Bipartisanship and ? Maverick McCain.

Dear concerned citizens of America and Mass Media of the U.S.A.

As a concerned registered independent voter, forensic psychiatrist, disabled American I made my decision to vote for Obama-Boden ticket.

It is sad, unfortunate, and tragci that Temperamental and Angry McCain is out to play and create discard, mistrust and distress around Obama with the Vail of claim that he will bring bipartisanship in Washington DC. He is destroying him claim every by painting Obama naive. It is tragic, sad, and unfortunate that so called Maverick McCain has already generated a disdain and demeaning face off in the debates and bailout suggestion. Obama is real Presidential and he maintained a smile during the debate and while McCain had a constant grin and disdain towards Obama.

I stand by my comment from yesterday that Obama benefits from McCain's continued argument that Sarah Palin is "qualified." As long as the American public sees Obama as more qualified than Palin (which they currently do, by a long shot), McCain's argument actually benefits Obama more than Palin.

Tonight's debate is a double whammy. If Sarah Palin fails miserably (which I don't expect), Obama/Biden look like the safer choice. If Sarah Palin does spectacularly well (which I also don't expect), Obama is buoyed by "qualified" argument coming out of the McCain camp. In fact, I imagine the Obama camp would be ecstatic if Sarah Palin does well enough to take herself off the joke circuit, because it would focus the media's attention back on McCain.

McCain's best bet if for Sarah Palin to exactly meet (not miss and not exceed) current expectations. A sad prospect for Palin's future political career, to be sure, but it might be the only chance McCain has of regaining some of those dismal poll numbers.

What if Palin just sits in stunned silence for a solid thirty seconds?

I actually think McCain could still suffer significantly from the debate. It is the undecided voters who matter now and a terrible performance by Palin could lead them to swing to Obama. Granted, Palin's inadequacies are known to a degree now that we've seen her interviewed. But those sorry interviews are still anchored by a riveting convention speech. I think it's possible that Palin will fall even further from grace and lose important votes along the way.

You can see that this writers bias is towards the left.

Something I haven't seen pointed out for quite a while is that when Palin debated in Alaska she hardly had anyone watching her, and the press on hand--maybe one or two reporters--were well disposed towards her. So she's not at all used to a national and hostile audience. Moreover, Andrew Halcro is on record as pointing out that when she debated him, her answers were "political gibberish." In other words, she spouted the exact same inanities during her "good" debates as she did in her pathetic little interviews.

I think it's a right-wing fantasy that she's a better speaker/debater than she's shown to the rest of the United States. There's no reason to think that she is suddenly going to sound knowledgable and competent just because she's been cramming on subjects she has known nothing about. As her shabby education makes abundantly clear, she is not someone who learns things easily, especially things that don't interest her. Her so-called charm is worthless in the light of critical scrutiny (again, nothing she's used to), so that won't save her.

AT BEST she will not cause McCain to bleed too many more supporters.

People when you read comments on these blogs where a writer uses the term "muslim" to describe Senator Obama you are reading the ravings of a bigot and a racist. What he/she wants to say is don't vote for Obama because of his race. They want to use the "N" word but can't for fear their vile comments will collapse their posting and they want to see themselves in print spewing their racist bigotry every chance they can get.

Even acknowledging their comments is giving them what they need - attention - but enough of the

lies about his religious affiliation. Just admit your a racist and get on with your life.

There are millions of idiots who jumped on mccains ticket once he announced some idiot from alaska as his VP. the american public hasnt been exsposed to much of this idiots idiocy, expect for a few choice idiotic clips (thanks mrs. couric!) This vp debate will prove that she is not an idiot, she just doesn't know anything about domestic or foreign policy. Of course millions of idiots won't be swayed by the fact that this vp pick is, well, an idiot. But many moderate voters will be listening closely to mrs. palins comments.

I agree with you that most people vote for the top of the ticket, and therefore this debate is not going to directly decide many votes in this election. However, we now only have 34 press cycles till election day and McCain needs to make up ground. He needs those press cycles to be about homeland security, foreign affairs, drill baby drill, elitism, and Obama's riskiness. Obama, in turn, will try to force the headlines toward the economy, the economy, the economy, McCain's disposition, and the economy.

If Palin manages to get through this debate without any Couric-interview-like moments, she will fade into the background as all Vice Presidential candidates do. If, however, she raises more questions about her readiness for office, she will insert herself into the press cycle each time she trips up while on the stump (albeit as one of the minor daily stories instead of a headline).

McCain can't afford to have people paying attention to Palin while he tries to bring Obama down. That is why he needs her to give a respectable performance tonight, so she can go back to rallying the base and not further distract his communications strategy.

Palin's performance will not affect, to any large extent Obama negatively. If she does well, her success cannot just wipe out people's memories; they still remember her poor performances. If she does badly, McCain will plunge because more independents will move towards Obama.

She will try to be charming, cute, evasive, cunning, as she has been in past exposures. But unfortunately, she will be visible to the whole nation's criticl eye. If course her die-hard supporters will say she did well. This will not be of any consequence.

Biden will be careful. But I do not feel he should let her get away with murder. She is very cunning and will try the iron fist in a velvet glove approach. If she tries that he should slam her too. She cannot continue to claim the "woman" defence if she is in politics. She has been known to really bring down her opponents, so she should expect no sympathy.

The bottom line is that Palin cannot expect to be locked up in a room before responding to a crises as president. McCain has messed up by keeping her under wraps.

One thing I am sure about: Palin will not drop out. She is too ambitious and knows that despite her weakness for being superficial, she has slipped under the carpet many times. She banks on doing it again this time. And knowing how people react,, .... who knows, she may be right.

Dick Cheney notwithstanding, and discounting the very slim chance that the "heart beat away" will become relevant an any first term, remember what the real job is that Palin and Biden are campaigning for. The vice presidency has been more a target for jokes and ridicule than a sought-after job. George Clinton, who became Thomas Jefferson's Vice President in 1805, called the job a "respectable retirement," after 18 years as Governor of New York. In 1848, Senator Daniel Webster turned down an offer to be Zachary Taylor's vice-presidential running mate, saying, "I do not propose to be buried until I am really dead." And John Nance Garner, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Vice President for his first two terms (1933-41), said the job wasn't worth a bucket of warm spit. (Actually, he used a cruder word than that.) John Adams, the country's first Vice President, famously called it "the most insignificant office." Al Gore described the job as that of "the nation's mourner," as one of his main functions was to attend the funerals of deceased world leaders and dignitaries. And McCain correctly stated that the constitutional duties of the job were to cast votes in the Senate in the rare case of a tie and to enquire every morning as to the health of the President, a fairly accurate description. In fact, from a Constitutional perspective, the VP has no other duties or powers. You hear it said in the news all the time: people vote for the top of the ticket.

The media is making more of it this time because they think it works for Obama by distracting from his own total lack of experience. Problem is, as both H. Clinton and J. Biden pointed out, with Obama, that lack of experience is out of control on day one. Indeed, as Biden stated when addressing Obama's total lack of qualifications, "the Presidency does not lend itself to on the job training." But Palin is not running for the Presidency, and according to Walter Mondale, the VP slot does in fact amount to on the job training. As Mondale, Carter's VP, once notably said when subsequently running for the Presidency, "I learned an awful lot as Vice President that I didn't know as a Senator."

I thought Joe Biden came off as an impassioned, caring and knowledgeable candidate for VP. Sarah has a down home charm also, but I agree she ignored questions to talk about what she wanted also . What's with putting the word also on almost every other sentence? It was embarrassing. She does not represent small town America.
