It seems so far fetched that BO would be classed as an Irishman!~! And the statement if a person has 5% irish in them (Heinz 57% Variety) that he would be classed as an Irishman? !~! Give this Irishlady a break, PULEEZ! I can honestly claim being a true second generation Irishman. I am Proud of my True heritage, being an O'Rorke! And YES....I did go to St. Mary's in Canada and NO, not all Irishmen like to drink and wobble on their barstools. I personally do not see any "Irish Eyes Smiling" in Barack Obama!

It's interesting that people here would be somehow offended by sharing some heritage with Obama. Yes, it's silly that the man quoted equated 5% to being fully Irish (whatever that really means, anyway) but he was probably just waxing sentimental about his own love for his Irish background.

And it's quite obnoxious to refer to someone as a "Heinz 57" because they don't share your level oh-so-pure blood.

I find the idea of a nation (or continent) full of Heinz 57s quite tasty, actually.

Being an amateur genealogist I am always interested in the genealogies of the candidates. I also find it interesting that in this day and age people still need to claim a "pedigree" of worthiness. So sad. I think it is kinda cool that all four candidates have Irish heritage. Shows there's a lot of good in those green genes!

If anyone cannot fathom Barak Obama being Irish then they need to learn a lot more about him - as well as the other candidates. If my grade school Social Studies is remembered correctly, back in US history if someone had ONE drop of African blood then they were considered to be a negro. So if someone has a drop of Irish, German, Thai, Chinese, Martian, etc. blood, that's ok with me.

Isn't it grand we live in a free country?

I often heard my mother use the expression, "More Irish than the Irish," at moments like these. As relations in Ireland if they would consider you to be Irish or a Yank with an Irish name, the answer is somewhat surprising. The face of Ireland is itself changing - Asians, Africans and Eastern Europeans are assimilating in large numbers. In a generation or two this effect will be even more profound. It's time to close the Lace Curtains. We may be Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, Kenyan-Americans - you name it. On Election Day we are all Americans - and that's what it means to be an American. Ethnicity is a splendid interest to indulge in but just as gender, profession, race, creed - a whole host of factors, are just one factor of our identities, so too ethnicity.

One only need look at the a few of notable African American athletes with traditionally Irish last names to understand the Irish-African-American melting pot.

Karl Malone. Moses Malone. Shaquille O'Neal. (I would include Donovan McNab, but McNab, like MacLean, are Scottish in origin, not Irish).

I don't find it strange at all that Obama has an Irish-American ancestor, any more than I find it strange that McCain, Biden or Palin have Irish-American ancestors.

The Irish in American have a long history of being active in politics - kissing the blarney stone and kissing babies are time honored traditions.

As an American of Irish descent and a distant relative of Sen. Obama, I've got to say this is the most irrelevant of all the discussions in the presidential race. Don’t allow race, be it Celtic or African or a combination of the two, be the red herring here. Really, people, grow up. We need to be considering what each candidate will do for our country or, worse, do to our country. The scary thing is about Sen. Obama is not his heritage; it’s the fact that he is the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate and a socialist. Look honestly at his record. If you want to take our once proud nation in that direction, so be it. But cast your vote for that reason, knowing the impact of your actions, not for (or against) his race. That’s the mentality that set O.J. Simpson free .

OK, so my maiden name was Sullivan and my mother's maiden name was Sullivan. I've always considered myself 100% Irish - I am glad to see all the Irish candidates. I am proud to be Irish-American and am heavily into genetic genealogy and work for a DNA-enabled social networking site. I am very familiar with Megan Smolenyak's work and am glad to see her work mentioned here!

Oh, by the way - it is said that God invented beer so the Irish wouldn't take over the world...

Obama is as Black as White.

I am glad that the topic of Ireland Genealogies has been brought up, because I have always felt a lot of sympathy with Irish People and Things. Perhaps Catholicism has being a common bond with Hispanics and Italians and you feel that thing of the heart everywhere. My Irish teachers were very good and friendly to me.

I like Irish Movies, History, Folklore and so on.

Irish movies are very dramatic and intense. They are very human.

I am glad that Obama is Irish too. That man is very Professorial, Lawyer like, a Great Intellectual and Orator.

Obama is a Great Intelligence, his speeches are a pleasure for those that love oratory, poetry or literature.

I hope that Catholics, Irish, Italians, Hispanics, Polish, etc .... will vote for Obama on November 4.

Irish Work Ethic

It is simple for me... My vote will be based on what frame of reference, work ethic, and proof of good and common sense each of the candidates and thier running mates possess. These all being qualities that most Irish have and understand, I will be going with the McCain Palin ticket. As for the other candidate and his running mate, I am not impressed that they may institute a Green Turban Day. Furthurmore, take a 100 year snapshot to look at what the Irish in this country have shown they can accomplish, build, OVERCOME when down. Take the same snapshot of the other guys. I've had enough of dumbing down America and touchy-feely don't hurt anybody's feelings. We need to vote in someone with IRISH potatoes, not someone looking to give away the house to people that wait for their check to show up every month. Sorry if I got a little off topic- must be the IRISH blood!

I can see that Obama's message is still not being heard. He has campaigned on a theme os change, and Americanism (all of us)! Most Whites cannot and are not comfortable unless they can put you into an ethnic box! That way they know how they are suppose to think about you, and treat you. This also is a handy shortcut to knowing other people. They'll know what you are like without going through any effort. In order to really know someone would mean to ristk. Risk already set ideas as to who and what you are. Risk being vulnerable enough to let someone know them. Risk finding out that they could be wrong. It's easier to just use the shortcut of knowing what box to put you in and that's it. Obama has been trying to break that pattern. See me as a man trying to use my talents and gifts for the betterment of all people! Obama is not calling for change in political policy only. He's asking us to do the work to change our attitudes, expectations, relationships with each other and the "business as usual" way we go about being in this country. He's asking us to work as hard as he will to bring about this change.

What we really need to be concerned about, my fellow Americans, is how this magazine and others, as well as all mass media is attempting to control this election and bring about the victory of Barack Obama. This election, and more specifically the reporting of any activities of the candidates, has been completely unfair and one-sided. A negative spin is put on anything relating to John McCain or Sarah Palin. Regardless of one's personal election choice, we should all be angered by the misinformation and outright lies spoken and printed by the press. They have become nothing more than the National Enquirer. We should be demanding truth and integrity in reporting. Why is the mass media attempting to control this election? Why do they purport to know what the American people really want or need? We need to demand accountability from the mass media.

As far as Irish heritage there are many of us in the United States whom have a tie to the one part of the British Isles especially Ireland or Erie. I have been involved in my family research for some time now and my Morgan ancestors were of Welsh Ancestory, but once landed in the Colonies now the United States my early family members inter-married into the Neill family of Colonial Virginia and recently we discovered that the Neill family were direct decendants of the O'Neill clan of County Down Ireland the very same O'Neill's whom were a number of the original noble families of Ireland whom fled Northern Ireland during the time of the flight of the Wild Geese from Elizabeth I re-settlement policy of the Scottish to Northern Ireland.

Since as of date in certain area's of the United States race has become an issue, and now that Mc Cain has indicated he is of Scotch Irish heritage and a part of me of the original O'Neill of County Down, Ulster, Ireland and loyal to the Kings of Dublin Castle and defenders of the Harp and Shamrock, I am utterly de-void of the very idea of ever voting for John Mc Cain since it was heritage that not only drove my O'Neill ancestors from Ireland but tried to undermine the very institutions of the Catholic Faith in Ireland. I would not be surprised if John Mc Cain had family members whom were still left in Northern Ireland whom were either involved or direct members of the Black and Tan Regiments whom terrorised many a village or city in the newly found Irish Republic during the 1920's.

I am now fortified in another reason why I cannot vote for John Mc Cain since it was his ancestors whom were part of the reasons and partially the architects of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I did say the main part of my family were Welsh, but a great many of my family in Wales supported the Catholic King of England and many fled Wales because many of my ancestors were of the Catholic faith and fled to France and the colonies in America to escape protestant purges in England and Wales in the 1500's and 1600's.

A vote for John Mc Cain is basically a vote for the Loyal Order of Orangemen a Brithish Loyalist order with branches and lodges still in Canada. I now put my full support for Barack Obama since he as well comes from a heritage whom has and currently still is being oppressed in certain arenas and sectors of our society. I will never vote for an Orangeman he might even erode the United States further in order to bring about re-unification with the British Crown.

Now my question to my Irish sisters and brothers whom reside in Scranton, PA and other area's of the United States whose ancestors came to America to escape to a better life. How many of your ancestors were oppressed or executed by the English supported Orange order? How many of your ancestors fled to America due to the famine? How many of you today still practice the Catholic Faith? And yet your willing to utterly destroy the very memory of your ancestors to vote for the decendant of those whom defeated our noble ancestors at the Battle of the Boyne, whom starved , murdered and exploited and tried to destroy our Irish Ancestors? I think it's time for you naveies to wake up and stop this damned foolishness. Our irish ancestors were oppressed and called terrible stereotyped and offensive names, Mick's, Paddy's, Rag Shanties, etc. Our early Irish ancestors weren't even allowed in certain area's and were confronted in cities like Boston, New York and Philadelphia by signs in shops and busineses that read " No Dog's or Irishmen Allowed ",. Have you people forgotten the Molly Mc Guires whom fought for fairness in the Pennsylvania Coal mines and in particular Scranton. Well let me put a historical foot note to this, A vote for John Mc Cain the Scotch Irish Orangeman is basically the same as digging up those whom fought the fight for Irish involvment into American Society and equality, opening up their coffins and virtually slapping them in the face and then just tossing that poor soul back into their grave with no regard

nor respect for what they have done for the Irish Cause in America.

I know we have come a long way and are above that; but for those of you whom vote for Mc Cain because he is white and because Barack Obama is of African American. My question is have you risen above or are you still locked in a time warp? Well since you are the remember it was Scotch Irish familes such as John Mc Cain's whom oppressed and drove our familes to America not vice a versa.

I think the following would happen

Senator Obama would get the same reverence as the Pope, He would easily fill Croke Park.

Senator Biden not as well known perhaps but would certainly do well on the Irish Talk TV and Radio circuit which is far superior to the US (only NPR comes close)

Now Senator McCain whilst being a friend of Ireland in the past his current fan base in the old sod would not be large certainly Biden would blow him away.

Gov Palin, quick fuel up the airplane and send her back across the Atlantic from whence she came.

In other words Obama wins the Irish vote.

sttarshinetoo--- you have brought to light something that I have been voicing in my thoughts ,very often as I watch the campaign's operations and heard their voices. the Obama campaign has been showing the concept of a change in values and attitudes.One such example is the revelations, in a past forum, that everyone is important ;and people are begining to be hopeful and feeling affirmed as human beigns ,created equally by God. Senator Obama is a respectful person although one has to be very wise, especially in thes times! People,especially of mixed heritages who had felt excluded and side-lined; are feeling accepted to varing degrees in a positive manner!

I have not heard this matter put in the fore as you have done and it is an interesting matter point to discuss.

Given that true Irish like their local bars and restaurants, it is funny to note that Joe Biden is eating at the local cafe in his home town that closed (Katie's) closed 15 years ago.

I guess he is not truly Irish or he does not eat out when is in his home town - but most of us know within six months of our favorite restaurant going out of business. Irish know for sure! or at least those among us who like to enjoy our friends and neighbors. I guess Obama does not hang out in Joe's home town as he did not even know this fact....Irish - Not really. Carl, they seem to have roots - but don't have the Irish spirit!
