My wife and I have been active supporters of Barack Obama since early 2006 for exactly the reasons illustrated here: He learns the rules, he plays by the rules, he wins by the rules.

Against Hillary Clinton, Obama set up a massive effort to win caucus states. He encouraged the most active and enthusiastic supporters to turn out in droves. By the time Bill and Hillary started crying "foul" over the entire caucus process, Obama had won 15 contests and swept the entire month of February. It was a tidal wave that Hillary could never recover from.

For the general election, which requires a dramatically different strategy (or is it a tactic?), he started by setting up offices during the primaries in every single state. That forced McCain to compete in places where he had never expected (a Republican stump speech in MONTANA?). As the race moved on, Obama could move the volunteers he trained in Oregon and Texas to the new battlegrounds in Virginia and Nevada (and others). Obama began to focus the "ground war" like a laser beam and now we're seeing states like Indiana and Missouri become toss-ups for the first time in a generation. All the while, McCain is playing catch-up. Obama has forced McCain to make a series of huge gambles just to give the appearance that he is still in the race.

Could something go horribly wrong? Of course. But here's the thing: Obama has now spent a year and a half training an army of volunteers to work like something could go horribly wrong. As voter registration deadlines pass, these volunteers will pour through piles of phone numbers and addresses, making sure that the millions of people they registered will now show up to vote. Voting for Obama? Check. McCain? Check. Undecided? Stop by next week and bring cookies.

Because of these volunteers, Obama will dominate in states with early voting. He will benefit from mail-in voting. And on November 4th, he will flood the streets with people who will to drive every single Obama voter to the nearest polling booth.

And, frankly, it's about time we had this kind of efficiency from the Executive branch.

Obama is getting a bump out of this because people are not being reminded of the whole history where the economy is concerned, and who did what when. Call it bias by omission. The media simply says that the economy is Obamas strong issue, but never discusses the facts in detail. Further, who had a majority when is rarely relevant. If the simplistic Party In Power model were true, then the Democrats would not have needed the House Republicans when they tried to pass the bailout bill, as Democrats have the majority in both houses and there is no threat of a veto. In theory, they do not need the Republicans to vote at all. In fact, something like twelve (12) Democrats from Barney Franks own banking committee voted against the bill. Obviously, it is not so simple and the media does the voter a disservice by doing little more than reinforcing the error. A similar argument would be to say that the economy appeared to be doing fine until the Democrats took over control of Congress and the power of the purse, then it tanked. As an aside, the media also misleads regarding the Clinton economy when they fail to mention that it also ended in a recession, requiring the first round of Bush stimulus checks immediately after he took office..

Do Obama and the Democrats deserve a lift in the polls as a result of the financial and mortgage problems? The answer from history is a clear NO. Here's the lead of a New York Times story on September 30, 1999:

"Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending" [link below]. That's 1999 folks. Clinton Administration, I believe.

Here's the lead of a New York Times story on Sept. 11, 2003:

McCain said in co-sponsoring the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190:

"If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole. The Democrats killed the Bill.

What was Barney Frank and fellow Democrats saying at the time of these attempted reforms? According to reports, Representative Barney Frank(D-MA) claimed of the thrifts :

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis, the more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Mel Watt (D-NC) added of the reforms "I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing." There is a great article on the recent head of Fannie Mae being yelled at by Angelo Murillo in 2005 that "you need us more than we need you", because he could place his mortgages on Wall Street.

The Fannie guy is kind of a toady as finance types goes. He figures, allright, if Wall Street can handle all this stuff, with all their quants, then it must not be too risky. And he keeps up volume to try to stay relevant and in his job as CEO.

Were the Fannie/Freddie guys second rate finance wannabes? Sure. If Fannie had blown up, and not the street, then you'd have a case. But the street blew. And for good reason.

I've worked in finance. I've seen the mindset. Very booster-ish, very Republican. Wholistic risk analysis? Nope, not welcome. Back slapping optimism and move along boys. The money is made on doing deals...so deals will be done....

Duh. Its the economy... Remember that little campaign quip. Well, here we go again. There is really not anything substantive about Obama's campaign (sadly McCain, aside from his patriotic duty, brings even less to the table). Let's face it, Obama is simply riding the coat tail of a bad economy and Bush nausea. Obama is not doing anything more strategic or politically cunning than John Kerry. Think about it. Aside from a couple of inspirational speeches there is not much to Senator Obama. Does Barak Obama REALLY bring more to the leadership table than Hillary Clinton? She has accomplished twice as much during her career. Her resume is pages and his is an index card. Barak Obama will probably win this election primarily because of his ethnicity. In this case ethnicity trumped gender.

The partisanship, from both the democratic and republican side, in this country can sometimes be very scary. I support Obama and will vote for him this November, not because he is a democrat, because he supports those things which I find important for this country. That being said, I don't think republicans are evil or vile, I just don't agree with McCain's proposals and his plan for the country. I find the new line of attack from the McCain campaign to be more of a turn-off than anything. Obama's supposed connection with Ayers, which he has time and again denounced, is fanciful and clearly, at least to me, an attempt to smear Obama and instill fear in the undecided voters mind. I haven't seen a single ad from Obama, the maybe some I just haven't seen them on tv, that attacks McCain's character.

Why are we still having to listen to all the crap about racism when Obama is doing so much better than Kerry (a white guy) did? Obviously, even in a perfect world where racism doesn't exist, no one - regardless of color- is going to win over everyone. Obama is now leading by a larger percentage than Bush won with against a fellow white guy. Why do people keep claiming racism is playing some unknown role rather than admitting that this country has come so far in race relations that a black man can actually win a larger percentage of votes (white, black, Dems, Republicans) than a white man did just a few years ago and could possibly be the next POTUS. If he doesn't, it's not because he's black, it's because many don't agree with his policies and vision for the future of the United States. Give us some credit and stop the hate mongering.

FACINGREALITY SAYS: I agree with you! I am so tired of hearing about race because it is beginning to sound like the media has consistently tried to push the issue more than the campaigns.. Like you stated, Obama is doing better than the average white and white candidate, has increased the participation of the youth and registration and yet the MSM still wants to bring up the race issue, like it is the elephant in the room - more to me like they are trying to prevent a legitimate win by Obama - grasping for straws, instead of giving the man credit for running the absolute BEST CAMPAIGN in the HISTORY of POLITICS. I am still somewhat taken aback at the level of fear and ignorance concerning Obama. It is amazing at what some will chose to believe even when there is irrefutable evidence to the contrary. There is no evidence to even remotely suggest Obama embraces or has ever practiced Marxism. I question if the people who bring up the Marxist statements really know of what they speak. There is no evidence to even remotely suggest Obama is a Muslim radical or even Muslim. If you wish to go on a picture of him in Muslim attire then you could make the same argument about an American female in the Middle East who has to dress in Muslim attire because of the law.

You could make the same argument about Sociologist who study other cultures by immersing themselves into the culture to include the attire. So a Sociologist who is studying the Muslim culture is a Muslim simply because he wears the attire, is that not judging a book by its cover? There is no evidence to remotely suggest that Obama swore in on the Koran, with Vice President Chaney standing there, he supports McCain so logic suggest he would have said something if this rumor were true.

The fact of the matter is this, the Republicans want to stay in power so bad, they will say anything, do anything and take any risk. John McCain promised he would not get into the fear and smear, John McCain promised he would run on the issues because that is what the American people demand. His own campaign manager said this election would not be about the issues, one of his advisors said if they discuss the issues they lose.

We now have all these fear and smear posters out there. They have no facts, they have no plausible arguments. They will not debate the issues with you and when you are right they throw insults at you. When the media find McCain or Palin in a lie the media is accused of being bias, yet if Obama is caught in a lie they are happy as hell. When McCain runs personal attack ads then everything is all good but when Obama runs negative ads concerning the issues they get all upset and accuse Obama of being nasty.

These people do not see the contradiction in their arguments, they do not see the hypocrisy in their arguments and I am almost sure that one or more will tell me what I can go do with myself for taking them to task. I have news for them, I am not thin skinned, I have had bigger and meaner mad at me so say what you will, I will just consider the source and move on.

In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future.

I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.

Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years

is terrifying.He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.

The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG

The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing

the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything in the last 80 years.

McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".

That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.

It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.

Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.

Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy.He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.

No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He didnt realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be

even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.

If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.

When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.

So why are the polls even close then ?

Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama

which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.

They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it

Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
