a responsible manner?

Obama is spending 2 or 3 times as much money as Clinton, but he has a slight lead. The lead would probably be the same if they had spent the amount of money raised in Feb. for the whole primary.

Stump speeches are great, but unscripted question and answer and debates are a much better way to judge a candidate because speech writing and delivery only give a voter a very limited view of the candidate and their plans.

Reform now!

A person of PR heritage informed me that it is stupid to assume that PR will fall to Hillary. The opinion was that PR is European and African, not native and they think for themselves. In fact, it is likely to anger the people of PR that they are being compared with mainland hispanics by the media so there may be a backlash.

It is a pity that half of the society/ the female gender are not forthcoming with their financial support to the first lady candidate for the white house. It does look strange to me. Further as afro american community is voting en block for Mr. Obama then they also must be donating en block to Mr. Obama. It is an irony that an woman has at last in the entire history of the presidential election of USA surfaced to become possibly the first woman president but where are the women who constiturte half of the society to support this woman candidate. I diesagree with the lack of numbers this man put forth. As is known, he is anti-Clinton, so his bias may be in the way.

I am one of thousands of new donors to Hillary Rodham Clinton for President. I don't have much money, as I am a student and a single mom (some men are not interested in supporting their children, but society doesn't care about issues affecting women--but that is another matter). Yet I was able to reach down in my budget and "find" $210 dollars for Hillary... I gave up pizza, a pair of jeans, a refund from my insurance company, reduced my online movie subscription, took the bus and saved my gas $$, and look what I was able to do!

I think this man is wrong and if he were to ask Hillary supporters, we came through with millions collectively. It wasn't just "big-time donors". Give us a chance and we will send you our testimonials.

And, do some more research into Obama's contributors. I wonder how he could have so many from his pool of supporters (students?, blacks?). I know for a fact that students don't donate and have no money-- only a small fraction of us are doing this. And, for a lot of the non-moneyed people, how many are on food stamps, and recieving HUD?? If they are able to give it away, maybe they should get 2 or 3 jobs like I have.

Happyday41. Your loyalty to Hillary is noble, to say the least. Your digging down to come-up with $210 is a wonderful story. I will try to be fair in my comments. I do not profess to have all the answers and I certainly try to be humble in my assessments. I do find it interesting that Obama has been much more successful in raising money and managing money as well. Managing a campaign is certainly a way to gauge the way a candidate will manage, staffs, monetary issues and a country. I only mention this because Hillary does say that she is superior in every facet of her credibility to be president over Mr. Obama.

One question that I would like to ask of any Hillary supporter is : "just how transparant is Ms. Clinton.?" She refuses to release tax records and has been very vague on contributions to her campaigns as they relate to the Peter Paul affair in 2000. These cases come to mind and are certainly only the tip of the iceberg as far as Hillary's blind ambition in politics is concerned. My referring to them is an effort to point out potential pratfalls in her candidicy moving forword. I sincerely would not like to see your $210 misspent if there is a October or November suprise. Further, I would like to ask one other question... Why should I want to revist the scandals of the first Clinton presidency in light of this lack of transparancy and why should I have to tell my daughters what relationship that Monica played in this administration like it did in 1995. I mean this administration's almost sophmoric and flip behaviour led to some pretty nasty stuff that were being told now "is none of our business." The blue dress is my business when it happens in our Whitehouse. It is my business when I have to explain to my 8 and 9 year olds, what their classmates are talking about at school. Why do I want to vote for anymore of this ilicit and dishonest behavior? Please respond....

Hillary raised 20 million in Mar. Obama rasied 40 million. From the record that he need to outspend her 3-1,4-1, or even 5-1 in TX/OH/RI just to come close. Seems like it's Obama who is behind in funding. He will need at least 3-1 or 4-1 funding ability for the upcoming primary.

I'm not sure what you folks are thinking, but the extreme negativities that I've been experiencing from Obama supporters are what really driving me, and many people with average income to continue to contribute our money. I'm a new donor to Hillary, and never once in my life had ever make donations in an election before.

I'm a UMASS student from Boston...still young and broke with money, but looking to make this April the best month for Hillary.

I'm a videogame fanatic, and I remember being a big fan of Microsoft Xbox and how much I hate the childish behavior of Sony (Playstation) fanboys. Even though there was some hating going on between us fanboys, BUT NEVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE HAD I EVEN SEEN SUCH HATRED AND NEGATIVITIES IN OBAMA FAN GROUPS.

Now putting that aside, please have some respect...it might do you some good.

It's not an awful article. It is financially, if you paid attentions to the types of financing strategies each camp is running, logical. It also points to a total lack of Clinton ever thinking she would have to run past February, thus tapping out all her donor base with the max of $2300 early on to clobber any challengers on Super Tuesday. Obama, on the other hand, has donors giving $25, $50, $60 and they can do it each paycheck, ensuring that he will have a steady flow of cash, without his donor base even coming close to the $2300 cap. It's like winning the lottery. Do you take the lump sum payment and squander it right away, or do you take the yearly payments ensuring you will have a stream of income for years to come. If Clinton can't manage financial planning for her own campaign, it begs the question: How will she manage a flailing economy? By basically promising to dump a ton of money we don't have into jobs that she promised New Yorkers and never delivered on. Good luck with that prospect.

It's interesting to watch the Clinton team maneuver. Yesterday Team Clinton says no number until April 20th. Obama's team releases his information. Comments begin to spring up suggesting that things must be pretty bleak for Team Clinton if they are going to delay the announcement. Within a few hours there's a report that Team Clinton has come in with a semi-respectable number that is half of what Team Obama took in. That largely puts the kabosh on the speculation that was htting on the news of campaign debts and so on. In a conference call today that number is NOT confirmed.

I suspect your analysis of their dire straits is exactly right. The media may not have played up the campaign debt angle (which, IMO, would have hurt her badly -- the champion of the working class is stiffing working class Joe vendors), but the SDs have to be following this story, and they know what it means. Meanwhile, it looks like they are doing their best to delay the impact of this story -- presumably to give themselves breathing room to get a game-changing result in PA or for some other shoe to drop. They probably figure that the delayed announcement of bad news won't have a big impact 4/20 because it will (a) be old news and (b) lost in the frenzy in the run up to the first actual vote in 6 weeks.

During the recent media super storm: Obama’s Pastor Disaster, CBS 2 Chicago has strangely not released video they have of Obama at Trinity United Church of Christ for a Book Signing / Church Service with Pastor Wright. According to a Chicago Tribune article, at the Service Obama spoke to the cheering congregation and the choir sang, “Hallelujah Barack”. After the service Wright and Obama sat together, laughing , talking and signing books. Her (and Bill's) attitude of entitlement is shameful. In the wake of her husband's (and hers by association) numerous scandals, and her own ability to LIE easily (Bosnia), I have lost complete faith in her as a person and as a presidential candidate. Andrew, after reading your breathless and giddy article about how fantastic Obama's fonts and layouts are on his campaign posters, I think its pretty clear who's been dipping into the Obama Kool Aid. So I'm not surprised that you're just as breathless in racing to your keyboard to express your ardent hope that the democratic process is thwarted by Clinton running out of money.

But in your haste to bang out another pro-Obama article, you forgot to talk out of only one side of your mouth at a time. At first you say March looks terribly "bleak" and "dire" for Clinton's fundraising, and then mention she had her second best month ever in March by raising $20 million dollars. That's more money in 1 month than any other candidate has raised EVER except for Obama, who takes tithes daily at the Church of Obama from his googly eyed, fatuous followers.

So, given that pesky little fact of her $20 million fundraising month, I don't think your prayers to Saint Obama will quite be answered yet. In the meantime, its must be very hard to keep guzzling that Kool Aid while you're talking out of both sides of your mouth. Makes kind of a mess, don’t you think? And you’ll find later that Kool Aid is, and always has been, just empty calories.

well no matter what, there is a break even cross over point on the pledged delegate count, not include Supers who will stand by awaiting to cast their political fortune with a winner. The math is not in Hillary's favor, no matter which formula or excel magic that will change it. Once this number is reached, she can't catch him. Supers then can choose and that's when she'll loose.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. I have two issues with your post, though: 1) My article on Obama's "branding" was, in fact, an interview with Michael Bierut, a leading graphic designer, in which he evaluated Obama's logos and font as a design professional. While he thought they were well-executed, in design terms, it certainly doesn't follow that either he (or I) are therefore "breathless and giddy" about Obama's politics. In fact, one could easily argue that the Obama campaign's emphasis on design is another example of "style over substance," a frequent criticism. 2) $20 million is indeed a impressive number. My skepticism was not, however, about Clinton's total take, but with how much of it is available for use in the primary. Last month, her tally was massive--$35 million. But two-thirds of that could only be used IF she made it to the general election. For now, those funds are theoretical. They won't help her beat Obama. And if this month conforms to last month's pattern, only $7 million of that $20 million is available now. That's less than her outstanding debt--which is a problem. It might be more, it might be less. But there's very little chance, as I explain in the article, that Clinton isn't burning through every cent that comes in. She may even be in the red--and that could cause problems later on.

15R8. Thank you for your nice comments about Senator Obama. I am with you all the way, in that Senaator Obama's feet have been held to the fire long enough. But I do have to ask, why do you have to hold him accountable. The words were spoken by the Reverand and NOT by Senator Obama. Are you accountable for what your family says and does because you lived with them for so many years? None of us are perfect, that's for sure but to hold someone accountable for someone else's actions and words i just WRONG. Think about it.

The Clintons have NOTHING on Senator Obama. I do think, however, they were responsible for those sound bytes of Rev Wright. Why so many think he is responsible for what his pastor said, is beyond me. Are all of those people who think that way responsible for what their friends and family say and do? If your father kills someone, does that make you a killer as well? After all, you've lieved with him for how many years?? If your mother robs a bank, does that make you a bank robber as well? How many years have you lived with your mom? HappyDay41Good for you! I am a mom of two with modest income as well, and I too have donated repeatedly to the Hillary campaign, and will continue to do so. It's important to me that my two little girls see that it's important to fight for what you believe in, and I believe in Senator Clinton.

Now, as far as her being "ashamed of herself for taking people's money," (because they have so much), what about the Obama's? Let's be honest, he isn't exactly living in the poorhouse either. So that's a moot point. We all can agree that campaign spending is out of control, but I guess we can't all have Oprah's money, now can we? Wouldn't her money be better spent on charity, as well?

As far as accusing the Clintons of being the ones who allegedly released the J. Wright tapes, and "Why should Obama be held accountable..." He ABSOLUTELY should be held accountable here! You can't tell me (at least, you can't if you're a Christian) that you can be super-involved with a church and a pastor for 20+ years, and separate the faith and the message. That's bull, and we all know it. Senator Obama might be an alright guy, but he doesn't walk on water! And the fact that he bought into Wright's horrible message is scary to me! Those are horrible, hateful words spoken by that man, and Obama is only NOW saying that if Wright hadn't left, he would have left the church. Well, what took him so long? Is his moral compass suddenly now pointing due-North since he has become a Presidential candidate? Well then, maybe I should run...who knows what kind of awakening I may have!

Anyway, those are just some thoughts I needed to get off my chest. The bottom line for me is, unless they let the people of Michigan and Florida vote and have their voices be heard, I don't care who the Dem. nominee is. I will "un-register" from the party for sure. I don't believe in disenfranchising voters, I believe to do so is to infringe upon their Constitutional rights as U.S. citizens, and I will not support a party that seeks to ignore Democracy.

The anger at Senator Obama's success expressed by the comments below is contradictory, illogical and often oddly quaint. Many people seem to have forgotten that this is a political contest in which Senator Obama has excelled. Generally, it is bad form to attack the winner simply because he performed better than his oponent. Try to imagine what you would feel if Senator Clinton were not running this year. Perhaps all of the anger you feel is actually caused by the fact that your candidate is not winning. Perhaps you are truly angry that Senator Clinton's campaign thus far has been surprisingly poorly run. Perhaps you should remind yourselves of how saddened, angered or depressed you have been these last 7+ years and then ask yourselves if you truly want another 4 years of the same simply because you cannot stand the fact that Senator Obama has outorganized, outfundraised and outperformed Senator Clinton. If you can do this, I ask you to remember that Senator Obama is inspiring millions to create real transformational change in this Country -- the kind that will get us healthcare reform that is substantial not simply the horror of HMO's that are the worst combination of socialism and out-of-control capitalism I have seen in my lifetime. Finally, ask yourselves what values you want in the Oval Office on January 9, 2009 -- if the values you want are the values we share (healthcare reform, improved public education, rebuild and improve our crumbling infrastructure, Supreme Court Justices and a President who obey the Constitution, out of Iraq and etc.) then ask yourselves if you wouldn't prefer Senator Obama in that White House to Senator McCain.

Finally, I remind you that Senator Obama did not hire Mark Penn and Senator Obama does not make former President Bill Clinton wag his finger in people's faces.

The meaning of that word has been entirely corrupted and is now used, as in your expression, as a word that means "I am not responsible for my situation. Somebody DO something (for me). The government (ultimate form of "society") is responsible for me AND my situation AND my consequences." Our whole culture is now so far gone on "I'm not responsible for my situation because......." I am beginning to think it may not come back. Keep in mind, folks: The government HAS NO MONEY, except for what they take from us. My only request of society/government is to LEAVE ME ALONE, and stop taking so much of my hard earned money to pay for programs that are apparently aimed at proving to all the 41s in the country that "we care about your issues". (Related thought: you chose your child's father...I don't see why the results of your choices should suddenly become "society's" responsibility. I think the results of your choices are your responsibility. Go figure.

Words matter as well as money matters. Perhaps if Senator and President Clinton had ever had to live and support their families like the average working woman./man they would not be so desperate now in understanding and attracting people to them. As a working class white grandmother I have stuggled to support my children and teach them through WORDS and ACTIONS how to live a productive and honorable life. It's not what you have in life, but how you get to where you are that matters at the end of the day.

As tough as it is to survive in today's world, honesty, judgement, good planning and organization can get you a step forward. Knowing WHO you really are and having strength in your convictions and charactor is a magnet that draws and unites.

Unfortunately lack of charactor, lack of honesty, lack of judgement and lack of good organizational skills has killed the chance of achieving our first female president. Barak Obama is not a perfect man, There is no prefect human, but Barak has shown us what it takes for the common man to move forward. He has shown us that we do matter and that we can change things if we unite.

Two quick items: First, beware the circular reporting -- that is quoting Ben Smith and Josh Marshall who will in turn quote you quoting them. as dialy readers of both of their blogs know, they seem to simply reprint Clinton talking points as gospel and transcribe Wolfson conference calls verbatim. That said, you may be getting rehashed and recycled "information," not news.

Second, given the penchant of the Clinton campaign to play fast and loose with the truth, from the race being a "virtual tie," Bosnia and Northern Ireland, the false story of a young mother dying because a hospital wouldn't admit her, NAFTA -- the list goes on -- Wolfson suggesting that "almost all" of Clinton's March haul is primary money and the delay to make some kind "official" announcement as to what she actually raised, should be taken with a grain of salt.

I have to agree with you that it will be money that eventually halts Clinton's campaign. Despite the massive wealth the Clintons have accrued in their post-White House years, I do not see them "puling a Romney" and self-financing this campaign. The end -- along with the ever shifting goalposts they erect to "measure" success -- is near.

You kow it still amazies me how much the media, yes you Mr. Romano included, tend to lean the criticism on HiIlary instead of staying neutral and just writing balanced pieces.. When I read your article the take home message for me was Wow she can win states even when Obama outpsends her that is like the good old American dream. He can't buy his way into the working people. But of course typical of how the whole campaigm has been you didn't touch on that.

Anyone who has ever invested in anything should not be surprised. Obviously one invests in order to get a return. When your investment does not pan out, you stop pouring additional money into it. If the money is now going to Obama, the answer is simple: The investors have changed horses and now support the candidate who has a chance to win. The idea that the Clintons were somehow entitled to win was ridiculous in the first place.

the original number coming out of obama campaign leak for march fundraising was closer to 30 mil. then it was changed to 40 mil.

QUESTION: how much of the 40 mil reflects donations in march that can ONLY be used in the general election?

#1) Hillary and Bill made a lot of money selling two best-sellers. Since she came from a middle-class family and he came from even less, I say more power to them-- They are an example of the American Dream coming true--much like Obama's story.

#2) I never deprived my children of anything. Read my post again. I gave up a pair of jeans, a pizza (lunch with friends), I rode the bus rather than driving, etc. I would never take from my children... they get what they need first.

#3). If I believe that my donation to HIllary's campaign IS investing in my children's future, then why can't I? Are you saying you would prefer to dictate which candidate everyone supports, and if I don't agree with you ... what? Should I die? Leave the country? Be arrested? What would you suggest? You are so angry in your post. Is it just because I like someone other than who you like?

Sorry. I thought the point was to have a choice.

TO ALL WORKING-CLASS AMERICANS

Bill and Hillary made only $109 Million over 7 years. They are entitled to make that much money because Bill is a former President. If we do not treat our former President with the kind of money they deserve, and because the Pension the former Presidents receive from our Tax money is next to nothing (how much is that anyway?), Bill and Hillary are entitled to make all the money in the world they are able!

On average, the Clintons made ONLY $15.5 Million a YEAR.

You and I, the working class Americans make about $50,000 a year for the FOUR mouths to feed, a college student to pay for, the enormous amount of energy bill, the mortage payment that seems to go up every day, etc.etc. and we still have a few bucks left. Let us not spend this in eating out or going to a movie once a month.

Let us donate EVERY DIME that is left to the Clintons. They made only $15.5M a year, after all. They deserve our hard earned cash, every dime of it.

Le us all support the Clintons. They know and support us the best. They ARE one of us!! They KNOW what kind of life our family has, what kind of financial situation we are in, ...

Go the Clintons, ONE OF US!!

I wish CNN and MSNB were as astute as Andrew Romano. As soon as the Clinton camp announces its fundraising achievements, cable news can't wait to present the numbers. A little skepticism, or investigation, is surely warranted. But then again, news of Clinton faltering does not serve cable news. Their coverage of this race certainly hurts the credibility of CNN and MSNBC.
