This is my problem with the GOP--

The Republican Party has no African American elected to any national office. Not one Governor, not one Congressman, not one US Senator. It hasn’t for closer to a decade than not and it looks like that fact won’t change after this next election cycle either. And with what is being paraded as an immigration debate by the GOP even more people of color, Hispanics in particular, seem to be being “put in their place” so much so that even Florida Senator Mel Martinez stepped down as RNC general Chairman over the heated immigration rhetoric. Replaced by, you guessed it, a white male.

This is just yet another example the Republican Party fails miserably at. It’s called, minority recruiting. The party’s members seem to be just fine with president Bush being the first president since Warren G. Harding not to meet with the NAACP. With their party’s Presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, voting against celebrating the national holiday we call Dr Martin Luther King Day. The GOP’s big issue today, illegal immigration, seems to be just a smokescreen for hate speech against people of color.

While being conservative or liberal does not denote a skin color, one thing seems to be very clear; conservatives of color are no longer welcome in the party of Lincoln.

Obama was wise not to fall into the trap set by the Republicans concerning public financing. Contrary to what Chris Matthews keeps repeating, Obama never made an unconditional promise to take public financing, and the Republicons have met none of his reasonable conditions.. McCain, who reneged on his own promise to accept public financing during the primaries and may have broken the law in doing so, is in no position to criticize Obama. Not that hypocrisy ever stopped the likes of McCain.

The republicans would have done this whether Obama went with public financing or not. It's what they always do and Obama was wise to foresee it. As McCain rakes in his $70,000 checks and his soft money no limits donations, he shows himself to be exactly what the republicans have shown themselves to be in the past: a candidate who owes his soul to big money special interests. He is surely running for the third Bush term and if America stays asleep and keeps voting against our own economic interests, we can expect more of the same. The top five percent of the country gets richer and richer and the rest of America falls farther and farther behind. Six months ago, Dick Cheney's stock in Halliburton had increased in value by more than 3,000%. He's doing a lot better now.

I took McCain at his word when he said he would play fair and square and just use public money, all the while knowing he has a huge, special interest money machine behind him to advertize and organize for him. He's just not the same guy he was in 2000.

Very nice and insightful piece on the media's darling, McCain. However, should not have this been pointed out to and by the MSM when Obama opted out of public funding? Instead, there was faux outrage and many statements regarding the lack of outside groups being funded to disparage Obama. Looks like he was right and the media was wrong. Mr Ramona what your article doesn't mention is that Obama is raising 28,500 for the DNC as well. Obama raised 6 million a few weeks back at a ethel kennedy's estate in virginia. All the checks there were for 28,500. Obama had a fundraiser in NYC where the checks were for 29,500. Obama has three more fundraisers in NYC this week where the checks will be for 28,500 for the DNC. So you want McCain to give up the advantage of not taking public money for his campaign and also give up not taking money for the RNC. Why aren't you going after Obama for taking the 28,500 for the DNC. Your article doesn't even mention that. That shows your bias which is unacceptable for a journalist. Obama by taking public money will raise twice as much with the DNC as McCain and the RNC. Most biased covered election in the history of our country. The media is taking sides in this election like we are in Russia. Obama and his wife have been on twenty times the magazine covers as McCain. This is what happens when 85 percent of the MSM are registered democrats.

I have to admit - Saveright is right on the balance question. Why is there the assumption Obama will be unable to patch into a similar base of DNC-funded activities? I would think Dem-leaning groups and down-ticket campaigns are also experiencing an upswing in contributions as the party and Democratic candidates seek to ride the Obama "change" wave to victory in the fall at the national, state, and local levels... just as GOP candidates seek to do via McCain.

But what should be mentioned is that the Obama methods of fundraising are proving to be successful in those down-ticket races nationally, and moreso for Democrats than for Republicans. Most GOP voters probably believe - and rightly so - that they will suffer losses in the Congress in the fall elections. So they aren't energized to give to John Kerry's Senate opponent the way Democratic voters will be giving to Mitch McConnell or John Cornyn's opponents. Democratic voters are going "all in" for 2008, and it's not just for Obama.

It was the intelligence of foresight of this move, not any ethical implications, that so enraged Republicans. They aren't used to being outsmarted by Democratic presidential candidates. saveright is wrong. The RNC has always had more access to big money donors. There are a lot more repug billionaires who will pay to keep this corrupt oligarchy in power. The recent move by the Iraqi oil ministry to give no-bid contracts to US oil companies for the exploitation of Iraq's oil for profit underscores this. Their whole "raison d'etre" is to use the military to obtain control of as much oil as possible. Iran is next.

McSame is a part of it all; the fact that the RNC has skirted campaign finance law shows the extent these greedy amoral thugs will go to keep themselves in power.
