We have totally lost perspective on the role of the President and realistically what positive impact he/she can have on our lives.

We should be praying that the actions of the next president has as little impact on us as possible. His failure to defend this country or his failure to implement sustainable energy and food policies (with the help of congress which is a dream in itself) would have a terrible and possibly cataclysmic impact upon us.

As for counting on the Federal Government to help us. No thanks. The unintended consequences are usually much worse than the original symtoms. Stay out of the way and let free enterprise work.

Yet another example of "do-gooders" inflicting catastrophic unintended consequences, directly attributable to the fact that they JUST WON'T LISTEN to those of us who understand natural law, the constitution, and rhe proper role of government. As to so-called "poverty" here, the dire portrayal and hand wringing are hyperbolic exaggerations intended to advance socialism. Real poverty exists the world over - our "impoverished" class mostly has food, shelter, TV sets, cars, drugs, expensive clothes, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've stood in line at the supermarket witnessing overweight humans bedecked in gold jewelry and dental caps purchasing junk food, snacks and other goodies using a government EBT card - which WE finance by mandate - only to exit and get into a late model sedan and drive off. So don't talk to us about "compassion". If it sucks so much here, then why is the whole world beating down our door to enter?

Obama is a hard working, intelligent guy who outlined a great plan for keeping our country safe and strong, tax cuts for the middle class, and a solid energy policy. He called for all Americans to stop the name calling, we are all patriots and love our country, we just have different viewpoints. But some folks seem to think that only white Republicans are true Americans. Sad state of affairs. But ... doubt if anybody is going to change anybody else's minds on these forums, I think most people already have their minds made up. I haven't seen any solid ideas come from either side concerning the economy, and I'm still waiting for either side to speak up. But no, all I hear from the left is "Change" which, according to most of the left, only means that Obama is a good looking younger black man. So much for equality.

Meanwhile, all I hear from the right is "Obama has no experience and doesn't know how to lead". Great, but what is their leadership strategy?

I do know a couple things about the economy that everyone, and I mean everyone, seems to have missed: A few tremors in fall of 1999 lead to a small crash in the summer of 2000, the beginning signs of the "bubble burst". By the time Bush took office it was already in full swing. Bush had no recovery strategy that I've been able to see, now why would I want to elect someone else who has no recovery strategy? BTW, I didn't vote for Bush either time.

Oh, and Clinton wasn't responsible for the boom either. The "Clinton Economy" was a sham, he was riding the tech bubble up and just happened to get out of office before anyone would admit it was over. It was like the housing bubble, but on a larger scale. We don't sell houses to other countries, but we sure did sell a lot of technology.

In the past 16 years I haven't seen any president do anything to noticeably improve the economy. So what's the plan now?

Comments from PHORTO have developed some reactions. I think this person wants to be noticed. I try to understand what he/she is trying to say but remain perplexed.

The issue at hand is a bunch of people making fun of a very serious situation; Obama, his venue for his acceptance speech, his popularity, his ability to pass on his message, etc. Any intelligent person, whether you like him or not would be curious about what makes him tick and how to maybe obtain some of those attributes. But what we see are some foolish people in togas trying to minimize him. I think it is FEAR.

Obama has endured all the name-calling from the smallest people around. People such as PHORTO, who appear to have a problem with living in a world where caring is important, make me gasp in awe at their selfishness. PHORTO, you really lack the basic attributes that qualify you to be part of this discussion. I think you should look closely at Obama, observe how he has handled himself as a human being, and then sit quietly and examine your innermost feelings. Why this aggressive behaviour? Believe me America would not be America if it only depended on people like you. I say this with the greatest respect for you as a person, and it is not meant as an insult.

This name-calling must stop. Obama has being criticized for not being aggressive. He is not by nature mean. No one can change that. He has the power of wit and intelligence. McCain is all war!! Everything about him is about being in Vietnam. That is not the leader we want for the greatest nation on the Earth. The message Obama is passing on is one of change; doing it differently. It is a message. He has outlined what he will do. How he will do it. But he cannot give all the details; he is not a magician. Policies will have to be developed when he becomes POTUS. He will have to discuss with others; that is democracy and the sign of a good leader.

In a way the togas and the negative comments are very positive for Obama. But by going to such extremes, supporters of McCain show that they are very worried that Obama is touching the hearts and minds of many people. So they label him a cult leader!! What a laugh. I guess that makes all the supporters of Obama, crazy minded people!! You have some of the best minds in America supporting Obama. They are thinking and analyzing. They are positive and do care. McCain and his supporters have to find a better way to show that they have something better to offer.

The bottom line is this; everyone is free to vote for their preferred candidate, but let us be civilized about it and stop covering up insecurities by insulting others.

Surely, most Americans aren't so unfamiliar with 18th & 19th century American architecture that they don't realize a lot of it, especially in the South, used Greek revival style - lots and lots of columns. I am a youg white college age teenage whose family can not afford to send her to a university. We were the middle class. Now I have to attend a community college for a year or two. But, I am not complaining. Instead I am voting. Voting for someone who cares about those who are not millionaires. Someone who won't let an American citizen no matter the color or class, drown while waiting for help. America needs a change and I don't care who the color of the candidate is. The reason why there aren't any people to show up for McCain's rally, unlike Obama supporters, is because the McCain supports have to work to pay for all the government supported programs and people that Obama and his party represent. So, Obama supporters collect their monthly checks, hop a bus, and head out to the weekly rally while the rest of us work for a living. I can't afford to take off - I have too many government programs to pay for. But, you can all live your "dream" and continue to vote for a person with no record of any kind - not major contributions of any kind to this country while he's been in office..but know this.....the silent majority (and we are a majority)...we sit back, take it all in, and keep silent until voting day. Then we'll turn up..we'll come from rural american where hard work and making it on your own matter more than government supported programs. You know, the group that no one ever calls to poll, no one ever asks how they're voting - we're the silent majority...and we make a difference at the polls EVERY time!!!!! We don't attend rallys, we don't drive for hours to shake someone's hand - we just show up at the polls and make our voice heard. WE don't need pomp and circumstance, we don't need fancy speeches - we vote with our conscience. We're not drawn in by "history making", or flashy words or programs. We're drawn in by substance and we vote based on our understand and knowledge of the issues that matter to us. So lets see, on one hand we have a candidate who is highly educated, went to top school based on his own merit, and hard work,and graduated among the top of his class is a family man who inspires people around him to do better. And on the other hand we have someone who was selected to go to naval academy because of his family connections, graduated at the bottom of his class, left his wife and kids becuase she was sick and poor and married a rich woman, a marriage of convienience, so that he could have connections in the Arizona political scene , is as inspiring as a bent nickle and his only qualification is that he was a POW. Hmmmmmmm , and we are arguing about who is a better candidate.

Now lets go back 8 years , we picked a candidate who was quite similar to one of the above, I will let you guys make an educated guess, and look what he did to our country. Needless to say we are in a toilet and these republicans , who actually are a minority in this country, want us to pick another mediocre president, scraped from the bottom of the barrel, just because the other guy is Black and they just cant stand it. How dare he. He was supposed to use the side entrance, the one used by the help, how dare he come in through the front door.

Too bad.

The problem with republicans is that they may shout a lot about being against the homosexuals , they actually are on record to being closet homosexuals, and you know why. They have been screwed in the ass for so long that they have begun to like it and always ask for more and have turned homosexual without even knowing about it.

I started my own company and we loss money the first year. I worked 7 days a week for years. At age 52, my privately held company had $4.5 billion in sales and I sold it. Yes, you are dead wrong about your taxes paying for government programs for liberals. When I sold my company, I paid more taxes than you will make in 1,000 lifetimes. You have one vote,use it wisely. If you can inspire, you can lead. If the only thing that Barack Obama accomplishes in his lifetime is to move this great nation away from complacency, then he has done more than any other politician has in decades.

Perhaps his weakness is his lack of experience, but some of the most successful individuals in business and government are aware of their own weaknesses and compensate for them by surrounding themselves with people that have the strengths that they don't possess. If George W. Bush had done this, he may not have been such an abysmal failure.

I have voted Republican for most of my life. There is a time for stengthening big business, but the pendulum must swing the other way now because a weak middle class will eventually result in a weak nation.

As for John McCain, he is a great hero who deserves honor and respect from all Americans. With the exception of his time spent as a POW, life has been kind to him. He enjoys a life of abundance far greater than the vast majority of Americans can even begin to imagine and God knows he deserves it. I just don't think the time is right for another President that can't relate to this American life.

I also find your comments about all Obama's supporters are lazy bums, who sit on their asses all day. I have been in the Army for almost 19 years now and have two combat tours, so I KNOW that I have worked a hell of a lot harder than you have. But since my salary is paid by tax dollars, you probably think of it as a Government handout. Since you are posting on this blog, then you are not "silent" Yes, it is sad that the Government has to help make The "American Dream" come true because they have to protect the people that are raped by the big money corporations and big oil companies that the repugnants love to suck up to.

funchic, Obama voted "present" when he was in the Illinois state legislature, not as a U.S. Senate. Also, you don't really want to compare Obama's absentee record to John McCain's record. John McCain has not even bothered to show up and make a single vote since April, including votes on funding for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and to vote for or against the new G.I. Bill.

Kristin voted for "W" twice.

Kristin goes to the ER several times a month instead of a regular doctor

Kristin has 2 young kids on welfare and the Illinois "All Kids" health insurance (for the poor, uninsured)

Kristin thinks the Iraq War was smart and brought the fight "there" and not "here"

Kristin cannot hold a job because she is lazy.

Kristin lives in rural America.

Kristin does not pay taxes.

Kristin's Medicaid pays for her to use medication to make her feel better, including pain killer patches at $300 a week.

She's now on disability because she had a spinal fusion.

I pay huge Federal taxes.

I paid (borrowed through student loans) to go to college and to law school and owe $160,000

Law school is full of right wingers.

I pay for a right winger's health care biweekly out of my paycheck.

I have a spinal fusion and pay $500 per month for a family of 4 for health insurance plus co-pays of another $200-300 per month.

Harvard Law is $200,000 -- that's how much SENATOR OBAMA borrowed to go to law school.

He has been serving in the Illinois legislature for years.

However, this McCain VP candidate only was a councilperson and is a 1st-term governor.

Last night he gave the most anti-american dream speach from any US Politician: Business is bad and profits are bad - Never knew the US was against capitalism. Individuals who are rich are bad, why because they accomplished something? Beyond how well he speaks from a teleprompter, where is the beef? Does anyone actually listen to the words? He actually said that a sitting United States Senator (john McCain) should leave washington and his post and run around caves in Afganistan looking for BinLaden. It got applause since McCain did not do it (therefore he is a bad guy), but did anyone really ask: well did Obama go there? That is the level of stupidity hidden in the details of great tone and presentation. In business we call that "an Empty Suit"!

Such totally unsubstantive, mock-style attacks play exactly into the kind negative politicking that Senator Obama has challenged. These people are shooting themselves in the foot by proving Obama's point. They do a disservice to their party and what it represents -- by making the GOP look like toga-wearing cynics who would criticize someone on totally frivilous personal grounds.

They would do better to challenge Senator Obama's policies. But it's doubtful that toga-clad (evoking "Animal House," for anyone?) McCain supporters will ever do that.

Obama, under the tutorial of the fanatical Reverend Wright, immersed himself and his family in Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist derivative which rejects Christianity; and, which professes that the White race is equivalent to the Devil. It's amazing that anyone would be shocked at Obama's perverted view of the Bible, concerning which Obama recently publicly mocked Jesus Christ's "Sermon On The Mount". Rev. Obama's repeated references to "economic parity" and "social justice" are simply Marxist jargon for "Taking more from you and giving it to others for the common good". Further, noone should be surprised at Obama's proclamation that American is NOT a Christian Nation. This from a man who is a fanatical advocate of the abhorrent procedure of partial-birth-abortions. Although the Obama campaign has painstakingly attempted to lay a smokescreen to confuse the past religious associations of their candidate, hopefully a Christian America will send Obama an unmistakable message in November. It's what you get with an un-vetted candidate whose only skill is reciting a text from a teleprompter while even Jesse Jackson admits Obama arrogantly looks down his nose and "talks down to the audience." Most of the stuff you said about your sister-in-law applies to the people in my neighborhood as well, The differences are that they supported Clinton and don't care much about the war in Iraq.

Unlike you, I get insurance from my employer and owe only $50k in student loans. It's not like my insurance is free though, since its value was taken into account when seting my salary.

I went to a public university, which was full of left-wingers. In fact, at the beginning of my course on racial equality the teacher said "We're here to discuss disenfranchisement of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans and Women. If you're not among these groups you can't possibly understand the problem and you won't earn a good grade in this class" Funny, the class was a requirement. Who do you think was left out of that list?

Most of the top students in the school cheated occasionally. Listening to Obama's speech, it's easy to believe he's smart enough to have only "needed" to cheat very few times. It's also clear that he's willing to be slightly deceptive in order to achieve his goals.

But then again, who isn't deceptive? I'm honest, which is probably why I'm not a politician.

I have great respect for the democratic process and am a Republican because I'm fiscally conservative. I do not support the Republican views on abortion, gay marriage and other social issues. I consider myself a moderate and am happy to see both sides with reasonable candidates who support that point of view. My conservative side does not believe in Robin Hood economics and I will not demonize those who have achieved success because they are successful. I came from a very poor background but was able to follow a path to success of my own effort. I've achieved a much better quality of life than my folks enjoyed. I don't believe it is the job of the federal government to be the savior to all who are in need. There are other outlets.

I won't vote for Obama. A major reasons is I don't trust the government to get things right and pushing national health care is not the right answer.

I've seen a lot of passion going into this election effort by Obama supporters. I've observed more zealots on Obama's side than any other candidate in my lifetime and appreciate how he can inspire people. I'm tired of the old guard but fear inexperience at a time when it could dicey out there. I know we need to quit being the international police force and our economy is clearly impacted by the outflow of dollars into our war effort but I have respect for the military and believe those who actually put their lives on the line deserve support.

My concerns about Obama aren't necessarily about Obama. In my world I've observed people who were promoted to positions in corporate America above their experience level who failed. In most cases they were promoted becausee of potential but failed from lack of support by those around them. I know Obama is a smart guy but he is provided talking points and well prepared speeches which he delivers beautifully. I just don't trust that those behind the scenes will operate in my best interest or the best interest of the country (Dick Cheney for example and his influence on the nation without the visibility).

For the zealots, beware the blind pursuit of a candidate. Be objective and open to other points of view. If you surround yourself with zealots and participate in a self love fest it will feel great but like the last election you might find yourself very surprised by the outcome. Too many said "I can't believe Bush was elected. Everyone I know voted for Kerry". It's the ones you don't know you should fear.

Let's see - who controls the Senate and the House?? Who promised to end the war? Who promised to save the world? Oh, yeah, the democrats that took over the majority of both houses. And what have they done?? Oh yeah, that's right!!! NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! And to the one who made more money than I will ever see in one lifetime? I say GOOD FOR YOU!! But if Obama is president, the next person who made more money than I will ever see in my lifetime will pay WAY more taxes that you've ever paid...that's his goal!!! I say, if you make it, keep it. I don't begrudge anyone who has lots of money that right!!! It's called the American Dream ...remember Obama sold it the other night. So, part of that is the right to make as much money as you can. And I do pay taxes for gov't funded programs, and I have a brother in the service for 24 years...and I have no doubts he works harder than me.

We'll see what happens...you all live in your "life is beautiful, Obama will save us" bubble. Don't get too comfortable, becauase it's gonna burst soon!!! HA HA

You try to hide your true agenda by claiming to be conservatives. You wouldn't know

what conservatism was if it hit you in the face. McCain and the real Republican Party

should reject the support of all you Nazi worshipers. Stop hiding and show your true face;

start your own party and see how far you get. You think you have the inherent right to this

land and to hell with everyone else. You think you have a monopoly on patriotism, and

everyone who does not fit your Nazi mold should get out. Most of you have not spent one

day in service of any kind to this country; yet you think you have the right to smear those

who have. You nitpick about non-issues and even resort to lies in trying to tear down a

person’s character and reputation; why? Because you can't compete on the real issues

that matters to this country.

Hey Get_Real:

McCain voted against the "Violence against Women Act"? I don't know the details of this act, but I do know where I live a man can go to prison because of a rumor that he hurt a woman. The state prosecutes based on any perceived evidence, and the man must prove the evidence is faulty. That sounds like a presumption of guilt, and anyone who thinks the judicial system already favors women in alleged domestic violence cases is OK in my book.

We have good criminal laws, why don't you simply go about making sure they're enforced?

I was a strong supporter for Hillary Clinton. But after she was left out of the VP position for the Democratic party I have thought about voting for McCain With the nonination on Gov. Palin I definately am going to vote for McCain now. Any woman who can run a household of five children and a marriage and a governorship of any state deserves our votes. I think it is a stroke of genius. (I just wonder if Obama’s campaign wish they had

nominated Hillary now). I hope McCain gets the votes of all those women

AFA what I want in the White House (and in the Congress, and on SCOTUS) are constructionists who will administer their duties by the letter and intent of the Constitution, wihtout all this "living constitution" nonsense.
