Too late for John McCain to pull a Joe McCarthy. No one will see McCain's change in tone as anything other than his admission that he has nothing left to say. Conservative "undecideds" already saw Bill O'Riley go round and round with Obama about Ayers and Wright, and O'Riley concluded that he likes Obama personally and doesn't believe that he intends harm to America. Sad to see McCain keep shribbling in the eyes of voters.

Why not accuse McCain of sympathizing with organized crime based on his long relationship with his father-in-law, the late Jim Hensley, a twice convicted felon who got his start in the beer business through shady dealings with organized crime figures?

Why not accuse McCain of plotting illegal partisan dirty tricks based on his ties to Gordon Liddy who was convicted in Water Gate scandal and who admitted plotting to murder Howard Hunt among others? Liddy calls McCain his friend. McCain appeared recently on his radio show and said he admired his (Liddy's) principles. Liddy spent over four years in prison, but today has a radio show spewing poison the lunatic fringe of the far right.

Why not accuse Sarah McCain of wanting to succeed from the united states based on ties to the Alaskan Independence Party whose goal it is to succeed from the United States? Her husband was a member for two years, she attended their convention and less than a year ago lauded the group in TV address to their convention....certainly a closer relationship than Obama's to Ayers.

Forget the crucial issues in this time of crisis, they need to follow the true conservative agenda: win at all costs and forget your integrity. So much garbage this year from the GOP. So many lies. So much headline grabing and populist swing moves. And now their crying about the press and slinging mud.

Sickening and disheartening to most Americans, they aren't consirned about us, only themselves.

That Chicken Little McCain caves in to his handlers and resorts to this junk is just another sign of his inclination to panic when things aren't going well. He's becoming more and more erratic. How will he handle a real national crisis?

I do think he's right though. The sky is falling in. He should have suspended his campaign for good.

Ladies and Gentleman, this is the most grave situation this nation has faced in my lifetime. We just experienced an over-hyped, outrageous primary election season that has left me wondering where the heads of our citizens are hiding - must be someplace where the sun doesn't go very often. At one time in my life I was a determined, dedicated and ever-loyal registered Democrat. Then something happened. Lyndon Baines Johnson turned my life around and gave me pause for the veracity of a party that lives and feeds off of the most unfortunate among us. Some of them are in their positions of life by their own choosing, others by outside circumstances. But always, always there was a door open to them, to reach for new heights, achieve new goals, change their lives for the better. Similarly, there have always been the bottom feeders, doing what they could to take advantage of those who had not or have not seen better days, nor realized that they in fact were the masters of their own destiny. These unfortunates had come to believe that they were dependent on people in Washington, who would look out for and take care of them. They waited and still wait for all those promised freebies.

Most people don't reflect upon the fact that the Democrats ruled Washington for over 40 years; it wasn't until 1994 when the so-called Gingrich Revolution changed - but only for a while. These same people do not realize that it was the Democrats who created the failed policies of the entitlement programs that are now falling apart before our eyes.

Do not think I find the Republicans blameless in all this. They, too, suffer from the ego and greed built into our system. But in the past few months I have listened with growing horror to the railings of the left, calling for yet more giveaways, more promises of a proverbial free lunch. What sums up my feelings - why I am appalled by those in political power - is contained within a quote by basketball legend and talk show host Charles Barkley: "Poor people have been voting for Democrats for the last fifty years...and they are still poor."

Now, with our elections, come yet more new promises of change we can believe in, for the future. But if you really - I mean REALLY - listen to what the new messiah is asking for, it is not change of policy or change for the better. This is a warning that he wants our change. And the change you will get will not be the change you expected or wanted. I leave you my predictions of what will happen if the junior Senator from Illinois becomes President, especially if the House and Senate are veto-proof Democrat.

1). Strict gun laws, though he promised he would not.

2). "In God We Trust" will be removed from all currency.

3). He will renege on his pledge to Israel and leave them to the wolves of Islam.

4). Hillary Clinton will be named to the Supreme Court.

5). Tax rates will surge to the highest levels in 30 years.

6. Capital gains tax will be at least double current levels.

7). Retired Army General Wesley Clark will be named Secretary of Defense.

8). Our borders will be open to all comers, especially from the Middle East and South America.

9). Amnesty will be granted to all illegals in the U.S, regardless of status or even gang membership (think MS-13).

10). Our presence in Iraq will come to an abrupt end with tragic results to their citizens and devastating consequences to our military.

My predictions will not sit well with some people. The best we could hope for is that I am wrong. Any bets?

There's another danger for McCain in going on the attack this late, and it's underappreciated and seldom mentioned. Most (probably all) of the swing voters I know simply haven't seen any fire from Obama. Because they aren't watching (and have no interest in watching) stump speeches, their impression of Obama is that of someone who is calculated and calm with none of the aggressive leadership qualities that typically define great presidents.

In playing this card, McCain has opened the door to a very public display of the fire his supporters have seen for over a year. And instead of spinning it to reflect the "angry black man" stereotype (like they could have done a month ago), the public will not only expect, but welcome some aggressive behavior from Obama. That's a can of worms that I honestly don't think Steve Schmidt fully appreciates.

It will not work. Senator McCain is on the wrong side of every issue substantively. He has been a life-long deregulator and someone who has always trusted Wall Street with "voluntary guidelines". He proposed recently to bring the policies that deregulated our banking industry to our health care industry in the belief that this would help. He is not a bad man, but he is wrong on almost everything right now. Since he desperately wants to be President, his lack of substantive plans does not matter much to him right now-- he will do what he feels is necessary (including throwing as much false mud as he can find) to try and secure victory. Senator McCain once was an honorable man, and probably will be again once Senator Obama is elected and Senator McCain returns to the Senate.

Other GOP'ers who also cannot stand to see the era of deregulation and "voluntary guidelines" pass into the mist have also convinced themselves that any falsehood is just fine. Some have even convinced themselves that their false witness is reality. This is sad, but this too shall pass. Some GOP'ers feel a sense of sadness about all of this, and are unsure how to proceed. Hardly any rank & file Republican to whom I speak actually wants to continue the deregulation and "voluntary guidelines" policies that Senator McCain likes. So-- Senator McCain throws out as much mud as he can to try and blind us from the truth 'lest Senator Obama win in an overwhelming landslide....

But it will not work. In times of crisis, Americans come together to fix our Country; we do not tear each other limb from limb. This truth is why this ugliness will not work. Senator McCain will lose and return to the Senate. And guess what? We, the American People, will forgive him this desperate attempt to rip our Country apart, and to insult those of us who support Senator Obama by suggesting that those of us who cannot afford more than $200 must be "foreigners" when what we are is nothing more than struggling Americans who would like nothing more than to have more than $200 to donate....

We will forgive Senator McCain this immoral desperation because Senator Obama is absolutely right about all of us, Americans ARE a decent, generous people.

Down Mexico Way, I think that you are free to express yourself but I do not think that you are serious. You do not seem to have thought through the points you made below. I think you are just saying things to tarnish Obama. This does not help McCain in any way. You are missing the issue being discussed here. Too bad that you cannot contribute effectively.

McCain is getting dirty. Is this beneficial to himself? The answer is "No". Of course they will try to argue that they have to say these things, to turn people's attention from the real problems being discussed by Obama and the nation. Again McCain is showing his selfish tendencies. He wants to win at all costs. On the other hand Obama is focused and interested in showing voters what he has to offer.

McCain has being involved in very dubious associations. If you reason this well you may come to realize that the McCain campaign is not behaving honorably. Obama was 8 when Ayer did what he did. As a man Obama worked in with Ayer, who is now a respected person, on a board. What do board members do? They discuss about the business at hand and they often sit and drink a coffee. So by doing this Obama is a terrorist. I think you and others need to have their heads examined.

You know in all of this there is deep and implicit racism. Let us not be reluctant to mention it. Palin talks about Obama not being one of "us". He is a different person. The underlying insinuation for the benefit of prejudiced and racist voters is that he is black, he has a name that is not christian, and he is a sinister person. Palin, just by listening to her and looking at her record is an ignorant person who will do or say anything she is told to get ahead.

She mentions that she is a christian. She may be in name but not in her heart. What she does is very unchristian. She walks on people to get ahead. She lies and distorts to move ahead. People who know her have exposed her unchristian habits. I maintain that Obama is a more christian person than Palin. Just watch how Obama respects people and carries himself. He is an example. Palin does not in any way strike me as being a good christian. She is a show woman. Maybe McCain will do well to open a circus with her as a side show. She seems to be very effective at that.

As for McCain, I have really not met someone who changes so much from one minute to the other. He should be called the McChameleon. The guy just does not seem to have any fixed views. Just watch the compilation of videos on him: he says something now and 8 minutes later he says the opposite. It is so embarrassing. This brings me to his readiness and competence to be POTUS. He is too erratic and seems to be unstable each day. Another pilot from the vietnam war who was in prison longer than McCain and who was super decorated has said that McCain is not fit to be president because he is not stable. These guys know each other. He worries that McCain changes his position too often and even embraces religion now when he was never a religouus person.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that McCain has used his prisoner-of-war experience as a bulldozer to go ahead. Being a prisoner does not qualify one to be POTUS. He has had a real free ride over all these years even ex-servicement feel he is using this as a credit card to buy his way to the presidency. After all, there were hundreds of prisoners like him who did really heroic things. For some reason the american media do not want to challenge him on this. This is unfortunate because he is uses it to bluff his way though. I am waiting for him to use this prisoner talk during his debate with Obama tomorrow to get sympathy. He never misses. Hey, enough is enough. We want to have substance from him not this mantra of being a prisoner.

The bottom line; it appears that the Obama campaign should bring out McCain's personal flaws to show his unstable behavior, lack of respect for women (insulting his wife in public), his tendency to lie, and never admitting any mistake even when pointed out to him (e.g. in the news media). Obama must do this delicately but effectively. Meanwhile Obama must remain cool as usual but concentrate on the issues that trouble the voters (economy, education, health, energy, etc). So far he is doing well and he will shine tomorrow during the second debate.

In the beginning of this campain he said that negative campain had no place in a Presidential race....now listen to him...is he losing his memory? It sems that the majority of people think that McCain's tactics are not working for them, he went way too far and it feels to me like he has really alienated people - at least the people he needs to attract. The people that he has on his side already might be pleased, but looking at the boards they (his supporters) are more likely to attack people as being foolish for voting to Obama than anything else... Everything he has tried has not worked... he hasn't seemed to notice that Americans aren't stupid for the most part and aren't going to fall for his desperate manuvers.

John McCain's newest policy reversal: from a vow to run a clean campaign, to last minute desperation of name calling and fear mongering, is exactly why people have turned away from him. He has changed his position so many times during the campaign he has no credibility. Perhaps his biggest gaffe was his sworn intention to choose the "most qualified" running mate and coming up not with Kay Bailey Hutchison, or Condolezza Rice but Sarah Palin! Just today as he attacked Obama for being "complicit in the economic crisis," I read that John Thain, former chairman of the former investment house, Merrill Lynch, is one of the top republican fund raisers, and has brought in over $500,000 for McCain. Talk about complicity...

I don't think it will work. They seem desparate and shrill, especially Palin. With all the problems we have, they need to be addressing the issues and giving a detailed plan on what they would do about the economy. And I mean REAL ANSWERS -- not the skirting around the issues with the cutesey winks. I think Palin has a few ministers in her background who raise some questions so I wouldn't think she would go down that path. Most people find mud-slinging in the gutter distasteful. We have too many serious problems to be subjected to that.

ohreallynow....I am in the same camp as you.

As of 8/1/08 I was pretty firmly behind McCain (orginally a Hillary supporter). I literally would not vote for him now if someone paid me $10,000. There are four reasons:

1. His nomination of Sarah Palin

2. His lies about Obama's tax plan (I am an economist, so I can decipher the truth)

3. His level of angry and random behavior

I think we are going to see a major downward turn of the RNC. McCain's decision to distract the American people by "going negative" not only is another example of his poor judgment and character which Americans have heard about second -hand , but never experienced first hand.

I am just appauled watching this former P.O.W., pathetically attacking Senator Obama and playing the whole patriotism game and scare tactics from the old Bush playbook. McCain is just shamelessly showing his true colors during these last few weeks of the election, and those colors are not America's Red, White, and Blue!!!

1. The problem with this current brand of Republican Conservatism is that it is too radically shifted to the Right.

When Reagan started suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s, The GOP became too rigid to the Right and on the dumb idea that the Economy can take care of itself without Government oversight, instead of the pragmatism of the First George Bush, who despite the his pledge of no new taxes, realized that they were needed to stabilize the economy back then.

As an Independent, I’ve found that the ideas of Obama are moderately and progressively conservative - socially responsible without the rigidness and ignorance of the Religious Right and respectful that the market should run itself but within limits set by the Government. If Republican Conservatism is to come back, it should take lessons on Obama’s brand of Conservatism and adapt to the times. NO

I hate this type of campaigning. Long ago, when McCain still talked about issues and i still believed he would run an honorable campaign, I considered voting for him. When he did the first Brittany Spears/ celebrity ad, I decided I could not vote for someone who had such a character that he would lie about this. I pray Obama does not pick up this bait and throw the mud back he could..there is no need. We see McCain for who he is...not in the campaign, but in his weakness to let Schmidt and other campaign managers manage him rather than him lead them. We don't know who either JOhn or Sarah are for they can only repeat their given lines now...and these lines of hate will destroy the country they purport to be for...i'm very sad for the way this campaign is being run when there are so many real issues to talk about.

If Obama had chosen the smear tactic to enhance his failing campaign the general attitude would take on racial overtones. However, when a white man resorts to the lowest common demonaitor to rescue his campaign this same judgement is overlooked. The Keating five scandle does not compare to the in any meaningful way to the Rev. Wright statements. The mud slinging by the McCain/Palin dynamic duo has nothing left in its arsenal but name calling and smear tactics.

Additionally, consider that McCain has refused the advice of other seasoned politicans about how to manage a campaign. He also refused the advice for choosing a running mate; refused to listen to anyone but his own desires in a confused effort to bolster his self image as a maverick. Therefore, how well will he listen to the will of the people if he were to gain office? It does appear that his vision of the future is of his own making no matter what else happens to contradict that vision. Only he knows best.

Please pay special note to how he treats Sarah Palin as it is an indication of his feelings toward the role of women in the future of this country. As long as she mouths the words he want her to say he will allow her to speak. Is this how women see their future in a McCain administration?

McCainn may try to avoid the economic issues facing us today if we allow him to side step and only sling mud at Obama. And although Barack Obama is quite capable of defending himself I demand more of a Presidential candidate than lies and mud slinging. Is this the example we want to show other countries where democracy is just beginning?

I want the bar raised to a higher standard for national elections. I will vote for Obama.

Not sticking up for either one. I would like to know about Obama's relations with those people. I remember them. Plus, why has he not made his Thesis available? Hillary did. And McCain, the Keating situation was not good at all. Maybe it was Keaton....Ok I am getting old timers. We all made misstakes. Questions on both sides. How is Obama going to spend a trillion dollars if he wins? Like there is money. Also, Why isn't the CEO'S in jail? They need to freeze their assets, and make them sell their homes. Pay back the money they stole. We need to vote all of our so called protectors and por k pocketers out of there. I will vote for the underdog. Obama accuses McCain of being "erratic". If It is true, it is not illegal. He can't be thrown in Jail for that, but accusing Obama of being a terrorist, even by association, is accusing him of being something akin to a murderer. I have seen three different Sarah Palin "speeches" since Friday's debate. My theory: the hemming and hawwing w/ MSM interviews was a complete pretense. She intentionally failed to asnwer about newspapers, Supreme Court decisions to throw Biden...and, Obama, off track. The tactic left Joe Biden in a bind to not go after her, which he really didn't. She is a perfect, robotic, viscious attacker. I am amazed at how divisive and lowly she is. But, she certainly isn't at a loss for words, however faulty and contrived those words might be. She is one very scary individual, who, like John McCain is basically soulless and hallow. This pair will stop at nothing. I do not put ANY TACTIC--even violence--past the desperate attempts at the presidency by John McCain. I think the American people are finally waking up and seeing what a fake John McCain is. People make me sick. I hadn't heard about people yelling for Obama to be killed at the Palin rallies. It really scares me. I can't believe we are still in this place in 2008. That the republican party is filled with a constituency that would condone such behavior. I know there are repulicans who aren't on the crazy right. I wish those people would speak out more. Yesterday I saw a documentary about Henry Ford and his anti-semitism. He wrote a regular column wherein he would talk against jews and how they needed to be stopped in their plot to take over. Ford was Mr. Amercia. When you think american cars you think Ford. I couldn't believe it. He was even loosely associated with the KKK. In fact, the first lynching by the KKK (they were called something else then) was of a jewish man found guilty of a murder he didn't committ. It just blows my mind that this still exists today. Some people are so ready to believe that the black man that is running for president is a terrorist sympathizer!! It's crazy. And we have politicians like McCain and Palin ready to fuel these crazy lies. And I think Palin might actually believe this stuff. She has the small town mind and those extreme religious leanings that create this kind of crazy thinking. She really, really scares me. I know the world is slowly changing for the better. It has to. We are always evolving. And the dying breed is the repulican party as it looks today. It doesn't look like American today. It looks like Amercian 60 years ago. And change is inevitable, no matter how hard they fight to turn back the clock it ain't happenin. But the transition is so uncomfortable and I am afraid for my candidate.

Please quit comparing Mc Cain to Bush, just because they are both of the same party doesn't mean that they will both do the same things. But as far as always bashing what Bush has done, think about supporting the elected people and praying for them. How do you really think it makes us look to forgien countries that we send men and women into harms way, and at home we can't even stick together on anything. One axiom in chess is that if you are ahead in points (pieces are each given a point value), then it's smart to exchange value for value (pieces with the same point value) as this leads to an end game where your material advantage can be quickly brought to bear, resulting in sure victory. Obama seems to be pursuing the same strategy. He's ahead and thus can exchange attacks with McCain which cancel each other out, the net result being a end-game victory.

Obama and his team know what they are doing. It's perfect strategy. I don't know what McCain's team is thinking, if they are thinking at all. They must come up with a better strategy, though I can't think of one that would give them victory at this point.

People have already determined that Obama is presidential and is prepared for the job. His even temperament and superior command of the issues has provided the reassurance. I cannot foresee any scandal changing that.

I think things in this country are serious enough for the American public to see through all of the allegations being made against and being thrown at Senator Obama. At the end of the day he is a man who has spent 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, created a voter registration drive that registered 150,000 new voters, spent 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spent 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spent 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees. If there was anything to be afraid of it would have come to light long before now. He's been married to the same woman for 19 years, has 2 beautiful daughters, 1 house and can relate to the concerns of mainstream America more than McCain. The fact that all they have in their bag of tricks at this point is William Ayers (also a college professor) , Jeremiah Wright and where his campaign contributions come from (items that IF they were concerns would have been tackled long ago) lead me to believe that they are running scared.

What has been lacking for the past eight years in the White House. You had people who when the going got tough they lost their judgement. They paniced. The decisions to invade Iraq and the unwillingness to change course in time to make a difference. The current market crisis. The arrogance of the grandstand carrier landing when the war wasn't resolved to name a few. Now take a look at what Senator McCain has done in the last six weeks with a campaign at stake. He picked an underqualified running-mate, did that crazy suspension of the campaign stunt and now is destrying his own good name with a smear campaign. One of the reasons I am voting for Obama/Biden is that they have shown that they can stand in a flury of garbage being thrown at them and continue to stay focused on the real issues. Oh if we had had people who could do that over the past eight years think where we might be. It is ironic that growing up as a black man in America one must endure a barrage of insults and slights and if sucessful one is educated to be strong in a crisis. When you read about the strength of George Washington from the perspectives of his contemporaries they cite his command of his emotions. I think that is the true test of the kind of leader we need right now. You have to ask yourself which candidate has that quality?

Although I am unable to vote,I have admired John McCain for behaving like a politician regardless of his party affiliation. For me, it really was a toss-up between Obama and McCain. They both presented the voices of reason and thoughtfulness. Both have my respect as politicians, But recently,McCain's seems to be submitting to Rove-style advice: his choice of naive Palin as a VP really frightens me,and reflects on his judgment and now these character attacks on Obama (which are really old news dished up again) just seem to speak of someone in a sinking ship.If he felt he had a position of power,I don't think he would stoop so low. As a result his actions have solidified my support for Obama.

To be fair, I also wish that Obama had not retaliated but taken the high road.For once,can't we have a presidential campaign with candidates behaving with presidential demeanor?

The responsibility for the extra100 billion-plus dollars the new bailout bill cost, should be placed directly at John McCain's feet. McCain's injection of presidential politics stopped the $700 billion version of the bill from becoming law--according to the House Republicans who voted against it the first time. The failure of the $700 billion version made the $850 billion version necessary to woo those House Republicans who voted against it. If McCain eliminated every earmark for an 8 year presidency he would not save as much US taxpayer money as he wasted in an effort to revive his failing presidential campaign. McCain is a dangerous impulsive man who does not have temperament needed to be president. No wonder he wants to change the subject.

McCain said back in April he would not engage in attacks or a smear campaign. Guess he forgot to tell Palin that, same as he "forgot" to tell her he was pulling out of Michigan. One has to remember that William Ayers was never prosecuted and never convicted of his alleged crimes back in the 60's. Some people do turn their life around and have since the Viet-Nam war. She said that she was listening to Biden's speeches when she was in 2nd grade. I find that hard to believe. She was pregnant when she and Todd married and now her daughter is in the same predicament. McCain left his disabled wife for the beauty with bucks. Where are the family values and morals here? Obama has said that he was at a party at Ayers house, they were on a charity board together, they live in the same neighborhood and their children go to school together. I am old enough to remember when you could disagree with the opposing party's views but still be able to work together. Those different views could transform into something that wasn't strictly ideological but could be something that worked.Our country doesn't work for its citizens anymore, but for its corporations. How appalled would we all have been 25 years ago to hear that it was the lobbyists writing the language of our bills and not our Congress? The tone that we use in our campaigns and with each other has degraded into something so ugly it makes me sick. If I disagree with you that doesn't make me evil and vice versa, Who is going to change that? McCain or Obama? McCain's dirty ads show how he will behave. No more "My way, or the highway" politics. As I read through the various comments it struck me as very odd that the McCain Palin supporters still want to focus on negative attacks. I personnally had planned to vote Republican for the first time in my life had Hucklebee won the nomination. I am a African American woman with three college degrees and had focused on the issues nothing more nothing less. As time has gone on I have listened to both sides and when McCain pulled Palin out and when I listened to her I was quickly able to see that I would vote Democratic. I am a veteran twice over (Air Force and Army), I still work for the government but I have investments that have taken a plunge, I have a child in college who has friends that have had to drop out because their families could no longer afford tution. I have read many of the false email and have had to ask people to stop forwarding them to me because quite frankly if one has not decided by now then issues iare not something that they care for. McCain at this point seems to ask like a spoiled kid who has decided if I cannot win fairly then I will pick up my marbles and go home. I really hate to call another female dumb or stupid but I have to rank Palin in that category because she seems to babble on most of the time with no clear focus or diirection. Lots of people want to latch onto the negative about Obama but have people forgotten that Mrs. McCain stole drugs from her own charity, Keating Five, Palin under investigation and these are first hand issues. Trying to cast doubt on Obama for mere association is crazy to say the least. I know many families who have at least one person that they wished were not from the same DNA pool but that does not make the entire family responsible or guilt by association. One thing Obama has done is to quickly distance himself once those with questionable dealings and state so.

I ask the McCain supporters why is it so easy to forget the negative in your own but something totally different when it is someone else. Lastly I can not imagine what it feels like to be a teenager, unwed and pregnant but I do know that I have seen young mothers and many say that to have their mother there unconditionally and loyally helped them make it through. I have an adult daughter and I would have been mortified if she had gotten herself into that situation but I do know that I would have never ever put her on display and the subject of worldwide ridicule. McCain is now have another famous temper tantrum and it is just sad.I would have more respect for him and Palin had they decided to stick with the issues rather than treat every American as though we were mere idiots with this I know you are but what am I mentality.

Once you are reduced to attacking your opponent you've lost. McCain could still win if he actually got out there and differentiate his Reagan economics from Bush's economics. He could argue the merit of true conservative philosophy. Unfortunately he's afraid to attack Bush, and he doesn't understand economics well enough to make that case, so he's reduced to attacking the other guy...meaning he's lost. The economy is going to be in the news cycle for at least two more weeks, meaning there will be only 1-2 news cycles remaining before the election for McCain to change what is looking like an Obama blowout. Unless they find video of Obama preaching black power with Wright, or planning a bombing with Ayres, this negative stuff is just recyeled and stale news. It won't moce the needle towards McCain.

What is wrong with you people. Don't you want to know the truth? Your associations are very important - people gather with people that think like them. Why has Barack been trying to cover up? Ayers is certainly more that the guy down the street, if you would bother to listen and read more than one bias station/publication. If in 20 years he did not know about Rev. Wright then he does not have a grasp on the things around him. At first he defended him, but when he noticed it was not helping him in the polls - he dropped this supposedly person that was so close to him like a hot potato. Why does he not release his senior thesis until after the election? He knows what's in it and probably the public won't like it; by the time he does realease it, it will be too late. But let's not forget fellow Arizonian Rick Renzi, the co-chair for the McCain campaign as late as February 2008. Renzi was indicted for wire fraud, extortion, money laundering and other corrupt activities while serving in congress. When McCain was asked if Renzi was still a part of his campaign, McCain said "It doesn't matter."

I cannot for the life of me understand why McCain would want to start bringing up associations with unsavory characters. He's made a career of doing exactly that and can ill afford the spotlight on his own associations from Keating days clear up to the present. It's almost as if in his arrogance, he just assumes we're all so stupid we won't remember anything earlier than two hours ago.

I feel you JeffG24. These past 8 years have been the worst time of my life too. After living fair as a daughter of a middle class family with a small business in the 90s, my dad's health care made him wait 6 months for surgery which caused complications and he passed away from the damage of those complications last year, just 2 months later my mom had a stroke which left her disabled, we lost the family business because of high medical bills we were still paying on and my mom had yet another stroke in July of this year which has left her in a nursing home now. I have had to move to a bigger city to find work since all the good jobs in my hometown were outsourced or had major layoffs, meaning I've had to commute an hour away until I can get enough money for a deposit on an apartment. My mom meanwhile is by herself in a nursing home until I can get settled and find her a place here as well. Yes, the past 8 years have been a real pain in my you know what!!!!

I am simply not surprised anymore with what the McCain campaign comes up with. Soon they are going to start claiming that Obama is the antichrist. Throughout this campaign, they have managed to stoke fears that Obama is muslim (like simply being one is a dangerous thing, but the fact that Obama is actually christian is not known to many people), link him to all sorts of associations with crooks, sometimes simply on the basis of Obama being in the same room with a person, lie about his tax plan for the middle class, continue to charge that the media is biased (to innoculate their lies). Now they claim Barack Obama is associated with the Weathermen (Obama was 8 when they were active!). There is a difference between an casual acquaintance, and an undeniable influence on someone's decisions. Yes, indeed Obama has gone into attack mode as well, but his attacks are based on far more relevant associations like McCain's deep links with Lobbyists (the McCain campaign is both financially supported and staffed by lobbies, and he has demonstrated his culpability to corrupt commercial influence thru the Keating 5 scandal), McCain's dangerous healthcare plan (taxing your healthcare benefits to give you healthcare tax credits), his proposal to open up social security for investment decisions (good idea, but also adding considerable risk to people's security net), and McCain's behavior (claiming that the fundamentals of our economy is strong, and then messing up the bailout talks for political gain, his impulsive my-way-or-the-highway approach to foreign policy, his irresponsible selection of Palin), his tactics of dividing the electorate on choices that do not matter to the challenges we are facing today (guns, abortion, gay marriage etc), and his unethical attempts at voter caging across swing states to disqualify democrat votes. So while both campaigns have gone negative, we need to take things into perspective, and understand the difference between mud slinging versus relevant criticism, they are very different things. I have given up trying to convince the hard-core right wingers, and racially prejudiced people, because these are a group that have been completely swayed by their own preconceived notions about a candidate they have not even tried to read up about. This group has been hugely affected by John McCain's systematic strike at the media establishment (so they can say anything they want), to believe only what John McCain is saying, and have been programmed to allow their prejudice to claim that Obama is not experienced enough. TRUTH IS, YOU CAN HIRE EXPERIENCE AND YOU CAN BUY KNOWLEDGE, BUT WHAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE IS A PERSON'S JUDGMENT AND THE FUNDAMENTAL MORAL COMPASS THAT GUIDES IT. I am hoping that the Independent voters and undecided voters, who tend to be more deliberate, and inquisitive in their considerations would be able to make these critical distinctions.

There were 5 Senators investigated. 4 Democrats, and 1 Republican, John McCain. Three Senators were determined to have acted improperly… Cranston (D), Riegle (D) and DeConcini (D). The other two Senators were found to have done nothing improper and received no censure. Senators John Glenn (American Hero & Astronaut) and John McCain (American Hero and POW) were both criticized for poor judgment for attending meetings, but neither was considered to have had significant involvement, and neither was deemed to have committed impropriety, violation of law or violation of Senate Rules.

The 3 Senators censured did not seek re-election and their years in elected office were ended.

Senator John Glenn sought and won re-election, serving until he retired in 1999. Senator John McCain has been re-elected thru his present term and run for the presidency.

Let's hope it does! But is McCain really that bad off? According to one of the most reliable polls (not an Obama partisan poll which most really are) Obama has regained his lead. The NBC/WSJ poll has Obama beating McCain by 6 points (49% - 43%). This is where he was before the Palin pick which wiped out his lead over MCain.

I don't know why the Wall Street crisis should benefit a Democrat but it has. The Dems are ignorant about finance and they caused the crisis in the first place by forcing banks & finacial institutions to do away with red-lining. We now see the effect of this.

Will the Wall Street crisis recede in a month? Sure it will and Obama's lead will fizzle. This is actually a very close race. If you look at the six point difference and factor in a 3% bradley effect going to McCain, it becomes a dead heat (46% - 46%).

So for any McCain folk out there in Stumper land, don't lose heart. Get after relatives and friends and co-workers to vote for a real American instead of this exotic and toxic character with the Muslim name! Don't lose an opportunity to bash Barack!

This country is in for two years of hell if Obama wins. The Democrats will control the whole government. An Obama - Pelosi axis like the Hitler - Mussolini one! It's scary! But at least the mid term elections will return Republicans to power in both houses.

How is that the economy is Obama's strong suit? Are people really this uninformed or is it a continuation of the cover up being conducted by the MSM. Obama didn't want anything to do with the bailout discussions. The only reason either of them were in Washington at the time was because McCain said that the country must come together on this issue and find a resolution. What has Obama ever done but sit on the fence? He tells both sides anything that they want to hear to get him where he wants to be. Where does he want to be? Spending your money to support radical ideology. Taking hand outs from Iranian and Palestinian groups. It is clear that Obama will NOT allow himself to be swiftboated. He has sprung a trap on McCain by holding back the Iran-Contra and Keating 5 issues. Those are far more pertinent to foreign adventurism and financial deregulation fiasco than are Ayers and Wright.

For one, I'm glad McCain is running. He has run the WORST campaign in modern history. He overspent on foolish things and bankrupted his primary campaign. He won the nomination only because of the winner-take-all Republican system and the 3 ultraconservatives who split that vote. After the primaries, he moved RIGHT instead of to the CENTER. He wasted the spring and summer without putting together a ground game or consistent strategy against the Democrats. Then, he impulsively picked an unvetted unknown from Alaska for her gender and fundamentalist religious beliefs. Then, he pronounced the economy sound hours before the onset of calamity. He now wants to move to character assassination when the headlines are dominated by bad economic news. Thanks, John, you're making this into a landslide Democratic year, and you'll probably cost the GOP a filibuster in the Senate while you're at it. This response is to Pugnose who wrote "Some excerpts from JFK’s speech when MLK was killed….." You may have your names mixed up, but JFK was killed 5 years before Dr King so unless there is some new resurrection elixir out there that most dont know about, JFK couldnt have made that speech. And to all joining the McCain smear campaign (hey that kinda rhymes), you are also in a state of panic over the possibility of Obama winning the election. Shame on you, we can all list what we think the candidates supposed "associations" are. McCain is truely no angel by far. I mean him opposing Dr Kings birthday in Arizona is enough to label him as a racist anyway. Just to come back in May to say "it was a mistake". Pitiful, it was only a mistake because he now wants to be president. You think his campaign of "Country First" holds true when he picks someone like Sarah Palin for his VP. There are not more qualified female republicans for that position. Olympia Snow comes to mind.

You do not have your facts straight. Obama has not been forced to return any money as a result of the GOP asking for an audit. The Republican National Committee asked for the audit but could provide no definitive proof of wrongdoing. It's a political stunt being used as yet another part of the GOP strategy to make Obama seem un-American by alleging he has accepted international donations. The money they are questioning is only 1% of the total donations, all of which were donated by people certifying they were American citizens. McCain actually has received approximately $517,000 of the same type of donation that could be just as easily called into question. Most likely, only a small fraction of the contested money could turn out to be from donors misrepresenting themselves, though both campaigns have acted appropriately and with due-diligence to keep illegal money from getting into their campaigns.

Obama has voluntarily returned money that was over the maximum donation amount per person, but so far there is no indication that due-diligence was not followed in any of those cases, either. A handful of data entry errors made by contributors does not a scandal make. That is why it isn't getting a lot of press. That is of course assuming that you actually wanted your question answered.

It would be funny if the so called "Bradley Effect" work to the opposite. What happened to Bradley in 1972 or Douglas Wilder in 1984 or so may be subject to a paradigm shift due to the cultural blending of post baby boom generations. Many of these kids like the same music, same cultural cues, etc.... I can't see how a Gen X or Gen Y member is swayed by the prospect of McCain as president, or the "not one of us" arguments of Gov. Palin. Remember, Polls are conducted primarily by land line. Many of the kids only use cells. They may not vote, but again, many of them might this time, and generational wise, most young go for Obama. They don't have the same views of their more conservative parents. I bet even Jenna and Barabara Bush secretly vote for Obama (They had OUTKAST play at a private party for them). Think about it LOL.

I am prolife and I was appalled to hear that people are shouting "Kill him," at Palin rallies. How can she claim to be prolife and not immediately put a halt to that kind of shout. You can't be prolife and shout "Kill him!" Where are the moral prolife values? The mob shouting "Kill him!" sounds like the crowd shouting "Crucify him!" in the Bible.

Palin has started attacking Obama about his associations. I'm again reminded of the Bible and Jesus coming across the mob that was going to stone the woman for adultery. Jesus told them to let he who was without sin cast the first stone. Sarah Palin seems to be casting stones and so I have to ask if she is without sin?

The Supreme Court has 7 of 9 members appointed by Republicans. From 2000-2006, we had a Republican Congress and Bush, and did we get any progress against abortion? NO. We got a war in Iraq costing thousands of lives and started torturing people. You should check out Barack Obama's website regarding his revised plan to reduce the number of abortions in the US. You know, if I had my way, I'd like to see Prohibition since I'm a Christian and a doctor who sees the devestation of alcoholism on lives. But, it is not practical to try to ban something that has the support of 10% or more of the population. You just drive it underground and into the criminal element, resulting in social chaos. The abortion rate went down under Clinton, but it has gone up under Bush, because of the economic policies that hurt young and poor people who are more likely to choose abortion than life due to those factors.

The link between Obama and Ayers is tenuous at best. Barack Obama has been involved in public service for decades. During that time he has probably encountered a large number people. And in all that time, the McCain campaign only manages to come up with a couple of names. The only reason the McCain campaign is attacking these folks is because they can't come up with anything on Obama himself. On the other hand, Sarah Palin's husband was a member of a political group that wanted Alaska to secede from the union. How is that for patriotic? Her own teenage daughter was knocked up out of wedlock. How is that for family values? John McCain cheated on his first wife. How is that for honorable? BunchofChemies I have felt the same as you. The Republican party has used the prolife position for political gain without any effort to actually save the lives of unborn children. The Supreme Court always seems to be balanced at 5 liberal judges to 4 conservatives judges no matter how many conservative judges the Republicans appoint. They campaign on a prolife platform and then abandon it the moment the election is won. As long as this strategy continues to work they will continue to use it.

I have been listening to George Will and his comments about overturning Roe v Wade. He says that if Roe v. Wade were overturned it would do very little to stop or limit abortion because the issue would then be decided by the individual states. In all but two states the majority of the population is prochoice and so would not prohibit abortion. All of this posturing may make people feel good but it does nothing to stop or limit abortion. We need to look at programs that help unwed mothers and we need to help them beyond the birth of the baby. We need health insurance for all so that the cost of prenatal care and childbirth don't force poor women to seek abortions out of economic necessity. We also need to insure that birth control is available so that the number of unplanned pregnancies among the unmarried is reduced. We need to provide support to families in crisis to help them provide stablility to the children that are born.

I am prolife and voting for Obama because I don't see any prolife reason to vote for McCain/Palin. False and empty promises are false and empty promises.

The cause of this financial crisis is another burst asset bubble. This one is related to subprime mortgages, which were widely issued in the boom period of 2002-2006. The decline in housing prices in the past year have left these poorly considered loans in default. Banks made the problem worse by creating insurance, bundles, and derivatives that were not transparent and readily priced in a downturn.

To you conservatives, this has EVERYTHING to do with deregulation which is a Republican economic philosophy.

Also, the only way to unwind this ultimately is to increase the prices of those houses, This will not happen under supply-side economics, another Republican failed philosophy. It can be achieved in about 2 years by a Keynesian and monetary policy which the Democrats have done in the past, and will do again. Over the longer term, prevention of another meltdown like this will come via rational regulation, which has been a Democratic plank since FDR.

Good stuff here. I agree whole heartedly (not that you needed my endorsement). This is the biggest sign of desperation I've ever seen in politics. McCain is down and almost out. BUT..

I think that Obama is right for bringing up Keating, Iran Contra, Gibby, Palin's succession from the US, her "witchcraft" pastor, etc. Why not? That's the mistake the Kerry campaign made in 04, and Gore in 00'. Democrats always think that taking the "high" road and the nice way is going to allow voters to see that Dems are better people. No. That doesn't work.

The majority of American voters are followers, easily persuaded by lies and rhetoric and refuse to research the truth and think for themselves. There was an ignorant red neck at McCain's rally TODAY that (and MSNBC cut it RIGHT before it was said) screamed "TERRORIST" when McCain asked "Who is Barack Obama really?".

"It's getting ugly out here", stated one ABC reporter.

With that said, Obama has ALWAYS tried to bring the issues back to the table, it's McCains desperation that forced Obama to retaliate and for good reason.

Obama has to remain aggressive, a prevent defense won't work. The more shrill McCain and Palin become the more the counterattacks from Obama will drive the message that McCaain is erratic and Palin is unqualified. The GOP is grasping at straws. They have nothing substantive against Obama, but boy are they good at making up lies. This has been a leading Karl Rove tactic for years, and if America falls for this again we should be ashamed of ourselves. Not to mention the obvious fact that this is all a smokescreen to keep the focus off of the fact that Palin and her Alaska associates are in contempt of court for refusing to testify in the Troopergate hearings. After Nixon and Clinton, Americans are to some extent jaded, but really, would you want a VP who refuses to attend hearings in her own defense, and instructs her employees not to testify? That smells like guilt. It surely doesn't give the impression that she has done no wrong and has nothing to hide.

This year, the GOP offers you an angry old man and a woman who, while personable, is desperately uniformed about national and international issues. Both of them are far right politically. McCain used to be a maverick, but since 2004 he's voted 90% with Bush. McCain's policies are not original or reformist, despite how he's tried to co-opt Obama's popular message of change. Please go to the websites of both of the candidates and read their platforms. Obama's Blueprint for Change has more good ideas than McCain's plan. Compare them yourself. Obama's basic premise is that tax dollars should be spent to make America stronger and to improve the lives and well being of our people. For example, he uses education programs to train a new technology workforce, contributing to energy independence, creating jobs and improving the economy. When you read McCain's plan you will find no over-arching design to get America back on track. Instead you'll find more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation of the health care industry, and a stated intent to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I'm a Republican. Although I embrace some forward-thinking social values, in the past I've rarely voted Democrat. My thinking was that since Republicans grow robust economies, by voting Republican I'd be endorsing a plan that would grow wealth for our nation, and then we'd be able to afford social programs. It was a good strategy for a couple decades, but I have to say that the tenure of W. Bush has changed my mind. Not only is there nothing fiscally responsible about today's GOP, the insidious alignment of the party with religious intolerance has really turned me off.

On the other hand, the intelligent luminous thought of Barack Obama has ignited my passion for politics and my patriotism. I want a President who puts America first and can get the economy back on track. In my mind, values voting takes a back burner when we are faced with a meltdown of the economy. It is time for a change, a real change. The Republicans have controlled the Presidency for 28 of the past 40 years, but they have fallen down on the job. The Democrats have a stellar candidate this year, and I am voting for Obama.

The verdict is in. At a time when the terrible, terrible state of the economy is causing US citizens such as the guy in California to kill this morning his wife, three children, mother-in-law and self, why do we continue to participate in mudslinging. The state of our economy is a very serious and grave issue at this time. We can not waste time engaging in mudslinging that the only purpose it serves is to divert the very, very serious issues of the economy that our country is faced with. I think we as Americans are very capable of determining one’s character, thats our job and we don’t need any help in accomplishing it. Please this is our time (the American People), we have a decision to make on Nov 4, which is only weeks away. We would ask that the candidates not waste any more of our time trying to influence the us whether or not someones character is upstanding, we can do that. What we wish would be done is for the candidates to take time and share a strategy dealing with the economy with us that we don’t loose anymore people as we already have in the case in California to collateral damage.

To continue to assert that Sen. McCain has always put country first and is continuing to do so in this election is laughable. McCain has turned from most of the policies that made him a "maverick" at the time he ran against W. I recall in 2000, this lifelong Democrat was becoming reasonably certain that in a race against Al Gore, McCain was going to get my vote. The candidate before me now is barely recognizable! One such tactic is to try and scare less informed people about the other candidate. Calling Senator Obama a redical terrorist with terrorist associaitoins is a pretty typical tactic. They'll use his name because it is Islamic, they will tie him to anything that seems dangerous or radical no matter how tenuous or downright untrue, They are in it to win it, They are going to start playing hard ball for the next 4 weeks. You have to try and remain above the mud slinging. Try and stick to what really matters - the economy and the war. See what they have to say about that, The McCain campaign has admitted they will be using these tactics because they are losing ground to Obama, Senator Obama is not a terrorist and America most cetrainly will not become Marxist or Socialist or Communist under ANYBODY'S presidency. Not in this country. Not in a million years. No sir. Will not happen.

Reading your comment leads me to question if you would just blindly follow someone because you happen to share one thing in common. By your logic all active duty military and veterans should blindly follow McCain. My my entire immediate family served our country so I do feel that I am entitled to choose to disagree with anyone. Being African American, Hispanic, White or whatever has absolutely nothing to do with picking the future leader of our country. I watch and listen and I am also privy to many issues that you may not have firsthand knowledge of. McCain may be a veteran (I know several veterans who had endured torture during Vietnam) but nonetheless he has shown time and time again that he and Palin think nothing of mowing down the less fortunate to get what they want. Palin has actually been called to task due the overt racial tones of her campaign stops.

Just for the record I have not asked for or needed any reparations. I was raised in a very educationed home with BOTH of my parents, financially well off and all three of us children went to college and obtained Degrees (Bachelors and Masters). Despite what your ignorance may tell you many people have focused on the issues and not the nonsense and hate that has been coming from McCain and Palin. Anyone who looks at this race in terms of Black or White has much more issues deep within themselves and probably lacks the intelligence to be granted the right to vote but America being what it is allows even the most ignorant to vote. Please read and do some research because you seem very hostile for no real reason.

Please do yourself a favor and try to step outside of yourself and check your facts because all of the African Americans that I know and speak to are NOT asking for reparations. By the by I come from a family of mixed heritage and have been confused more with being of Hispanic origin than African American but I choose to recognize all aspects of my heritage.

I think the problem of Obama's friends is something that needs to be aired.

I remember the old adage: Show me your friends and your acquaintances and I can tell you what you are. I am not talking about race, it's character regardless of the color of your skin, values!!!

So much of what Barack Obama is or was is not being looked into by the main street media. I need answers to these questions, not your opinions. I want the facts.

I prefer that the American people not the media elect our next President.

Obama is getting a bump out of this because people are not being reminded of the whole history where the economy is concerned, and who did what when. Call it bias by omission. The media simply says that the economy is Obamas strong issue, but never discusses the facts in detail. Further, who had a majority when is rarely relevant. If the simplistic Party In Power model were true, then the Democrats would not have needed the House Republicans when they tried to pass the bailout bill, as Democrats have the majority in both houses and there is no threat of a veto. In theory, they do not need the Republicans to vote at all. In fact, something like twelve (12) Democrats from Barney Franks own banking committee voted against the bill. Obviously, it is not so simple and the media does the voter a disservice by doing little more than reinforcing the error. A similar argument would be to say that the economy appeared to be doing fine until the Democrats took over control of Congress and the power of the purse in 2006, then it tanked. As an aside, the media also misleads regarding the Clinton economy when they fail to mention that it also ended in a recession, requiring the first round of Bush stimulus checks immediately after he took office..

Do Obama and the Democrats deserve a lift in the polls as a result of the financial and mortgage problems? The answer from history is a clear NO. Here's the lead of a New York Times story on September 30, 1999:

"Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending" [link below]. That's 1999 folks. Clinton Administration, I believe.

Here's the lead of a New York Times story on Sept. 11, 2003:

"The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago. "[see link below] The Democrats killed the reforms.

McCain said in co-sponsoring the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190:

"If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole. The Democrats killed the Bill.

What was Barney Frank and fellow Democrats saying at the time of these attempted reforms? According to reports, Representative Barney Frank(D-MA) claimed of the thrifts :

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) added of the reforms "I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing." 2000: Secretary Summers sent Undersecretary Gary Gensler to Congress seeking an end to the "special status". Democrats raised a ruckus as did Fannie and Freddie, headed by politically connected CEO's who knew how to reward and punish. "We think that the statements evidence a contempt for the nation's housing and mortgage markets" Freddie spokesperson Sharon McHale said. It was the last chance during the Clinton era for reform.

2001: Republicans try repeatedly to bring fiscal sanity to Fannie and Freddie but Democrats blocked any attempt at reform; especially Rep. Barney Frank and Sen.Chris Dodd who now run key banking committees and were huge beneficiaries of campaign contributions from the mortgage giants.

2003: Bush proposes what the NY Times called "the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago". Even after discovering a scheme by Fannie and Freddie to overstate earnings by $10.6 billion to boost their bonuses, the Democrats killed reform.

2005: Then Fed chairman Alan Greenspan warns Congress: "We are placing the total financial system at substantial risk". Sen. McCain, with two others, sponsored a Fannie/Freddie reform bill and said, "If congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole". Sen. Harry Reid accused the GOP ;of trying to "cripple the ability of Fannie and Freddie to carry out their mission of expanding homeownership" The bill went nowhere.

2007: By now Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee over HALF of the $12 trillion US mortgage market. The mortgage giants, whose executive suites were top-heavy with former Democratic officials, had been working with Wall St. to repackage the bad loans and sell them to investors. As the housing market fell in '07, subprime mortgage portfolios suffered major losses. The crisis was on, though it was 15 years in the making.

2008: McCain has repeatedly called for reforming the behemoths, Bush urged reform 17 times. Still the media have repeated Democrats' talking points about this being a "Republican" disaster. A few Republicans are complicit but Fannie and Freddie were created by Democrats, regulated by Democrats, largely run by Democrats and protected by Democrats. That's why taxpayers are now being asked for $700 billion!!

1997 - 1999: Clinton, bypassing Republicans, enlisted Andrew Cuomo, then Secretary of Housing and Urban Developement, allowing Freddie and Fannie to get into the sub-prime market in a BIG way. Led by Rep. Barney Frank and Sen. Chris Dodd, congress doubled down on the risk by easing capital limits and allowing them to hold just 2.5% of capital to back their investments vs. 10% for banks. Since they could borrow at lower rates than banks their enterprises boomed.

With incentives in place, banks poured billions in loans into poor communities, often "no doc", "no income", requiring no money down and no verification of income. Worse still was the cronyism: Fannie and Freddie became home to out-of work-politicians, mostly Clinton Democrats. 384 politicians got big campaign donations from Fannie and Freddie. Over $200 million had been spent on lobbying and political activities. During the 1990's Fannie and Freddie enjoyed a subsidy of as musch as $182 Billion, most of it going to principals and shareholders, not poor borrowers as claimed.

Did it work? Minorities made up 49% of the 12.5 million new homeowners but many of those loans have gone bad and the minority homeownership rates are shrinking fast.

1999: New Treasury Secretary, Lawrence Summers, became alarmed at Fannie and Freddie's excesses. Congress held hearings the ensuing year but nothing was done because Fannie and Freddie had donated millions to key congressmen and radical groups, ensuring no meaningful changes would take place. "We manage our political risk with the same intensity that we manage our credit and interest rate risks," Fannie CEO Franklin Raines, a former Clinton official and current Barack Obama advisor, bragged to investors in 1999.

1977: Pres. Jimmy Carter signs the Community Reinvestment Act into Law. The law pressured financial institutions to extend home loans to those who would otherwise not qualify. The Premise: Home ownership would improve poor and crime-ridden communities and neighborhoods in terms of crime, investment, jobs, etc.

Results: Statistics bear out that it did not help.

How did the government get so deeply involved in the housing market? Answer: Bill Clinton wanted it that way.

1992: Republican representative Jim Leach (IO) warned of the danger that Fannie and Freddie were changing from being agencies of the public at large to money machines for the principals and the stockholding few.

1993: Clinton extensively rewrote Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's rules turning the quasi-private mortgage-funding firms into semi-nationalized monopoies dispensing cash and loans to large Democratic voting blocks and handing favors, jobs and contributions to political allies. This potent mix led inevitably to corruption and now the collapse of Freddie and Fannie.

1994: Despite warnings, Clinton unveiled his National Home-Ownership Strategy which broadened the CRA in ways congress never intended.

1995: Congress, about to change from a Democrat majority to Republican, Clinton orders Robert Rubin's Treasury Dept to rewrite the rules. Robt. Rubin's Treasury reworked rules, forcing banks to satisfy quotas for sub-prime and minority loans to get a satisfactory CRA rating. The rating was key to expansion or mergers for banks. Loans began to be made on the basis of race and little else.

I wonder why the hell you think anybody in their right mind would vote for a very very old out of touch man, and a very very stupid person to be President? Why on earth would anybody want more of the same? Why on earth would I vote for people SO DEPSERATE to hang onto the white house they are stooping down to the lowest levels they can to connect Obama to anything scandalous? Why on earth would I vote for a couple of hyprocrites? Family values - McCain left his ailing first wife for his ciurrent wife. Palins kid is knocked up. Husband belonged to a party that wanted Alaska to secede from the rest of the U.S., McCains wife is a recovering drug addict. If any of these things applied to Obama he woudln't have even made it through the primaries.

John McCain is desperate. He was desperate when he selected Sarah Palin. He was desperate when he suspended his campaign when he supposedly hammered out the winning bailout proposition, and he is desperate enough now to lie, smear and slander his way into the White House.

John McCain is no perfect man. He is for many reasons a horrible man. He has been a troublemaker his entire life - documented in accounts from his younger years in prep school to his "legend" acceptance at the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated far from honorably and was assigned to flight duty even though he was not qualified. He crashed and/burned five jet fighters at the cost of over 100 sailor's lives. He met and married a woman who would eventually inherit a fortune selling beer . Ties to her father got John McCain political clout - in other words - ties to big money, elected to Congress and later the U.S. Senate. John McCain and his wife had many ties to Charles Keating - the luxury of fabulous vacations to the islands, use of his private jet - all for favors from John McCain and his cronies to avoid regulations that would stop Keating's greedy bank and loan practices. When the savings and loan failed 21,000 elderly retirees lost their life savings. The bailout from the U.S. government - the U.S. taxpayers - was in the billions. Basically the same kind of situation we are experiencing right now with Wall Street and all the institutions that made bad loan decisions. All the Senate Ethics Committe did was reprimand McCain - a slap on the wrist for his involvement. John McCain is not for this country - he is an arrogant, egotistical, manipulative, dirty, lying old man.

Sarah Palin has no reason to ridicule Barack Obama for a charitiable working relationship - or say anything about the Obama family's relationship with their former pastor. Barack Obama was a young boy (eight years old) at the time these bombings took place. Barack Obama certainly never knew the activist, William Ayers during the 1960's. By the time they met they were both professors -at two of the best universities in the state of Illinois. The rich family's foundation, for which they were acquainted, also had ties with John and Cindy McCain. The whole world knows about the strange happenings at Sarah Palin's church - stating Israel would be attacked because they are not Christians, stating the war in Iraq is God's will, and we've all seen the laying of hands over Sarah Palin and the African pastor casting witches and demons from her body while praising God for political power, money and other glory for her. This is far from mainstream religion - it verges on cult-like activities.

John McCain and Sarah Palin should be questioned and make public statements regarding the recent racist remarks about Barack Obama. They owe him, his family (including the girls) and his staff an apology. That sheriff spouting hatred remarks ( while wearing a uniform and saluting) should be fired. It's been reported he is being investigated for wrongdoing. Anyone, including McCain and Palin, should be held responsible and charged if any of this is true.

Obama's followers are doing what they do best... creating voters where there aren't any. Take a look into the front page of MSNBC... ten states are looking into a scandal of voter registration. This is the exact kind of tactics that ACORN and Ayers use in order to get what they want. Obama is the voice they are using in order to gain the power that they want.

Obama can't even prove that he was born in the United States. There is a lawsuit going now to force him to prove it by providing his birth certificate... like John McCain had to do. But for some reason it doesn't seem that Obama is being held to the same measure that McCain is. Wasn't he a constitution lawyer? Shouldn't he know that being born outside of the United States makes it illegal for him to be President of the United States.

Why aren't these questions being asked by the media? Why isn't the media putting Obama under any sort of scrutiny? Seems that they are doing everything that they possibly can to get this man elected. Just look at this Romano kids articles. He has never once done any research into Obama... but he talks about him as if he is the next coming of the Messiah.

Why is the American public voting for a Senator who doesn't even vote on bills. He just gives a "present" vote. How can you support someone who doesn't stand for anything.

John McCain is pathetic! All of his efforts to destroy Obama's character, judgement, policies, etc. is going to backfire on him. Not to mention, Sarah Palin will get a taste of her own medicine too because she is right in the mix. Has anyone noticed that ALL of the tactics that McCain/Palin are trying have backfired thus far? They are inciting fear, anger and violence during these rallies and I don't think that is fair to the rest of us as decent Americans. It one thing to go negative, but it is quite another to stir up bad behavior in people and promote it. Not once has he addressed this issue and he should. What kind of leader promotes anger and violence and says nothing to end it? Oh, that's right, McCain's other cohort: George W. Bush! Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Once a violent, angry warmonger, always a violent angry warmonger!

Just being born outside the US does not disquaifly someone for president. What if a military family has a child in another country does that mean that child is not American. I want more talk of issues and how they plan on gettin some of this stuff done; instead of all these attacks.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.

I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.

Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years

is terrifying.He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.

The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG

The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing

the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.

McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".

That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.

It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.

Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.

Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy.He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.

No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be

even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.

If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.

When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
