What I do care about is this country and what it's going to be like for my grandkids (all 10 of them!). I want a president I can trust. Oh, I'm so relieved Obama may now "bounce back" a bit in the polls - all because the media has taken a few photos of him drinking a beer on the campaign trail; that makes all the difference! This article, as well as Newsweek's cover article, are pretty silly - like 20-somethings trying to analyze the dips and peaks of the democratic race.... Andrew, I admire your writing and you look like a smart kid, and your bio is impressive! But why must the media constantly aim for the lowest common denominator and think we're really just fools interested in entertainment type news?

Anyhow, I'm cheered by the comments below! I did want to point out, on a different topic, that we are INDEED fighting Iraq for the oil - the oil business (in which I work, in Houston) has "known" this since the outset - and it's really also because we Americans consume more than 20% (nearly 25%) of the world's total oil supply/production, yet we hardly constitute 1/10th of the world's total population. We are OIL HOGS and nobody seems to realize just how much we require to power our multiple cars, our great big SUVs, our huge trucks, the air planes we take constantly! So, while I'm hardly defending Bush and his clone, McBush, we do have to take some SERIOUS, DRAMATIC steps to reduce our dependency on this commodity - and the reason I'm so excited about Obama is that he seems to really understand the economic implications, the environmental and the urgency of this matter -- our DEMAND, as well as China's and India's and other faster-developing countries, is what's pushing prices!

Increased global demand, coupled with a very real petroleum supply shortage that has started since about 2006-2007, in which analysts like Matt Simmons (Simmons & Co. is a financial firm in Houston) have tried to tell the Pentagon, the US Govt and the rest of the oil industry that WE ARE PEAKED OUT ON OIL PRODUCTION GLOBALLY NOW... which means that from NOW ON, PRICES ARE ONLY GOING TO GET HIGHER AND HIGHER AND HIGHER due to fundamentals (it's also getting more and more expensive a capital investment to develop and produce oil in increasingly remote, high risk areas of the world, and once we've produced 50% of the global oil reserves, the remaining oil tends to be "heavier" and much harder and more expensive to produce and refine).

We need to put more than the mere $18 billion into R&D that the Bush Administration has done in 8 years; Obama is talking about $100 billion...! And I think the faster and quicker we can start to find alternate means of fueling our transportation needs, the more we can conserve on petroleum, reduce green house gases, and use oil for other needs such as plastics, medicines, cosmetics and the myriad every-day products we've come to rely on (all petroleum-based).

I don't think global warming or climate change is such a problem -- the dwindling supplies of oil are going to be the real and painful economic surprise in the coming years. We need someone with a brain who can really deeply understand these pressures and challenges so we're not stuck with some dummy like McCain - who really doesn't understand this stuff, by his own admission - or some pandering politican like Hillary (but she is smart, and someone will explain it to her).

So I'm PROUD of O. for his ad against pandering on the gas tax, but it's such a drop in the bucket.

Also I do not "get" this Elitist label. I didn't see anything wrong in calling some folks "bitter" either. I myself have often been bitter about our countries policies, particularly during 9/11 and in these past 7-8 years with the war in Iraq raging on and on, and I would never fault a politician for characterizing me in this way. Perhaps I'm an "elitist" but so is Hillary (I went to her same college) and all the Bushes (for SURE), the McBush's and all ... Why this SUPERFICIAL bashing of Obama - he's our next Prez - is that way you want to "take him out" you media who are so shallow-seeming?

So yes, we've got people literally "dying" for oil. And we need to wean ourselves off it pretty QUICKLY or we will all be fighting more wars in the century ahead for the privilege of consuming the very last drops... Why don't you write about that? Don't you all think its a little condescending of the media to think that farmers in Iowa don't know what arugala is? I have relatives in rural Ohio, and they RAISE arugula because they like it. I bet there are Whole Foods, or a similar grocery chain in IOWA. ANd I bet a lot of those Iowa farmers are college educated, can read, and count, and maybe even own a computer thats hooked up to the internet.

No offense - we need to know the candidates and feel friendly toward them, granted, but in the grander scheme of things... it seems to me we need to stop wasting time, air space and ink AGONIZING over ELITISM and other shallow-minded things.... Susan E - yes!!! Why doesn't Newsweek profile the farmers in Iowa and elsewhere to show how diverse they are themselves, and how connected they are, how they're "linked" to Whole Foods and the market for arugula around the world, or at least in the US...

This cover story and the latest commentary by Andrew and his colleagues at Newsweek just seem "planted" (ha, no pun intended) by the opposition to Obama in order to "tell" the American readership what to think about Obama - that he's somehow "elitist" because he asked the farmers about arugula. I tend to suspect McCain of extreme ignorance anyway - and usually if morons are making fun of an intelligent person it is because they are bullies, ignoramouses and feeling pretty darn insecure about it. So chalk one up against McCain, at least insofar as this story characterizes him. And Hillary should know better but she and her camp are just total bullies.

I read yesterday on this site that the latest ZOGBY poll places Obama at about 15 points higher than Hillary in NC, while they are even steven in Indiana. What happened? Is this news not going to be reported - was it false? What happened to that story??? It was on The Ruckus tab (see above) yesterday and seemed to be really good news for Obama - a decisive victory. The Zogby was the one poll that called Hillary's 10-point lead in Pa. so it seems fairly reliable.

Did the news media just gloss over that one in their effort to help Hillary (aka McBush)? Why did that poll not make the news yet? Maybe it will... interesting manipulation of information going on in this country... not that I'm terribly surprised. I've seen it before: media suppressing facts or downplaying numbers of protestors when clearly, if you witnessed the event, and then saw the reproting, you'd think you were never-never land. What is going on here?

The last time and only time I've voted was for Ross Perot. I;m pretty sure I will be voting for Barack.

I've related two the last 2 atricles I've read from Newsweek I.E. the story on Smiley Miley and this one so It makes me think there are people out there of higher intelligence. The people who put Bush in power are now crying that they are hurting Boo Hoo The Blue Collar who live better than most are hurting Boo Hoo And also put Bush in Power. My poor neighbor buys himself a new toy every couple of weeks has three kids and a wife. The cars fly up down my out of the way country road daily. The welfare mothers getting those fancy nials at Wal-mart and have no food in there carts only new cloths and such. Now Clinton wants to give them free health care above what there getting now while I who is as fit as can be at 53 yrs old and doesn't need health insurance will be footing the bill. Mean while the lame and the infirm will get free health care and their off spring fornicate like monkeys and will pay little if nay taxes in their life time live better than I do. Reading these comments are so funny to me. When Hillary was "drinking for photos" the Obama people howled at the moon saying how ridiculous she was. Obama criticized her. It seems to me that the only way Obama supporters are happy is if ALL articles are written in candy land, rainbow colors of their candidate. I would like to point out to all you rabid Obama supporters that you nash your teeth, ready to eat at the table when there is a negative article about HIllary. And there have been plenty! You belly up to the bar of Anti-Hillary and gorge yourselves with as much indignation you can pile onto your plate and wash it down with a cool glass of, "And what about Bill..." I wouldn't mind Obama supporters boo hoo-ing in their drink of choice if they weren't so hypocritical about their comments.

NEWS FLASH- None of these candidates are squeaky clean and none of them are going to come to your house for dinner. Of course Hillary Clinton has more "baggage". She has been actively working in politics for years and has been under a microscope of the worst kind- Hypocritical, short termed memory Americans! We sure did love the Clintons when our country was flying high fiscally. And the Clintons were fighting for civil rights before Obama could or has. But, that doesn't meet your purpose, does it? You need to engage in the EXACT same "bashing" that you accuse others of. Once Obama has been truly active in American politics, he will have skeletons come out of the closet, but, we don't want to hear that now do we? If we thought about that now, then we wouldn't have our righteous indignation later and cry, "We were deceived!".

SO, Hillary bashers, belly up to the buffett and eat all you can. Do EXACTLY what you cry foul for in her. i.e. rampant negative commenting. And while you are at it, go ahead and decry any other opinion that doesn't match your own for desert. That's the American way after all. Out with the old and experienced and in with the pretty, new, and exciting. Good thing Obama isn't counting on AARP members to frequent his constituency! It is amazing that people think they can get everything for nothing. If you want shoddy roads, bridges, tunnels highways in disrepair, then by all means vote for McCain and/or Clinton. Then people complain about the loss of jobs, where do you think teh construction workers, yes those men and women you see working on the roads, they get a lot of their money to do their jobs from this gas tax. Besides, you will save more money, from the following: go the speedlimit, keep tires inflated to correct level, keep engine tuned, put your windows up (more aerodynamic), how about this..buy a smaller car!. It is hilarious that Clinton and McCain call Barack elitist. When they were the ones who refused to come clean on their taxes. They earned far more than Barack. I don't know when Clinton ever held a non-white collar job. She even had the gall to spout about her families summer cabin, where she learned to shoot. How many working people have a summer place. They know they can't damage his policy arguments, such as look at the mess we got ourself into with this war, both financially and with cost of human life. If we had spent that money here,,,oops..but then McCain would call that porkbarrel. Interesting priorities. Ok, not everyone goes to Wholefoods, but who cares..I didn't see him riding or rather showboating..in a huge gas guzzling truck like Clinton. How about stop trying to be macho Hillary, and show what your energy policy is? This is actually sad. What the blue collar workers really need is a president of Obama's education and intelligence who can solve how to stop the the migration of American industry to other countries. He has said many times that we need to start revitalizing all the towns that have suffered from competition abroad and start focusing on new industries that will make us stronger abroad. What does Obama need to do to convince blue collar workers that he is on their side? Drinking beer and eating hot dogs is not going to solve America's problems. If blue collars vote their next president on that, then they will get the government they will deserve. It is not about a free ride today. And get perturb becuase if they send me labels every two weeks how do the veterans benifit from the MONEY I CONTRIBUTE. Its not much but I do wnat it to go to Veterans who have made great sacrifies in there lives for this GREAT COUNTRY. Pick on those more deserving PLEASE. The only ones who forget the Veterans are the ones running this country. And I didn't vote for one of them. I hope you don.t think this country is on the right path, where has the quality of life gone I grew up in the 50' and 60 and if you grew up in the country on farms you would no what im talking about. We need drastic changes to get back to some sort of reality. And if by voting for a black man it could possibly do that then I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks for giving me something to do. I.m retired and have a great place in the country and there building a giant Veterans hospital 4 miles from here which is Great and not to get you mad at me again. But will bring more erosion to the qaulity of life in this area. Because of the all the employees and Doctors who will need to live. More houses so on and so on. On Hardball today, Chris interviewed the National Journal's Ron Brownstein, who went down a checklist, debunking the excuses that Obama has used for losing PA so badly.

1. He has won the blue collar vote in a bunch of other states.

Brownstein said no, that in 26 of 29 states Hillary has won the blue collar vote and didn't compete in 2 of those states she did not win.

2. He did better with the blue collar vote in Ohio

Brownstein said that he only did 2% points better, but still was swamped by the Hillary vote.

3. He has the younger vote.

Brownstein said that's misleading because he only has a consistent majority of the "under 30" vote, with Hillary more consistently getting the majority of those over 30.

4. He has the black vote in N. Carolina.

Brownstein and other panel members said that in order for Obama to carry N. Carolina, he has to have two things, a very large voter turnout and a very high percentage of those blacks who turn out to vote. Brownstein commented that Obama has not campaigned to the extent he should have to guarantee these two necessary components.

5. Brownstein also commented that in the race for the blue collar vote, the only Democrat in recent history that secured the blue collar vote was Bill Clinton and he did it twice.

I wish there were some intelligence test voters had to pass before voting. If people are making their choices for America's next president based on arugula, beer, guns, bowling or religion, there is something seriously wrong with them. Why is it suddenly a crime to like arugula or go to Whole Foods? Why is it suddenly a crime to have an education, be able to understand three-syllable words and listen to a truthful policy discussion that doesn't include pandering?

In a democracy, not all citizen participants are going to be equally informed on the issues. And that's OK. Having said that, however, it is frustrating to me and likely many others like me who take presidential and congressional elections seriously, it is frustrating that elections often tip one way or the other based on issues that pander to voter ignorance or prejudices. Many democratic candidates over the years have fallen to republican challengers who were better at pandering to hot button issues that, while important to many voters, did not address the urgent needs of the times. Frankly, I would rather have the "elitist, educated crowd" in chrage of our government, especially in the time of crisis. Just imagine if GWB and his crowd of billy-bob panderers with their "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality were in the White House during the Cuban missle crisis in 1962. I shudder to think what America would be like today if the macho, cowboy mentality that got us in trouble in Iraq were in charge then. No thanks, I will take a thinking, intelligent and reasoned president in the White House any day over some dumb slob with a C average who can't think at more than a 12th grade level. All we need to do is look at what havoc GWB and his band of buffoons have gotten us into. We need a president who can do the right thing for the future of America, not what's necessary to win over a bunch of blue collar beer drinkers who can't tell the difference between arugula and romaine lettuce.

You're not really old enough to be the cynic you seem to be. Not enough water under your bridge yet, Young Man.

Obama is for real. He is a man of integrity and accomplishment. He will make a great President and Commander-in-Chief. We'll just have to wait and see whether he gets the nomination and then wins the general election in order for us to see his presidency unfold.

I admit that Hillary has done a darn good job of undermining some people's perceptions of Barack Obama. However, I consider it deplorable that she resorted to trying to damage him through innuendo, half truths and outright falsehoods. It is truly sad that someone who considers herself to be so experienced and so qualified to be President of the United States has spent so much time running down her opponent rather than sticking to the issues. It remains to be seen whether Obama can weather this storm. That a fellow Democrat would stoop to these kind of dirty tricks (harking back to the days of Nixon) in order to win the nomination will not be forgotten.

If Hillary ends up winning the nomination, I will have to hold my nose when voting for her over John McCain. While I would be half-tempted not to vote for her because of the sleaziness she has engaged in, the US cannot tolerate 4 more years of Bush wamed over. What a choice and what a shame if that comes to pass!

Then just days before the Ohio/Texas primaries, the Clintons leaked that Obama's campaign had assured the Canadian Embassy that Obama wasn't serious about NAFTA.

Problem was, I had read the original story in the Canadian Press. Clinton was the only one mentioned as having contacted the Canadian embassy, almost 2 weeks before.

I don't know how old you are frankie, but since you seem to know so little about either candidate, could I suggest you do some research?

Her failed Healthcare plan, derailed mostly because she demanded utter secrecy.

Loss of jobs in NY after Clinton became Senator.
