I think women will connect with Sarah Palin. She looks like someone you might want to know. She has executive and legislative experience. She's an athlete and a former beauty queen. And she's the working mother of five children. Given that she's from Alaska, her views on guns and drilling for oil make a lot of sense. As to her anti-abortion stance, the women who have fought to preserve Roe v. Wade are moving past child bearing age and the women who need that protection failed to adequately support a female candidate who would have protected it. Not my problem. In addition, Sarah Palin must have known that her son had Downs Syndrome early enough to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Given her choice, even though I don't agree with her, I respect her anti-abortion stance. She walked her talk.

As a life long democrat I have to say that I will, for the first time ever, vote for a republican.

She is what this contry needs: some fiscal responsibility after 8 years of Bush.

Sorry Obama, but I just can't afford your tax and spend platform. Unfortunately, your "change" has turned out to be just more of the same old tired rhetoric. We need action, not your polorizing politics. You turned out to be a disappointment.

Well, an unknown personality who does not have much of a political life on her own. This pick as VP has sealed the deal for Barack Obama. McCain consistently attacks Obama lack of experience yet he picks up a VP candidate who has done nothing in the public eye.

We will still give the benefit of doubt studying her background. McCain's judgment of picking a candidate who in time of crisis or for God sake if something happens to him if he is elected President, is she going to be the person that the American people will depend on? I guess he made a mistake not picking Mitt Romney or Tim Paulaenty of Minnesota. Remember McCain is the oldest Presidential candidate in the history of the United States of America. Than again, it is his pick to be his running mate. We ought to respect him for that.

OK. So McCain's gonna pick an unknown, unqualified running mate from a state with 3 electoral votes? What's the catch? Oh yeah. She's purty. Ahhh. What a wonderful display of McCain's depth and intelligence. How better can he show the American people that he "Puts America First" than by opting on a gimmick play for his first and most important hiring decision.

Does choosing Palin demonstrate a desire for strong leadership? Experience? Character? I think if that was McCain's motivation there are a couple hundred superior choices. What would motivate McCain to choose her other than her gender. Nothing that couldn't be found in much higher concentration in other candidates. No. If Stumper is correct (and I kinda doubt he is) McCain would be showing how little respect he has for voters by trying to lure Hillary supporters and other women by dangling bait that is all style and no substance. It would be beyond insulting, especially to women, to think we can be lured like a dog with a piece of cheese.

I can't believe that McCain would be so foolish. But as an Obama supporter, I hope Stumper's right. Obama won a primary against a real woman. I don't think he'll have much trouble beating a little girl.

I guess all those that criticize Obama, for inexperience, will have a field day, with McCain choosing Sarah Palin, for his VP. 2 years ago, she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska... population under 6,000. Is she ready to be President??

She's also under investigation for abuse of power.

All-in-all, while I've thought for weeks he'd name Palin, and would love to see a woman President, this is a bad choice - - showing poor judgment.

McCain is 73 years old, more than most Pres candidates, he needed to be thinking about America, rather than getting Hillary's disaffected voters... and choose someone who could take over as Pres. And that she's under investigation... it's more of the same GOP - - Abramoff, etc.

And the hypocrisy, after attacking Obama endlessly on lack of experience... she's more *ready* than Obama?

Really poor judgment by McCain.

I think this is yet another Republican stunt, and I think McCain is: a) Trying to appeal to female voters, specifically all the bummed-out Hillary fans; and b) Trying to match Obama's own history-making candidacy as the first African-American by having the first Republican female vp candidate.

If you want to talk qualifications, fine: Palin is younger than Obama, has less experience, and is less educated than both Obama and Biden AND both their wives (who are ALSO working mothers), making this the most hypocritical move of McCain's yet. I sure hope this means I don't have to see any more low-blow "inexperienced" and "unqualified" attack ads against Obama.

This VP choice just reinforces McCain and his entire party; instead of acting like responsible adults who argue maturely and explain clearly what they believe in and what they intend to do with the presidency, they just use distraction techniques and capitalize on ignorance and fear. It's sad.

A resounding hurrah just went up in my office. Five women in my office ages 25 to 59 just cheered the choice of Palin and we are all in agreement that we weren't even thinking of voting at all and now we have a reason to vote. I will even put a bumper sticker on my car for the first time ever. The last thing I put on a car was an American Flag after 9/11 (and it's still there). These women include a single 30 year old woman, a married 25 year old whose husband is in the Army reserve, a divorced 59 year old woman, a 35 year old married woman with an autistic child, and me, a 55 year old woman with a stepson in the Air Force. I think this will choice will bring a lot of female voters out now who weren't planning to vote at all. I'm excited about an election for the first time in years!

Early reactions from the right wing (and sorry MarkRidgewood, no one believes you're a Democrat) are hilarious. Every single thing that made Obama "unelectable" now makes Palin a perfect choice.

I have been giggling all morning. Joe Biden will clean the floor with Sarah Palin in the debates. She's under investigation for improper use of government power. Her only experience is less than 2 years as a governor and 4 years on a city council. Has she even been over seas? She from a state with 3 electoral votes that were leaning Red anyway. She is an unknown figure, which means the McCain campaign will have to spend time and money introducing her to America (and they are already on a defined budget).

Here is what someone wrote in the Washington Post comments from readers, which totally sums up my sentiments:

Sarah Palin is in no way, shape or form anything of the stature and experience of Hillary Clinton. Most of her supporters will gladly vote for the Obama-Biden ticket. A formidable team, with complementary skills and capabilities, who inspire courage, optimism and respect around the world.

Contrast that with a 72-year-old man whose health is not robust, coupled with a 44-year old church lady with five kids and ZERO overseas travel, no foreign policy credentials. Guess who will be calling all the shots? McCain!

We will be the laughing stock among our enemies - easy target for picking off our president and allowing a totally shallow, inexperienced church lady to become our President.

All for the sake of the Religious Right and the option to drill in Alaska. Once again, the GOP putting us in jeopardy with a misjudged choice and greed to appease the major oil companies.

Any women who view this selection of Palin as a "triumph" are sorely mistaken. She was picked to window dress the GOP's true agenda - lying, cheating, war mongering and stealing elections -- and all for the sake of drilling in Alaska. It was a cynical choice, and ill-advised - I guess the GOP is planning on losing this Fall coz I for one sure don't feel "safer" with an aging old fart and a totally underqualified person as our top leaders. I feel that our country will become an easy target for mayhem, terrorists around the world will view this a huge opportunity to cripple America.

Her husband works for British Petroleum and instead should be working for the former American owned Arco Oil Company. Arco Oil Company developed and explored the Alaska North Slope and formerly owned eighty percent of our proven Alaskan reserves. With its substantial oil reserves Arco Oil Company should have bought British Petroleum instead of British Petroleum buying out Arco Oil Company during the second Bill Clinton administration.

Under the 1982 United Nations Law of the Seas Convention the US has an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles and mineral seabed rights up to 350 nautical miles extending along the Continental shelf. A nautical mile is 6080 feet so our exclusive economic zone extends about 240 miles and mineral seabed rights extend 420 miles. The US has the world's largest offshore exclusive economic zone totaling 4.4 million square miles. In comparison, the total land area of the United States is only 3.4 million square miles. On the East coast alone, if you drive from Key West Florida to Bangor Maine it is 2000 miles. Multiply the 2000 miles by mineral seabed rights extending out 420 miles results in a total of 840,000 square miles of ocean acreage. Because we have the world's largest offshore coastline which is twenty-eight percent greater than our land area, it only makes simple common sense that we exploit our offshore resources to achieve our energy independence.

Only one percent of the world's commercial ships are built in US shipyards. Hold your breath for the Democratic outcry and push for government help to US ship builders to build oil drilling ships in the US.

Lets at least get some facts straight. 1. Wolves are not endangered. At least not in Alaska. We have so many of them they were killing peoples pets in the Largest city, Anchorage. Has she ever hunted wolves, i don't know, but i can't find anything that says she did and there definitely isn't anything that says she shot wolf pups. 2. Drilling in ANWR? You bet! An area that equates to 2% of something about the size of New Hampshire and is vital to the continued Alaska economy. So wow, she supports keeping her own state going. 3.Pro Life - Yes again, but for some people (most republicans) that's a good thing.

Are you people totally insane or have you all lost your marbles like McCain has. The chances of McCain actually living through his would be term is slight. Do you really want Barbie to be the next president. Now you can all set around and watch stupid movies like "Legally Blonde" and think the world revolves around some Disney version of life, but now is the time to grow up and look around you. The world is leaving us behind and if we don't get with it, the best you can hope for your kids is to be able to say "Do you want fries with that".

This is no time for joking around and playing like this game is really fun. $4.00 gasoline, no jobs, no health care, housing mess, rising cost of food, cost of education out the top, kids unable to read. That's the list of serious problems. Do you really think Susie Shopper is ready to handle any of these things. We don't have to woo Alaska foks, it belongs to us. We don't have to appease the women of the world. When you have a champion get knocked out of the race, you don't put in the a novice as some sort of compensation.

This is an insult to every American. If John McCain thinks so little of our country and the problems that we are facing, that this is the best he can do, then he doesn't even deserve to be in government at all. Admittedly, I was on the fence until this point. However, I have to agree with the_shelton. The idea of this woman possibly being president completely terrifies me. How would the world view us? Could we put our economic and international security in the hands of this unknown? The experience of your VP pick is crucial when your a septuagenarian. This choice really has set me back.

I was moved to tears by mccain's announcement of palin as his running mate. Congratulation Governor Palin. The dems passed up the opportunity to nominate the best candidate for the office, Sen. Clinton. They further passed up the opportunity to redeem themselves by nominating her as their vp.

I'm not sure that mccain's decision to nominate her will help him win the Office, but is absolutely wonderful he gave a woman the opportunity to be the vice president of the United States. Again, Congratulation, Governor Palin.

Bottom line is John McCain wasnt running a "lets have freh ideas, and happy thoughts" campaign; he was running a "we need an experienced, defense minded candidate" campaign. John McCain has just done what I thought was impossible.

In a single stroke, he has proved in a demonstrable way to possess judgment just as appalling, if not far worse, than George W. Bush.

At least when Bush was appointing dangerously inept and mediocre candidates to positions of high office, none of them stood within a heartbeat of his job.

Whether he knows it or whether the GOP, with its suicide-pact tendencies will admit it, McCain has screwed himself and his party. I for one will not support his bid to do it to the rest of us.

I am confused. If all of these Democrats are so shocked and terrified about the inexperience of Sarah Palin, why are they not shocked and terrified about their own inexperienced candidate. Talk about being disingenuous! The Lady may turn out to be more tuned into our domestic issues than any of the Gentlemen in the game. Women are tired of men who think they know how women think. Palin is an execellent choice! While Obama and Biden both couldn't make it through one simple introduction of the VP without each of them screwing up (Obama introducing Biden as next POTUS and Biden calling Obama "Barack America" ) Sen. McCain steals the show from the Democrats with Palin as his pick! The introduction was exciting, sincere and well done without any mis-speaks. One begins to ask...not seeing any senior moments from McCain but we sure are seeing alot of JUNIOR MOMENTS from Obama ( I'm in Saint Louis. I'm in Kansas City).

Back to Palin....She has more Executive experience as #2 than Obama does in the #1 spot. Go figure. Palin will be a quick understudy for the Presidency...she's smart, she 's gutsy, she knows how to get things done and she's not beholden to lobbiests! Women make up at keast 50% of the people in the US so there should be a woman on the ticket. Palin is a fantasic choice. She was actually making Change while Obama was and still is just talking about it. Another thing...at least the McCains and the Palins weren't kissing each other on the lips like Obama did to Biden's wife. Yuck what a politically incorrect thing to do not to mention it is poor, poor business etiquette! Very disrespectful to kiss another man's wive in front of him and in front of your own wife. I let the "sweetie" comment slide but that kissing thing was just grossly POLITICALLY INCORRECT. Is Obama going to go to Iran and kiss the wives of the heads of state in that country? He'd get them shot dead.

If he doesn't know political etiquette for his own country I don't have faith he will know political etiqutte for when he is traveling to other countries.

To The Shelton....I have heard some pretty sexist comments from bloggers since Palin was announced and I'd have to say yours are right up there with the most sexist.

To compare Palin to Barbie and Legally Blonde just speaks volumes to your stupidity and sexism.

It compares to the Obama supporters that have posted saying they are going to vote for Obama because he is "hot". This isn't American Idol folks.

Palin is gutsy, intelligent, professional, can speak well (without a teleprompter no less),) has actually ACCOMPLISHED Change not merely talk about doing it, she isn't beholden to lobbiests or special interest, and actually has more executive experience than Obama does! Lastly, unlike Obama, she feels a born alive child has rights to live it's life, whereas Obama doesn't (maybe because born alive babies can't vote?).

Well it seems the democrats are not happy with any thing and will go to the ends of the earth to discredit people. Sarah palin’s 17y/o daughter is pregnant but so is 2 million other unmarried teens in America! But because its Mrs. Palin’s kid that makes her a bad parent or not in touch with her children…. I guess all the other parents of the other 2 million are bad as well! But wait her husband got a d.u.i. 22 yrs ago and had an accident that caused some property damage so he’s an awful person according to the liberal democrats! It makes no difference that Joe biden is a long time big government spender all the while he claims to be a regular guy! He says I ride Amtrak everyday to work and home he fails to mention that that Amtrak ride costs 97 dollars a day! That’s about the amount of money that 25% of the low income Americans make day and he spends it on Amtrak yeah he a regular Joe! And barrack Obama well he’s no angel either he’s got some pretty bad bill’s hidden in his closet not to mention his admitted marijuana and cocaine use years ago but lets not talk about that says the liberal media lets talk about mr.palin’s d.u.i. Or the 17 y/o’s pregnancy this liberal bias in the media is getting a little aggravating but I think that the American people will see that this whole thing is leaning to far left and it will back fire in obama’s face costing him the chance at being the leader of the free world! It’s a shame that our election process has come to this!

It is obvious that the democrats and leftist liberals have never been to Alaska. I think that everyone should know not to poke a grizzly bear with a stick and wake it up because it will be very angry and attack! Now factor in a cub that’s there and you’ve really got a problem! This is what the liberal has done by attacking Sarah palin and her daughter Bristol. She may have been hurt and had some resentment about accepting the v.p.offer, however now she is angry and will fight with all her might. she is a force to be reckoned with! She is very smart and not afraid to lay it on the line. Some politicians don’t go to certain areas against their opponents out of respect for the office and the need to work with them in the future. But Sarah palin don’t she will get rid of her problems by laying it all out for the world to see and the opponent will be eliminated! So watch this lady in action now and don’t be too surprised when she takes on the media or the biggest liberal organization out there! There will be heads rolling! P.s. Obama might have been to Alaska before because he said that families are off limits he may know a thing or two about grizzly bears!
