His message has to be a bit blurred. However, in one area he is a bit far out, namely Iraq. If McCain is wise, he will do what Reagan did. Reagan asked people to ask themselves if they felt better off after Carter. McCain can shift the question to the future and ask people will they really feel safe from another 9/11 under either Hillary or Obama? This will give a lot of people pause. As much as I don't really like McCain, I have to admit that I think we will all be a whole lot safer under him.

Another thing that McCain has going for him is the anti-diversity vote. I don't think America is really ready for either a black or a woman President, mainly because we haven't even had a black or woman VP yet. This is jumping the gun too soon. The time will come for diversity in the Presidency but it is not now.

The last thing he has going for him is that he is truly the least of three evils, Hillary, Obama, McCain. This is why a lot of conservatives will end up voting for him. Truly conservative people hate Hillary with a passion and will not be able to resist a chance to vote against her. Obama is a gentleman but he has the most liberal voting record in the Senate, so conservatives will be glad to vote against him as well. There is also a lot of residual racial prejudice in America. That will be another reason that people and not just conservatives will vote against Obama.

It will be just like having Bush in office. McCain wants to keep killing our troops. His plan for healthcare sucks. McCain isn't going to do anything good for this country or the American people. I hope people who are going to vote for McCain is a mistake. He's not who we want in office. With republicans in office this country will never straighten out. Our troops will NEVER come home. There will still be a lot of people who don't have healthcare and housing will get even worse. Gas prices will NEVER go down. Democrats are for the poor and less fortunate people in this country. Life is so much better when there is a democrat in office, so please, do not vote republican.

About the artical, can you say "so left of center almost falling off the map liberal?" McCain has a problem. At times he makes attempts at politics and political thinking. This makes him look less than honest. He should stick with what he does best, straight talk. Everytime he starts acting like a politician we get the ultra liberals (like young Andrew who wrote this artical) screaming that McCain in some way is dishonest about himself or his abilities as a canidate for president. On the other hand we have 2 ultra liberal senators with little experience in any arena of politics except for election politics. They are beating each other up verbally and destroying any decdent chance the democrats had at getting someone elected. McCain has stepped on quite a few republican feet with his moderate voting record and I'm sure a few republicans won't vote for him but thats what is making him attractive to most swing and some democrat voters. He is a true moderate with morals that needs to stick with straight talk and leave the political speak to the democrats.

The Founding Father's of our nation are turning in their graves right now seeing what the great nation they created has become. Heaven forbid you actually set goals, work hard toward those goals and make your own destiny and don't tell me I don't know how hard it is. I am a single mother of two who makes less than $25,000 a year. I know how hard it is.

I was raise by a die hard democrat in a republican community. I think McCain is our best choice of the three. Of course we would all like our president to be perfect and come from some magical land, but it won't happen. You have two democarts, one who seems to be influenced by the teachings of a pastor who no one agrees with and the other who just doesn't seem to have the grit to get through to the white house. I know that Obama is new a different but so was the Chia Pet and well that did not last very long. The honesty and straight talk that McCain has, such as in his speech to the unions in Detroit, are exactly what America needs. Finally, being a former marine I say let us do our job. When we signed our name to the contract and took our oath to defend our country, we do it at all cost. We don't get to choose when it is convenient. All my brothers are working hard and get tired of hearing us argue about it while we sit on the couch!

You got it wrong. It's not about our troops not deserving a college education, it's about affecting the military's readiness by allowing them to leave the service early.

And, I assure you that most Americans no matter their disagreements with McCain, when time is given for them to think about the looming thoughts of the next terrorist attack will not vote for Hillary or "Hussein." I don't care what the news media has to say about much of anything! I know where I stand as an American, and I will vote for John McCain. I want to say to those who have made this an ethnic race rather than a politcal race, you are wrong! I for one don't care about the color of an individual; what I am concerned about is their beliefs, experience, and over-all knowledge of the state of our nation, and at this current time our nation is facing some very dangerous foes (terrorist nations/groups). If, we as a nation elect someone to the office of president based on our back pocket and get ourselves annihilated, what then?

Are the Dems really for the poor...

In just one year . Remember the election in 2006?

Thought you might like to read the following:

A little over one year ago:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;

2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;

3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.

Since voting in a Democrat Congress in 2006 we have seen:

1) Consumer confidence plummet;

2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;

3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);

4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);

5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;

6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!

I understand you comment but making 25,000 a year does not equate to more bang for the buck with social security. as they are pure income driven amounts. i made 25,000 a year, and now i make 725 per month on social security -go figure. by your math i should be set, but at 725 a month in my state, it's to much for assist, but again my kids are raised, on alpo and gainsburger but well fed and strong enough to follow there fathers footsteps into the Marines! so i know i did somethng right, and none of it was given by a GOP government!

Y and Z aren't the enemy.

I sent in this response which was printed in today's paper and I think it speaks to this article's premise that McCain is walking a tightrope with his mixed and confused messaging:

Regarding “Welcome talk/McCain's message bodes well for everyone” (Editorial, April 29):

I'm sure the people of the small towns that John McCain visited feel a lot better now that he's told them the government essentially cannot, and will not, do anything to help improve their lives. And as the result of his “straight talk,” they're going to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make America competitive again. But who are these messages really aimed at? Not the people who live in the small towns left behind in the global economy, but rather the same Republican base that believes this line of thinking and has years of experience to prove the exact opposite is true.

Like you, I also hope McCain continues to take his campaign and these talking points to America's forgotten places, because it will only help to remind people that a government that does nothing to help its people, gets just that out of them.

I did not know we would be lied into a war, kept there against our will with the Iraqi govt entertaining Iranians and the Afghan govt telling our troops not to chase the taliban.We now have a seven month high in the killing of our troops.Our economy is out of control and some idiots try to use a formula as to wether we are in a recession. Tell those who have lost a home, a job or paying $4.00+ for a gallon/gas according to our formula we are not in a recession. Under Bush in seven years we have needed 2 economic stimulus packages and now McCaine with no understandin of the economy but assures us we can count on his commitment to Iraq (probably for the shortfalls of Viet Nam) wants to be president. I'm sick to my stomache of the killing of our troops. Check into a nice assisted living home and play with your army toys and let us concentrate on our problems here in the USA. George has done enough damage.

I understand that fully but with the time that was going on then we had a very large armed forces and with the cold war at an end there was no need for the large armies that we had so yes we had to close bases that are not used as much or to close two of the three training camps for the Navy to better fund the main one that we have. Yes i am sure that every one in the world knows about the operation cyclone I just want to enlighten the mis-informed about the "budget cuts" look at the electon 04 now the democrats party had great ideas to get the budget balanced to take the debt and try to eliminate it. well look at the fine print in that bill by cutting the finances from the armed forces they were going to make health care more Affordable well that makes great sence for the civilian scetor but it hurts us. i know that we are trying to down size the current armed forces size to make it a stronger and smarter service but lets not take the bread and water away quite yet my friend.

As of 2000 the Dems did not have a snowballs chance except for posing it's all the GOP dominated gov would allow the dems figured if we cut we pull out but not GW no matter how much we DON'T have we spent it in Iraq yes i wunlike America respect Soldiers  and VETERANS and no one yeloled but the Dems when 1 TRILLION was stripped from the budget for healthcare and benifits. the GOP has plundered this and many other countries during Nam in the Sand. Face it man from 2000 to now the Dems have had no power to change the diapers on Idi Amin. who died this last year in Saudi, as did Phol pot, died there a year prior! so why are we nuking the entire region, and not the bad guys we are in bed with? thanks to current gov and current and prior Gov INCLUDES MCCAIN voting against the will of the people, now you want to vote for him??? Obama could not vote, but did mention what would happen, and it did! it seems every time we get someone to tell the Gov where to get off, the people deem them  Enimies like Kerry [who was right}

This is not now a country i'm proud to have served, in fact I'm embarrased, and feel the need to apoligize to the public for living and becomming a Veteran! Sorry folks i did not die, and now i'm just a burden on YOUR establishment! you can't cut a budget when all bills with funds were raided for IRAQ!

I'm always amused by this line of thinking and would love to see examples of how families and churches can help provide health insurance for the millions of Americans who can't afford it; how families and churches can help re-educate workers whose job skills are no longer in demand; how families and churches can help people afford the rising cost of gas, food and housing. McCain isn't talking to speculators who lost money on housing when he says he can't do anything to help them - he's talking to average Americans who don't have the luxury of parents and relatives to help them stay afloat. Most people aren't looking for government handouts. From the capitalist God Ronald Reagan through the Bushes, Cheneys and now McCain, we've seen ample evidence of what happens to a country when governments pander to these capitalist myths: a disappearing middle class, more poverty, loss of global competitiveness and financial programs that benefit companies more than individuals.

Look i dont think that we were "lied into a war" in 2000 if I remember correctly when I was in the Med I think there was a "explosion" that took the lives of 13 of our fellow Naval service members and when that happenend we were stunned, then in 2001 we were deliberiatly attacked by terriosts to "weaken" our country remeember the people that had nothing to do with the "war" that were killed and us as AMERICANS were all hurt and we declared war on terror and that is when I got my National Defence when we went to war on terror. Now in 2003 we started the "shock and awe" campaigne and I never recieved another National Defence because we were still in the war agenst terrorism not a war with Iraq you need to understand that. We knew that the country harbored allot of terriost training camps and we wnated to end that and we did. Now we are trying to rebulid their country and that is what we are doing. If we leave now we lose all that we have worked for for this long and we as a country all wanted this to happen in the begining this is not a SR. and JR. war we are trying to liberiate a country that asked us for help and we are donig that and they are thank full for that. We are a world power and we need to help out if we can and we would of gotten this done allot earlier if it wasnt for all the anti-war democrats getting in the way. Let the Armed Forces do what they are trained to do and all that I ask is that you support us for our choice to do this. It is a volunteer service still and has been since let me think Bush SR time area.

      I misunderstood what you meant by "income driven" - you meant everyone gets the same bank for their buck. It's true that it's based on something like your high 35 yr average, so it would sound like that. But, I probably made twice what you did, but I can't retire till I'm 66 and then I won't get $1,450 plus. My sister makes twice what I do, and she won't be getting $2,900.00 - that's what I meant by being slanted towards the lower earner. And that's only for the SSA calculation. Then there's the taxability. Figure whoever makes more has more pension income. So, that would mean I have double yours and my sister has double mine - or 4 X yours. The taxability of the SSA income comes into play. And that's the way it should be. And it may not stay that way if the Republicans stay in power. Even though I registered as a Democrat due to my fondness of JFK as a child and teenager, I voted Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Reagan and Bush, either under Republican or Right to Life. I veered away from Bush the second term, not because of tax cuts - but because he took credit for toppling Russia, but no responsibility for the repercussions in the Eastern Block. I couldn't stand Clinton but I voted for him anyway and was rewarded by his actions there (remember Colin Powell - you break it you buy it). After 8 yrs, I though he was a really good president that left this country in good financial shape. Then, I became interested in recent history. I don't think Nixon was as bad as I did when he resigned, compared to Bush, now. But Reagan was bad for this country. I don't think Papa Bush was that bad, but this guy is horrible and we really have to be careful about the next guy. I know I keep going - but I'm going out now -

    Take care and once again - Thank you for serving - Penny

     I hate to get involved in your message to Art. I understand everything you said and agree with it. The only exception I take, is you failed to point out where Iraq was involved in what you said. If it wasn't then weren't we lied into war? Oops another exception - America does have an all volunteer service - but what about the stop loss gap - the so called back door draft. You must know that any inkling of that is in super fine print and the first notion a lot of them has is when the are forced past their contracted time. Also what about the use of our national defense and emergench teams - the National Guard and Reserves? What about the multiple tours in exess of a year - as long as 15 months? It's not that I mind the soldiers that want to be there being there even if it's a such a great financial expense to the country. I wouldn't be nearly so anti war, if they would bring home the Guard, the Reserve, the soldiers affected by the Stop Loss measure, and those there for multiple tours or in excess of a year, unless they volunteer to multiple tours or combat in excess of a year. Oh and then they should get all the medical care, disability aid and education benefits that they need.

No at the age of 50 ss starts to request you retire with less, so work till 65 make more! i'm on Disability as SS is so much quicker than the VA it's not funny, but i took SSDI and at 35,000+ income it gets taxed, but my other would have to earn the extra funds, as soon as i work for 9 months they pro-rate your income. who is going to hire a person who HAS to take 325mg of morphine a day-no one with brains, workmans comp charges to much for my presents, to get a job, even in an office, comp charges like i'm a high steal worker-high risk, to expensive, and the tax breaks for hiring me does not come close to what comp charges. this is one area of universal healthcare which help people like me, cause comp is gone, and then i'm employable. Social Secutity has income limits as far as to what they will pay, so it's not perfect, but without i'm homeless, again! 3 times as of 2000, so i'm carefull as to what, or who i rant at! thanks

Am I the only one who believes they are intentionaly trying to keep the same people in Iraq so they know who to drop when it's over, or does not more than half of the USMC will never see Iraq cause they are west pac commandos, ever cross your mind?! With Our current World military numbers, why do they need stop-gap? as we have plenty to replace them, but we don't. why? When i joined they were in the begining of seperating Nam Vets from Cold War Soldiers i jioned in 79 and got classified Nam era in boot i learned to kill or die with honer, marching was not required so when all hit the fan i was in the wrong place at my right time [i left cause i started to enjoy my job to much] and no not a lot know of our involvment in that era of that country cause as per Bush Sr. "We have nobody in the middle-east" My name is nobody,still!so when they do find we armed trained and funded a good friend of the Bush family they are in disbelief! To bad my last op was to bag and tag 241 Marines that an org called DAWA blew to hello! no fun at all! That's where i blew up and refused orders but never saw a courtmartial just my walking papers.
Unfortuniatlly with the extended tours that our service member are having to do is a problem that I am seeing every day that I am here and I wish that there was some way to stop that. The only option that I could ever see is if we were to pull out but by donig that it is just going to show that we are weak and had to pull out. What i would like to see is if there was a better retention in the service that would make our service member want to stay in longer then they have to. Now unfortuniatlly with the down sizing of the service that is just getting into the domino effect. I was in the process of getting into the SPEC OPS for the Navy and was denied because of my age and rank and I wanted to help but i couldn't What i would like to see is a better social support of the armed forces in the news and families around the US so when a 17 or 18 year old kid decides to enlist their parents are not pushing them away from it because of their views of the goverment. I served 3 years as a recruiter and i know first hand the problems that we have with getting the youth of america to stand with uncle sam the way our parents did many years ago. The deployment times would not be this bad if we had a better ratio of enslitments and the goverenement does not want to re-enstate the dreded draft again.

Hackojean- when you say, "fox news is my main news source," you reveal more about yourself than I think you realize.

Nightsnipe- Iraq had zero to do with the bombing of the USS Cole or the Embassy bombings in Africa. Additionally, you said, "We knew that the country harbored allot of terriost training camps and we wnated to end that and we did." Well, wrong and wrong. If you care to investigate, there are actually more terrorist there now directly as a result of our actions. And by the way, WE don't need to rebuild their country, THEY can. We intentionally blocked their contractors in favor of ours!

Any member of the military that doesn't see how this administration is damaging their strength and reputation simply isn't operation on the facts.

Even though the Dems have control of congress, they do not have a veto proof majority. Thus, their power is limited, especially when you look at Liberman's threat to switch sides, which would give the majority to the Republicans.

So, just so we are clear, after 8 years of Bush- we have the worst economy in decades, a massive debt, abortions are up, real wages are down, we are stuck in Iraq and threatening Iran, we have (believe it or not) one of the worst health care systems in the industrialized world (let me know if you want me to back this up), our air and water are getting dirtier, the middle class is shrinking, etc. etc. - and it is the Democrats fault! Welcome to Fantasy Island!

     So, you understand what I meant about lower reported earnings getting more bang for the buck? That even though I paid in at least twice what you did and I will have to stay till I'm 66, I won't get twice what you get (although that may change by the time I'm 66 if I make more money).

     In any event, your message made my blood boil! This is exactly the kind of stuff I have a problem with. If you were in the service and came out taking 325mg of morphine on a daily basis, you should be on 100% disability and it should be a lot more than $725 a month. And, the VA should take care of 100% of your medical issues with no waiting time. You're sick you call the VA, you go in right away for what is ailing you. Or, you go to your own doctor and bill the VA. Like you said, if we get the universal health care that will be OK.

     I don't know where you live, but I don't see $725 as being adequate anywhere. I live on Long Island - I know it's not adequate here. You wouldn't only be homeless, you would be pretty cold. I paid almost $725 a month for the first 3 mos. Hopefull this tank will last till September ,though. Who know how much it will cost by then though!

     You're young enough, and you sound smart enough - so that they should give you a free education. Then you could get a job that you could do from home, or go into business for yourself! You could maybe even work for the goverment - I do - and they aren't such a bad employer for civilians. My job goes up almost up to 60G without any kind of managerial or superviser duties (which wouldn't be worth the raise). But it may be worth it for you. The government is good with (or they say they are good with) disabled employees. They make special exceptions to accomodate.

     Your a lot younger than I thought. Where did you pick up that name from? The Peter Seller's movie? Or was that the name of a radical 60s group? Both so long ago. Oh - no that was the Black Panthers -see.

     Don't be insulted if I don't send you another message. I'm really leaving now. My nephew has called me twice since I've been corresponding. I told him I was getting in my car 10 minutes ago.

     Once again - Thank you for serving.

Socialized medicine is not a working healthcare it is easy to find information and horror stories from individuals who have to deal with it to prove that point, I am in the medical field and meet people from around the world getting their care here in this country just for that reason, I am aware that there are a few who need a helping hand outside of the community and family, but more abuse the system then need the system. Healthcare needs to be more affordable for those who don't have it offered through their jobs, but it needs to stay private not government owned if you want good healthcare & the number of people not covered is much smaller then the media tries to portray. I am a middle class citizen and I was a single mother of 5, I have pulled myself up and educated myself, so I do believe a helping hand is necessary at times, for a limited time but the answer is not to hand out the fish daily but to teach how to fish so people can bacome independent of assistance. Also (need Change now), I thought that was the point in voting in the congress to be majority democratic and putting Nancy Pelosi in charge, what a great change that made, good luck with pushing socialism and ruining the great concept that started this country and don't forget to take all the freedoms of religion with it, under the name of politically correct

THEN YOU UNDERSTAND THE BIGGEST REASON THEY DO JOIN THE MILITARY TODAY IS THE LACK OF DECENT JOBS IN THE PRIVIATE SECTOR. AS OUR GREAT WAR MACHINE IS IN ANOTHER COUNRTY TO PROFIT FROM. 360 CORPERATIONS, 185,000 EMPLOYEES IN IRAQ, WE STEPPED IN MISSISSIPPI MUD AND PULLING OUT QUICK LEAVES THE BOOT, AND A SLOW PULL OUT STILL LEAVES A MESS! ALONG WITH A VERY LARGE EMBASSY, WE WOULD NEVER ALLOW ANY COUNTRY TO BUILD IN ISREAL OR ROME, SO WE HAVE TO HAVE SOME LONG TERM PRESENTS THERE, BUT IF WE CANNOT REBUILD OUR OWN COUNTRY, HOW CAN WE REBUILD THERES,NOW? MY SON WILL BLEED FOR HIS COUNTRY, BUT NOT FOR HALLIBURTON??? THEY CAN HIRE THERE OWN AS THEY PROVED ALLREADY! IF WE STARTED TO USE OUR ENTIRE MILITARY,, STOP-LOSS WOULD NOT BE NEEDED, AND YOU KNOW IT, SIR, DON'T YOU. I GOT MY buds TRAINING AT CORANADO CA. I OFFERED MY EXPERIENCE, AS I KNOW THOSE MOUNTAINS VERY WELL, BUT THEY SAID WE DON'T NEED SOLID INTELL, OUR SATALITES WILL FIND HIM??? SO I KNOW JUST HOW YOU FEEL, BUT I'M LABELED A USELESS MENTAL. SO MUCH FOR WINNING OR JUST FINDING OSAMA-BIN-WHO!

I find that reasoning very offensive in fact. I am a 22 year old United States Marine Corps Officer, proudly serving my country because the intangible pride and honor of defending my country and the comraderie of the Corps far outstrips the satisfaction I would feel were I to be employed in a civilian career, which by the way, I had many offers upon graduating from college. Serving in the armed forces is a noble calling, and one that less than 1% of our population is even willing to do.

Just wanted to get that out there. The military is one of the last bastions of honor and integrity in this corrpupt, greedy and selfish civilian world. The fact that all of you are able to sputter off nonsense in these blogs is because your first ammendright right to do so is protected, has been in the past, and will continue to be so long as America stands as a beacon of liberty in the world.

THEY DO NOT GIVE DOCS IN CLINICS THE ABILITY TO DO AS MUCH AS THEY KNOW. DON'T WORRY I'M ALMOST HAPPY WITH LIFE. THE WORST PART ABOUT WHERE I AM IS WAGES ARE 5.15-7.00 PER HR AND no BENIFITS, EVEN IF YOU HAVE 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE THEY DON'T PAY, CAUSE THEY KNOW THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING THEY PLEASE, DUE TO LOCATION, AND THAT IS THE PITS BIG TIME.IT'S SAD TO WATCH FOLKS FIRED FOR BEING WITH CHILD, AND NO BROKEN LAW CAN BE ENFORCED, NO ATTY TO WORK FOR YOU HERE. Something along the line of: "1) Leave your prejudices and generalizations out of your comments - they neither validate your argument nor make you appear, in any way, intelligent. 2) Attacking someone's grammar and not their argument doesn't mean that your argument is any better. 3) Saying that an article is a clear example of the liberal/conservative media bias (take your pick) without explaining why is not an argument or even a very interesting point. 4) DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING THAT THE MEDIA TELLS YOU!!!

Another thing that would make me happy (and I imagine a lot of other people as well), would be to quit making comments like "We need to elect McCain because he'd be the best to support our troops who are fighting in Iraq for our rights and freedoms and if Obama or Clinton are elected we could be "annihilated"...bla bla bla". Um...I respect our troops and what they do, but this war has NOTHING to do with our rights or freedoms. Maybe that's what Bush has said, but it's a lie. Do you think that we would have lost our freedom of speech or the right to bear arms or something if Saddam Hussein were still in power? Seriously? Was Iraq a serious threat to us? Was Al-Qaeda even IN Iraq before we "annihilated" that country? If you've answered "yes" to any of the previous questions please go read a couple books - and nothing by Anne Coulter! A REAL book. Something based on facts and not opinions. I would recommend reading more than one (although I'd be happy and surprised if you make it through just one) so as to be able to get a better perspective.

Yeah... this has turned into more of a rant than a comment. It's your fault though! You get me riled up with all of these ignorant comments. Granted, not all of them are ignorant - of course not - but it's pretty amazing just how many are. Makes me realize how Bush could be elected and why every other developed country laughs (and probably sheds a couple genuine tears) at the ignorance of Americans.

Depressing... I'll stop now.

But don't forget to read some books!!! (preferably with more words and less pictures!)

Several points have already been made regarding the content of Romano's piece, however, I must agree that it is highly passionate against McCain only. Romano is having a conversation with himself more than writing to a reader. Regardless of subject matter, (he could have been passionate about mushrooms for all I care), I think Romano needs better writing skills to make the point/counterpoint expand to both sides with equal passion.

Romano has forgotten that it has already been said somewhere that a much larger McCain campaign strategy will be revealed when he actually has someone to run against, to debate with, etc. The other candidates have a better advantage right now to plan ahead with McCain as their direct opponent. This works in their favor and there is nothing wrong with it.

Also, what did that one comment say earlier, that McCain was possibly "the less of three evils"? That was a very good point. I feel that this is the way McCain probably is right now. On the fence. And with certain voters like myself, on the fence and waiting. None of the three candidates are president yet, none of them have made foreign policy yet, none of them have overhauled this or that in government yet. Romano is really reaching in this piece for solid McCain policy that doesn't even exist yet. And ultimately, I would think McCain (and the other two as well) would hate to think of themselves like that: a lesser of the three evils, just picked aside from the other two. Mr. Romano, when you were younger, didn't you want to be PICKED for basketball...not just the last one to be counted?

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Melling- that's an excellent suggestion, and one I'm sure Johnny will studiously ignore.

The poster on down thread that itemizes McCain's less than forthright moments with the public fails to note that there's the matter of his absolute refusal to abide by those restrictions he'd place on other campaigners with his use of his trophy second wife's business jet.I guess Mccain-Feingold was just a suggestion for Johnny.There's the matter as well that fellow POWS could bring up of Johnny having been nicknamed the POW songbird.

things may change in Congress but as soon as it HAS TO GO TO THE SENATE where the change is stumpped,stopped,re-written,cut to shreads like the healthcare bill for kids! Congress gave the Senate 120 places to get revenue to do the job, and when it got to Bush only smokers would flip the bill??? Build a healthcare system on an unstable tax base is B.S.! Make all over the age of the retirment age, they voted yes on, and restaff, i agree. This would get rid of McCain who is 15 years past the age he REQUIRES you to retire!

The press have pursued the Reverend Wright issue ad nauseam to the exclusion of the important issues that should be covered by the presidential campaign. Now, Senator McCain has weighed into the fray with his own criticisms of Reverend Wright and, also, Obama's association with William Ayers. McCain has even criticized a positive comment made by a member of Hamas about Senator Obama. Throughout this Reverend Wright firestorm, the media have remained remarkably silent about McCain's affiliations with the Christian right. When McCain was running for president in 2000, he criticized the Bush campaign for "pandering to the outer reach of American politics and the agents of intolerance", such as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. Earlier this year he took back the "agent of intolerance" quote and gave the commencement address at Falwell's Liberty University. In fact he has also been hiring Falwell's staffers to advise him on communications issues. Furthermore, Senator McCain's "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion"; and John Hagee, another political supporter, believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult." Senator McCain has stated that he disagrees with the extremist statements of these supporters. He cannot have it both ways--his castigation of Obama's "controversial" associations and vindication of his own unapologetic affiliation with Christian extremists. The media are doing the American public a great disservice by focusing on Senator Obama and not Senator McCain's embrace of this extreme faction in the Republican Party.

It's my given right to do so I EARNED IT, thank you very much! McCain is not close to Bozo he is more far gone than that! How many 75 year old folks, who do not shop, know the prices we all have to pay, or how many extra hours we work, to eat real food ,or having that second job working 90 per week to make ends meet? they are all set for life! what do any of the old guys care? For the old instent gratification is the way to go, for those younger like 46 [me or Obama] long term is the only action avail, cause your not going to die soon, so you don't have to live by there own rules ,like they have been lately-not!

  He has flip-flopped more often than a Romanian gymnast (How about Nadia Comaneci as a compatible Veep running mate?). And he has frequently & erraticaly changed course like a ship captain (cf. Joseph Hazelwood) tanked up on vodka, shots of which McCain once said he'd downed with Hillary during a junket awhile back and then...you guessed it..... characteristacally denied the incident so as not to tick off the Repub base.

  Then there's the case of McNasty being in favor of the air passenger's bill of rights a few years back & suddenly flip-flopping to vote "Nay" - followed by some airline lobbyist $$$$ being deposited immediately thereafter in his campaign coffers.

  The 20+ years of supply-side Reagonomics have been thorougly discredited; the railing against Big Guvmint is more methane contributing to global toasting; Milton Friedman's unfettered freemarketeering has demonstrated its limitations; and, in a time of war & astronomical national debt, Grover Norquist & his ilk are increasingly being shown to be just what they are: members of the economic lunatic fringe.

  Kudos to Newsweek for FINALLY taking a long, hard look at John McCain's agenda. I served in Vietnam & I like his pluck & respect his service & suffering, but Mr. McCain is not the right man to lead this country out of the dark wood into which we've wandered. That man is Barack Obama, a man possessed of prolific courage, vision, compassion, analytical acumen, leadership skills, inspirational qualities and.JFK-like cool. Go, Barack, go!!!!!!

LET US BE THANKFUL THAT OBAMA AND HILLARY HAVE PROVIDED SUCH A WEALTH OF DETAILS THAT WE KNOW ALL ABOUT HOW THEIR PROPOSALS WILL FUNCTION AND BE PAID FOR.

Clinton proposes a golden key that unlocks a conucopia of hidden wealth that will pay for free health care and life goes on - while Obama's wife nailed his agenda when she said that the people who have accumulated any wealth at all in their lifetime are going to have to start sharing it with those who "have not". Neither Obama nor Clinton has seriously looked at the cost and the management of something as unwieldy as universal health care and it is highly unlikely that either could concoct a plan that could be immediately implemented. An example of government health care is the VA Hospital and it is loaded with problems. The serious choices the next President makes will always fall to his character and McCain's character has been tested. He doesn't have to prove his courage or metal and certainly will not surround himself with sycophants and fools or isolate himself from the public like the current administration has done for 7 years.

WHO FAVORS INTELLIGENCE, CREDIBILITY, AND EXPERIANCE? --THOSE WHO FAVOR MCCAIN...AND THERE CERTAINLY ARE ALOT OF WOMEN AND BLACKS WHO SEE THAT, TOO. FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE THINGS WILL "CHANGE" --DAY ONE-- IF A DEMOCRAT WERE ELECTED SHOULD KNOW THAT WITH A DEMOCRAT DAY ONE MIGHT CHANGE SOMETHING AND THAT SOMETHING IS: HIGHER TAXES, GREATER SECURITY RISK, UNACCEPTABLE HEALTH INSURANCE, AND A WEAKER ECONOMY- NOT A STRONGER ONE- ( HOW CAN BE IT STRONGER IF YOU HAVE TO PAY HIGHER TAXES IN 2008-20012? THIS ISN''T THE 1990''''S- TIME TO GET OVER THAT FACT ) IF VOTING FOR CLINTON OR OBAMA SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THEIR GENDER OR RACE OR THINKING THEY ARE THE ANSWERS TO ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS YOU ARE IN FOR A VERY RUDE AWAKENING. SORRY.
