behind the strenuouse effort to make the second amendment seem meaningless has been a discrimination campaign against fire arms owners in the USA,and Obama is clearly a long time participant in that ! And he's chained to it just as he is chained to a DNC controled Congress which has some incredibly low approval!

McCain is not encumbered by involvement in the discrimination campaign against law abiding Americans gun which control advocates needed to generate it's progress. Obama can not support gun rights without adding a "but" in a sentence from which his meaning changes!

Obama is not part of any discrimination campaign and lies against Americans BUT when it's those jerks who own guns the lies and distrust become an information campaign, you see?

Obama slapped the Tar Baby and he is stuck! If he wants to clean his hands off he will have to oppose discrimination campaigns of all kinds, acrossed the board. When will he get started?

When will the low approval of the Congress under DNC control move up?Obama had better get in the race!

The D.C. gun case will backfire on the right wing. I agree with the decision because it is a right to own a gun. How could one form a milita if it's members didn't have a gun already in their possession?

Getting back to the mouth-breathing righties. They have avocated states rights for a variety of federal laws including abortion. I know D.C. is not a state but the upcoming litigation will attack the right of states to make gun laws thereby undermining the arguement that states have the right to make laws that the fed now makes. of course with this corrupt supreme court (no litmus test my sister's ass) the law is just something to be broken.

The violent criminal has gotten a reprieve for decades threw this scam. And Liberals can still use it to smoke screen their soft-on-criminal's stance, which they "justify" threw waging a discrimination campaign against the American fire arms owner.As if he and she are The Ultimate Criminal!

Not long ago the Clinton Administration was proposing and enacting gun control and a hollow "10 thousand more police on the street" scam, and the States had to act to curb the increacing violence!Fending for themselves!

From Florida to Oregon, the States took action to stiffen penalties against violent criminals---AND PERMIT CITIZENS TO ARM!

It worked!

Strangely,Bloomberg likes to credit the reduction in crime to Mayors (who enacted gun control) and Clinton claims his rediculouse promises reduced crime.So we see how far The Lie can be stretched!

This scam can be continued but it is begining to backfire! More so after this just ruling from the US Supreme Court and legal cases sure to come from this ruling.

An attitude on gun control depends a lot on which end of the gun that you are on when it goes off. We have the untenable problem of the various classes of users of those guns, running from Grandfather teaching grandson to properly use the family gun to slay game in the forest, to a sneering robber about to shoot a cashier for the ten dollars in the cash register. There are many types in between, half of which are dangerous while the other half consists of the people that "the right to hold and bear arms" was written for. This is one of those arguments that will go on forever because law is just not able to be written to deal with it in a satisfactory way to solve the problems of guns in many varied hands.

But, it's sort of like driving on the highway. You just have to trust other drivers coming at you in the opposite lane at highway speeds not to cross over and hit you head on. When it comes to guns, whoever uses them needs to be ultra careful when handling them, and trust that some damn fool won't shoot you with his. If you are dead, it hardly matters whether it was intentional or accidental.

I would be a whole lot madder at driver who crossed over and hit me head on while sending a message on the blackberry, than someone who used a gun prudently and caused harm to no one. I wouldn't have one in my house because there is no need for one, and the accident rate is too great to bother with a useless risk. Since they are legal to possess, I can abide with that, but I worry a lot about them getting into the wrong hands, whether innocent children who think that they are toys, or burglars who use them in crime after stealing them from wherever they might be stored, at home or work.

It is also surprising how many law officers shoot themselves in the leg practicing the fast draw. They are trained to use them. Just ponder how much more dangerous they are in the hands of children who find them and start playing cops and robbers.

Our nation has the 4th highest (for a nation not seeing a civil war) number of murders by guns in the WORLD! You have a right to own guns no one will deny that. But the government has the right to write laws to regulate their use, procurement (that means to obtain), storage, and type of weapons you may own; to protect the lives of your fellow citizens. The second amendment was written allow the formation of militias to protect the frontier and keep the government in line.

The amazing thing is these millerm84 stats look suspiciously like handgun control inc. stats...and 5 out of 9 judges (appearently ) did not accept such "brady" stats and facts! And for good reason!

My biggest problem with this is that it went to the judicial system in the first place. The Bill of rights was originally to protect the people and ensure individual rights. The constitution already gave the government a means to officially have a military. A closer look at the wording in the second ammendment mentions both the right to have a melitia ans specifically declares that the right of individuals to keep and bear arms "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED". Just because the two concepts were in there did not tie it solely to a militia as todays left wingers would twist it to mean. So for a panel of 9 judges to even feel the need to examine the issue after these many years (a couple hundred plus mind you), is in itself an affront to all the Bill of Rights. What is next? If one of the bill of rights can be assaulted, what is to stop someone from going further on the others. Even freedom of speach has to an extent been infringed upon. Any word spoken can now be considered offensive by another party and therefor not politically correct. Suddenly others are up in arms. (I know this isn't the best example but look at Don Imus). The Black community went far into the crazy zone over his "nappy...." comment. Yet he really said nothing compared to black comedians and others. But his "Freedom of speach" was drastically infringed upon by the very people who have done and said worse.....all in the backing of being offended. Now where in the hell does the stupidity stop?

Older/wiser's comments do nothing but perpetuate unsubstantiated "gun Fears". he makes it sound like we want our children to go out and play with real guns. "Children playing with guns" id nothing more than continual fear mongering about an issue and has no merit. He also makes it sound like guns go off by themselves. Or even that gun owners are simply careless and wild....

First off, a properly trained police officer who shoots themselves practicing a "Quick draw" most likely did it on his own, not in a training environment. he was probably showing off or trying to be a "dirty Harry" Properly trained police officers, miitary, FBI, CIA, Diplomatic Security know that even when quick drawing you NEVER put your finger on the trigger until your sights are on target. Therefore those idiots who are doing nothing more than "playing around" should not be a police officer to begin with. When it comes to a draw, everyone properly trained knows that "smooth is fast" and haste will get yourself killed. (yes, I have been through extensive training in this area)

Second, guns do not just arbitrarily go off hurting innocents. Again - your finger has to be on the trigger. There is no such thing as an "Accidental Discharge" The proper term would be "Negligent Discharge". Weapons should always be visually and physically inspected as soon as a person touches them. So for someone to say a firearm went off accidentally when cleaning is a crock of SH@T. The thing went off because the person is an idiot and failed to practice fundamental safety.

For those who do not desire to own a gun, that is their choice and right. But to infringe on others, esp those who grow up with the, serve in the military of Fed government requiring guns, those who hunt to keep meat in their freezers for their family, and even for those who do it as a sport and recreation.... to infringe on their choices is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

If rights to own and bear arms were denied, the only ones who would have them on the streets other than public safety officials would be the CRIMINALS. How safe would you feel then?

The gun issue is dead and I think rightly so. Most of the people who advocate gun contol live in high crime cities. It a noble cause to want to keep guns from criminals. It just wouldn't happen with or without gun control. I think the supremes got it right, I am definitely safer having a gun in my home. i don't plan to shoot anyone but if it's me or a home invader, I'm going to at least have a chance that I wouldn't have otherwise had.

Being for the right to have a gun has been a republican strong point for years and it will continue to be. the Democrats depend on big city voters and have been going along for the ride. Finally the issue is going away and the mouth-breathing right wing wackos can replace this fear with another. This decision will help mcCain some but will in the long run help the Democrats who can agree that it's a constitutional Right.

This will not save mcCain though. His problem is that he's sold his soul to get the far right moronic vote. He's made it crystal clear that he's ready, willing and able to send thousands of young women and men to die in Iraq just to realize his own ambition. He knows the truth and denies it just to please the out of touch faction of the GOP. imagine that willing to murder our soldiers for votes.

Regardless of the outcome in November the GOP is headed for extinction and will be relegated to third party status in just a few election cycles.

No one wants to be in the room with a person who would sacrifice our soldiers in Iraq just to gain the whitehouse.

When the constitution was written the statements made were presumably applicable to citizens - who are presumably pro-America and all it stands for and represents. In light of that idea it should be understood that the right to bear arms should be like the right to vote or be president - you must be a citizen....and born on American soil.

The extensive gun control policies should relate to those who are not from here or transplanted. 'Americans' right to bare arms is fundamental to our sovereignty as an independent nation. And when this right is infringed we (Americans) are denied the ability to defend ourselves and our country from enemies, foreign and domestic (making society dependent on government, no! government should be, and is...in theory, dependent on us) - that is constitutionally incorrect.

The supreme court's responsibility is to protect the rights and freedoms of Americans by defending that very intent of the constitution - not to legislate morality, or to deny rights and freedoms to enrich the power of local authorities who serve at the pleasure and for the people.

The Supreme Court's decision is correct and in keeping with constitutional principle. Bravo.

The intent of that example was not to slander all of the well trained users, apparently including yourself. The point was that pistols themselves are so inherently dangerous that even experts can harm themselves with them. An amateur has less chance with one of them. The rate of error with children is also annual, though I don't know how many. The pistol is found by the kid. He plays with it. It is loaded and it goes off. Hits either him or the kid who is visiting. Always a tragedy. An oft told story. Not everyone keeps them in a safe place and curious kids do find them. Hard to resist proudly showing one to a friend. Some children, uninformed and untrained, do play with them when they are found. It does happen sometimes for the worst.

Law officers and military people need them in their arsenal to combat crime and to win wars. They are still to be handled as if explosive with a short fuse.

I think that you would like to box me into a narrow political category on this. It is the farthest from the truth.

I know guns and I know them well. I have been trained as well as anyone to their use, both in the woods by a kindly and careful father, and by professionals at a later time and place. I am as happy not to need one any longer as I ever was pleased to know their use and nature when it was necessary. What goes with this is the knowledge that I tried to share, that when they exist in plenitude in our society with many of them being in places where safety is in jeopardy, the worst happens, and it is a damned shame. It is a constitutional right to own one. No quarrel there.

I would like to substitute "gun respect, danger included", for what you have called "gun fear". If you think that accidental shootings are "unsubstantiated", then I should send you a subscription to your local newspaper where you will find these events often chronicled. It happens. Bass pro - The definition of 'American' needs to be focused so that the rights and privilages and freedoms of Actual, not naturalized, citizens is not compromised in order to compensate for the those who don't have the love and respect for this country shared among true patriots.

Those 'naturalized' individuals realize their due thru a true commitment to the American ideal in the form of inheritance when their decendents are born on American soil, recieve American benefits and higher education and employment, which will in-turn indeer their past, present and future to the preservation of liberty for all.

I have no disdain for foreiners at all....as a matter of fact I believe it is important to interact with other cultures in order to develop a proper mutual respect.

However, their are rights and privileges that should be exclusive to Americans and should not be discarded under any circumstances in order to protect the nation from itself?

The abandonment of our rigthts and liberties is the situation our enemies want to create.

The accidental injury angle gun control advocates use is to exahdgerate it... like everything else they say!

One pet saw widely covered by the news was a multiple of " 36 times more likely to" shoot a friend or loved one than successfully protect your self from a criminal.

lets do some math here...

Americans successfully DO defend themselves from violent intent, and on the order of 1 to 2 million times per year! I have successfully done so twice in a ten year period!

Using just the lower figure...or half that.. times thirty siix is a staggering death toll exceeding war figures where people intentioonally try to shoot each other!

Obviuosly it is not happening here in the USA. (The shame is no reputable news reporter did the simple math!).

The discrimination campaign against fire arms owners has that very purpose! Don't think! Don't question! Just believe the garbage the gun control advocates feed you! The gun owner is so careless and un-thinking his right have become a threat!

The gun issue is going to be a major component of this campaign season and beyond with land mark suits and direction to restore gun rights to citizens in good standing! Millions of fire arms owners will be donating to fund these suits and the american news media will be reporting these events!

The discrimination campaign will be at it's lowdest and most shrill...also getting more media attention! And perhaps thats the best way for more Americans to see the base and obnoxiouse discrimination it it!

Americans are discusted by discrimiation campaigns.

The only way to have true non-discrimination is to stick to the issues!

Too many politicians see themselves falling behind in the polls, loosing popularity and the weakness of their position exposed so what do they do? Point the finger at the other guy to distract from the real issue!!!!

Democrats want to change the way things are done in Washington and make government about servitude and benefit for all Americans.......republicans want to talk about Rev. Wright like the finality of any discussion concerning him solves any real problem.......and it does!!! It distracts from the disaster their party has created and is a repreive from the difficult questions with obvious answers that leave them wanting.

A true public servant would recognize the potential in American citizens and would let someone else take the wheel since they already hit a curb, pothole, telephone pole and wall.

The next president will have it easy - the current is not a hard act to follow.

The main point of the article was about the District of Columbia gun laws. They were so strict that even law enforcement officers from Maryland or Virgina could not enter the District with a weapon unless they were there on official business. The draconian gun laws were enacted because of a segment of our population that had the highest crime rate in the nation. It was an embarrassment to the country that the Nation's capital looked like a third world slaughterhouse everytime the evening news came on. Even after the gun laws were in place for decades, the murder rate was stunning and is still high compared to the rest of the country. Appearing on a TV panel addressing this subject, Eleanor Holmes Norton blamed the state of Virgina for making guns so available. The reply from another panel member was that the difference in the two populations was that the people in Virginia were indeed buying guns regularly - they just weren't using them to kill other at the prodigious rate for which DC was so well known.

Ever hear of 'self-defense'?

That's why I want one and why I am taking a concealed weapons class with my son.

I have a friend, a doctor, who was working in an urban E,R, and while on his way to work was stopped at a red light. A man attacked the car, yelling to open the door, give him his wallet... the good doctor pulled out his concealled weapon (gun) and the criminal realized he had the 'wrong car' and left.

That's why I want my family protected with a handgun.
