Note to Obama: We, sir, are not bitter. If we are religious it is because we believe in a higher power that guides our hand in order to better serve our fellow man. It has been the generousity of Americans that have come not only to the aid of fellow Americans when tragedy strikes (9/11, Katrina, fires ect.), but have given comfort and aid to others around the world when when they have seen the hand of fate deal them and their loved ones a cruel blow.

We "cling" to our guns because we have seen what tyrany and oppression can do to those who have abdicated their authority to defend themselves and the ones they love. And because they have given up the fight, we stand, ready to help them rediscover the courage to claim the freedom to choose their own destiny.

You, sir, preach of an evanescent change that will magically transform America into...what ? A society of fatuous namby pambys who seek to convey their elitist opinion on those bitter, gun loving nuts who just happen to be the backbone and foundation of this country. It was their blood and sacrifice that saw this nation through two world wars, a great depression, built this nation into what it is today, and even now stand on the front lines and sacrifice their lives so others may live in freedom. And you, sir have sacrificed...what? From what I can tell, not much.

You can pander and you can pretend, but in no way can you ever relate to those who you speak so disparagingly of. Your haughty attitude is like a mirror that reflects your true personality; Your change a facade, that masks the Machiavellian intent of a hypocrite.

We aren't a joke. We are hard working American families who are NOT MAKING IT. We were not making it when the Clintons last occupied the White House. While Hillary out making jokes, Barach is trying to make a difference. Count me as another Republican crossover, for Obama. You imply that McCain is a crook. Please support this accusation by citing laws that he has broken and supplying verifiable evidence that he has broken them.

In other words, according to Obama, lots of people are just too stupid to understand global economics and government policy, so they grasp at unrelated issues to make themselves feel better in your ignorance. It is as though you explained to someone that you were angry about a factory using a tax incentive to shut down in your town and outsource the jobs to a developing country at a fraction of the cost, and then that person told you that you really are angry because you desperately cling to anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain frustrations that you don't really understand. Can you not see what arrogant condescension there is in such a remark -- that this man of privilege claims to understand your pain better than you do; and that if you are a gun owner, or a believer, or someone who favors better enforcement of immigration laws, or who thinks that free trade has left some people behind despite its promises of prosperity for all -- well, then, you are just using these as coping mechanisms or scapegoats for the real problems that you clearly don't have the intelligence to understand like Obama does.

We must vote for a candidate that will take this country in a new direction, with new ideas, and a new agenda. This means, to anyone that's been listening, we need to elect the one, anyone, that is running against McCain. You know, I respect the man, I admire his patriotism, his long suffering in a POW camp during Viet Nam. He is a true American Hero. This does not, however, make him the best candidate for our next President!!! I hope voters will all come together and vote for a Democrat as our next President and allow changes in policy to take place. We cannot allow a "Texas Gunslinger" with a chip on his shoulder, full of lies, deceit and total lack of regard for the laws of this nation, to continue as our leader, in the name of John McCain.

what he clarified it to mean was:

They vote on issues like gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and their community and their families and the things they can count on. But they don't believe they can count on Washington."

So he isn't saying that people are too stupid to understand economics, he's saying that people have gotten smart enough to not be fooled by the Washingtonians that go to these new towns and promise a golden sunrise. And when you aren't fooled by that anymore then you vote for what you feel really will affect you, God, Guns, marriage and immigration. Your assessment is completely off.

There is absolutely NO reason for American citizens to own hand guns or automatic weapons of any kind. Their sole purpose is to kill. Hunters use rifles and shotguns, not these other firearms. Except for hunting purposes, all firearms should be deemed illegal. Our country would be a safer place to live.

If you think our Militia should be allowed to have firearms, fine, join the military, become part of the militia and you can have your guns, and use them defending our country, not shooting ordinary citizens.

You can ban handguns as much as you can ban the use of fossil fuels. The genie's been let out of the bottle never to return. It's an old argument but a truism, if you ban handguns then only outlaws will have handguns. It's ironic that the VA Tech shooter, had he not shot himself, would have faced a charge of illegally possessing a gun on campus. One needs to allow guns (legal, permitted, registered ideally with well trained citizens holding them) wherever metal detectors are not present. That way law-abiding citizens with registered weapons may be able to halt crimes committed by criminals with guns.

If someone can find a magic ray out there which will vaporize all handguns at the same time, I'm all for it. But barring that, hand guns are here to stay.

The bolt handle in the picture is sticking out the left side (if you were to look down the barrel toward the sights from the butt stock) They only make those with a bolt handle on the right. The image was reversed (making it a mirror image), which is different than simply turning it around in your hands.

If you need another example take a picture of two people shaking hands (with their right hands) now hold it up to a mirror. In the mirror the two people are now shaking left hands.

I am a staunch, left-wing, bleeding heart liberal with about 20 guns in my possession. The reason I collect them is two fold. A. I like precision made machines, and guns fit into that category. B. The guns are for protection of my home and family. When a "bad guy" breaks into my home I want to have a reasonable chance to defend myself. By the time 911 is called and arrives it is too late. The second amendment was designed to protect the peoples of this country, and that includes protecting us from our own government. Poland, Russia, and the Chezch Republic are but three examples where governments took over their citizens who had no way of defending themselves from totalitarian dictatorships. When you take away semi-automatics and handguns the only people that will have them are the bad guys who will always have access to illegal guns. Don't mess these second amendment rights. They help keep a lot of dishonest people honest.

Why is it that people buy into the rhetoric each election year of political debate over social issues that one person, the President of the United States, cannot single handedly change. Furthermore, the division between the two primary parties would never allow unity in social issues because that is how they, the politicians, keep a captive audience and seduce the hearts and loyalty of their followers.

I consider myself a conservative, however, will not commit to a single party. The one true and underlying fact is the majority of the politicians have learned and adapted key phrases such as "I don't recall", You've misunderstood me", "What I meant was" etc... and even just completely denying what they've said as it is played back for them on film, I call it lying.

So consider thie Pledge of Allegance, and what the thoughts and intentions of our founding fathers of our great nation were, to put into office those of noble character, not Dem or Rep, that will honor the norms, beliefs, and values upon which we were founded.

And to those that are not in support of those norms, beliefs, and values... quit using the very establishment that affords you those "rights, I call them privleges, to speak out against and hold demonstrations in protest of them. Stay out of our political society and if you refuse to live by them, please leave.

The trick is not to "ban" guns. As one pointed out, it will simply give the advantage to the criminals who obtain them illegally. What needs to be done, which is a lot more arduous a task, is to find ways of closing the channels by which criminals obtain their guns. It's a lot simpler from a political perspective to pander to your constituents by saying "I'm going to pass legislation that will ban guns", than it is to say "I'm going to commission the most comprehensive study of its kind to find out how criminals get their guns, and how to put those channels out of business for good". If we want to end the threat, that's what we have to do. Its not a short process, probably very expensive from a taxpayer's standpoint, but the long term gains could be tremendous.

I am for the complete ban of alcohol. Alcoholic beverages DO NOT belong in a so called civilized society. Alcohol has proven to be fatal to too many people.

See how quickly an argument for outlawing guns can turn to an argument outlawing alcohol. Alcohol kills far more Americans every year than guns do (through drunk driving and health complications) why don't we outlaw alcohol? Perhaps its is because as a society we realize that many people find non-destructive uses for alcohol in moderation and the realization that the alcohol itself is not evil but the application thereof can be.

I do not drink and I cannot imagine why people do. However, I have enough tolerance to allow others a pleasure that I myself do not appreciate. I wish that people who do not own guns, and cannot understand why I do would allow me the same courtesy, to enjoy my guns even if they themselves do not understand how I could.

Furthermore, one of the basic responsibilities of a government is to see for the safety of its people and allowing citizens to own personal firearms serves that purpose. You may see no need for handguns in our society, I do every time I take my family to less desirable portions of any major city. The second amendment allows citizens to protect themselves stemming from the realization that the government cannot protect us at all times.

Lets say we do ban handguns in this country, would that affect the manufacture of handguns in other countries? We banned assault rifles for a time, did that affect the manufacture of AK-47s in any way? No, and AK-47s still found their way to our shores even though they were banned. The majority of handgun manufacturers are foreign. Beretta is Italian, Sig-Sauer is Swiss-German, Heckler and Koch is German, Star is Spanish, Makarov is Russian, Desert Eagles are Israeli. When will we learn in this country that banning an item does no good so long as demand for that item persists, as long as their is a demand the banned item will manufactured elsewhere and smuggled here. After years of a losing effort we have learned the key to winning the war on drugs lies in cutting the demand, perhaps we should make efforts as a society to cut the demand criminals have for guns by working to eliminate crime.

On a tangent, I would like to bring up the issue of the second amendment and original intent. Gun control advocates argue that when the second amendment was written, the founding fathers were allowing the people to possess single-shot weapons and therefore our current gun-control laws should reflect that. Gun-control advocates should be careful when they make arguments for original intent. When the second amendment was written, the single shot rifles represented the absolute best of military technology. A group of 10 farmers armed with their personal firearms would be as well or better armed than 10 soldiers from any army in the world at the time. The right that the founding fathers gave to Americans of the time would be the equivalent of allowing every American today to own a M-16 with a M203 grenade launcher attachment.

Our founding fathers felt it was VERY important for citizens to be armed to preserve the freedom from government tyrany. If you want the government to control you then find your favorite facist country and see how fast you change your tune.

This country was founded on a few basic principles: Freedom of speech and religion. The right to be secure in our person. The right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. AND THE RIGHT TO BE ARMED. You can't pick and choose. The government has ZERO right to impose any restriction on the legal rights of honest citizens.

It's time people started respecting the Constitution and what it stands for. If you don't like it then leave or use the legislative process to get it changed.

While a left handed version of this particular model of gun does not exist, that does not mean there are no left-handed guns. My father is left-handed and he owns several left-handed bolt-action rifles. I think the writer of this piece is overestimating the knowledge of the average gun-owner. I own approximately 20 guns and it was not immediately evident to me that the gun pictured could not exist. I did not recognize the gun pictured as a Mauser, and other than the double set triggers, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary with this gun. Yes its left handed, which makes it somewhat unusual but non-existent.

The author makes much of the rifle pictured on the mailer – it's European, It's expensive – most hunters will immediately notice the picture was flipped. The implication is that Clinton is elitist, out of touch and doesn't know anything about guns.

Well, lets contrast this mailer with Dick Cheney's shooting of Harry Whittington. Cheney clearly demonstrated poor gun safety – managing to shoot his own partner while in an open field. But the real story is the gun Cheney shot Whittington with. It was a .28 gauge over and under Perazzi – a gun so expensive it makes the Mauser pictured look common. Guess where they are made? Brescia Italy – hand made by artisans. This is a gun so rare, so expensive, that the Texas parks and wildlife agent who filled out the shooting report put Brescia down as it's model – not knowing that's where it was made. These shotguns are custom fitted to their owner and typically cost in the $20,000 range – not the $2000 that the Clinton Mauser can be found in.

The point? Being out of touch with the people is not limited to either side of the isle. Lets face facts, the normal citizen has almost nothing in common with these ivy league educated multi millionaires. And nit picking one side while ignoring the other just exposes the authors own bias.

I'm sorry but for some reason this gun ad fumble really bothers me. It's not like I trusted Clinton before all this came up, but come on!!!!! To blatantly lie about your heritage and represent yourself as a gun loving, blue-collar gal ALL OF A SUDDEN, OUT OF NO WHERE is too much. It wreaks of sordid, slimy politics. I am really getting tired of this Clinton machine. I am weary of the acting and the posturing.

Clinton only seems formidable when she "acts" real, fighting the nay sayers; I actually start to relent and find some appreciation for her work. But, when she falls back into the usual antics of portraying herself as something other than she REALLY IS to win a vote based on the audience at hand, I find her slimy and untrustworthy.

HRC is a horrible fraud. Nothing she does is authentic. The gun inquestion has a double trigger, not to mention the left hand both. No working class joe has a double trigger hunting rifle. By the way, the double triggre is reduce trigger pull, and make for a more smooth, less jerky trigger pull.

She will find herself in deep trouble if she elected becasue now she will have to make good on all her right of center stances she took during the primary.
