Not in the past 3 years where you voted 95% for Bush policies. That's very maverick to agree with Bush 95% of the time.

Again, you came up with that dumb gas tax thing for the summer (that even the best republican economists and minds said was junk). Shows you are only out to win and then give us 4 similar years of backwardness. You are a panderer. And the price has risen 70c since your proposal to cut 18c off for a sum of $24. That's your plan. You opponents has proposed a bill for a second tax rebate of $1000 to address this issue and it gets to us not to oil companies and countries where again you want to continue spending $2 million of our money everyday.

And $5000 tax credit as the main thrust of his health plan? Do you live on this planet? Mine with wife and 2 kids cost me $19000 per year and my employer covers about half of this and now you'll eliminate employer coverage. And what happens to the uninsured. We all end up paying the big HMO for this also. Even the current system is better than your rich folk only slanted proposals.

Romano should step back to take a look at the recent history of the American presidential elections.

In the last 36 years, the Democrats have lost 6 general elections out of 9 to the Republicans:

McGovern (1972), Carter (1980), Mondale (1984), Dukakis (1988), Gore (2000), Kerry (2004).

The reason? They couldn't win the white votes.

Obama will do even worse than these guys in the 2008 GE because he couldn't even win the white votes in the Democratic primaries.

It would not surprise me if Obama ends up losing 49 states in November.

Jim Webb swung the US Senate blue (so that it could finally resume its Constitutional roles) - and he can help turn Virginia blue in November. Thousands are turning out for Obama here in VA - with an electricity that his aging rival cannot match. Note to ckwan4: Obama did very well with white voters in Virginia - so instead of pointing out mathmatical fallacies, perhaps you should study a little recent history.

Clinton won in Florida and the 73 delegates that she would have won in a flawed vote and substract the 68 delegates that Sen. Obama won in Florida you would come up with the number 110, now seeing that Sen. Obama had more than a 110 delegate advantage you could see how Sen. Obama would have still been the winner.

There is no getting past the fact that obama's platform is based on a super liberal base and orientation.

a person who is a moderate conservative would be highly suspicious of someone with this veiw who tries to position himself to appeal to that person. this would indicate somewhat of a dishonest deceiving approach to try to make you believe that obama is someone who he is not or supports something which he really doesn't. hence his "bitter" comments. He is out of touch and this will come out in the general.

the answer to the question of this article is an unequivocal NO!

miamiman wrote: "a person who is a moderate conservative would be highly suspicious of someone with this veiw who tries to position himself to appeal to that person. this would indicate somewhat of a dishonest deceiving approach to try to make you believe that obama is someone who he is not or supports something which he really doesn't."

Please explain what Mr. Obama has done to deceive you. Mr. Obama has been clear on his goals for his presidency and he's voted consistently for those goals since being elected to the Senate. We don't see any flip-flopping from him.

Meanwhile, "Teflon John" has moved from the moderate position that he ran on in 2000, to the neocon position where he currently stands. He's flip-flopped on a number of issues, presumably pandering to GWB's base. So, I ask where's the real deception?

Lastly, your use of the typical pundit labels in reference to Obama is boring and unsubstantiated. In this article, Mr. Romano explained his reasoning on why VA could go blue. Your gross assumptions of the VA demographics no longer apply...

If Hillary isn't on the ticket, Obama will not have a snowball's chance in hell to win in VA. Fairfax and Arlington are liberal as the day is long, BUT - we're also really close to DC, very engulfed in politics (our local news IS national news), and VERY loyal to the Clintons.

If it's not Obama/Clinton, I will, for the first (and hopefully last) time in my life, vote for a Republican. Obama not offering Hillary the VP slot will be the final slap in the face, and it will cause the bottom to fall out of the Democratic Party. And we're the moderate half, so that says something.

do you deny his super liberal orientation? look at his stand on issues(ref newsweek article)

there is no getting over his gaffes when it comes to foriegn policy. he is a major flopper in regards to his "talks" to rogue nations. first : no preconditions next: some preconditions last: defined preconditions. this reflects his need to tell you what you want to hear. my veiw is that of a MODERATE CONSERVATIVE which you may not be so you may not relate to what I am stating.

But Obama does not do too well with both white and Hispanic voters. His white deficit is understandable but why doesn't he do well with a minority group? He lost the PR primay to Hillary by 2:1.

He has a real problem because his deficit with white voters (under 40%) can't be offset simply by an increased turnout of black voters. Hispanics are a Democratic constituency but not as loyal as the blacks are. John Kerry got 41% of the white vote and lost. If Obama doesn't get a higher % of the Hispanic vote than Kerry got to offset his white deficit, then he will lose as well. It's simply a matter of arithmetic.

And in general Democrats don't do too well in presidential races. Q: When was the last time a Democratic candidate for President got a majority (over 50%) of the popular vote? A: Jimmy Carter in 1976. And in 2008, the Democrats are fielding a black candidate with an irate white woman loser on his tail!

To all the people who think Obama will actually win in November, I say, keep on dreaming!

Anyone who says they will vote McCain if Clinton is not on the ticket need to jump in front of a moving car. Seriously, are people going to be that stupid to vote in 4 more years of the same crap? I can't wait to see that happen, then people complain and cry about unemployment, Iran, the economy, and their $10 a gallon gas.

Because all of you will cry.

Electing Obama, with his plans, is essentially electing a variation of Hillary. If you trolls think otherwise, you are the following:

1. Uneducated

2. Ignorant

3. Closed-minded

4. A buyer of fear-mongering

5. A buyer of propaganda

What you all fail to see is this strategy is GENIUS! By making McCain fight hard for states he was practically "guaranteed," he is diverting attention from key battleground states, and because of that, McCain will lose.

Run home to Mommy, you trolls.

However, like with any great strategy, one of the most important elements of a succesful strategy, is the element of secrecy and surprise.Once your opponent can perceive your strategy, he's bound to successfully counter-attack. A clasical case of effective counter-attacked was mounted by Hillary in this primary. Obama preached unity but Hillary countered with divisive politics based racial-baiting,gender,seixism,kitchen sink, etc, etc; and Obama just barely survive.

Upto date, Obama and the Obama campaign haven't figure out how to counter racism and racial-baiting, ethnic ,religious and personal attacks against Obama based on past associations hence,"guilt by associations". Obama's professed best defense was to "trust" the American voters to differentiate between "smear" from "facts". But, overwhelming evidence now abounds to prove that Hillary's successes were largely due to the divisive, gender and racially driven strategy!!!!.

Obama barely survived because largely of his early lead and because Hillary's late and erratic employment of the "divisive strategy".

McCain doesnot suffer from that disadvantage given that they are more or less tied in national polls. The million dollar question isn't whether McCain will borrow and use Hillary playbook; he's already on record for embracing and employing Hillarybook with the arrogance only McCain can muster.Given Obama's inaility to counter-counter attack as saw in his ads, debates and e-mails; Iam very certain McCain will win the politics of division and smear hands down!!!.

VA's vote was totally screwed up. In the DC area, which is CLINTON TERRITORY, an ice storm literally shut down BOTH major highways ENTIRELY. I know people who slept in their cars on the highway that night. It wasn't safe to drive, and it was a total disaster - I almost didn't make it to the polls, and I left straight from work.

Obama/Clinton could win VA, but without our girl on the ticket, it won't happen. Republicans are few and far between that won't admit they would have preferred another Clinton term instead of Bush. VA is also a very moderate state, and many Republicans just aren't voting this year - although Obama may make them want to show up for McCain.

Pandering to the 2nd amendment crowd? Nah, I haven't seen that -- all Obama has done is explain the comment he made and placed it in context. As has always been the case during this and every other campaign, sound bytes are used to make inaccurate judgements on candidates. Obama gave the voters credit for intelligent enough to recognize the difference, rather than resorting to the traditional smears. His strategy obviously worked, since he won the nomination. If you like, we can start comparing Obama sound bytes to McCain sound bytes, but I think that's pretty pointless, don't you..?

I deny and reject the liberal label that pundits, talking heads and others like you still continue to throw around. This issue is boring, stale and ridiculously overused by Republicans. His liberal label is based on a voting record that I fully support. There are 2-3 votes that make him more liberal than the moderate democrats, like Hillary. A quick google seach identifies all of these votes and provides context. Besides all of that, I challenge you to look up liberal in the dictionary and explain to me how that became a derogatory term. Only Republicans consider it an insult. For good measure -- look up conservative afterwards and tell me how that's so much better liberal...

Foreign policy gaffes? I completely disagree. He's been clear and progressively more specific on the issue when questioned. This linked article explains how and why some folks think he's correct -- http://www.slate.com/id/2192940/.

Of course I respect your right to have and to express an opinion -- its one of the things that makes this country great. But, that doesn't mean I have to agree with your opinion -- especially when you make baseless accusations against one candidate, without holding the other candidate accountable to the same standard. Lastly, just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean that I don't have an "objective mind without emotion based responses".

You have to admit that your original post was pretty inflammatory and slanted. Moreover, it was totally off-point to the analysis that Romano made in the article. You didn't challenge any of the data or assumptions used in his article. You simply made a gross generalization of conservative vs. liberal. Then for good measure, you threw in a reference to 10 second sound byte that was taken completely out of context.

Its a reality and there isn't much to do or complaing about. That being said, Obama is a very gifted politician. He will register all kinds of new voters in all 50 states, and will have enough money to keep McCain always chasing after him. However, he needs Hillary on the ticket so he can appeal to blue collar, women, jewish, and latin voters. With Hillary he has pretty good odds. Without her he has pretty poor (though ont impossible) odds. McCain's biggest problem is that in trying to suck up to the base of the republican party, his "maverick" reputation is dimming, and its turning off independents. It is probably too late for him to go back, however, without seeming like a hypocrite

Do any of you really and truly believe that is going to happen? Given the way she behaved on the night when he won the primary, do you believe that Senator Obama or any of his supporters are likely to suggest that she should be the VP?

I am not saying that she doesn't have a tremendous following - (18,000,000) votes - but I am not sure she can be forgiven for the stuff that happened that night. I was terribly embarrassed when Terry McAuliffe came out and introduced her as "The next President of the United States". That was appallingly rude. She and people on her campaign offended a lot of people.

The time has come to put your hurt feelings and disappointments aside and get on the Barack Obama express to the Presidency. If you choose not to do that, you can vote for McCain so we can stay in Irag for lots of years and you can have your phone calls to Paris tapped.

I think the downside of the Clintons offsets any upside we'd get from having her as VP. There are plenty of other Dems who can help Obama and who don't have the downside that the Clintons do. Obama has shown that he's shrewd enough to recognize this.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Hagel as VP. That would send an incredible message of change to the partisanship that we've seen in Washington. Hmmmmm...

Senator Obama,

I have been a very strong supporter of Hillary Clinton for a while now, and am still cooling off, however I've made some realizations in the past couple days of soul searching, and I have some advice (I live in Fairfax County, VA, and know what it will take to win the state I've lived in my whole life).

As passionate as I am, and as angry as I've been the past few months, one thing surfaced this morning on my way to work: My passion was born in 2000, *when I was a sophomore in high school*, because I couldn't stand George W. Bush. I truly feel like my youth has been overshadowed by the terrible decisions he has made, and the effect it had on our society. I've fought in every campaign since, big or small, and even converted my grandparents and father to be Democrats (although they are voting McCain this fall). I owe it to myself to end that party's White House control, however your Vice Presidential candidate is crucial in whether I will vote for you in the fall.

I love the Clintons, and would do anything for them. I trust their decisions, and am close enough to DC to know exactly what's going on. I also know many, many Clinton supporters in Northern VA, many of whom voted for Bush in 2000, and unfortunately many in 2004.

Hillary Clinton, along with Senator Obama, are the two biggest fundraisers in primary history, and both have received more votes than anyone in primary history. Between the two of you, that's almost 10% of the country's population - IN A PRIMARY!

That's exciting.

But the bottom line, and my reason for writing, is that she is the only candidate you should be considering for Vice President. It wasn't divisive politics that drove me to her, it's the passion I've had for her for years and years. She's proven to be a visionary, a true leader, and an inspiration to many. Women make up more than half of the electorate, and they need a victory, too. Having an ethnically mixed candidate AND a woman on a winning ticket will show the true face of America, and that's change I can believe in.

Please have Hillary join you in this race for the White House. It will seal the deal in VA, where I have seen many things change over the course of my upbringing. The people of Virginia vote based on results. We rejected the Republicans and elected Mark Warner because of Jim Gilmore. We elected Democrats into most other high-profile positions because of Mark Warner.

We will vote for a ticket with Hillary on it this year because of the bills she's passed, and her powerful advocacy for what she sees as right. We will vote for a ticket with Hillary on it because we were all more prosperous when Bill Clinton was in office. We are loyal to them.

An ice storm kept more people home on primary day than you could possibly imagine up here. Clinton would've been a lot closer if that hadn't happened.

I know that someone else being selected will cause a huge backlash from the half of the party that voted for her. Beyond that, these are the centrist voters - they've voted both ways, and don't hate McCain.

We all need to do more soul searching, and I'm sure you need to think about everything. That said, I think the choice is crystal clear. She has certainly earned it, and it will be really hard, as a Clinton supporter, to hear any more mudslinging by the Obama supporters. It will be comforting and unifying if we finally hear them start chanting her name alongside yours.

Please unify, and run together. It's your best (and possibly only) shot at winning the White House in November.

Thank You.

Also, Senator Obama was SELECTED by the Super Delegates (like Bush was) and not elected by the majority of the democratic voters; therefore, the Democratic Party reopened the doors for the Electoral College to also SELECT Senator McCain in November.

And that suits me fine.

Senator Obama is an extremely naive individual who gambles with everybody as long as he can get something for himself. He doubts he will win in November, but he does not care as long as he is the nominee.

He is an inexperienced liar, has low level experience, and is not ready to be president. It is a pity that the Super Delegates picked him because they are afraid of the reaction of the black people. Why were they Super Delegates if they did not have the intestinal fortitude to do their job?

And, Senator Obama obtained more delegates because the minority areas where he supposedly won have more representation. He knew this would happen!

Therefore, Senator Obama is an opportunist.

Definitely, the lunatics are in charge of the asylum!

I might vote for Senator Obama in 2012 or 2016 if he is still around. This year, I would have voted for Senator Clinton; today, now, and in November, I will vote for Senator McCain. I have visited US bases in Turkey; I would not mind visiting an Army base or fort in Iraq in a few years.

Respectfully,

Details... details.

He dumped his first Wife Carol Sepp, when she was cripple by car accident, then cheat on her while they still married,Well, could it be because principled politicians such as John McCain joined the dog pack to impeach Bill Clinton for his sexual peccadilloes?

As for the supposed affair thats no ones business except for Vicki Iseman.John McCain and his wives. The invasive prying into Bill Clintons relationship with Monica Lewinsky by the media and Congress was despicable, and this is no better, despite any short-term satisfaction of seeing what comes around go around to bite the Republicans in their collective ass.Problem with McCain is for him to get done his agenda in 2000 of lobbyist and campaign finance fraud all the forces would be against it and they would expose his transgressions we need someone above politics.

Still, I have to say that its laughable to me that anyone could say that John McCain is a more credible choice than Barack Obama based on lying. Go to FactCheck.org and you will find a couple of recent examples of John McCain's mistruths. Jack999 mentions below another example of John McCain's morality below. You can google "Keating Five" to understand more of John McCain's less than noble history. I have a lot of respect for John McCain, the POW and war vet, but John McCain the Senator and Presidential candidate leaves alot to be desired...

Another problematic issue -- Hillary Clinton ran a tremendous campaign and I give her alot of credit for that. She wasn't my choice, but she tried hard and had an incredible amount of support. But, the real truth is that the only way she won the popular vote is if you count Michigan (which Hillary herself said didn't really count back in January) AND you do not count any votes for 4 separate caucuses. Factcheck.org or RealClearPolitics.com both have detailed analyses of this.

Vote for John McCain if that's the candidate you prefer in the GE, but your disparaging comments about Obama are not justified or even explained...
