To have a shot at being a competent President or VP, you must have either experience or keen intellect, preferably both. Having one or both is no guarantee of success, but lacking both is a disaster waiting to happen.

McCain has plenty of experience, but not much intellect.

Obama has intellect to spare, but not much experience.

Biden has both, but Palin has neither.

I'm not saying she's dumb. Far from it. But she has not shown any indication that she can easily and quickly absorb the kind of information and skill sets necessary for the task. We don't need another Dan Quayle in the #2 slot.

Also, all "foreign policy" credits you are giving Obama are silly. I am sure some reporters accompanied Obama on those trips. Does that make them foreign policy experts too? And sponsoring a bill in congress does not in anyway prepare one to make competent "in-the moment" decisions on the correct use of diplomacy and military force, now does it? You're argument, like the arguments of all of your left wing brethren are 100 percent spin and 0 percent relevant to the facts at hand. The fact is that you are comparing your Presidential candidates foreign policy "experience" to that of the republican Vice President candidate, because you know if you compare Obama to McCain, Obama will look like a cub scout. Its laughable. The best part is, Palin still has much more executive experience than Obama, who has never even run a bake sale much less a state or any government entity. So its still a losing argument. I'd rather have an experienced leader who needs to be brought up to speed on certain issues, than someone who has never been responsible for anything.

Because of Obama's youth and megalomaniacal nature, the only one on your ticket that has any notable experience (biden) would be relegated to "parade duty" and appearances at state fairs.

If this is McCain's supposedly superior judgement, the Republicans (and possibly the American people) are in trouble. What I find most troubling is the cavalier and less than thorough way McCain made this very important judgement call. It does not bode well for a McCain-Bush-Cheney-Palin administration. Why would it make a difference who helps Mrs. Palin understand our allies and enemies overseas? Just because someone worked for President Bush, doesn't mean that person will try to make everything look like if would to President Bush.

I think Mrs. Palin has a Frontier mind of her own and will take any information given by anyone and chew it. After all, she took the crap from her counterparts in the Alaska State government and spit it back at them to their detriment.

Palin makes it rediculous that any of the other Republican possibilities who have the knowledge and experience were not selected by McCain who made this political choice inorder to gain the womens vote. Here's a thought. Why don't we just elect the team that is instructing her as Vice President. This way in case we actually need to call upon the Vice President, say in case the President is unable to act as President, we will at least have people who know what they are talking about and not someone who needs to read the Cliff notes before addressing a crisis.

All, i've been reading a lot of articles and peoples comments today about whether or not Palin will trip up and cost the GOP the election. Please read this and know that i am an independent with no bias who tries to choose based on the individual. Unfortunately, my democratic friends do not realize that no matter how well Obama is liked, as long as the polls show that there is a close enough race within 10 points or so, the republicans will always win from now on. There will never be a Democratic President again. It has now been proven over and over again that many of the voting results in many counties accross the country are manipulated by local GOP officialls to disohnestly misrepresent the true results. This happens during elections even down to a local level. Does anybody understand this? there is nothing you can do. The Dems in office are doing nothing about this. The Reps will paint them as sore loosers. I guess when your friends are dying every day only for the reason that Arms Race Businessmen can maintain profit margins, it is not enough for the DNC to risk their reputations. How come the media has never made a bigger deal out of this? I think you know why. If you dont, it's because there are only really 5 TV statons in this country. Yes 5. You can look it up. It's all owned by the 5 same companies. They would never risk the republican smear/boycott campain if they ever aired something that would really blow your mind as well as the lid off some of the greatest scams in our country. As long as there are republicans who will resort to the measures that they are willing to in order to win, there is nothing you can do. Unfortunately you are a victim. I voted for Obama during the primary here in CA because it wasnt against a Republican. I'll still vote but trust me, as long as the polls show that its a tight race. They WILL steal it! A high school friend of mine had an old Maverick. It had lots of miles and was pretty run down. It didn't always start in the winter, and it overheated pretty easily if you drove it to far. On the highway it generally pulled to the right, but it could change direction in an instant - almost so fast you couldn't remember the original direction.

Of course it used a ton of gas, burnt oil and created clouds of smoke. But every time my buddy got pulled over, he'd tell the cops the car had been towed and spent a long time in the pound. For some reason, that excuse seemed to work all the time…

Selection of Sarah Palin as VP candidate has becone a spectacle... This newest headline on assembling a host of former Bush administration folks to "tutor" her on foreign policy (and likely many other major "topics") just underscores her total lack of qualification. As a female executive (and mother of 3), I almost feel embarrassed for her. Maybe we should be questioning HER judgement along with Senator McCain's. Why on earth -- when you have a good job, a loving family that is facing, and will continue to face, everyday problems -- would she put herself in this position? It is not "love of country" to step into a job of such grave importance (especially in light of the plight of everyday Americans) -- it is simply a thirst for power and no doubt she is enjoying seeing her photos splashed on TV. That is all we have seen, is her supposed attractivemeness with little or no substance. I would have much more respect for her if she chose to make her family her top priority and stop this sideshow right now... her kids will suffer and in the end this "maverick" decision by McCain will assure the Democratics win the election. At least she will be off the hook and can go back to Alaska with a great adventure story to tell.

There are thousands of bright, articulate women in the workplace today who could be a VP candidate if they had the tutoring, prep and everything else she will be given..... so she is nothing special even though the Republicans will try to make her out to be. What a pathetic snapshot of American politics today.

By his thoughtless choice during a time when there are significant challenges to our country, he makes a mokery of his own slogan of "Country First". This is ego-first, old time politics-first, and it is a disgrace. Not to mention a slap in the fact to the many qualified candidates who should be in the VP slot today (man or woman)!

This briefing on foreign policy is what is offered to every candidate on a major national ticket. A few decline it. Most accept. The major media always try to make it sound like it is uniquely done for younger Republican nominees. Have people forgotten that this election is about John McCain? The VP pick is subordinate to the policy stances and ideology of the PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES!! McCain is drifting further and further to the right wing every day, and it is in direct contrast with the platform he was on for the entire scope of his political career. McCain has run such a two-faced campaign, he might as well have auditioned for the Dark Knight instead of running for President. He is not intellegent enough to steer our country, and Obama is going to slay him in the debates; remember, the general American electorate is not as simplistic in their views as the Saddleback crowd.

As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, she seems nice enough; in total contrast with my views on social agenda, but well intentioned enough. However, I don't feel that she has done enough to be fluent in the issues that face America outside of the GOP wardrum issues. She isn't prepared to be President, and McCain would be the oldest and most health challanged President in history.

Regardless, i have no issue with her daughter's situation. It is a difficult position for a child to be in, and she is fortunate to have a strong family to support her; but Palin has an infant, and soon a two (lets be real, when a child has a child, the grandparents do the lions share of the parenting, and rightly so), as wel as a son being deployed, and two more young kids wth the needs that all kids have. It is far to complicated of a situation to be one breath away from the most complicated job in our nation.

I just wish that the media would focus on the relevant, not the tabloid style "easy target" stories; and Republicans, stop it with the victim crys, you are making Palin's situation more of a covered story than anyone else.

Now I can rest easy....Palin is being trained by those foreign policy experts who brought us the last eight years! Are they going to train her in every area "where her resume is conspicuously thin"? Gee, and I thought a politician needed years of experience to qualify for high public office.

So what will they do to prepare her to function as President, should McCain get elected and something happen to him?

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Bush wasn't going to speak at the convention so that McCain could distance himself from the Bush "legacy" (while still supporting many of the same "policies"). Instead, Bush will address the convention by satellite. So not to worry, folks, "neither the president nor Vice President Cheney will be coming anywhere near St. Paul."

Sometimes, we get exactly what we have coming, what we have earned. I think the chickens are coming home to roost for the Republicans.

After months of belittling Obama for lack of experience, shouting, "I don't have a plan, but Obama's plan won't work because he doesn't have enough experience...", McCain selects a Vice Presidential candidate with ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE!

The primary reason to even have a vice president is to maintain a chain of command if the president is for any reason unable to lead. Secondarily, a vice president should have credentials to give our leadership a well versed area of experience.

The fact that McCain chose a woman is obvious, to try to draw female Democrat votes away from Obama. The fact that her daughter is pregnant is proof that McCain's advisors were in a hurry to come up with such a candidate that they didn't even look into her life at all before choosing her.

Sure, there are crackpots like Rush Lambo who say how unimportant the teen pregnancy situation is. That moron can only find good in Republicans, and to him, Democrats are demons from Hell.

Just remember how he's defended Bush through all of his idiot policies.

Truly, the teen pregnancy issue is something that thousands of American families face on a daily basis, so it shouldn't be a shock that it happens in the political circle.

The facts are these:

Obama knows his shortcomings, and selected a vice presidential candidate who can fill out his administration's needs.

Mccain selected a vice presidential candidate because she's a woman, and her lack of experience is nonexistant, and her family situation was unknown until it hit the headlines.

Do you want a president who will work to make our country great again, or do you want a president who's going to be surprised when he reads the Morning News?

And his choice of her suggests that the old John McCain — the bold, fighting Senate maverick — is back. (News that Palin’s daughter is pregnant should make no difference. The governor had disclosed the fact to McCain, and he, like the tolerant and wise person he is, accepted it.)

As a female executive, when Hillary was running, my thoughts were it would be great to see a woman in power. Palin is the worst kind of woman in executive position because she thinks she knows more than she does. Well, did you folks see that great photo op they have been showing on CNN of her sitting pretty with Barbie doll Cindy and sweet Barbara at high tea? Why wasn't she with the boys. What a terrible injustice to this woman who doesn't realize how they are using her. And as fast as Mac introduced her, they quickly removed her from the public eye. A child with Down's syndrome can grow amazingly with aggressive care and nurturing. Is that her husband's job or is getting a nanny? After reading about her pregnant daughter's boyfriend, I think she should do what she can to keep the daughter from marrying a boy who publicly says he doesn't want children. That child will be able to read that statement the rest of it's life. I notice she doesn't say they are engaged, just they will get married. Has anyone asked that boy how he feels about his? While she would be a heartbeat away from a powerful office, it is belittleing to American women for the republicans to use her as the prime example as the best female they have. And whenever reporters question her experience, the republicans get hysterical that CNN is picking on her. Campbell Brown asked a simple, direct question of a flack requesting one example of her experience in executive decision making in any position. This so enraged Mc Cain that he cancelled speaking with Larry King. Is this another example of that fine McCain temper we hear about? Americans deserve to ask whatever they want and to get answers. Send this woman home before it gets any more embarassing for her.

I think we may be underestimating Gov. Palin's current knowledge of foreign affairs and her ability to learn more

I would not be surprised if she knows more than mught be implied. For example, she probably reads Time, Newsweek, The Washington Post and New York Times regularly. In addition, I would be willing to wager she also has The Economist available to her. Many politicians I know have a binder of information pages by country and major issue from their readings, www.cia.org and The Economist to be able to know key issues when a foreign leader comes to their town.

The key is that with such a foundation, Gov. Palin should benefit enormously from the briefings. I am confident she will be able to separate the facts from the opinions being offered to her in her tutorials. But the tutorials will give her an update on United States policy on key issues in various regions.

With such low expectations being crafted for her, she could well, like Eliza Dolittle in "My Fair Lady" shine immensely. Never underestimate a determined student and she gives every impression she is bright and determined.

My bet is that palin is going to withdraw, soon! Before the first blood is even drawn in a debate and the republicans are going to quietly ask her to withdraw. Too much heat is coming out of her kitchen, the backlash from McCain making a decision that was purely based on attracting female voters has gotten obvious and now that bushies are coaching her the dems are going to have a field day with the extension of G.W's policies offense. This was what would have been considered a novel approach has turned in to a nightmare for the Republican party. If they drop her and bring in anybody but say Condi Rice they are going to look foolish and worse. The thing they didn't think about is how the age issue and health issues of McCain has now been brought closer to the spotlight because we ask "if he croaks, can she run the country?" And if she does, is she going to do it with the likes of Dick cheney with his hand up the back of her shirt moving her mouth? They're already prepping her for this as Vice President for goodness sakes!!

Obama is up an average of 6.4% over McCain, which is a huge bump, considering he went into the convention less than 2% ahead. Obama, Biden, Gore, the Clintons, all did great at the convention, but choosing Palin was like a Christmas present from McCain to the Dems.

It Finally Makes Since Now why he chose Gov. Palin. There Were several other females out there that had more qualifications that Gov. Palin to include Conde Rice and other with more experience. I.e. Senator McCain has made a political choice rather than a choice that reflects sound judgement as to a solid leader that could step-in should the need arise. Palin needing a tutor is the equivalent of a red-faced admission by the McCain campaign that Karen Walker from Will & Grace, I mean Palin, needs training wheels. In unstated fashion, it expressly implies that Palin is unqualified for the Vice Presidency.

Further, her claim that the Iraqi war is "God's will" is deeply offensive to soldiers who are admirably serving their country. It emphatically shows she out-of-touch -- a substantial lack of rationale and intellect with high-stakes domestic and world matters.

I was leaning slightly toward McCain but this bonehead move exemplifies his inept decision-making skills. I WILL NOT even remotely entertain the prospect of someone with her sort of off-kilter mentality to be one heart-beat away from the Presidency.

America is in dire need, and Americans richly deserve competent, visionary leadership in highest posts of our government. Palin falls substantially short of those thresholds.

Bush's decision (or the party's choice) not to appear in person, only underscores the problem with his administration and the Republican party as a whole.

Why would McCain's camp want to put Palin in the hands of these people? Makes me think the reason might be because McCain learned personally that if you can't debate fairly you can make stuff up and pull off a win. Bush did it to him in 2000 and it looks like Palin may need to make some stuff up in order to pull it off.

Everyone who is talking about Obama foreign policy experience didn't do well in civics class. You would've known that the Senate works with foreign policy everyday. McCain has lost his mind. They are taking a "Dancing with the Stars" approach to the GOP VP spot.

Do they really think that foreign policy and national security is nothing more than a fancy tap dance performance choreographed by actual professionals?

Will we see Palin's handler's feet behind the screen? Will they give her an earpiece that they can feed responses into during her debate with Biden?

I'm watching the GOP convention now and think it's too bad McCain didn't pick a fine actor like Fred Thompson as his running mate. Fred can at least recite his lines with a great speaking voice.

This is too funny. You might as well say she supports "accidental pregnancy". As a mother of 5, I can say that it just seems ridiculous to me that anyone can think this woman can be VP and raise her baby unless she plans to hand him off to someone else. I'll bet she isn't breast feeding. And now it's obvious why you see the oldest daughter holding him, she needs the practice.

Of course, we don't talk about men in the same way. Do men breast feed babies? What were these same people saying back when Quayle was running for VP? Does anyone remember the "family values" problem he had with the fictional character Murphy Brown? That a grown woman, completely self-supportive and mature, decided to keep her baby, was somehow a liberal view lacking in "family values".

I'm looking at hats at the convention with bearing buttons that say "I support unwed mothers". You mean NOW they support accidental pregnancy? Palin's daughter can be the poster child for why you should share the value of birth control with your teens.

And why isn't anyone mentioning that it is illegal to have sex with a minor? What kind of family value is she trying to sell us here? It's ok to have sex with a minor as long as you plan to have a shot gun wedding if a pregnancy occurs?

I really think picking Palin to run for a VP of the United States is a disgrace to the white house and for women of the republican party. Do you need to tell me that among all the women in public offices of the republican party, that is most qualified that McCain could find? First she comes with too much bagage. I think the rest of the world is watching and all they can say is " what is wrong with America". Lack of education, experience, been out on a foreign trip once in her life, under invistigation in her home state, knows nothing on foreing policy and now President's Bush's aides are running to her rescue to start tutoring her on foreign policy. I think if I start tutoring my freshman daughter now on foreign policy, she will be more ready to run for the white house in four years becasue it will be knowledge learned not knowledge borrowed and crammed over night to prepare for a debate. Yes, I guess if you're talking about the family values of the Spears family, the Palin family fits right in...with their 17-year-old pregnant daughter. There's really no excuse for a 17-year-old girl getting pregnant unless her parents aren't really monitoring her activities very well, etc. Also, as a politician, Sarah Palin is no different than the others, Democrat or Republican. She didn't hesitate to take advantage of Federal gifts to her town (earmarks) when mayor...and now she's casting herself as some kind of critic and reformer of Big Government. What a joke!

I think we should take all the stuff about Palin's pregnant daughter and other family issues off the table and simply judge her on her political strengths and weaknesses, which speak for themselves. These include:

1.Affiliation with the Alaska Independence Party - this is a political organization whose goals range from wanting independence from Federal government regulations to secession (which is treason in this country). Obama has been called unpatriotic for failing to wear a flag pin. Where does belonging to an organization like the AIP fit into the patriotic scheme of things?

2. Lack of relevant educational or professional experience. Despite all of the spin, a bachelor's degree in journalism, a few years as a largely figure-head mayor of a tiny Alaskan town and 18 months as governor of one of the least populated states with almost no financial problems do not add up to national experience. As governor, she has the power to call out the Alaska National Guard in an emergency, but that doesn't mean she has any involvement with defense. She has no legal background, so she will not have the depth of knowledge to understand our constitution, much less uphold it. She admits that she has little interest or knowledge in foreign affairs and doesn't think that government is "rocket science." It kind of is, maybe one of the hardest things in the world to understand.

3. Unlike Obama, who not only has had four years in the US Senate, including 18 months of a fast-paced, steep curve learning experience as he campaigned for president, Palin is going to have a couple of weeks before she has to get in front of cameras and pretend she knows something. It's an embarrassing set up for her.

4. In the short time she has been involved in state-wide government, she has become embroiled in an abuse of power case. She is affiliated with Ted Stevens, a GOP senator now under indictment.

This list goes on, with more things added every hour, as she is now "vetted" after the fact.

It is not being sexist to say that Palin has no discernable experiences or qualifications that would make her a suitable vice president, all family issues aside.

This further goes to question McCain's judgement. Palin needs a tutor and McCain enlists Bush's aids to help, but he's trying to distance himself from Bush! If McCain is elected as President, Palin is next in line to run our country and she's getting a crash course in foreign policy. It's obvious that she is not ready to be VP and McCain possibly being our next President scares me. I firmly believe if he is elected, it will be like having four more years of Bush.

We need to look at the big picture and elect the best possible person to run this country and repair the damage done over the years by Bush and not vote for or against a person based on race/gender.

If Sarah Palin is such a bad choice for a running mate, why are you on this, and so many other sites in such a uproar about her. For those of us undecided voters not under the spell of the "chosen one" - Obama's lack of exp as commander in chief worries us more than Palin's as VP. Mc Same has to die for her to run the country. Obama will start his first day in office trying to figure out the launch codes.

You have to know Obama has a team of advisors. Probabley some from the former President Clinton administration helping him through this crazy election process. Just how much can one person learn about the job in just a few short years. Lets be honest here.

Sure, dirkcoburn, every VP nominee gets a briefing and the smart ones take it. Cramming for a debate with spoon fed Cheney policy directives on everything she needs to even appear to be qualified won't salvage the Republican ticket. Simply confirms the likely tailspin into 4 more years that would be the result. Fortunately, for Governor Palin and for the USA, no further tutoring will be required after November. She was put on the ticket because Karl Rove wouldn't allow McCain's first choice, that is the only believable theory out there. The "talking points" repubs are using are laughable (she used line item veto power, she made tough decisions) in terms of readiness to hold the position of VP of the greatest nation in the world. Her choice because is an attractive woman or "great gal" (to quote Pat Buchanan and several old stodgy Republicans) is an insult to the intelligence of women, especially Hillary supporters. We've worked too hard to get where we are today to even pretend to buy into this. Nice of the GOP to go down by their own exposure of how out of touch with reality Bush, McCain and all of the other power mongers are with the REAL world.

I remember reading somewhere that when McCain chose her for his ticket, she asked what exactly does a VP do anyway? I wonder if McCain had to call someone to get the answer for her. Let's face it, if it comes down to a close race this November, then Palin has a serious chance of being the #2 leader of our country. Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, the most responsible thing to do is to learn as much as you can about each of the tickets to make an informed decision on whether that is a good thing, or a bad thing.

I'm really frustrated (as someone who previously voted for Bush) that there is no real substantive information out there on Palin. On the other hand, I can consult at least two books and review over two years worth of nationally-televised prior debates and speeches to evaluate Obama.

It isn't intellectually honest to support anyone or bash anyone blindly. Let's all praise or bash on the merits of full information.

All I know about Sarah at this point is that she is a woman, her daughter is pregnant, her son has Down's Syndrome, and there are allegations she used her office in Alaska to get her ex-brother in law fired. At the moment, I'm really appalled she'd put her daughter in this position...but I think the only reason why I and many others are focused on this tabloid news is that there's no policy debate to discuss yet. Sarah needs to face the press on her own really soon.

I live in Alaska and while I am a registered Democrat I like Sarah Palin and I think she has done a commendable job as governor of our state, however I do not think she is an appropriate choice as a vice presidential candidate. I am astounded at the way the Republicans are inflating her experience to try to make it commiserate to the other candidates. She was the mayor of a very small town (basically a bedroom community of Anchorage) and has been governor for less than 2 years. I keep hearing how she "took on" Ted Stevens...when was that? I live here and I don't remember that. We have had some significant corruption going on with our state legislators, but most of the investigation into that corruption was started prior to Governor Palin taking office. She has foreign policy experience because she is the governor of the state closest to Russia and she has been to Canada? Many of my friends and co-workers are getting a laugh out of that. I love Alaska and agree that we have some unique circumstances in our state, but in no way to those circumstances equate to the kind of experience necessary to assume a position like the vice presidency.

Obama has this election pretty much sown up. He gave another brilliant speech the last night of his convention, and it really shook up the McCain camp so they introduced Palin in a reaction to get some "bounce" and "media attention" since theirs was waning dreadfully.

I'm sitting a thome and listtening to the GOP convention in the background. It's smaller, older and a lot less energized. I had lunch w/ a Cuban American, age 35, female, who says she and all her Cuban-American friends in Miami are voting.......... FOR OBAMA. They are all Republican. But they think Obama is more conservative (fiscally) and more traditional and more in step with their own values.

That pretty much sums it up. I talk to people of all walks of life around the big city I live in - they are all voting for Obama - Jews, Gays, Blacks, Whites, Conservatives (not neo-cons or Bible thumpers), lawyers, doctors, teachers (especially teachers), bus drivers, cops, etc. I'm not saying everyone is totally for Obama, but they see him as the "lesser of the two evils" if they don't admire him outright.

McCain's background is much to focused on war, and he's still stuck in the Viet Nam era fighting the Liberals of his day. He's not polished, poised, or particularly well informed on much of anything besides war. His wife's father was convicted and imprisoned twice for his connections to Bugsy Segal and the Mafia - so his political support comes from the Mob and now, since he unveiled his VP pick, the Evangelicals.

He is not going to win and his party's on its last, aging legs. It needs an influx of new thinking, new ideas, new direction and an approach that is not so divisive. Obama's message is about bringing us all together, and even if you don't know or trust him as much as you'd like, I think you'll find a Harvard-educated, deep-thinking, soul searching and genuinely interested candidate a lot more reassuring than a trigger-happy tassled loafer rich boy whose "claim to fame" is his Viet Nam POW experience, which he brings up endlessly - over and over - to distract us from the real issues. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, disrespectful or deceitful. I am truly worried that with an aging POW with skin cancer and a newphyte (newbie) in Washington VP, we have a serious national security problem on our hands at the very helm of our command.

McCain is not fit to be Commander in Chief. No matter how much he wants to for his ego's satisfaction. Obama has others' interests in mind and his goal is to help people out, not to promote himself ad naseum -- after DECADES of political service -- to the American people.

Cindy McCain comes from a mafia family; they support McCain's bid for the Government roles he's played, and his campaign to win the WHite House.

Don't vote for this man McCain, or for his party. They need to stop insulting everyone's intelligence and offer up some truly honest, respectable and intelligent candidates. Not VPs under ethics investigations, not sufficiently vetted by the media.... and phony religious hypocrisy posing as "caring" and "loving thy neighbor" when all they do is look for opportunities to deride, denigrate and detract from their truly talented, intelligent opponents: Obaka-Biden.

It is beyond sad that the campaign has to tutor their vice presidential candidate. Obviously,

if that is the case she is not qualified to be president.

What is even sadder is that the Republicans are making her out to be some prima donna that

I agree children have no place in the discussion but the candidate does. How in the world

Boy, it certainly makes me feel warm and cozy to know that Bush's foreign policy team is coaching this nonsensical VP person. And then she'll cry and her mother will put her arms around her and everyone will get up and cheer, with tears in their eyes, of course, for the wonderful family and its wonderful family values.

I didn't hate John McCain before, but I do now. He completely insulted the intelligence of women in this country with this pick for VP. The condescension and lack of regard for women is palpable--and this woman is helping him do it. What's even worse is that he obviously thinks he is a superman and will survive his term in office, even with all his injuries and skin cancer because how could a reasonable, intelligent person who constantly professes his love of country put this woman in the position of becoming president? Wow! I LOVE American politics!! Although I'm Canadian, I have always had great interest in following your federal elections and of course, as sh*t trickles downward, us Canadians occasionally feel the affects thereof!

As an outsider looking in, perhaps I could share some of my thoughts on the candidates...

When I first heard about Obama several months ago, I thought "who the hell is he"? I kept wondering when the media was going to fill me in on that and when he was associated with an obviously racist/biased close friend/member of the clergy, I was truly amazed that he could possibly beat HRC for the Dem's ticket. Obama is definately the media's "Darling" and can do little wrong. It also appears that many African American people jumped on Obama's bandwagon long before they knew much about him, which leads me to believe that maybe they are more concerned about making history (and who can blame them) than making a thoughtful choice. As for Biden - intelligent choice for the ticket, although an Obama/HRC ticket would have seemed a sure winner.

I have a great deal of respect for McCain's service to his country and I believe he is sincere in his desire and ability to admirably serve his country as President. I think in many ways he has proven that through past actions. However, McCain needs to throw the cue cards and teleprompter away and just be himself more often. As for his VP pick...I thought, "who the hell is she"? I think he blew it in that regard, by choosing someone relatively obscure, obviously pandering for the female and/or HRC dissenters and, given his age and prior health issues, not the wisest choice....duck, duck, duck....goosed!

Anyway, what an incredible race it will be and I will be watching 'till the bitter end because from where I sit, I don't know who I would vote for if given the chance. We are all lucky that we can express our views - it's what makes our Countries so awesome. I hope it all works out and the best "man" wins!

As for Palin's daughter....please....give these people a break! As any parent will tell you, no matter what your morals are, no matter what you teach your children, they eventually make their own decisions which may not always be the right decisions and that shouldn't necessarily reflect negatively on those around them. Let's not pretend that this girl is the first teenage mother we've ever seen and moreso, let's not pretend that the rest of us haven't made our own mistakes. Clean up your own backyard before you point fingers at someone else.

By the way, if you're having trouble falling asleep between now and October 14, don't bother with your sleeping pills...you can just tune into our very own Canadian federal election coverage....ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

That's the spirit!! If this approach can be used at this level, it should also be applied in the workforce and unemployment might not be so high. Many of us apply for work and find we fall a little short of the qualifications, in matters that we know we could pick up on the job with a little coaching, and are turned down. This is a great precedence for employers.

One complaint has been that Obama is short on experience - problem solved!! He can be tutored too!

This woman who McCain selected as his running mate is, in other words, painfully lacking in her knowledge on every subject and is in dire need of tutoring. Whats even more non sensical is that people are actually willing to cast their cherished and hard fought for vote on someone who is so unlearned for the 2nd highest position in this country if not the world. This is insulting to every man, woman and child in this country. And to think, she is just a heart beat away from being president.

Who in their right mind sees nothing wrong with this ? Because if you are one of those that feel this is perfectly alright, you need your head examined. I have never heard of such a thing in my life, especially for someone seeking the votes of the public to become the VICE PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES..

I have lived and worked in Alaska for over the last 30 years. I've worked in private business running a company with net assests of over $20 million and recently worked for the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, the arm of the state that oversees oil and gas development, for 8 years. Those who have commented on Governor Palin's lack of knowledge on almost every front and need of tutoring are absolutely correct. However I disagree with the term tutoting. She needs remedial education. She is not an expert on energy issues as the Republican party has stated. When she was running for governor and without a doubt after she was elected she needed an embarrasing amount of tutoring. She parrots what her cabinet tell her and has few if any developed positions of her own. She is absolutely not remotely qualified for VP and in my opinion not even for governor. For all of you conservatives do you know that she proposed and the legislature passed a $1,200 hand out to every citizen of the state that comes from a new oil tax passed by the legislature and signed into law by Palin. Conservative, I don't think so. Opportunist, absolutely. Ethical, no way, just ask Walt Monegan.

As for the tax on oil. Why not let the people in Alaska share the wealth from oil when it is a $106 per barrel, rather than let the oil folks get that cash. But we already know which side you are on on that issue.

With regards to her experience issue. The republicans are now saying Palin has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined. If we apply the same standard of executive experience to McCain we see that Palin tops him as well. So it is safe to say that using their own definition of what qualifies as executive experience, she is more qualified than all three put together. She is moe qualified than McCain. So maybe the republicans should run her for president instead?

But let's keep a few things in mind, she left the town of Wasilla in debt to the tune of 23 million dollars. It had a balanced budget before that. Republican credential #1

She cut 20% of the budget from a program giving housing assistance to unwed teen mothers. Republican credential #2

She ran for governor promising to build the famous bridge to nowhere. When that project was cancelled by cogress she kept the money for it. Republican credential #3

She tried to fire he Wasilla librarian because she refused to pull books that Palin found personally unfit. Republican credental $4

She fired 6 people from the city government for not diaplaying proper loyalty to her. Republican credential #5

She replaced experienced city workers with her inexperienced friends. Republican credential #6

She changed tax rules that favored big business and increased the burden on the citizens. Republican credential #7

So she is a republican to the core. No doubt about that.

I served in the armed forces and went to the war in middle east, my husband retired and my son is currently serving and was deploye to the middle east for one year to serve this "country". My father and my brother both served. My father served in the Vietnam war. Now does this make me qualified for president, vice president, secretary of state or chief of staff please let me know. Is "Judgment" a factor one should consider when deciding on our next president. Can we review John McCain's judgment for a minute. He is willing to take a chance with this "country": he chose someone to be our next VP a heartbeat away(literally) from the presidency that needs to be tutored on foreign policies that said on tape she does not know the duties of a VP, that on her first speech lied about her record of supporting "the bridge to nowhere", who is a maverick/reformer when she believes in the same things she rid the" corrupt bastards" in alaska for; she herself was a member of the AIP(alaska independence party) oh by the way there is a video circulating on the internet showing her video speech March 2008 at the AIP 2008 convention, she too like Obama has a radical preacher that has video tapes indicating his opinions of this great american "country", his cronies as we speak or deleting every internet site that contains any incriminating information on our next VP but they are a day to late because the computer savy folks have managed to move all of this to their own personal websites. Just on judgment alone our GOP candidate is Frightening. The most frighten thing here is I believe he will become our next President because this election has become divided along many ways, there is a culture divide: conservative vs liberals; religious divide: pro life vs pro choice; racial divide: racist vs non racist; gender divide: men vs women; class divide: middle class vs upper class; Mind you know one at this point is interested in the issues. There are folks in this "country" that can sleep more peaceful knowing that they may have a white female as VP that needs tutoring on foreign policies when we have a war in IRAQ , AFGHANISTAN AND RUSSIA than to vote for a black man who may not have the "experience" but have managed to make sound decisions and have made quite an impression on millions of Americans in this "country" and other countries. I bet you now the world such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, Israel, Pakistan are taking a front row seat on this election. I bet you at this point they are hoping McCain win this election. I will be praying everyday for the next 4 years if he does make it that my child survive his impulsive /erratic decisions and GOD forbid if anyone piss him off what decisions he make. Then again since he has a maverick for his VP if her track record is true which I have no reason to believe it is but can only hope then she will clean house in Washington the same way she cleaned house in Alaska and get rid of her Republicans first since that what she reportedly done in Alaska. But, based on her phone interview she gave in Alaska she will definitely be looking out for her "country" Alaska and instead of them receiving more earmarks "pork money" than any of the other 49 states by a mere 100 million dollars she will make sure they get even more. But from what I am hearing from the media none of this information is of any significance because if Palin manage to WOW you with her acceptance speech tomorrow she and McCain will have in the bag. I a democrat can live with either of the candidates as president. So in advance I will congratulate both of the mavericks on a job well done.

Dear Just.....truth. Every political candidate gets tutored, but I believe the Democrats have a big head start is all saying the same thing on a daily basis. But consider this, Obama wants to leave Iraq soon and move troops to the Afgan war (You remember that was Clinton's war). What is the difference?

My suggestion would be to send in 100 Preditors and Global Hawks and cut the border into Pakistan off this winter (or ever). In Iraq, they now control 11 or the 18 provinces. Our presence will start to decline soon.

We agree that the political race this year is based too much on racial and gender issues. I just fear the return of what happened in the 70's and 80's. It was tough being qualified for a job but not getting hired because I was not female or a minority.

The Truth is----- T. Boone Pickens is right. We control our destiny and we must work to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. Wind power, solar power and tthis country will be economically sound and strong again. Both candidates are hearing that message and adding his words in their campaigns. All we, as citizens, have to do is decide if we want the House, the Senate and the Executive to all be the same party or not.

I do not think we could afford to let one party control all three, especially with the leadership (or lack thereof) in the House and Senate!

Yes, all of the candidates have very little experience being the executive of the most powerful nation on the planet. But folks like you and I decide which guy is best. The biggest complaint from the Dems has been that McCain went along with Bush 90% of the time. What they failed to mention is that their candidate only went along with the president about 60% of the time. Of course, they did not mention that their candidate was out campaigning for the last two years and voted with the president on only six of the ten important votes he was there to make!

Dear Wildlifeusa. Abortion should not be a political topic, or should not be on a the Federal level. The Supreme court ruled that long ago, and will not decide to try to reverse that decision. At least not while Roberts is Chief Justice. The subject will not be heard.

Abortion is an emotional issue, and the arguments about it are moot. It will not come up. If it did we would go back to "back room abortions" like it was before R vs.W. The Supreme Court is not likely to throw the country into chaos about something that is a personal choice issue.

Paraguay. A third world country in South America. They speak Portugese. Bush can hardly speak English. So what's the point?

A degree in Journalism from 1987. A stint as councilperson and mayor. Oh yes...she definately needs to be tutored! And a degree in law and politcial science would help too! She is NOT QUALIFIED to run this country should anything happen to McCain. So what she has kids and one special needs. How does that qualify her to discuss foreign policy with every country on the map.

Can she even hold a conversation with Condoleeza Rice about ANYTHING!? Hillary has a daughter too...and Chelsea isn't pregnant. If Ms. Goody-two-shoes can't manage her own household, how the heck can she manage the white house. Her supporters can sugar-coat her LACK OF EXPERIENCE if they want...she remains and will always be UNQUALIFIED to be VP of the country. McCain pulled a sneak trick that insults the intelligence of women....his strategy is tremendously thoughtless. He should have picked Condoleeza Rice. She has the experience, prowess, intellect, education and she speaks the language of governance and the public respects her. I'd love to see ads against Obama not having "enough experience" now.

Nothing inspires confidence like having the Bush team tutoring someone in foreign policy, considering how well he's done with that over the years. Good Lord! I wouldn't trust the Bush team to tutor a kid in middle school history, let alone influence a potential Vice President.

And for someone who's made his opponents lack of experience the major selling point of his campaign, McCain picked someone who needs "tutoring"? Perhaps if he had met her more than once before nominating her for the second highest position of power in the world, this little tutoring session wouldn't be necessary.

I kind of feel badly for Palin, she's getting hammered by all this, when it's really John McCain's judgement and decision making process that should be questioned.

Let's be very clear about this. NO GOVERNOR has foreign policy experience. IT IS NOT PART OF THEIR JOB AS GOVERNOR. This includes BILL CLINTON, JIMMY CARTER, RONALD REAGAN, G.W. Bush, and all the others. Either they have the vision and conviction and competence to be a world leader or they don't But they don;t bring previous experience in with them. However, they do bring executive experience. They do make hard decisions on a daily basis. A decision for a governor is not the same as a vote for a senator. Senators can vote or not vote on issues, they can offer their vote on an issue in exchange for other political favors from their peers. its all politics. No one lives or dies based on a senators vote on some bill. You can't trace some soldier's sacrifice specifically down to a particular senator's vote on a war issue for example. So there is no responsibility associated with that action. But Governors make decisions daily that affect the lives of their constituency immediately.

Military command brings the same type of executive experience. When you are responsible for the lives of the soldiers you command, and have to decide to send them into harm's way, that is a lot different than voting for a new pork filled bill that benefits the major donors in your state.Tell me one decision Obama has made that had a direct and immediate impact on the lives or the safety of anyone. Remember, I said a decision, not a vote. If you are the decision maker that means you alone are responsible for the consequences of the decision. Governors must do this every day...

Palin is caring for her down syndorme child and simultaneously has one of the highest approval ratings of any Governor in U.S. History. Surely one or her advisors from the Podunk Alaska city council can take a leave of absence from the seal hunt to come coach her on foreign policy. Is there not a single Podunk PTA member that could come and help write her speeches?

To Those That Crticize Those That Criticize Palin's current family dilemmas:

Perhaps people would not call for Obama or Hillary to be "stay at home" parents. In fact, they probably wouldn't. Point is, people that advertise themselves such as Palin does, those who trumpet their Morality, put themselves on a Family Pedestal, and generally preach as if they are on a tier above all others run into problems. They end up opening themselves up to MUCH more criticism when the lives they lead do not match up with what they are preaching so heavily to others. Do I think it's a big deal that Palin's daughter is pregnant? Nope. Do I think it's a big deal that she's pregnant and her mother who is running for Vice President with a heavy Morality platform says the only way to combat teen pregnancy is abstinence? Yep. An inability to apply your philosophy effectively to your own family says alot to me. Add that to the problems with the State Trooper, earmarked funds, etc., and the actions don't match with the words. A big deal, when your main attribute is supposed to be values.

Why can't a person have views that differ from yours without being labeled as some sort of "Preacher"? She is not putting herself on a pedestal either. She is just answering the call to service. She demonstrates her personal convictions for all to see. It is not a "platform" it is her life and it is her family! She really did face the nightmare of being told she had a down's syndrome child and lovingly gave birth to that child anyway. She really did have a teenage daughter that made a mistake that contradicted some of the values she instilled in her. ALL teenage kids make mistakes that contradict the values we instill in them. It is part of growing up. So this means she is an ineffective leader? No. You can debate the effectiveness of Abstinence policy. That is fair. but you can't say she isn't effective at her job because her kid made an immature mistake. How would you like it if your boss passed you over for a promotion at work because your kid tried pot once? Would that be fair? The irony of her situation doesn't escape me, but I just don't see how this means she is not an effective governmental leader.

As far as abstinence is concerned, it is medically impossible to get pregnant or contract an STD if you don't have sex. So the policy does make sense, and many kids do respond to it.. However it won't reach every kid. But that does not mean that the proposed alternative is a perfect plan either. It is much farther from it then the abstinence policy is. so you are in a glass house on that one.

Just because the daugher missed school and her whereabouts was "unknown" during Sarah Palin's "delivery" doesn't mean it is the daughter's baby as the rumor goes, BUT it is not a responsible action to have children after 15 years since you're last one without a chance of Down's Syndrome, but maybe they don't believe in protection either!

It's untrue that Palin has no foreign policy experience, anyway. In fact, she appears to have seriously flirted with the idea of trying to turn Alaska into a foreign country. How many vice presidential candidates can put that on their resumes?

And I won't be buried under their damn flag."

The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. could learn from this man.

Share Vogler's sentiment? You can purchase a "Joe was right!" T-shirt on the AIP's website for $25. The AIP's website also provides helpful links to other secessionist groups, including the Southern Independence Party of Tennessee (which boasts of going after "these Politically Correct Liberal Communist[s]"), Ulster nationalists and Chechen separatists.

The McCain campaign denies that Palin ever joined the AIP. But while it is in dispute whether she attended its 1994 convention, she did visit the 2000 one and addressed AIP conventions in 2006 and 2008. Her husband, Todd, was a registered AIP member from 1995 to 2002, and the AIP leadership certainly considers her one of their own.

Video footage shows AIP Vice Chairman Dexter Clark describing Palin at the 2007 North American Secessionist Convention as an "AIP member before she got the job as a mayor of a small town -- that was a nonpartisan job. But you get along to go along. She eventually joined the Republican Party, where she had all kinds of problems with their ethics, and well, I won't go into that." (No need to. The Alaska Legislature's ethics investigators are on the case.) Apparently with Palin in mind, Clark then went on to urge AIP members to "infiltrate" the major parties.

So what does Palin currently think of the AIP? Hard to know -- she's been keeping mum -- but this year she told AIP members: "I'm delighted to welcome you to the 2008 Alaska Independence Party Convention. ... Keep up the good work!"

Does it make you uneasy to have a possible secessionist sympathizer aiming for the White House? Do you worry that Palin shares AIP founder Vogler's burning "hatred for the American government"?

Relax! If so, it will enable her, as vice president, to more effectively bond with foreign leaders she'll meet, many of whom also nurture a hatred for the American government. In diplomatic demarches, finding common ground is always helpful.

McCain has always promised that his ticket would show "independence." We just didn't realize it was going to be this kind.

What a collection of hypocrites. "Change, change, change" was McCain's mantra. I'm different from George Bush, the current President, he wants you to believe. Why aren't more people appalled by this? It's up to the media not to repeat the failures of the past when they let the bush/cheney band of thieves and liars get away with so much. I knew who she was before she was introduced by McCain. If you follow enviornmental issues, her name comes up often and not for good reasons. She "backdoors" issues to get her way. at this time the Alaskan wolf population is being decimated by aerial hunting. No other state in the union allows hunting from airplanes...only Alaska...thanks to Gov. Palin. She also requested that POLAR BEARS be removed from the endangered species act. Pres. Bush refused...so now she has sued the Federal Govt. to have the POLAR BEARS removed from the endangered list...So that they can meet the same fate as the wolves. An important presidential election record will be broken this year, it is not the first time a woman or Black person will be elected to the Executive office. We will be seeing the greatest American tragedy ufolding right before our eyes. It is one of the rare occasions when a native son will not be elected by his own state. To make it worse, such native son is the greatest hero in an area which has always been the pride and joy of that state. Correct me if I am wrong. I have hardly heard any one at the Repulican Convention or during their campaign mentioned the Annapolis Naval Academy, not even McCain himself. Being born in Panama to a naval family and travel all over this country and the world, McCain really does not have a true home. Arizona is a state he used for election to Congress which he has not visited frequently. The Navy Academy is the only place McCain can really call his home in which he had spent the happiest time of his college life with his navy friends. Maryland should welcome her naval son with open arms and elect him as president.

But, no! Maryland have 1.6 million Black or approximately 30 % of the state's population making it the "Black Capital" near of the real Capital of the nation. It was 36 % to 61% (almost double) in favor of Obama over Hillary during the primary here. All media and people in Maryland have expressed the sad fact that little or no Marylanders will vote for McCain. I personally don't like McCain very much but my conscience forced me to campaign for him. This episode is not only the greatest disgrace of all Americans but also of that of the human race. It is an unforgivable sin committed by all Marylanders especially its Black racists. I am making suggestion to our Government to relocate its Naval Academy out of Maryland. The true and only battle ground states, for this election, are not Ohio, Florida or Michigan but Maryland. The decision is not who is going to become president? But whether God had made a mistake in creating man?

With this letter I have ended this election right here and now! All of you should know that it will be impossible for Obama to win without Maryland.

So where else but the Great Lake and Illinois. McCain can also suggest other Great Lake states such as Ohio, Michigan, New York, Wisconsin, or Minnesota depending on who are going to elect him. So people in Illinois will vote for McCain and Maryland will have no choice but also vote vote for McCain. Since Maryland is the Black Capital near the nation's Capital and Illinois is a Black State, if Obama loses there, then their is no way he can win this election. The main issue and prize for this election is nothing else but the Naval Academy in Maryland.

There simply can be no doubt that the Republicans are blatantly and self-servingly boldly dishonest, simply put, just full of the BS. They are not the party they were sixteen and more years ago when they sincerely advocated small government, financial responsibility, to only do for the people what they couldn’t do for themselves and striving to be honest (the conservative values). They still use the word ‘conservative’ today but it is just a word they use for emotional attachment and to hide behind, they only give lip service to the values it represents. The last eight years fully substantiates all of that as it is evident that they simply pursue their private agenda and continually lie without any hesitation to misrepresent, manipulate, camouflage, rationalize and excuse their actions. And now, they offer us a 72 year old candidate who is deteriorating and who out of desperation and irresponsibility chose a running mate who is aggressively bazaar, who is extreme in everything, who lies repeatedly without conscience, whose touch with reality is questionable and who is inexperienced in diplomacy, foreign policy, national interests and more; simply a person who is only an attack dog, as she herself says, ‘a pit bull with lipstick’. Can you imagine Sarah Palin as president? Even as Vice President she would be a total embarrassment. It is very important that we really recognize their consistent dishonesty and their arrogant efforts to use deception to manipulate public opinion, because behind all of the lies, all they offer is more of the same Bush-Cheney placating of Special Interests. The only real change they will provide is downright scary!

One more point. There are several people who make comments here, who can easily be identified by their persistence, their dishonesty, their strong bias and their extreme statements, who simply have connection, being volunteer/staff, with the Republicans and are assigned to do what they are doing. It is consistent with everything else the Republicans are doing to deceive the public. The garbage they persistently put out and refer people to should further identify them and should be understood as attempts to mislead and manipulate. It is simply as with everything else, they do it with boldness and without any conscience. Just because things are offered on the internet doesn’t make them true; we need to be careful what and who we trust and to be logical, even cynical and rational and objective ourselves. It is important to get it right this time!

If she needs schooling from the good old boys and old guard Where's the change? Furthermore, if she is ignorant of National Security and foriegn affairs, in order to even debate Joe Biden, what do you think she will be like as part of the leadership of the free world? Will the McCain camp stoop to anything to win this election, even if it is seemingly opposed to what they initially fed to us at their convention.

I watched the Sunday news show and noted the general disdain by the ABC Roundtable regarding John McCain statements regarding Governor Sarah Palin foreign policy credentials as a Governor of Alaska. Everyone thought that comment was funny and there was no basis to support it. How does ABC news reconcile that position with Governor Rick Perry of Texas standing up to President George Bush and World Court opposition to the execution of Mexican nationals who did not have an opportunity to see their Mexican consul. Governor Rick Perry and the State of Texas ignored Bush and the World Court and went ahead and executed the Mexican national convicted of capital murder. In so doing the Governor of Texas conducted an amazing foreign policy that contradicted the official foreign policy of the United States. State criminal law statutes trump federal law and international law. States along the Mexican border such as Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California have had to deal with economic and immigration issues and relations with Mexico on a day to day basis. Those Southern governors do have foreign policy experience. ABC news reporters display their ignorance when they do not recognize the intimacy that exists between states and countries on their border such as Mexico and Russia. On issues ranging from the war on drugs, border security, to immigration, to extradition of fugitives from foreign countries, states are involved in relations with foreign countries. While Washington pontificates and studies issues for decades, states are forced to come up with their own solutions in relations with neighboring countries.

Looks like the only qualification Sarah has to be vice president is her lack of having had an abortion. I think folks should forget this however and concentrate on the memory problems of John mcCain. The man is displaying the early signs of Alzheimer's disease.

"Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will meet next week with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in New York, on the sidelines of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly, according to Afghan officials in Washington."--Washington Post

TRANSCRIPT:

Palin: Oh, Mr. President, it is such a pleasure to meet you, you're the first head of state that I have had the opportunity to meet--which is more than many Vice Presidents--and I'm so glad that my first one is an Afghani.

You know, in Trig's class there was a little Afghani? He was the child of one of the oil executives, and he was so cute, with his little turban runnin' around, everyone just loved him, and felt for him...

Karzai: Yes.

Palin: And everyone knew that we just had to defend him and keep him free and that's why I think that with a Palin/McCain...

Palin Aide: (looking up from clipboard) McCain/Palin.

Palin: ...McCain/Palin ticket, we can make sure of that, if we have to attack Russia, even, I mean, to keep people free at home, just like we want to keep our people free. We have so much in common! I know you have the problem with the poppies, and I understand because we have the same problem with the crystal meth in Wasilla? And I said "Look, we've got to shake this up!" and then that's exactly what I said: 'Look, let's just see what we have in common with these guys!" And that's just what you could do with the Taliban, Mr. Karzai. They've already so moral, and they want people to live by the straight and narrow, and they've got the newspapers sayin' and the schools doin' lots of the right things. They just need to get some of the right ideas, and pray to the right Lord. And, if they don't understand, we still have the weapons left over from Iraq, and then we can't blink, we can't blink, can we, Mr. Karzai?

Karzai: (Looks at Palin silently without moving his head. Pauses.). Blink?

Palin: Right. The thing is, we just have to hit the ground runnin', Mr. Karzai. That's what I do. A few weeks ago I didn't even know what a Vice President does! That's why I put a clock on my wall--do you have the same clocks as we do in Afghanistan? With the twelve numbers? (points in air to numbers on air clock)--Anyway, I said "I'm gonna measure just how much time I have left here" and that's what you could do, I think, with the war, Mr. Karzai, is to put up a clock so you know just how much time you have left until you finish it. I tell you, Mr. Karzai, it's such a motivating influence on my staff, the good ones, anyway, they know what they're supposed to finish and when, they hear me sayin' "Look at the clock, people, look at the clock, and know what you have left to finish..."

Karzai: Yes.

Palin: And so I said to my husband, Todd--I call him the "First Dude"--Do you have that word 'Dude' there in Afghanistan?--maybe it's like "Khan" or "Emir" or somethin'?--I said to him, 'Todd, we have to take a look at what's happenin' in Afghanistan--before McCain called or any other thing happened--' cause I saw that Russia was right across from us and then right next to that you have all the Stans (counts cross fingers) Kyrgyzstan, oh, what's the others?--well, you are aware of them, of course, Mr. Karzai (laughs)...

Karzai: (Nods)

Palin: And if we don't let other people know of what I'm aware of, then the world won't change, Mr. Karzai. I know we have the same goals even if we don't have the same God yet...(aide touches Palin on shoulder, whispers). 'Even', not 'yet', I meant 'same God even', Mr. Karzai. And my point is, we can't let others stop our choice, which is freedom for those who deserve it, and that's why I know a Palin/McCain...

Palin Aide: (reaching over to touch shoulder)

Palin: Stop! (brushing aide's hand off)...McCain/Palin ticket will do just what you want, Mr. Karzai...

Second Palin Aide Approaches: It's time for your next appointment, Gov. Palin.

Palin: It was so good meeting you, President Karzai, and all of your other people, it was so good meeting you too! Shalom! (waves, exits)

Karzai: (to his aide, in Pashto): She makes the last one look like the Grand Mufti.

McCain and Bush's Kabuki Theatre: McCain Contacts Bush To Set Up Meeting To Prop Up His "Suspension"

Now we know why McCain hired the Bush contingent.

It emerged in the White House briefing today that McCain called Bush and asked him to initiate a meeting today at 4 pm at the White House, putatively for him to "deal with" the crisis.

That is, McCain asked Bush to help him create an avoidant trifecta: To try ti\o lend some credence to McCain's desperate assertion that a suspension of his campaign is necessary, in effect avoiding a debate in which he would face critical questions about his stance on the economy; attempting to co opt the financial crisis thereby trying to put an end to his plummeting in the polls created by his flailing positions on the economy--perhaps best reflected by his statement days ago that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong"; and, while avoiding his own debate, also buying more time for Sarah Palin after her embarrassing photo op at the UN yesterday, by moving her debate forward as well.

Here's how it happened, according to Q and A at the WHB:

McCain emailed Bush asking for the 4 P.M. meeting. Now, one reasonably might ask, why is today at 4 p.m. such a necessity for McCain, if his interest is solely the national good?

Because it is before the debate. McCain hopes to stage a meeting at the White House, thereby, with Bush's cooperation, lending plausibility to his claim to need to suspend his campaign. Then, if Republicans, in their own electoral interest, can be persuaded to come to agreement after the meeting, and before the debate, he would claim--in an act of utter stage management--to have "resolved" the crisis. Thereby hoping to take the heat off on his past careening stances and sliding polls and staunch the bleeding on the polls--before the debate.

This is Kabuki Theatre masquerading as substance--no different than what we saw at the U.N. yesterday.

It is utterly stage managed, utterly cynical, and utterly unrelated to the substantive deliberation necessary to actually resolve these matters on the merits and for our nation's future, rather than for short-term and desperate political advantage.

These occurrences are equally important for what they indicate about McCain's governing style as they are for their impact upon democratic process: impulsive acts that rely on drama and theatrical posture rather than substantive reasoning and long-term deliberation; a strong willingness to sacrifice substantive reasoning, deliberative process, and even prior structures and agreements to immediate political need; an attempt to reach outcomes through last minute stage management rather than substantive argument.

These should create deep concern for anyone who wishes for a change in governmental process from the past eight years.

We have an economy, rather than a campaign, to rescue. Putting nation before politics means putting all attempts to resolve it before political attempts to co opt it--and to move towards one's commitments, rather than towards a more immediate and short-term salvation.
