What worries me most about McCain/Palin ticket is their environmental policy (especially regarding drilling in the ANWR). I think it is evermore important for us, as consumers to support 'green businesses' that benefit the environment. Unlike many of today's politicians, she embraces her pro-life beliefs and doesn't sweep them under the carpet in order to appease both pro-life and pro-choice voters. No Flip-Flops? Didn't she support the Bridge to Nowhere before she voted against it? Oh, I'm sorry, she only supported it because she was running for Governor at the time and needed the votes. C'mon, more business as usual in politics. Right now she's against abortion in the cases of rape and incest. I'm wondering how long it will take her to change her position (or her handlers to restate/spin it) when that view is publicized and used as ammo against the McCain/Palin ticket.

Palin should re-evaluate her support for abstinence-only education, given that her own daughter has been having unprotected sex. Obviously it did not work in her house. Does Palin still believe we should keep other children from learning the truth about their own health and sex?

She now has a 4 month-old special needs baby and a pregnant teenager in her house. Neither she nor her husband should be out running a national campaign. Babies need their parents around. So do teenagers.

I feel sorry for the Palin daughter, because 17 is too young to be having children. She hasn't even fully experienced her own childhood yet. Her condition also explains her "deer in the headlights" look during the announcement of her mother's selection.

As for the speech her mother made about supporting her decision to keep the child and marry the father, isn't it nice that she HAS a CHOICE. I wonder if Sarah Palin would support her daughter as eagerly if her CHOICE was not to have the child? I doubt very much this little girl HAD much personal CHOICE, considering how her mother explains her own position on these matters.

Sounds like Mom and Dad were asleep at the wheel--I understand the Palin children are home-schooled. If you're going to take on that serious responsibility, you must accept the consequences of what you teach; your children deserve no less.

And wasn't the high rate of teen pregnancy supposed to be the result of LIBERAL policies? Hollywood, and all that?

Again, my sympathies are with the 17-year-old; she is taking on a huge responsibility and having to do it in the glare of a presidential campaign. Guess the campaign outweighs family. I notice her mother implores that we not bother her daughter, in the spirit that prevails with candidates children. I doubt the young Ms. Palin will be married before election day, because that would automatically change her status to Mrs. Something, and as a free, independent (we think) woman, she is not off-limits. There they go again with that conservative hypocrisy. Sad, indeed.

It was my recollection that the Pledge of Aliegance did not exist and was not used by "our Founding Fathers," as Palin's comment indicates that she believes. According to Wikipedia, the Pledge of Aliegance was written by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist Minister, in 1892. Interestingly, it also said that Francis was a cousin to a Socialist: Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy. So Palin is interestingly supporting a pledge created by a relative of a "card carrying" socialist. She does not know here history.

She prefers private education over pubic education, she does not believe that there should be more public education for, say, pre-school, she does not believe in sex education for children that could get pregnant (such as her now pregnant daughter), she believes that parents should opt out of their children learning things they do not agree with (such as science), Pretty scary, IMHO.

I heard someone describe Palin as "definitely having the work/life balance thing figured out". As a working mother of 3, I can say "absolutely not!". I seriously question her family values when she decides to jump on the campaign trail with a 4 month old SN child, meanwhile putting her 17-year old pregnant daughter in public spotlight.

As a litmus test, I asked myself, "would I trust this woman to be CEO of the company I work for?" My answer is "absolutely not". She should be preoccupied with her family and putting them as number one right now. To think she could potentially be just a heart beat away from the most important job in the world is ridiculously crazy.

Members of 'Fringe' Alaskan Independence Party Say Palin Was a Member in 90s

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

NOTE: Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

"We are a state's rights party," says Clark, a self-employed goldminer. The AIP has "a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law."

She says it's not accurate to describe the party as secessionist -- they just want a vote, she says, adding that the members of the AIP hold different opinions on what Alaska should be.

"My own separate opinion as an individual is that we should be an independent nation," Clark says. Others in the AIP "believe that being a commonwealth would be a good avenue to follow." Some advocate statehood -- but a fuller statehood than exists now.

She doesn't know what Palin's position was.

"It never came up in conversation," Clark recalls. "But when she joined the party, our platform was right under her nose."

Clark says that Palin left the party and became a Republican in 1996, when she first ran for mayor of Wasilla.

The McCain-Palin campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The AIP platform states that the purpose of the party is to "seek the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska in conformance with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17, of the federal constitution ... To prohibit all bureaucratic regulations and judicial rulings purporting to have the effect of law, except that which shall be approved by the elected legislature ... To support the privatization of government services ...”

Walter Hickel, a former Republican governor, was elected to the governorship in 1990 as an AIP member -- the third-largest party in Alaska -- with a plurality vote of 38.8%. A Seattle Post-Intelligencer story that year said that "Hickel is running with the Alaska Independence Party, a fringe group advocating that the 49th state declare itself a sovereign nation. That's because they forget one of the most important lessons in the bible - only God can judge. Sarah Palin, a strong right to life Governor , chose to have her special needs child but she also chose to further her own career campaigning for VP rather than caring for that child. This innocent 5 month old baby needs his mother nurturing him and early intervention to limit his disability. Its easy to deliver a handicapped baby but its hard to raise one. God bless the parents who chose to give up their jobs for the sake of their special needs children, many face financial hardship to do so but they would not change their decision because of their family values.

What I would like to do is engage in intelligent debate over some real issues affecting our nation, like achieving 100% energy independece, fostering job growth and entrepreneurial innovation, balancing the federal budget so we can strengthen the dollar, transfering security of Iraq over to the Iraqis, containing the dangerous policies and nuclear pursuits of Iran, and finding a way to provide health care for all without having the entire industry socialized by the government. Those are the issues that will have an impact on future generations, not the personal family matters of a VP contender.

Palin is lobbying for about $200 million in earmarks this year. Under her leadership her town received $27 million in earmarks. She started and ran a 527 committee with the help of Senator Stevens, one of the biggest pork procurers in the country. It appears that she supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" from the beginning until it became an embarrassment. She seems to be a selective type of reformer.

As far as family issues go, in my family we are concerned about keeping our kids safe, raising them to make good decisions, providing them with an education so that they can succeed in their working lives and hoping for the best. I don't see where any of Palin's policies have done anything but to hope for the best.

SJ71: In her own responses to the questions, Sarah Palin first says she supports "parents deciding what is the best education venue for their child" but then asked if she would support funding for abstinence-until-married education instead of explicit sex-education programs she says "yes" and that "the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support". Doesn't that sound hyprocrital to you? Doesn't the second response contradict the first?

She wants to impose her values on everyone else. I am fine with including absinence with other sex education topics. I am fine with parents electing to have their children opt-out of some or all of the sex education topics taught in school. I would even be fine with schools deciding not to teach sex education at all and leaving it up to the parents to teach their children. What I am not fine with is a self-righteous person like Sarah Palin imposing her own beliefs on me and my children.

There has been study after study showing the absitence only programs are not effective in reducing the number of teenage pregnacies. Her own daughter's situation only highlights that point. The fact that she and other conservatives want to impose their beliefs on others (and in this case it is especially infuriating because it has been proven time and time again that this particular belief is flawed) that makes this an issue.

And when some of us liberals bring this up, it is you conservatives that attack. In your own comments, you said to me "Or would you have preferred that she told nobody, had the baby in an alley, then dump the baby in a dumpster"

Did I ever condemn her for getting pregenant? No. Did I every express any ill will towards her, her unborn child, or the reset of her family? No. All I did was express my amusement at the irony that a woman who believes in absinence only sex education, who wants to impose that belief on everyone else, has a an unwed daughter that is pregnant.

That's the real difference between liberals and conservatives. Liberals have a live and let live attitude, whereas conservatives believe that they know what is best for everyone and want to impose their narrow view of the world on everyone else.

As far as the rest of the topics you mentioned at the end of your post, I do not disagree that they are also important. Just don't trivalize this issue. It is a clear reflection on how this woman thinks and what she would be like if McCain wins and she had to step into his shoes. And I find it very scary.

She does NOT support Abstinence-only education. She simply wants abstinence to be promoted along side birth control.

And I must say, liberals do NOT generally have a live-and-let-live attitude. They tend to condemn those who do not have the same "live-and-let-live" attitude. In this matter, liberals and conservatives seem to be on equal footing. It's okay to disagree. But lets not fool ourselves into thinking that one side is somehow more noble about it than the other.

The vast majority of liberals have no issues with conservatived believing as they do, as long as they don't try to apply those beliefs to us. But that is the problem - they do. They want us to share their narrow-minded self-righteous view of the world. And we refuse.

Doesn't all this seem like a cheap daytime talk show episode?. Or, how about a reality TV show. Ms. Palinv can appear right after Hulk Hogan and before Paris Hilton. sadly, it seems like Ms. Palin is a "celebrity too". And soon, Levi Johnson is going to be a household name, and I'm sure he'll write a book about why his site proclaims he is "single and looking", while Ms. Palin says he agreed to get married to her daughter. Her daughter Bristol can have the baby, then do a Levi's (jeans) commercial to make ends meet, and then write her book. Hopefully, the angry, embittered State Trooper will not write a tell-all too. Can't wait to see what her sister has to say about all this. If we are lucky though, there will not be any more news on her wanting to separate Alaska from the US. Whew. Reality TV at it's worst.

You're correct in the notion that many evangelical Christian conversatives (of which I am NOT by the way) try to impose their moral beliefs on others. I happen to completely disagree with these folks, as I'm more moderate when it comes to social issues. I'm conservative on fiscal and national security issues. As for my "dumpster" comment to you earlier, I offer my apologies. You're correct in that you never condemed this girl for getting pregnant... I do, however, have to take great issue with your comment "That's the real difference between liberals and conservatives. Let's not just accuse conversatives of this behavior. Liberals also try to control your thoughts and actions in many ways. They want to regulate speech, a.k.a. The Faireness Doctrine. They reserve the sole right to determine what is and isn't hate speech. They want to dictate where my children go to school and what type of car I'm allowed to drive. And the more successful I get, the more of my money they want to confiscate since they believe that I'm not capable of making good spending decisions. They want to take away my right to own a handgun to defend my home, and they want to force me into a government-run national healthcare system. So there are plenty of examples where liberals try to control thought and action as well.

Anyway, thanks for offering some interesting points for me to ponder.

SJ71: Just like you, I am not on board with all the liberal positions. I am fine with people owning guns - but I do believe in background checks and and waiting periods. I am not a big fan of socialized medicine - but I do believe that something has to be done to make insurance more affordable to lower income families. I believe people should be able to speak their mind, even if it is hate speech - but if they incite people to violence, they should be held accountable for the results. I can go on and on, but I think you get the point.

I don't disagree that liberals also have an agenda - but all in all, I think the liberal agenda is less intrusive to personal liberties. And most importanty, the agenda is not based on religous convictions, which I find very scary.

The whole war against terrorism wouldn't exist if it weren't for a small group of radical extremists that twist the Islamic faith to their benefit... One of these days I would love for a major political party to arise that reflects both my fiscal conversative views as well as my more moderate social views. And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

She says it's not accurate to describe the party as secessionist -- they just want a vote, she says, adding that the members of the AIP hold different opinions on what Alaska should be.

She doesn't know what Palin's position was.

"It never came up in conversation," Clark recalls. "But when she joined the party, our platform was right under her nose."

Clark says that Palin left the party and became a Republican in 1996, when she first ran for mayor of Wasilla.

The McCain-Palin campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

McCain with one foot in the grave knocks Obama on experience and then McCain goes out picks for his VP one of a handful of people who have less eperience than Obama.

How is asking questions about Palin's experience, scandals, family in any way sexist?

Does anyone know if those "party" pics of Palin's daughter (who is now 17 & pregnant) are real or photo-shopped? If they are real then McCain is in even more trouble.

It doesn't appear that McCain spent a lot of time in his VP selection, looks like he's only focused on pulling in the Hillary votes.
