I think when you start to decide who will be included in the poll, you start to lose credibility. You need to poll across the spectrum of voters and consistently. You might want to poll them at the same time to ask them if they plan to vote or not. That might give you some information and a clue about how that might impact results. But to go out and find those that intend to vote is a recipe for a false poll.

Have you not yet figures out that the mature, intelligent voters are quietly listening, studying and watching these two candidates and are finally figuring out that Obama is just a liar who already believes he is the president of the United States and that Obama really wants to be the King of the World. This arrogant, egotistical, self centered Obama would be the destruction of American values. He cannot be trusted to be commander in chief. Voters are starting to understand this. McCain has served in the military with great honor, had been a Vietcong prisoner of war for 5 years, has served with intelligence in the Senate for many years, knows foreign and domestic affairs, and can work across party lines if the other party would just also try to work across party lines. This article is dripping with Sarcasm, in a deliberate attempt to discredit the poll. Looks almost like slander to me, Mr. Romano. My question is why the media is so liberal? How do they benefit from pushing the liberal ticket? It is one thing to have a show on the radio where the host is openly republican or liberal, and one can listen to it understanding that fact. But the news organizations are there to give us INFORMATION. It is the only source we have, the only connection with what is really going on. They have real power, and they truly do abuse that power. I would not like it if they pushed for the republican side either. All I want is a news source that gives me information on what is happening in this world, so I can make an unbiased decision when I go to the polls. However, I don't think the media is going to win. I agree with what love234america said: "intelligent voters are quietly listening, studying, and watching these two candidates". We will decide who to vote for in spite of the media. Life is life--the media is just a bunch of flashing images coming out of a little electrical box in our living rooms. The government affects our lives, and we will see to it that the leaders of our government will be the right ones for us, regardless of what the flashing images in our electrical boxes try to pursuade us to believe.

its unbelievable that love 234 america claims obama to be a liar. Mccain has been spewing 1 lie after another in his ads. His whole campaign seems to be focused on his deeply offensive lie that obama wants the troops to lose so he can win the election. I am not an obama fan at all, but if mccain keeps up these tactics, he will lose lots of us independents.The straight talker has disappeared and i swear we are looking at a nasty, vicious Rove campaign tactics. I agree with sherrybb on that one. I don't like flip-floppers, but the way McCain has gone from calling the man an impressive fellow at the NAACP to now questioning his patriotism by saying he would rather lose a war to win an election, that is beyond hypocrisy. It is just dishonorable, really.

I wouldn't be surprised if McCain ends up not being the nominee. He's been quite a train wreck.

Sure he served honorably as a POW (what ever "honorably" means in that context). Before (in school) and after (in his marriage and in the Senate) - uh, not so honorable. Not a great student, cheating on his disabled wife, censured for Keating 5, has taken so many different positions even he can't keep them straight.

Obama's character is beyond reproach. He is intelligent, reflective, and an excellent strategist. He listens to other points-of-view and makes the best decision - regardless of which "side" it may come from. In the figurative sense, Obama plays chess, McCain is throwing darts. McCain's ad slamming Obama and the troops is a flat-out lie and so low it's hard to believe McCain "approved" that message.

Let's take back this country. Do some research, put your skepticism and preconceptions aside and really look at BOTH candidates. There is truly no contest.

Anyone with even a foggy idea of what's been going on for the last 8 years; the lies, deceit, National Debt, terrible economy, reckless spending, an endless trumped-up war there can be no choice in this November's election...McCain is a Bush clone. These polls are garbage and must be taken very lightly. If this Country is allowed to go down the tubes (the plan of the current Administration) then the fault must lie upon the voters. The only person who can lead us and get the U.S. back on track and clean us of the shame that's been the seal of Mr. Bush, is Obama! Well, most of us have already known that John McCain was winning. If you go around the internet and listen to what people have to say you will see that very few people are FOR Obama. Of course you would not know that from listening to the biased news media.

Polls can be manipulated and there is no doubt in my mind that they have been being manipulated in Obama's favor!

It will become increasingly more apparent as time goes along that McCain will be winning come November.

The poll is only a rarity in that the liberal biased media actually chose to publish it! If you listen to the main stream "in the tank for Obama" media, you'll never hear of this poll nor the many others that exist that suggest McCain is actually ahead! Don't get me wrong, although I'm definitely conservative I don't really support McCain's liberal policies. It's obvious that he's the lesser of two evils in keeping us from becoming a socialist state.

Well if popular vote was a a real topic we would not be in Iraq Al Gore would have at least had a three year term and handled 9/11 ... But your living in a dream world. The next president does snot have to win the popular vote, He has to win a state. Like in Florida the same year that Al Gore won the popular vote. GW Bush won Florida and I think we know the rest from there.

Once again it will come down to a couple states. The people in the rcok hard red states know who they are and will only go to one person. Like most conservatives in Orange County Calif know. Do yor really think Rock Hard Blue State is going to turn RED? Is Alabama Going to Turn Blue? Do all the polls you want but your sheep are not ging to market your just trying to get a news story. The truth is/ FLORIDA, and OHIO and MAYBE TEXAS will be the ones at the end making the final decision and how did Obama do in those states? Actually this same Gallup/USA today poll had a slightly larger registered voter sample that has Obama leading 47-44, which wasn't noted in this article (so much for liberal media bias). By dropping 16% of Obama registered voters via the likely voter screen, with such 'unlikely' voters including first time registrants, and only 2% of McCain's registered voters, you end up with - shazam! - a 49-45% McCain lead. In other words, the Gallup likely voter model decided that Obama voters were eight times more likely than McCain voters not to show up at the polls. A

As one said, just listen to the public - this is a close race in terms of the popular vote - with no clear leader. Since he president is an Electoral College vote, McCain would be leaing. Why doesn't the media pick up on that fact. Simply poll the guys with "guns and boats" to see who is leading and most likely to win in November.

This race will be won or lost in Ohio and PA.

America wants CHANGE and that is what 90% of Americans are going to end up with. I cannot say that I am overly impressed with John McCain, but as we are in the cycle of choosing the lesser of evils, I am certain that come "crunch-time" in November that he WILL be our next president.

Yes, Obama is charasmatic. However, I contend that he is not his own man, but is in fact a product of a long planned strategy of social democrats deeply rooted in Illinois. He was groomed by Dick (the Dick) Durbin in the first 90 days of his Senate election for this purpose. Barack Obama is intelligent, and was chosen precisely for his clean slate. George Soros backs him.

However, going on vacation to Europe to make nice with heads of state who may, or may not (read: may not !!) be interested in USA's best interest is...well unimpressive. I just don't believe in the social democrat agenda, and it's big government solutions. We hear "Change" but his record is too short to guess how that will be achieved. I say he is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

He's black...OK. He's got a musilim name...OK. ( though he is NOT a muslim). The greatest deffinition of what he is... is what he is not: namely he is not George Bush.

John McCain is NOT charismatic, and is the opposite in "popularity" with the young and GREEN youth of America. However, the truth is not always popular, and in fact rarely is.

I consider my self to be neither a Republican or a Democrate, this is easy to see by my voting record. I must say I am taken back by the favoritism shown to Senator Obama by articles such as the one above. I find it insulting to ridicle one of the polls because it shows McCain in the lead. It appears that if Senetor Obama has a good report it is hyped up in the positive, if McCain has a favorible showing, the headline or article is a putting him down. What I want is real journalism, the facts about the canidates and what is happening. The Knighthood of Obama by the press is driving people like me way from Obama, the press seenss so bias. Right now, I'd vote for McCain as I know who is; the press has built a fairy tale prince out of Senator Obama, I want to know who he really is. One question I want answered is , ".How has Senator Obama made life better for the people he represents in the Senate? I want past history of him.

I will never forget the Conservative, Republican suporter - Preacher in a local church. He stood at the door of the church to prevent a Grandmother from bringing her mixed race granddaughter into the church. The Grandmother was Christian enough to take responsibility for her granddaughter. It is a shame that this preacher wasn't.

I have also noticed that most of the conservative christian, republican suporters are biggots and racists. A large number of these people are not interested in any other issue other than race in the next election. Exit poles confirm that. Blacks and Hispanics who don't vote for Obama will deserve what they get. Working men and woman - people on the bottom rung of society will also deserve what they get.

Mr. Romano has written a highly irresponsible article, and then goes on to label it with a misleading title. The title implies that there are multiple "polls" indicating a McCain lead among registered voters. That is simply not the case. There is only one such poll - USAT/Gallup. Furthermore, it would appear that USAT/Gallup is an outlier. The most recent Research 2000, Rasmussen tracking, Gallup tracking and Newsweek polls all suggest that Obama is statistically ahead and that he got a slight bounce from the trip.

This article is yet another illustration of the MSM media's willingness to fabricate facts and data to support the viability of the McCain campaign. This may work in the short term. Yet, the fundamentals of this race are becoming increasingly clear. Obama is a disciplined and very inspiring candidate. McCain is a fundamentally flawed candidate in that he is tremendously undisciplined and even somewhat unbalanced at times. It's only a matter of time before Obama put this one away. That will be a said day for Mr. Romano and the rest of the MSM punditry class.

I am an independent voter and usually split between the Republican and Democratic candidates for each office. I am a veteran of the Air Force as well. I have listened to what both Obama and McCain have to offer. There are things that really trouble me about Obama. Things that I haven't seen via video or a mailing from a conservative or Republican organization. These are things that I have seen Obama say and do himself. I saw the Obama pastor Wright and the hate and venom he preached to Obama for over 20 years. I have seen an interview with Obama when he called his grandmother on his mother's side A TYPICAL WHITE PERSON IN THE WAY THAT SHE ACTS. I saw the video on the news about Obama and the other Democratic presidential candidates in their response to the National Athem. There are Hillary and Richardson with their hands over their hearts and looking up at the flag and there stands Obama looking down and away with his hands clasped together in front of him. That to me as a veteran is the ultimate disrespect for the flag and my country. I have seen the interview with him saying that he refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance or wear the American Flag pin on his lapel. He said I WILL NOT WEAR THAT PIN---THAT PIN just like it was nothing!! I have seen his wife say that for the first time in her adult life she is now proud of her country. I have seen where Obama talked about black liberation theology in his teachings. For you that don't know what black liberation theology is-it is a brand of Malcolm X type belief where black people have to get equality and freedoms BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. Also it has a thing about gods-white gods and black gods and that there can only be black gods and all other gods must be killed. I am not a racist by any means and many in my ancestry have fought for civil rights by all, but I decided to look into this black liberation theology and look at Cole's books that he had written and it scared me alot. Could you imagine a white candidate Republican or Democrat-especially Republican saying that Obama ACTS LIKE A TYPICAL BLACK PERSON?-his or her political career would be over. I don't care for John McCain, never have, but when it comes to election time I may be pulling the lever for McCain because the alternative scares me too much. Also from what I have seen and heard from Obama and his wife, they don't like white people at all and will put all of their effort in the advancement of black America at the expense of all other Americans.

I understand partisan-induced bias, but what's with the bias against math?

As Gallup makes clear, there's a margin of error of +/- 4 points with this poll. When a lead isn't within the margin of error, it's not really a lead. That goes for whether you're a Republican, Democrat, or whatever.

So I'd be more impressed with the political analysis in articles like these if it included a rudimentary explanation for how to interpret poll results.

A lead that doesn't exceed the margin of error is not a lead, no matter whether it supports or detracts from your personal bias.

McCain could well be ahead because of the public's hesitation to say they intend to vote against Obama. They may say undecided when they are not or that they wil vote for him when they won't. The issue boils down to filling my car with gas. I have been a Democrat for 40 years and will not be voting that way this time. The Democrats have control of Congress and have made NO SENSIBLE ATTEMP to get the price of gas down and from what Nancy Pelosi says... then have no intention of letting drilling for oil to come to the floor of the House for a vote.

Drilling for oil here just makes sense no matter what the price per barrel is. It provides plenty of good paying jobs for AMERICAN WORKERS. Increasing our own production increses our securtiy. Increasing oil production here will go a long way in balancing our trade deficet. Why cannot the Democratic leadership not see those facts. Maybe they have been paid not to.

Its time our country was put ahead of party politics and I find the Democratic Party, my party, to be the most at fault for not providing the leadership they promised when we gave them control of both houses of Congress.

I apologize for the tone of my post, because I do long for a color blind nation. No, I do not subscribe to Jeremiah Wright black liberation theology. Yet, I know there are millions of white folks who have gone to church for decades that overtly and subtly promoted racist theology. Can you deny that the 11 oclock hour on Sunday morning is still the most segregated time of the week in America?

Only in the very recent past have the various denominations of white churches began to apologize for standing by while America, particularly the Southern states pursued their racist agenda.

What's really interesting is that the Republican party(which I wrote to in 1988 - 20 years ago) seems so disinterested in courting black voters. I HAVE NEVER HEARD A REPUBLICAN ADVERTISMENT ON BLACK RADIO STATIONS - NEVER. As a general proposition, stereotype if you must, black folks oppose abortion and gay marriage, yet how many black Republicans are running for office in this year's election. It does not make sense. The Republican party has actively sought Hispanic voters but I guess black people are just not worth the effort. Go figure.

And just so you know, I vote candidates, not parties. I voted for elder George but not the lame brain son, the "decider." I have voted for other Republican candidates, judges, senator and some representatives, at the state and federal level. Why? Because there positions appealed to me.

But I will be darned if I stand by and listen to the likes of some folks tar and feather Obama. He may not win but if he does not, I certainly hope it is not because of his race. I have sense enough to know that all of the candidates were qualified to this lead nation. To be sure, as I write this, I am not sure who I am voting for come November -- I want to see the debates. But I do know that Barack Obama has paid his dues -- he did what white America has asked -- he studied hard and made a way for himself. To have folks come along and try and malign him because of his name and his race is a poor excuse to dismiss him.

Finally, Jessie "Baby Daddy" Jackson and Al "Tawana Brawley" Sharpton don't speak for me. I hope Hush Rush, Bill O"Fool and Sean Insanity don't speak for you either!!!

I am extremely dissapointed in our current domestic situation as well as our global one. All I can say is in the world of today and now. I want a strong President one who understands that words will not stop Iran from developing Nukes and useing them. I do not want to have to build a bomb shelter because we have a President who is too weak to resort to bombing Nuke sites in Iran.

I believe that McCain is more experienced in politics and definately has a greater understanding of our armed forces. He is the best qualified candidate for the Presidency out of what we have. Thats how I feel and all the media and debates will not change my thoughts.

I had a good time chatting with you all and God Bless America for that is why we became great and will continue to be great. In our illustrious history we have had many hard times this isnt nothing compared to some of the ones in the past, fyi.

Can I say that whomever posts that people born on military bases are not U.S citizen should check their sources? My father was in the Army and on a couple of occasions served overseas and during one such tour my parents gave birth to my little brother. I am proud to say that even though he was born abroad he is still a bonafide U.S. citizen. I can say this because any U.S. military base is considered U.S. soil in the eyes of this great nation. I would like to say that being a conservative, I was one of the first people scratching my head about McCain's nomination. That being said I believe he is the better man for the job. I cannot imagine what this country would be like if we have someone in the seat who wants to completely disregard the opinions of his joint chiefs as well as those generals serving in Iraq and Afganistan. Please for the sake of this country and the many who live in these poor countries, Mr. Obama, reconsider your stance on this subject.

I am a 50 something TYPICAL white, grandmother who is mortified by some of the misinformed comments I've read tonight on this blog. I'm also a newby, as I've never responded to one of these before. I just can't stand to sit back and let some fine Americans go forward believing the misinformation that's being spread. I am so fearful that we'll miss the opportunity to truly make improvements in American. In the 2008 Democratic Primary, news story after story read “Why can’t Barack Obama Close the Deal?”, “Why is Obama Leading by Only 3 Points?”. Headlines like these have carried over into the General Election. This story does not stray from the “What’s wrong with Obama?” story line. These stories are reported as if Barack Obama’s victory will be genuine only if he wins by first-round knock-out.

The reason this race appears to be so close is because 1. The so-called love affair that the news media has with Barack Obama consists of equal parts of both negative and positive coverage; 2. John McCain is being allowed to run a negative-spin, character-assassination campaign without commensurate media and public outrage; 3. Early opinion polls are wild guesstimates; 4. The media wants it to be close; and 5. Change does not come easy.

Vision, gifted statesmanship, charisma, excitement, energy, remarkable intelligence and phenomenal leadership skills are qualities that most of the world and a majority of U.S. citizens see in Barack Obama. Yet, the McCain-Bush campaign has decided to revolve its entire campaign around convincing voters that Barack Obama a terrorist, traitor, racist, rookie, Nazi, arrogant, presumptuous, flip-flopper, injured-troop hater, and anything else to detract from the phenomenon.

During Obama’s world tour, John McCain launched the “criticize Obama’s every word” tactic. The news media is just beginning to report how low-down John McCain has become. It would seem that John McCain’s continual nit-picking would distract him from concentrating on his own strategy – unless nit-picking is his strategy! The Maverick could use his time more constructively by rejecting Karl-Rove-hit-man tactics and coming up with an original thought of his own.

If the negative-spin and character-assassination tactics were only a small component of the McCain-Bush campaign, then it could be forgiven as being politics as usual. Unfortunately, these tactics comprise the entire strategy of the McCain-Bush campaign. If this kamikaze strategy is exposed for what it is, then Barack Obama’s lead will grow by leaps and bounds.

Sure is lot of hot air around here. So many talking points. So many minds already made up. So many ad hominem attacks.

So, my take:

You can call the MSM liberal or the opposite. Who owns it? Hint: It's not a "mom and pop" operation. How do the people who own it vote? Do some research.

Andrew Romano had to write something that will sell Newsweek. Pure and simple. Next week it will be something different.

I hope all of y'all vote (judging by some of the writing i wonder how many of you are old enough to vote). Pay attention to what your representatives and senators do. Pay attention to what the national parties do. When "there's not a dime's worth of difference" VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT!

That's all that citizens can do.

I don't really like either candidate that much but I hate, really hate, what has happened to America over the past seven and a half years. We have had a Republican president for all of that time and a Republican congress for most of that time. The Democrats aren't much better but they get my nod this time. If they take the White House and keep Congress I'll give them two years to show some improvement in what's happening in our country. If it's just more of the same old same old, I'll vote against the Democrats.

Meanwhile, I hope you, my fellow citizens, start finding common ground about the things we all want, because there are things we all want. Just reading these letters it's easy to see how polarized we are. We're being manipulated by the powers that be. Washington is controlled, not by the voters but by the money. There are Democrats who are DINO's, Democrats In Name Only. They have voted what Bush asked for again and again. They are FOR SALE, just like many Republicans are. That's why the Will Of The People has been thwarted for so many years.

It doesn't matter if McCain wins or Obama wins if we don't FOLLOW THE MONEY and vote against it.

ProPsych~ I can tell that I know many of our service members who have served in Iraq. They will tell you 99.99 percent of the time the main stream media doesn't not tell you the truth about the situation in Iraq. This is the same media who sings the praises of Senator Obama and often opposes those who aren't liberal. I prefer to get my news from all sources and make my own judgment. Being from Arizona, I can wholeheartedly say the John Mc Cain has done absolutely nothing for our state and nothing for the nation unless it fit into his own personal agenda. The work horse of our state has been our Democratic Governor, Janet Napolitano.

It should be obvious to the rest of the country what an out of touch, short-tempered, wolf in sheeps clothing Mc Cain is when his rival outraises him in funds in his home state.

Can we realistically believe that a man of his age (Yes, I pulled the age trump card) can really run a country in the shape it is in? He is lagging in astuteness, energy, and has admitted to not knowing much about economics. Can a man with a billionaire for a wife really relate to the mortgage crisis, rising health care costs, skyrocketing fuel and food costs? Wasn't this what the Republicans based their arguments on in the previous election with John Kerry?

Take it from someone who has Mc Cain representing her home state- Vote for Obama!

Also: a lot of readers have remarked on my "sarcasm" in the opening paragraphs. Just to be clear, I was mocking how the media is responding to results--with shock!--not responding that way myself.

The "media" apparently is defined by Andrew Romano, at least in part, as polling organizations who interview people and try to use standards of representation to report their results. The other "media" on which Romano throws his "sarcasm" (his quotes) are members of the McCain campaign organization.

As I understand it, the " media" lumps in print and television news and opinion priodicals as that vague body of news people. I got that understanding through 40 years as a print newsman myself. Campaign organizations are clear advocates of a particular side and are not held to impartial standards.

No one can predict how this campaign will turn out or whether the Gallop results will hold. But one thing I can predict with reasonable confidence: There will be more Andrew Romanos out there after hearing things they don't like.

My husband and I are basing our vote in November on pure and simple issues. I applaud those who voted for Obama, they took a crucial step in history. They showed the world that we do accept all sorts to run for one of the highest honors in our nation. I am of hispanic descent and have no problems with color. That being said I personally do not feel that he is quite qualified to run our country. I would vote for General Colin Powell. I had the great honor of hearing him speak at a conference last year and can tell you that if I could write in a vote and make it count I would most certainly be proud and honored to call him President.

Here is what I think:

There are a great deal of people who depend on the news to make a living. That is why we see so many things which look like "News" but really aren't. It is kind of like the new phenomenon of hyping the weather. " There is a big storm coming," (as if "The Day After Tomorrow" is on it's way,) details at 11:00. I always think if it's that important, why make us wait until 11?

This article is case and point: Make a story when there isn't one.

Barak Obama is ahead in every poll. He just came back from an international trip where he appeard presidental in every capacity. (Much more so that Bush, giving Angela Merkel a suprise backrub. How charming.) Obama was articulate, intelligent and someone who we should be proud to have as a representiative of America. (Much unlike our current buffoon, his Dark Lord and the other unqualified people in the administration who have no skills, but were hired on the basis of their "Loyalty to the President." )

Whoever wins the presidency will be faced with a the biggest budget deficit in history, a war of choice, which was a bad idea, as well as a host of economic problems. The new president is also going to have to explain why we torture and hold people without due process. The entire world laughs at us for electing GWB. We have no credibility. Unfortuately, the thing republicans have the most success with is getting people to vote against their own best interests.

Suffice to say that CONSERVATIVE POLICIES ARE FAILURES.

All you people talking about The National Anthem or lapel pins or The Pledge of Allegiance should stop feeling so foolishly patriotic for a minute and Think...

All those things REPRESENT America. They are not America. YOU are America. You are just as much a part of America as your neighbor and John Roberts. The decisions our leaders make affect YOU.

You should have a union with coletive bargaining and job protection.

You should make a decent living wage for what you do.

You should be able to afford to go to the doctor.

When you buy a toy at the store it should be safe.

Food you eat shouldn't be contaminated.

You should not be considered a second class citizen because you are poor, a member of a minority, a woman, a immigrant or anything else.

There should be a paved road in front of you house that someone plows in the winter.

The mail should be in you box every day.

GOVERMENT COLLECTS MONEY AND IS SUPPOSED TO PROVE SERVICES. They aren't going to stop collecting money. They have to grow and change with the times, just like businesses do.

The whole notion of "Governent IS the problem" is crap. Government is REQUIRED to do these things. Cutting taxes and cutting services while spending hundreds of millions of dollars A DAY on a war of choice which has been managed by a bunch of "Republican Loyalists" is absurd.

Isn't it sad when you ask yourself "Who benefitted the most from the Iraq war?" It certainly wasn't you or me...I don't the the starving refugees of Iraq are too happy either.

Think about that. Who got the most benefit from OUR billions of dollars?

Conservative believe that life was perfect in the 50s, before the hippies ruined everything. Unfortunately, life was perfect in the 50s ONLY if you were a white male. "Leave it to Beaver" doesn't exist, and it never really did. The 50s was more like "Rebel Without a Cause."

To wrap things up....Barak Obama is going to win. Get used to it. While he was touring the world, John McCain (Who I really do like,) was have sausage at a resturant in Ohio. Gallup released a poll earlier today Obama had a 9 point lead. His biggest lead. A few HOURS later, he's trailing McCain? You can't be serious. IF the Republicans, and the "powers" that be try to steal this election, thet're going to have a lot of trouble on they're hands. Why doesn't Newsweek conduct it's own poll among ALL demographic groups, with detailed data, and see if they have the same results. If it sound's unbelievable, that's because it probably is.

My problem with voting for Obama is not only his lack of experience but that we are cultivating a behavior that is all too willing to forgive him for whatever gaffe he may have said, do, or any of the position he's taken. We have found in him a perfect solution, and a quick fix to our woes. This willingness to overlook any flaws might be to our own peril. If we decide that he leads this country and he takes us in the wrong direction, are we willing to let it slide or can we let ourselves be "unkind" to Obama and rein him in?

As for race, I can't for the life of me understand why he's called African American when he is just as much white as he is black. Can you call him a racist for rejecting his mother's race? Or is it another ploy to win the election as the first black president. Why not the first bi-racial president? What makes his black more potent than his white. I have bi-racial children. I celebrat both parts of my children equally. I don't see Obama practicing that especially when it's his white family that raised him. Am I the only one raising this issue?

Ah, Andrew is in love with the narrative over the facts, and now Gallup/USA Today show that it's more important to be talked about than to be factually correct.

The Gallup poll result favoring McCain is absolutely absurd. To assume that only 84% of Obama supporters will vote and 98% of McCain suppporters will vote is to deliberately tip the balance in favor of a result that will get headlines because no one expects it. And why does no one expect it? Because it is not possible. That's American journalism today - chasing stories that are plainly wrong because it's more exciting to be ridiculous.

That is why Obama, good as he is, smarter than McCain, more principled than McCain, stays quiet and registers as many voters as possible. There never will be an honest debate in this press. He needs to ignore the liars and sensationalists in the press (Newsweek hired KARL ROVE?) and focus on getting everyone a ride to the polls.

The only poll numbers I really want to see are the ones that count. Who cares if Obama or McCain are ahead in these polls they don't actually represent the voters. I know that I have never been polled as a registered voter in any poll. I guarantee they skew the polls to stir up conversations such as these so they may sell more copies of their papers. Here we go again: Obama a "muslim"! And what is John McCain? He is a non-muslim! What John McCain personifies could be observed in Colorado on Friday, July 25, when McCain, the non-muslim, had a private 45-minute meeting with the Dalai Lama, his Tibetan spiritual leader and Buddhist priest.

Afterwards both made an improvised press conference outside of McCain's home. The Buddhist leader declared that their meeting was non political but private. He took the right hand of John McCain and patted it repeatedly (that's the way Buddhists do it). So both non-muslims hold their hands while the Buddhist monk spoke and John McCain seemed spiritually smiling. Finally McCain removed his hand, put it to his heart and said to the Buddhist semi-god: THANK YOU YOUR HOLINESS.

This surely was a moving moment: to see how John McCain, the next president of the United States, confessed his Buddhist religion in public.

That should be Ok for everybody. No problem for muslims and non-muslims and for the Republican candidate. But what about his hypocrisy? The war mongers and Republicans who hate Barack Obama because he is a Christian (and had a muslim father) should think twice about their own hypocrisy.

The same people praise this feeble-minded John McCain who is confessing his Buddhism and obviously is a great hypocrite who left his wife when she was disabled.

But what is more troubling: Every time McCain opens his mouth he proves that he is ignorant and has nothing to say. He just wants to be endorsed by Buddhists, evangelical Christians and every faith on earth to get elected President. That''s hypocrisy !

Interesting comments today. I'm glad that as a registered independent I get to chose my candidate without being "tied" to any party. My wife has been a registered democrat her entire life. During a recent discussion we had, she informed me she would not be voting for obama. During the conversation she stated one of the reasons was that obama did not have enough political experience to run this country

You are now my favorite member of the MSM. Haven't watched a stitch of news since Russert died (partially because I had a fetish for his style of reporting and partially because I needed a break from primary coverage) but your piece really hit the right notes.

OK. Enough apple polishing.

I think that you know as well as I do that the magic words w/r/t the discrepancy of these two polls is this: cell phones and new voters.

George W. Bush won in 2004 because of the turnout of 23M evangelical voters. And also because many traditional Dems (e.g. union workers) either didn't show up or cast a "values vote" the other way. I think that people see this current election for what it really is: a bunch of pirates beholden to the military industrial complex and/or pretend Jesus freaks simply pretending to me interested in the well-being of middle America.

We're not as stupid as the media thinks we are. There are many new voters who have been energized for the first time by Barack Obama--and they're going to do much more than just showing up to the polls on election day. There are also a slew of folks who haven't been polled because (a) they have cell phones and (b) they have never voted before.

I appreciate your analysis. It's easy to just report poll numbers & rare to find someone willing to go above and beyond the results.

I must say, You are a waste of my/our time. Do we prefer a president that acts tough and doesnt take the time to understand things? Who are you talking about. John McCain fought in the war, he was shot down and held captive. He acts tough.. Can you withstand a quarter of what he went through... Obama says things he can back up.. Name one! What does he have to back up, he is in no position to back anything up, he is not our president (and never will be) what can he back up. He can't even back up his comment on his visit to all 60 states.. Yeah I want him as president....

Obama uses flattery to pursuade you to believe a platform that is overwhelmingly socialist. Now if you think socialism will be good for us, or a socialist tendency in America would be beneficial economically or in any other way, than Obama is your man. But I think we should be looking at socialism. The track record for socialism is--it never has worked. Zero for however many times it has been tried. I don't believe that Mccain is a man who is 100 percent fit for the white house, but I would prefer to maintain a democracy and cope with him for 4 years than to lose everything our country stands for and fall to a socialistic government. Universal healthcare sounds heroic, but have you seen the economic results? We cannot afford it as a country. Besides that, the quality of healthcare plummets under Obama's system. To quote from a good movie, "[obama], I just don't know how well this plan was thought through." If you ask me, Obama has a big head, but little arms, or rather a big mouth willing to promise alot of things that he just cannot follow through with, just to get himself elected. The voice of the people will sound in favor of keeping our democracy in tact.

When McCain ran in the primaries for president back in 2000, he came to my high school and had a town hall meeting. I got to hear and see first hand what he was all about. When asked about his experience being a POW, he recalled a few things he had endured. I do not remember what he said because I was more fixed to his emotion. He had the look of someone who endured great physical torture and was able to grow from it. What can Obama say he did for this country? McCain already showed he would pay the ultimate sacrifice for this country. He understands the military and while that is not my ultimate deciding factor it is crucial as war is prevailent.

Had the poll gone in favor of Obama, none in the media, yourself included, would have questioned its validity or found the need to use sarcasm to explain it away. No, had it gone in favor of the Press anointed Savior of the World, you would have lauded it as a precursor of things to come and very bad news for McCain. The problem? It said something that you did not believe was accurate. Liberals, and the Press is liberal, are always in a state of disbelief when they and their ideas are rejected. Point in case: Conservative talk radio hosts, name anyone you would like, are highly successful on air with no help. Every liberal station or program that has tried to get off ground has failed. Every time it does they make excuses, blame conservatives, because it "certainly cannot be that the American people disagree with us!" Surprise, they do. So the answer? Pass legislation forcing radio stations to air an equal amount of liberals that no one wants to listen to in the first place. Sure, the Democrat controlled congress can pass such legislation, but the real question is, will it change the result, meaning, will more people listen to liberals just because their views are forced on us through legislation? The answer is no because we will simply turn the channel to our favorite conservative talk show host. You don't understand this poll result because you just don't understand that your views, whatever you have convinced yourself, are NOT mainstream. People say they will vote for Obama because they do not want to be labeled racist by racist Jess Jackson or the impowerers in the media, so they say what you want to hear. Come November you will be analyzing in horror how it is that you lost another election that, on paper, was impossible to lose. You will continue to make the usual excuses because you would otherwise have to accept the truth, the truth that no one actually cares what you think or say.

All I can say it that I honor your service. My Dad was in the navy and then the National Guard for 25 years!

I try not to attach "conservative" or "republican" to things I post, but it comes out as I write. I guess I could just say that I am against their concept of government. I don't believe it is effective.

I can honestly say that I am also concerned about Obama's lack of experience. I hope he is smart enough to surround himself with people who are brave enough to disagree and guide him in the right direction. I think that that really is the job of the president, to listen to all your experts and make the call.

Experience didn't seem to do GWB much good. I liked his Dad, who seemed to have more of an understanding of how the world worked. It appears that Dick Cheney's experience taught him to be ruthless at all costs, to look at those who disagree as enemies, and to surround himself only with people who were willing to carry out his plan. His plays with Guantanamo, (going around Colin Powell) torture, spying and being VP in secret made him literally dangerous to the country.

My point is that experience didn't do them any good. Obama seems to be young enough to learn. I hope..

I'm one of those Independents that really enjoys life more when the economy is humming along, the world is at peace and we're not occupying countries in the middle-east where people enjoy blowing themselves up while saying hello and no one is listening in on my phone calls...where we don't torture others and where our leaders don't suggest that we take the most beautiful natural coastlines of our country and set up oil rigs to infest the land. Get my drift here? I'm a thoughtful peace loving guy who likes making money and loving my family...and my country- right I'm NOT a Republican like John McCain and George W Bush! How the hell is it that any of this can be happening? For eight years I've been operating between frustration and outright depression over how screwed up Republicans and this administration have made America w/ their sick, sad tactics and NOW you say JOHN W McBUSH is ahead in the polls!? How awful. What is wrong w/ you people- who wants to vote for this old, offensive, Bush loving, swift boater- WHO? I guess the better question is why? In 2000 when W. Bush used disgusting and offensive ads against McCain to whoop him, I guess Old McCain was paying attention. Every week his insults and lies directed at Senator Obama become more and more off the charts- ruder- more personal and more untrue and this is what apparently impresses so many Americans? During a recent discussion with my wife, she stated she would NOT vote for obama. I asked her reasons and number one, she stated he did not have enough political experience and not enough foreign knowledge to become president. Also was the fact that as a member of congress he had very little knowledge of "world politics". When he went overseas as a member of congress to learn and listen, he choose to make comments to foreign leaders against our current administration. Also she became upset with the fact that obama saw fit to make himself known as the next president. She stated he was campaigning in europe and those people can't vote for him anyway. The point was that he didn't really have an idea about the U.S. and tried to make himself look good to foreigners. She also stated that obama said he has different ideas but every thing he does is like the clintons and she will not vote for him. Interesting for me to listen to an educated business person who is a registerd democrat.

I think you're probably right. I am a disgruntled conservative (in other words, I currently don't HAVE a party representing me -- most of the Republicans today are to the left of JFK) -- needless to say, I am not a fan of either Bush or McCain. So I am not motivated to vote FOR anyone in the upcoming election. However, the more Obama gets out there and shows his substantial ignorance about everything from economics to foreign relations, the more likely I am to show up to vote against him.

Obama's European a$$-kissing tour, and the fact that he introduced a bill to tax Americans and send the money TO OTHER COUNTRIES should be frightening to every American. But of course his policies, real and presumed, make him the darling of other countries like Germany, who have resented having to live in America's shadow since before the cold war.

I'm sure Obama would win if Europeans were the ones electing our President. Guess what, fellow Americans? Europeans have their best interests at heart, not ours. They want America weaker, and Obama is their candidate. What does that tell you?

O talked about America and the nations of Europe coming together to fight terrorism, global warming and the US economic problem. It was almost as if he was apoligizing for the bad behavior of GWB. You should have seen it. I don't usually watch that kind of thing, but it was really inspiring.

Did you know that privitizing Social Security would bring 3 trillion dollars to the investment market every year that they could invest and charge fees on? Who was the intended benificary of that deal?

I wouldn't be surprised if they worked the numbers on National Health Care again, just like they did 16 years ago and decide that it wont be feasible. The posts about a socialist US irritate me.

The current regime spent all the money on what?

Why not spend some here....?

Energy Independence.

Infrastructure.

Schools.

Police.

Voting problems.

Drug Use/Alcoholism

Did the really think we'd buy the idea of spreading freedomat $4000 a minute?

The reason those of use above 40 (I am 49) will go out in droves, hold our noses, and vote for McCain, is because of those who want Obama in power as much as Obama himself. My son, my third don and namesake, is a United States Marine, a Corporal, serving honorably in Iraq. I received an email from members of two online forums dominated by the under-30 crowd, www.styleforum.net and www.askandyaboutclothes.com. One of their members, a member in "good standing" to this day, one who goes by the name of amerikajinda, sent me an email that stated as follows: "I hope your son dies in Iraq by a roadside bomb." Obviously, I was devastated that anyone would send such a hateful and hurtful email message to the father of a US Marine. Worse, they took photos of my son, in uniform, that I had posted on my own website to honor my son, and posted it on their sites to mock my son. I reported this to EVERY news agency in the country. I reported this to EVERY Democrat member of Congress or the Senate in the country. The result? Not a single, solitary one of them responded or gave a damn. As long as THAT is the face of liberalism I will NEVER vote for one of them nor will I take seriously their assertions that they support our troops and then turn a deaf ear to such disgusting abuse of one of our brave young men. I would feel this way if it were not my son, but that it is, I will NEVER forgive! And if, heaven forbid, he should be killed by a roadside bomb or any other means while he serves our country, I will blame each and every one of you liberals who allowed this open hatred towards our troops. This poll is essentially flawed. If enthusiasm is weighted heavily on the democrats how can a most likely to vote show McCain leading when registered voters show an eight point lead? If anything I would expect an increase lead in the most likely to vote group, not a decrease. GO BACK TO SCHOOL!

I suspect the sample size was tainted deliberately. It is very disingenuous to be practicing sensational journalism at such a crucial time in American’s politics. I would love to know how much they were paid by the GOP for this kind of crap. THIS IS SICK AND A DISGRACE! I am surprised and disappointed in everyone who thought fit to spread this type of propaganda, and it is also unfair to both candidates to try to distort reality. Obama is ahead by far and justifiably so. He is the candidate that has shown good judgment and the ability to lead from the front. The Bottom line is a politician who isn't smart enough to speak to the wounded troops probably isn't smart enough to run the country. This was a major faux pas. (hey look french from an American) anyway this tactical error on his part will cost him dearly. I am a MCCain supporter and always have been so it won't change my mind but when people see him grandstanding at the Berlin Wall and addressing the French apologizing for America's behavior while avoiding visiting our wounded it may resonate with his core but if will not sit well with those of us who have family, friends and countrymen in harms way.

By the way first claiming that he still would not implement the surge even after its dramatic success and trying to play off like even MCCain and Bush didn't think it would work show what a dog this guy is. Bush and MCCain were behind the surge when it wasn't a sure thing that is political courage. When Reagan Stood at the wall he was offering the soviet Union a chance to do the right thing and putting his credability on the line. When JFK stood at the wall he was defining our position in the face of a potential enemy.

When Barak stood at the wall he was declaring to the German people he was a Jelly doughnut. A priceless mispronunciation yes but true very very true.

Libs don't hate the military. We don't like conservative policy decisions. Since the military get directed by the President, our dislike, (disgust and revoltion) for the president gets transferred to the military. It isn't true. It's much more academic. Just business, nothing personal.

I understand why he didn't visit the troops. He explained his reasoning. (He understands that he really isn't the president, and it would be inappropriate.)

O also explained in great detail on TV this weekend why he won't say that the surge worked. It is quite complicated and you have to read it, then think about it, then decide if you agree or not. If you don't, post something about it after you read it.

I don't read conservative stuff with a slant, and you shouldn't look at democrats that way. We aren't the enemy.

I'll make the point again:

Eight years of experienced republicans in power and everything they dealt with has been a failure. (except the AIDS in Africa program. )

I think O would make a great first Global President that we could be proud of.

Why doesn't the press hound McCain and ask him about his position on invading Iraq in the first place? It was wrong. Immoral, dishonest and Bush did it to hold on to power.

Conservatives have really struck out. I think those idiots on the RNC payroll on TV keep everyone going, like the big screen in 1984.

I am tired of hearing McCain complains repeating against Obama. I strongly suggest that McCain should be retired and spend time with his wife. He's 72 years old. I saw on on MSNBC news that McCain supports an offshore drilling oil. I am opposed to that because it will endanger the environments. He does not understand the enconomy. He did not talk about it very much. His mind is not thought like Obama does. That makes sense he need to take his retirement.

He wrote me back and said that if I could provide him with evidence that this came from his member who would ban him permanently. I provided him with the email and full header showing the origin of the email as Herndon, VA, home of one amerikajinda. Apparently, he did not believe I was telling the truth (his members claimed I had invented the email) and after I provided the evidence he backtracked. He even posted on his site a question to another member that he knew had served in the military. He asked that member, who did not respond, what he thought should have been done about this sick individual. The point is he had already promised he would ban the member if the proof were provided. It was provided and he did not ban him. He did, however, ban me for defending the honor of my wife and daughter, who were also attacked on this site. My point is those who claim to support our troops while opposing the war will never be believed when they continue to support such abuses of our brave young men.

A close race benefits the media - all this polling is done (not so well) to retain interest and readership to drive advertising - its a farce. Today I had a market research firm call me and ask a whole bunch of really badly framed and loaded questions - it was clear the questions themselves were designed to create news - not provide true insight – it is really a shame that the media has become an excuse for advertising - the competition for readers is so great and the economics so daunting that were slipping into a black hole of misinformation driven by the advertising machine - it is the last breadth gasps of an old system - my advice - start writing quality and build a business model on subscription - we want news that is not just fit to print - but worth paying for

Oh – re Obama McCain – one is a disadvantaged black man that worked to get scholarships and get accepted then graduate as a distinguished student from one of the best universities in the world (Harvard) that went into public service and has surrounded himself with a world class team of thinkers - the other is guy that got into school through nepotism, graduated 5th from the bottom in his class (nearly a academic dropout) from Annapolis, who became a POW, then spent several decades as part of the political establishment whose party put us into two wars, the worst economic malaise and energy crises in decades - my choice was made awhile ago

Just because MSNBC hasn't told you something doesn't mean it never happened. Air Force intelligence showed a massive movement to Iraqi suplly lines moving from Iraqi millitary bases into Syria in the weeks leading up to OP S&A. Upon capture of these bases thousands gallons of chemical weapons materials were found along with empty Soviet missles. The only thing missing were the warheads themselves. Wonder went into Syria? Erick: really? You oppose off shore drilling because it hurts the envirornment? Hate to break it to you but: prove it. Underground drilling has less an effect on the enviornment than driving you car to the store. Or using electricity to power your internet. We're going to use the oil anyway so why should we buy it when we can make our own? Think about it. McCain understands a lot more about the economy than you do my friend. Do some damn reseacrh.

If Obama has an eight point lead among the registered to vote group, and enthusiasm is higher among democrats, it stands to reason this lead would increase in the most likely to vote group, not decrease. Your poll is bogus!

I suspect the media is trying to create this hype in order to capitalize on GOP and McCain’s money in advertisement by letting them think they are in with a chance. All that oil money pouring in to McCain is very tempting to media houses who will try to tap some of it, albeit to the detriment of honesty and fair play.

I keep hearing John McCain saying he knos how to fight wars and he knows how to win wars.

I am still in the dark about which wars he was in taht we won. He keeps saying he knows how to win wars. What wars have we won as a result of John McCain fighting in that war> If he knows how to win wars, then nhe should take the blame for the 4,124 american kives we have lost, that he could have saved if he had the ability to win this war, and he never made an attempt.

He obviously did not win the war in Vietnam, I am assuming he was shot down as he was diving down to release his bombs. If he knew then how to win wars why did he not prevent his getting shot down and costing a dam good plane.

The man is a proverbial liar and makes no effort to give americans a credit to be able to speak for themselves. He says he speaks for the american people! To my knowledge I have never asked him to speak for me, and I am sure there are millons more americans who would say the same.

Joh McCain will not admit it, but he already suffers from loss of memory, he is already showing signs of elzhemiers, how else canhe stand up and say he knows how to win wars. He needs to look at the scars on his face and neck and realize he has a personal war he is losing.

Americans, the majority of them, have turned against this war because we came to realize that we were lied to, pure and simple. Americans don't like it when they are lied to, and especially when it costs them the lives more than 4,000 of their sons and daughters. silencio, market economics is based on the "gut" feeling of investors at a given time. Whether drilling affects prices in 2-5 years is anyone's guess. My guess is that once the speculators know more money is coming to market, they will shift their investments elsewhere where money can be made. Pretty simple. Tell me about any of the liberal or conservative "experts" or the "CEOs of Big Oil" that predicted oil reaching the plateaus that they are at now. NOBODY did. If they did, maybe our "do nothing" congress would have done something. Our economy is based on moving goods and services. Oil is what drives our economy. It fuels our cars, trucks, trains and aircraft. Why our congress has entrusted the success or failure of our economy on unstable oil producing countries is anyone's guess.

McCain is apparently confused about all these things. I'm not sure exactly what this is supposed to be, but it looks like something that a two-year old having a tantrum would write - if the two-year old were neo-conservative, semi-literate and a fan of dead Americans.

1. The middle-east is part of Asia. what you meant to say is that Afghanistan is in Central Asia and not the middle-east.

1. The current Vietnamese regime openly admits that had the Americans stayed for a year or two more, North Vietnam would have sued for terms. 2. The ability and willingness to fight a war is an instrument of foreign policy - this is classical text and teaching from Sun Tzu to Clausewitz to Bismark. Does anyone even remember that Clinton went to war in Bosnia. And Somalia. Carter sent troops to Iran.

1. Bill Clinton inherited the benefits of 12 years of republican stewardship. By the time he was inaugurated, the Berlin wall had fallen, Germany was united and Yeltsin was President of Russia. No more cold war, no more expensive nuclear arms to procure. The result is only obvious.

2. Bill Clinton's economy gave us the DotBomb, created Enron and the like.

3. I do not doubt you know alot. But do you know enough.

No sh*t. They were up to their necks in Nazis. I think if the US was in the same situation (well, something similar), we'd be willing to sacrifice more. It would actually BE a question of our freedom. But no one can argue that Iraq was a serious threat to American freedom. They MAY have posed a threat IF they had acquired some WMDs. But even with WMDs they would not have really been a threat to our freedom. (when I talk about 'freedom' I'm not talking about our 'freedom' to run roughshod over everyone in the world that pisses us off)

Also, comparing the Iraq War in any way to WWII is kind of ridiculous. The reasons for the wars, how they were/have been fought, and the general state of the world are completely different.

He is the only one who now has a plan for the reformation of the world's economy--and it is being put in place by other countries of the world--notably those whose economies are thriving (India and China) and is being put in place by Russia, being heard in the Parliament of Italy--and has been used in some of the most exotic countries that are now "garden economies". notably, the rest of the world considers him a "great thinker"... Yet I dare not even mention his name on this august periodical or my note won't be made public and I will be called a "cult member" (people don't even know what a "cult" is.) That is exactly how "brain-washed" the average American is... So go ahead and argue about how good your candidate is--that is what you did about George BushA+B, and all the rest of the losers you voted for... until you free yourself of your addiction to TV and American news as financed by the British financiers who are vested in bringing about world government (dictatorship) and the reduction of the world population (by billions), which is the same thing you are doing with this election. John McCain has an excellent chance of winning and, I am not surprised the poll is starting to show McCain ahead. Many of the Hillary Clinton supporters do not like Barack Obama and they are voting against Obama by voting for John McCain. There are too many inconsistencies in Obama's biography, his background in Chicago politics, and the church he attended 20 years along with some of the people he associated with that do not set well with many Americans (democrats and republicans). Obama has a record of voting present much of the time which shows he didn't do a good job as a senator, so why elect him to a higher office?

I think the Middle East and European tour may have hurt Obama more than it helped him. It proved again how much Obama advertises himself and how the American media follows him around trying to shove him down the throats of American voters. It all looked so staged and phony. It was obvious Obama loved making a grand attention-getting speech to a huge crowd in Germany, but on "Meet the Press" he said he thinks there have been enough debates. Obama doesn't want to debate John McCain or answer impromptu questions. This might show how inexperienced he really is. Obama would much rather perform to a huge crowd and give a prepared speech using a teleprompter so he can be a "rock star". I think Obama is "The Great Pretender" and I will definitely vote against Obama even though I am a life-long democrat.

Your comments are almost laughable except that it's sad to see people think like you. Lets take a look at McCain's voting record of the last year and a half. 279, yes that's 279, of not voting or present votes for bills. WOW! He's a real good choice. As for associating with racists/nut cases. Well, let's see, McCain actually courted several of these (Pastor Hagee and such) to try and win the ultra right wing nut case core that thinks the Rapture is just around the corner and that god talks to Bush. I know, I know, you'll say 'but Obama stayed in a church with this man for decades, it had to have affected his opinions.' Pretty much that's a load of bull too. I know lots of guys who go to church and, if they even manage to stay awake through the service, they'll gloss over anything they don't agree with. I work with a Catholic, very moderate, who's son came home one day appalled over the story that all the first born sons of Egypt would be killed unless the doors were marked with lambs blood. He couldn't understand how any loving god would do that to innocents that had nothing to do with the situation at all. My coworker friend's response, 'there's lots of crazy *** said in lots of religion. The best thing to do is weed out the positive messages and tune out the stories that the frothing at the mouth hate mongers like to hold onto.' The point, just because someone goes to a church for a long time doesn't mean he agrees with everything said there. By your view on the matter then I should be a racist. I had relatives that were around me all the time that spewed idiotic rhetoric on blacks, asians and such for years. My view, people are people and should be judged on individual merits and not the color of their skin or other nonsensical reasons to hate others for no good reason.

As for McCain's qualifications to be president on the military side, that's highly overblown as well. Wesley Clark said it right, being shot down and imprisoned as a POW for years does not make you a military expert. I have a relative that was a POW too and I wouldn't trust him to be in charge of anything military related. He was just a soldier that got caught. The same thing goes for McCain. If he had had a real command role then it might be a different story. Don't get me wrong, there are things that I agree with on with McCain and during the 2000 election he would have made a far better president than Bush ever could even dream of being. Sadly, that McCain has seemingly disappeared as he tries to woo the ultraconservatives that have no connection with reality at all.

As for Obama, I don't agree with him on everything either. But, those people that crow the loudest that he has no experience don't get the point at all. Quite frankly the only way to get experience being president is to, wait for it, be President. There's also the fun little fact that no one person can have all the skills that would be necessary to navigate all the issues that would come up. A person good for the role of president is someone that would pick knowledgeable people in various fields that could advise them on the intricacies inherent with their respective field of expertise. Of course even that isn't enough. The person that is president would have to be willing to listen to said advice and not just dismiss it if it doesn't agree with their preconcieved notions. The Bush administration has been a perfect example of what not to do. They place cronies and yes men that don't want to make waves and those that do are replaced. The core group in charge, I can't bring myself to call them leaders becasue they really aren't, had a defined notion of what they wanted and anything that disagreed is hidden or pushed to the side.

I've read and seen enough about Obama to know that he would be far better at listening to advice than Bush could ever hope to and, from the way McCain has been composing himself recently, I feel he would be better than McCain as well.

As for Obama being a once in a generation leader... that has yet to be seen. If he gets the presidentcy he has a chance to prove it. At the moment he shows that he has a passion for trying to make our government actually work for us again. Whether he can bring that about is a differnent story seeing as there is no way to see the future. Right now what matters is the message that the candidates send and if I have to choose between stay the course and a chance of hope, I'll take hope every time as those that stay the course often drive right off of a cliff.

The thought that went behind the USA Today poll was about as deep as your waders and the American people (along with the media) can tell by the smell what it consists of.

Obama's tour overseas demonstrated the true potential of the next four years. For the first time in a generation we'll have a President who can bring positive change to policy abroad and here at home.

As for those "unlikely voters" - they're the ones who are feeling the greatest pain under the Republican reign. Don't underestimate their conviction when they're empowered to change things.

Reasons.....Being in Sales all my life, I discovered that no matter what the decision a person makes or doesn't make, a reason is always given....and it doesn't have to be a valid reason or the real reason.

It's a sad fact that many people can't look past Obama's color in makinjg a decision for change in this country. McCain may know how to win wars (Just ask the Joint Chiefs), but I feel that Obama can prevent wars. What is more important?

McCain doesn't know that Iraq doesn't share a border with Afghanistan, "How Cute", doesn't haven't a clue about our economy (With his rich wife, how can he empathize), or operate a computer (How can he understand emerging technical concepts?) and yet he will probably get elected President of our Country because he is White and Comfortable.

Nonetheless, time will tell. The truth is without hope there is nothing and in this case more of the same is the antithesis of hope. Thus, in my opinion, McCain = Status Quo = The Absence of Hope. As such this is the last of my posts and tomorrow, instead of arguing pointless dogma on a silly blog, I will be working to motivate and register new voters to support Obama, for better or for worse, with a vote for change. Is it really true that not many people cannot relate to Obama? Or can pretty much everyone relate to him in some way? He's a combination of so many demographics that it certainly might be difficult to relate to him wholly, but I think people have been pretty good at picking out what about Obama is just like them.

No matter how tight a campaign Obama runs, there are people out there who just fundamentally disagree with him. The candidates are pushing ideological agendas that are classically in opposition (small government v. big government). I don't think it's realistic to expect a huge lead just because he is a smooth talker who has run a good campaign. I also think that people are not easily forgetting his association with his pastor.

Finally, there is a sizable group of undecideds, and these are the people who would create the bump from Obama's trip, but these are also people who haven't yet been swept up in the excitement surrounding Obama. His trip abroad would not be the kind of thing that sways these voters. The images from his trip played into his rockstar image that has so far left undecided voters unimpressed. The undecideds are still waiting to be spoken to and going to Europe might excite Obama's dedicated followers but it probably won't immediately convert anyone.

I think cm4297 is sadly mistaken if he believes that Obama is getting Hillary's vote. Those of us who supported her will in no way shape or form will support or vote for Obama. Also, those of us who support Clinton are not Democrats. I think that you are forgetting the Independent voters. Additionally, why are you mocking the fact that McCain could be ahead in the polls. His favorability ratings will only continue to go up in the weeks to come. Obama's will slowly fall. He made a serious error in judgment in not going to see the troops. If you honestly support Hillary, then you would support Obama because they both supported the same policies. How can you make a jump from a Hillary policy to a McCain policy. Just like drug addicts, it's never their fault it's always someone elses. I am sick of hearing what was done well over a hundred years ago, this is not a race between black and white it is a race between two people. Quit turning it into something it is not. Base the vote on what it is. If he went to a hate white churce it is fair game to base your vote on that. Just like in any election. If I were conducting an job interview, and I had to choose between an elderly man with years of experience, and a younger man who is intelligent, quick, and a good communicator filled with potential to deal with the problems in my company and lead it to its future success, I would choose the younger man with intelligence. But in today's world, you need someone who can keep up the pace, make sound decisions based upon the facts right now, not 20 years ago. The problem generally with Obama supporters is that they do not realize what a HUGE NEGATIVE IMPACT Rev. Wright had on most people in this country. Let's face it, after the most unpopular President and Deomcratic Congress in history this was a layup for the Democrats to win the White House, but they picked the wrong candidate. He will not win.

I do not care that Obama is African American, I care about his abilities. And so far, all I see is a good speech presenter. Negotiating and being a real decision maker is ALOT different.

Until he debates in an open forum with John McCain I am undecided.

This is just the beginning. for all the media hype and one sidedness(including the shamelessly biased Romano) obama should be much farther ahead.

The presumptuous attitude is indeed annoying if not enraging. this coupled with the media practically trying to name him as president will create a huge backlash among the anti-liberal / conservative blocks of voters. His arrogance is truly irritating in that he knows NOTHING and proves this each day through his change of positions from his original naive statements and promises. statements which he now is beginning to see were totally mistaken concerning Iraq and negotiation with rogue states and terrorist organizations(many of whom endorse him....Hmmm)

As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted

to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan

for about an hour on his visit to 'The War Zone'. I

wanted to share with you what happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle,

got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who

is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers were lined up to shake his hand he blew

them off and didn't say a word as he went into the

conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the

vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top

tent that military personnel can play basketball or work

out in with weights) so he could take his publicity

pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the

opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their

service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the

American's back home that he is their candidate for

President. I think that if you are going to make an effort

to come all the way over here you would thank those that

are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players

or the Dallas Cowboy Cheer leaders than from Senator, who

wants to be the President of the United States . I just

don't understand how anyone would want him to be our

Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be

around those that provide the freedom for him and our great

country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am

sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of

person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

I'm another lifelong Democrat who absolutely cannot bring himself to support or vote for Obama. He's selling salvation like a tin-plated televangelist. With so many 'Believe' signs, you'd think you were watching the opening act at a Billy Graham crusade.

You can argue that no one has all the experience necessary to be President, but Obama is not even close to being prepared. 1976 was another 'change' election and Jimmy Carter ran on the same 'Outsider' platform Obama is running on today; and that train wreck led to Ronald Regan four years later. Omaba is abother 'Decider' who will leave the management of the Executive Branch of government to his advisers. That was Bush's style. What we need is someone who is capable of holding their staff accountable for performaning, not totally dependent on them for knowing what should be done.

Well, some good news at last! But before we anti-Obamaites break out the champagne, we need to pause for a reality check. The polling has been so consistently Obama ahead of McCain by at least six points, that one has to wonder if this poll showing McCain ahead is not a fluke. I imagine it is.

Also, the timing of this poll is after Obama's worldwind pre-coronation tour which has to give him a bounce. I saw some poll after his tour de grace where he was beating McCain by 8 points (Obama vs McCain 49 - 41). That is probably the more accurate poll for now.

I can see him going to the war zones to bounce his withdrawal plan against the reality on the ground. But it is folly to announce timetables in a war zone with a clear terrorist undercurrent. And I can maybe even see his Israel trip to hone his policy on the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict. Although that was probably really to allay Jewish fears about his support of Israel. But to Germany, at the wall no less! Who does he think he is, ambassador to the world at large? Pleaazzze!!!!!!!!!

But even here he probably had a rationale. The Germans are so eager to show the world how much they've changed from their Nazi past (yeah right!), that they will embrace a mixed race person. Sort of a repudiation of the Nuremberg laws I guess. So he knew he'd get a warm welcome there. He is a consummate politician, I'll grant him that much!

And then on the other side of the coin, maybe this poll is a real breaking point for McCain. Perhaps the worldwind tour started waking some Americans up to the fact that this character Obama is a little too full of himself!

I must say, this election year is shaping out to be much more interesting than 2000 and 2004 combined. So much passion! I just hope (ha ha) that Americans can discern properly as to what is really going on and what is at stake. This is not the Super Bowl.

If history is to teach us anything, its American's proclivity towards manufactured drama. Blame the media and their advertisers for hyper-inflating the wrong issues and marginalizing the right ones. Just because you are a journalist (yes, YOU Mr. Romano) does not mean you are thinking, much less opining, about the proper issues.

If (biggest word in the English Language) the media had any sort of moral compass, although it revels in distorting the flaws of everyone else's, they would reign in their dangerous tendencies to speculate. Polls convert speculation into news, and are the lifeblood of political consultants. Winning the poll wars during a campaign often seems like the only real purpose of the campaign staffs. A favorable poll means a candidate is connecting with voters, an unfavorable one is dismissed as flawed and meaningless. Every recent poll trumps the previous ones until the final one is taken on election day. By then, Mr. McCain will finally find out how many voters think the continuation of the war is a good thing, how many voters think the economy is in good shape, and how many voters believe replacing one bonehead with another will actually set the nation on the right course.

Lying about Obama's motives for not visiting wounded soldiers in Germany (no cameras allowed) is McNasty's latest. The truth is that Obama visited soldiers when he was in Iraq with no reporters or cameras present. But the truth doesn't matter if you throw enough mud; some of it will stick. Unfortunately, this is asymmetric warfare: the Democrats don't play the ugly games the neocon-dominated Republican Party plays, with ample assistance from the media. Democrats try to appeal to logic and common human decency, and it doesn't work all that well. And THAT's Obama's real "problem," not the myriad problems the media invents for him weekly.

Americans are informed people. We aren't limited (yet) by our govenrment to obtain information like the Cubans, Chinese, etc. We can tell a real person from a created image. Hollywood and the DNC have tried everything to create Obama into a "Presidential Image". The youth may go "goo goo" for a while, but they change their loyalty quickly. They want something that ie real and not fake. Obama's popularity has just about played itself out. It is interesting that the Obama campaign uses rock bands to attract the youth to come to hear his repetitive speech.

The Democrats are testing the nation to see how easily we can be controled before they pounce on us with a Socialistic (Communistic) government. Therefore, they are telling us what lightbulbs to use in our house, what foods to eat, cut back on driving, and once they take over all the mortgage companies, they will tell us who can buy a house and where we can live.

Sounds like Cuba, huh?

It would be like counting the online polls on AOL and MSNBC.com, as being scientific and accurate samples. Obama has been shown to be ahead by 4-5% nationally for a few weeks now. Yes, I took statistics in graduate school, but do the math: 2,674 registered voters and 791 likely voters, compared to 100+ MILLION registered voters?

How is this even for a nanosecond considered a representative sample? I'm betting there are 3400 registered voters in this country at this very moment lying comatose in hospital beds - let's poll them, and use those predictions.

Or 3400 registered voters who won't show up on election day because their kid has chicken pox - let's poll them, and use those predictions.

Either or both will be just as meaningless as the polls sited in this article;

One thing to keep in mind is that there is a difference between registered voters and likely voters. Every Election, we hear about the Youth vote and every election this doesn't pan out. The laregest voting block in recent elections is people over 55 years old which account for 25-30% of the votes cast. Despite the rock star aura around Senator Obama created by the media, I think this block will agian determine the outcome.

Also, the winner wil come down the traditional battleground states of OH., MI., PA., FL. and maybe Virginia. Some things in politics don't change adn this is one of those things..

So to Senator Obama I would say don't count on your rock star aua to win but focus on the battleground states. because if Senator McCain wins MI., OH., Virginia, and FL. , he wins the election. If he chooses Romney as his running mate, he will win MI. and this also puts in play OH. and PA.

Andrew some how equates enthusiasm with actual votes. It doesn't matter which side has more enthusiasm it only matters who shows up and votes. The young voters may prefer Obama by a wide margin but this age group has never shown up when it really mattered. Remember "Rock the Vote" and "Vote or Die" when so many people registered for the first time? It didn't make a difference. I suspect this year won't be any different.

One thing to keep track of is the number of "undecided" voters just before election day. A large percentage of "undecideds", especially Democrats means trouble for Obama. A large percentage of them will vote for McCain, (Bradley Effect).

This recent poll should be no surprise at all, given Obama's credentials--a very brief political resume and the most liberal voting record in the U.S. Senate. In addition, of course, all of these prior polls have overstated Obama's appeal because African American candidates almost alway poll better than the actual vote indicates. A significant number of American voters are simply unwilling to say that they won't vote for black candidates. To win in November Obama would need a solid double-digit lead at this juncture. With the prevailing antipathy for Bush and the Republicans more generally, he should have it. But he doesn't, and that spells political doom for him in November. Mark my words, Obama will peak some time soon and slowly but surely McCain will pull ahead. We know all there is to know about McCain politically and personally and very little about Obama. Obama has no where to go but down, and his decline will give McCain the election--narrowly, but inevitably. This will not be a Republican victory but a left-wing dominated Democratic Party loss.

Sorry my friends, as McCain likes to say. McCain will never get the nod from it's citizens. There is too much at stake. Take a look at the record turnouts in primaries. You can hope that millions of new voters will stay home, but I don't think so. With the 50 state strategy, Obama will recreate the electoral map- just watch. Just as we got rid of Bush l with the thought "am I better off today than 4 years ago?" The answer was no and Clinton swept in. McCain is a continuation of Bush ll- people see that and more will when the rhetoric heats up and we get closer to the election. McCain is dangerous for our futures. Is Obama untested in some areas? Certainly, but so were most great Presidents. I am fully confidet it will be an Obama Presidency, but in desperation, I am sure the Republicians will throw everything but the kitchen sink, probably that too. All the negatives will do is reinforce we need Obama. Start getting used to it my friends. Obama will be an excellent President!

Contrary to the conclusions drawn here, I think that it's Obama's voters that will make a difference by showing up or not showing up. Essentially, if you think that previously voting is a good predictor of future voting, than you may conclude Obama loses because his "base" consists people newly attracted to politics, which inherently suggests they would not have voted in previous elections. Regardless, I think a much more interesting question that has received strikingly little attention is how the emergence of cell-phone only voters (i.e. no land line) will impact the accuracy of the polls. I don't think that it is a stretch to assume that this growing segment of the population would overwhelmingly consist of Obama supporters.

In 1993 the Conservative Party in Canada was almost decimated because of the unpopular leader of the party Brian Mulroney. Although they had a new leader running , they lost almost every seat in Canada. The polls then showed that it would be a 3 way race between the parties ( the Liberals & the new Reform Party ) but on election day the Liberals won and not only won, but the Conservative party lost official party status which means that if you donated to the Conservative Party you could not write off the donation on your taxes because they never had enough seats.

What happened ? First time voters came out on record numbers . A lot of Conservatives stayed home , and a lot of Conservatives voted for the Reform party.

A poll was done a couple of weeks ago in Canada and the results were 17% for McCain. Polls can be an indicater, but there is one thing that you cannot predict , and that is the voters mood on election day.

Polls are deceptive and useless. The only poll that count, is the totality of people. Based on the primaries, my correlation to that reveals that Obama will win in November by a landslide. The loosing democrat bested all the combined republican votes. This is a mark of the energy and turnout on the democratic side -- 3 to 1 in most cases. I believe Hillary was a blessing in disguise for Obama -- she made the democrats practice for November. The question therefore, is not whether Obama is gonna win, but what coattails he will bring along. I predict it will be reminiscence to Gingrich's "Contract With America." with the republicans on the loosing end. Because people are seeing Obama's true colors. He will tell people what they want to hear to win. These polls are taken over the telephone. The polling companies are not permitted to call people on their cell phones and can only use the landlines (because they would be eating up your minutes). Why are we surprised that "likely voters" go for McCain. The youth vote doesn't show up and isn't likely to vote. The blue collar vote can hardly afford to take an hour off of work and aren't likely to vote. The "Hillary or Die" crowd isn't likely to vote. So who's left? Old voters and rich voters and ardent church voters who always show up to vote and they're all leaning towards McCain. It's a no brainer. We don't need polls anyway. Just look at how the last Democrat (Kerry) did among the various demographics and lost. Obama will need to increase those percentages to 50.1% overall to capture the popular vote. It is possible to lose with the majority of the popular vote but that doesn't often happen. Although it did happen 8 yrs ago,

Anyway Kerry got 95% of the black vote and 41% of the white vote. He got less than 60% of the Hispanic vote. Obama won't do any better percentage wise among blacks but there will be increased black voter turnout for him. I doubt Obama will get the same percentage of the white vote as Kerry. Increased black turnout will help to make up that deficit but not completely. So he will have a shortfall which he will have to make up with another group, say Hispanics. Keep in mind that he will have to increase Kerry's percentages somewhere to get to 50.1%. He will need more than 60% (besting Kerry) of the Hispanic vote to make up the white deficit and move onto 50.1%.

There has historically been trouble between Hispanics and blacks in the urban areas. So how well will he do with this group? I'd say he needs 65% of the Hispanic vote to pull this off (best kerry and move onto the 50.1%). Can he do it? Who knows? I think this election will go down to the wire.

Here's the answer to this mystery. In reality the democrats have about an 10 percent party affiliation lead nationwide now. That means there are about 10% more democrats than republicans currently. However the poll showing McCain winning was rigged poll EQUAL numbers of democrats and republicans even though that isn't the national reality. So they give McCain a non-real 10 point advantage there. Guess what, then McCain comes out about 4 points ahead which means that Obama really has about a 6 point national advantage which fits most the other polls when you add back the missing 10 percent of democrats. There are not equal numbers of democrats and republicans, it's not reality and shouldn't be polled as reality this poll is close to a fraud as one can be. The term "likely" just confuses the reporters into arguing over "likely". The underlying premise of polling equal numbers of republicans and democrats when there are 10% more democrats is where the problem lies.

I am so amazed at why we always look at the total popular vote as well as bringing up 8 years ago when Bush quote unquote lost the popular vote. We dont live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic with representational government. Our president is determined by the electoral college and that has more of an effect on who votes and who does not. If voters know that a candidate is going to win their state, the representative is going to win, and the senator is going to win (or is not in the election cycle) or vice versa they know their candidate is going to lose they may not make the effort to go to the polls. Two documented cases in 2000; the prediction that Gore won in Florida before the polls closed in the western part of the state and Texas voters who did not go to the polls because they knew Bush would win the state. Although these were Republican instances, I know of Californians, New Yorkers, and Hawaiians who said the same thing. Why go when the outcome is already decided.

So I ask why arent we polling by states with likely voters? That makes much more sense than National Polls. I sure miss Tim Russert already.

I can't understand why anyone pays ANY attention to McCain's objections to Obama's international trip when he went earlier (remember him having to be corrected about the Iraqi people). Plus it was McCain who criticized Obama for not having gone over recently. I guess it's those ole blinders again, giving that oldster double standards!!

Sounds to me as though McCain needed a little good news. He's always off on his own, giving stump speeches to handfuls of people who don't seem that enthused, though they're receptive.

Obama is obviously the more attractive candidate - he's just more interesting to talk to, I bet, with more life and energy, more ideas... but he is a little green perhaps.

Odd that we have such a choice to make in the Fall. Who is McCain picking for his VP? Wonder if it's Carly Fiorina? She has absolutely no government/political experience, but she would draw all the disgruntled ex-Hillary voters I bet. Well, we shall see. Could she step in and be our President if McCain's health failed? I doubt it. Maybe she could be Commerce Secretary or some other cabinet type...

McCain is the better man by a long shot and he is SO much more qualified than the used car salesman liberals are trying to scam American with. Listen to the idiots who try to portray Obama as some sort of American hero. Absolutely laughable hen you compare him to McCain.

McCain decided to serve his country (yes, in politics) after he was tortured for his country in a North Vietnamese prison. 99.99999% of people in the US have never been though his situation. And those who downplay that will pay for it. Obama's life compared to McCain's was a pampered life, praised by black bigots. "Huh?..Whaa?.... How could there be black bigots....and how could Mr. Obama like bigots?"

You see, here is another fact some Americans have forgotten.....McCain never had a close "20 year relationsip" with a bunch of racist friends like Obama has, no matter what liberals will try to claim just because McCain is on the GOP ticket. Hello? Look, most Jews and many Hillary fans will not vote for Obama. That's very simple. And the media's love fest will eventually kill Obama's campaign. (and gee....the TV spots about his racist friend, Rev. Wright, are not even on yet) The debates are also going to be fun to watch. McCain will win it right there. Watch.
