A working assumption among political junkies is that no one can predict what will happen when the country closes the voting-booth curtains on Nov. 4 and is finally forced to decide, for the first time

re: Will Race Matter?

As someone who mixes with all types of people and understand race dynamics, some people will vote for Obama because he has impressed them. Some will be impressed but will NOT vote for him because he is black. Some will say they will not vote for him but will do so in hiding. This is just the fact of life.

What is important to note is that Obama has touched many people in different ways. He is respected and admired by people of all races. Some whites are upset that because of his race other whites will not vote for him. These whites become very intense and will vote in his favor. Some blacks will not vote for Obama because they see him as different from them. (There is a certain element of jealousy there too). Many blacks who would not have voted for Jesse Jackson will vote for Obama because they are comfortable with his approach. They are also very proud of how he has portrayed himselves.

The final deal is that he will get voted for by many people of all races, not because of his blackness, but because they admire what he has achieved despite he is a black person. There are many white folks in America who want to see a black person succeed. They are passionate about it. This number is increasing rapidly.

The main reason for this is that people are seeing Obama as a PERSON who can put America on its feet again as well as help to bridge the gap between races.

I'm sure if someone went into a black majority and asked why they are voting for Obama, the response would not be based on executive experience, strong knowledge of foreign affairs or how much legislature he has created in the senate. The issue that should be strong is the minds of Americans is that Obama is dangerous. The only way to see Obama is to view him in the light of day. Your parents tell you to behave and stay clear of trouble. That is what Obama has not learned. He says so himself. Obama looks for radical political positions, disenchanted poeple, and has grown a tolerance for anti- American positions. Now this does not mean he is not American. This should just reinforce the fact that he is not fit to be president.

THEY, THEMSELVES, ARE ACTUALLY BECOMING THE RADICALS

And for the old republican on TV at a McCain/Palin (so called) rally in Wisconsin who said he was mad yesterday, we are mad too.

WE ARE MAD AS HELL AT WHAT THIS ADMINISTRATION AND THE REPUBLICANS HAVE DONE TO THIS COUNTRY IN THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.

And, again, to the guy in Wisconsin, (and I hope you are reading this) it was very apparent what you actually said.

You said WE ARE ACTUALLY IN DANGER OF A BLACK MAN WINNING THIS ELECTION AND BECOMING PRESIDENT.

I am a member of this clowns generation, but I most certainly DO NOT share his views and hatred.

I really hope lots of young people join the rest of us in voting this time because they are largely unbiased and unaffected by this culture of racism from the past. They represent the future.

It is time to end this in America and put all of this garbage behind us. And, as is evident in these recent McCain/Palin rallies, there are two candidates in this campaign who will work to make that happen.

Obama/Biden

If they did not vote for Joe Biden in the primary does that mean they are anti-Catholic? If anyone, for whatever reason, raises a legitimate criticism of Obama they are immediately branded a racist. Does that show we have come far as a nation??

If a white candidate had the associations Obama had the country would find him repugnant and he wouldn't even get his party's nomination. Every time a decent person has commented on Obama's sitting in a church for twenty years and listening to his pastor spout vile anti American hatred and anti-semitism the person asking how Obama stood by for twenty years and kept silent is branded a racist.

When Hillary and Bill Clinton commented about Obama's associates they were called racists despite the fact that both Clinton's have done more for African Americans than Obama ever has done.

Obama responds to the Ayers association by claiming that he was eight years old when Ayers carried out the bombings in America but Obama fails to mention that on 911, in 2001, Ayers stated he regretted he did not do more bombings.

If John McCain kicked off his campaign at the home of someone who bombed Black church's in the South and declared he regretted he did not do more where do you think the White Liberal media would be in terms of this story?? If McCain sat in a church for twenty years and listened to his pastor slam America and Blacks where do you think the liberal white media would be?

Silent? I think not.

The link below contains a purported list of the top 25 in Congress who got contributions from the folks at Fannie and Freddie. Obama is listed third, after Dodd and Kerry, even though Obama is just a junior Senator. Obama is followed next by Clinton. Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi are on the list as well.

http://www.investors.com/editorial/IBDArticles.asp?artsec=16&artnum=1&issue=20080918

Then there is the Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher J. Dodd who allegedly got special mortgage deals from Countrywide, who gave preferential rates to 'friends' of company's chairman.

"House Financial Services Committee Chair promoted GSEs while former 'spouse' was Fannie Mae executive."

The link below describes how some in Congress tried to use the original version of the bailout bill to divert money eventually recovered to groups like ACORN, a group Obama has a long association with. See:

And then there is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who allegedly has directed nearly $100,000 from her political action committee to her husband's real estate and investment firm.

McCain and Palin, will be hard pressed to change the concesus against Obama who has opened up his heart to America in two books and over two years of campaigning.

Whatever his influences have been in the past, when someone has received the amount of exposure Obama has received by now, helped by the curiosity factor, and the appeal of something new; when someone has received that amount of exposure, it is difficult to convince people that they don't know someone better than what others say about him. This is what McCain and his croneys have failed to realise.

You are worse than a racist because those things you noted in your post are not true. You have stated a response full of ignorance AND bigotry. You're misinformed about his vote on abortion. You're wrong about him not putting his hand over his heart (they were singing the national anthem - go to a baseball game and you will see only about half the people will have their hand over their heart. You put your hand over your heart during the pledge of allegiance). You completely misunderstood his answer on when life begins - he was stating that he doesn't play God (like too many right wingers do). He has been a Christian and attending a Christian church for decades, his children are baptized Christian. And, no one has proven that he listened to Reverend Wright spew hate FOR 20 YEARS. There is one instance of Wright's sermon and no one has proven that Obama was there listening to it. So all of your reasons to reject Obama are based on lies and ignorance and are totally hypocritical if you would take the time, honor this great nation and become and informed voter. You haven't even taken the time to examine McCains associations, which are by far corrupt and very questionable. If you boil it down, your reasons have nothing to do with him being qualified. So who is ignorant?

There would be a problem if the *only* reason you were voting for Barack was because he was black. But because he's half African, he brings new perspectives into the highest office of the land, a new way of seeing. Because he's a man of colour, he's had experiences that the white hegemony can't relate to. Definitely, I am voting for Barack *in part* because he's black.

What you stated is what every racist says "I vote for a black man but..." "Some of my best friends are black (I just can't remember their names" "This is a good place to raise children (no minorities)" I believe that John McCain forgot his flag pin at the first debate and maybe his second. You say Obama did not hold his hand over his heart during the national anthem. Since it was a picture and not a video, I could answer that the anthem was over and he put his hand down before the others. I don't know but it is a stupid reason to think he is anti-American. About lies, John McCain stated in his book that he has lied to get political points. He accuses Obama of being ambitous but states in his book the only reason he wanted to run for president in 2000 was not for ideology, not for the country but for his own ambition. Read his own words. Now he is trying to use words like terrorist and Obama together. His Fox friends confuse his name with Osama (on and accident - wink wink). Or they use his middle name of Hussein (terrorist - wink wink). By the way, King Hussein of Jordan is one of the most popular allies in the Middle East to the Americans. But Fox won't tell you that. By their stupid logic John McCain is a serial murderer because he has the same name as John Wayne Gacy. How assinine would it be to put an ad on TV with John McCain and John Wayne Gacy together and say "is there a connection?" About Obama's association with Ayers. Ayers was a 60's radical who never killed anyone. His actions have been condemned by Obama. He performed theses acts when Obama was 8. I don't think he called up 8-year-old Barack and asked him how to bomb targets. Ayers is now a higher respected professor at the University of Chicago and has been named Man of the year. Do you believe that a man can change? McCain has been tied to anti-Semetic groups and Neo-nazis. Now he may not have known about these people's view when he was "paling around" with them but do we call him n anti-semite or neo-nazi and judge him like that. You need to get your fact right and read a little.

Fine We all agree on that. My question to you is "what the hell gives you the right to call me racist when I simply say I dont agree with his platform. For Obama to implement $800B in New spending programs and also give 95% of us reduced income tax can not happen without an increase in the national debt , which he says he will not do. He just can't do what he says he is going to do. Soooo you tell me what the hell make me a racist"

Obama/Biden

AND NOW, (10/10) MCCAIN'S NOCOLE WALLACE IS TRYING TO DEFEND THIS BEHAVIOR SAYING OBAMA IS ATTACKING MCCAIN SUPPORTERS!

BAZAAR OR WHAT? ... I THINK MCCAIN HAS REALLY LOST IT..

You cannot sit here and say I don't like Obama because of who he associates with when McCain has equally questionable and offensive associates. It's hypocritical and you're masking your distaste/racism for/against Obama with lies and falsehoods. You're in denial.

If you can state the factual differences between the candidates as reasoning for your support of McCain, then you have a much more valid stance.

Period. Man can do and say whatever he chooses but God has the last say.

As for the alledged ACORN so called "voter fraud," let's wait to see how that whole thing plays out. My guess? It was a set up by the Republican Party. I'm not saying that there weren't instances of people scamming the process, but it doesn't make sense to me that dozens and dozens of people all over the country are allowing individuals to turn in obviously fraudulant registration forms. I've registered dozens of people myself and I cannot imagine that type of behavior not being caught and corrected.

I've seen some Republican dirty tricks in my 59 years of life, but never to the degree that John McCain and Sarah Palin has taken this election. Their crowds are beginning to sound like KKK rallies. If someone messes around and gets hurt as a result of one of those rallies, John McCain and Sarah Palin should be charged with inciting a riot. Any other human being who stood up before angry crowds and shouting "traitor" and "kill him" --about a national presidential candidate no less--would already be hailed off to jail.

Let's get real folks. Our country cannot take four more years of what we've experienced the past eight. It's been much too painful. Financially. Emotionally. Watching the United States of America go from being the most revered country on the face of the earth, to one of the least respected is one of so many reasons why Barack said, "Enough." Ditto.

I want my children to know the country that provided me with opportunities. Yes, as an African American woman who grew up in the 60's, I know racism better than most. But I refused to let it stop me.

I grew up reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag every morning at the beginning of the school day. I'm one of those people who got goose bumps when The U.S. hockey team defeated the "mighty Russians." I've marched and fought for civil rights and had to explain to our sons why they have to behave a certain way when stopped by police...and on and on..

I said all that to say this...WE NEED A CHANGE. Barack Obama is the one who can lead us through these tough economic times. He has the intelligence and is not intimidated by surrounding himself with others who possess more knowledge in certain areas. That's a leader. With Barack Obama's and hard work we can make America's promise of hope and opportunity for everyone a reality.

The only thing they do well is turn race relations back about 50 years. Palin's shown herself to be a disgusting, polarizing figure that the lunatics who comprise the extreme right can rally around. I can't believe in this day and age idiots like that still exist. These Republican rallies look like clan meetings.

I believe this will damage America and therfore I AM DEAD AGAINST Obama for political reasons .

I understand how those people venting to John McCain feel, I do. It is a depressing thought that someone like Barrack Obama can stir so many zealots to the socialism crusade. I do agree this has nothing to do with Obama being half/half or black or mulato, his color is irrelevant. The danger with Obama is that his ideas and naivete will destroy America. We are in a precarious position and time, we are at a low where anything can happen. We need someone with integrity and an honest approach to bring America back. That person will not and can not be Barrack Hussein Obama. Look at his record. America needs a change, not just another Chicago politician with blind ambition and a socialist/marxist agenda. Look at his record. It will not take long to decide if everyone knew who Obama really is. Please, look at his record.
As for you jasminearmstead and your comments about God moving thoughout this campaign. I think you are dead wrong on this. You need to reread Revelation, maybe we are starting the process that leads to the seven years prior to the 1000 year reign of Christ. If it is there is nothing that any of us can do to stop that either.

Sorry to say, the mavrick has never won a war. The Americans had to run from Vietnam and it will be the same in Iraq. Stop the war mongering and try to live peacefully with all races and persons in the world regardless of their colour, faith and creed.

He is in reality following the ways of Bush and especially Dick Cheney. It's no joke that we as a people can never afford another 4 years of the same. I would say to everyone out there that we need NEW. Obama while he's not too experienced is the best person for the job. I was a Clinton supporter. If I have learned anything about politics, it must be government of the people, for the people and by the PEOPLE. I do not feel McCain and especially Palin are the right choice. Experience tells me this.

I lived in Kenya. His father was from Kenya. Kenya is near the equator in east Africa. Roughly 10 or so degrees south, on the Indian Ocean, between Somalia and Tanzania.

His Mother was an American. He is as African American as anyone could possibly be.

Race should only matter if a candidate is ACTUALLY that race. This one isn't.

He is Middle Eastern, not African or Afro-American.

You also seem to use the idiom "This one." as if you can not call him a man. Do you really have that much hate? Have you really been scared that badly by the right wing machine? Is bigotry all that is left of the Republican agenda? You state that race should matter. That is frankly un-American. Let me provide you some supreme law.

After our Civil War, or what I still refer to as the war of Northern Agression, we passed 3 Amendments to our constitution. The 13th Amendment freed the slaves. The 14th made them citizens, and The 15th granted them the vote. (Even though the disgusting behavior in the south of Jim Crow laws kept this from being enacted for over 100 years.)

I am sorry that you do not know this. I am sorry that you are so full of hate that you can not tell the truth. I am sorry that you hate our laws and constitution so much as to defy them.

Please stay a Republican. I will pray for you. I will pray that no one like you harms Mr. Obama, as killing people is far too common in our society.

I am a Southerner who is ashamed of you.

First, "middle eastern" is not a race; however, 'having origins in the Middle East' is part of the definition of 'white.' So, by your inaccurate statement that Obama is middle eastern, you're actually saying that he is white.

Obama is bi-racial, but his mother was from one of the Plains States -- Kansas. As the offspring of a white American woman and a black African man. If anyone is African-American, Obama surely is.

I'm amazed how uninformed so many people are, and these are people who vote. Elle2, you really should consider relinquishing your voting rights.

1. It's been determined that Palin engaged in an abuse of power in the "Trooper Gate" matter involving the trooper formerly married to her sister. In addition, her husband has way too much access to the professional aspects of the governor's office. Palin's husband made personal visits to the public safety director who wouldn't fire Palin's brother-in-law.

2. McCain was still legally married to his first wife at the time he and Cindy (a recovering addict - there's no such thing as a 'former addict' you know) filed for their marriage license. An application for a marriage license generally contains a space to describe "how the previous marriage ended" and unless that box was left blank, McCain outright lied. Also, adultery violates the Code of Conduct for military.

Both examples speak to the character and integrity of both Palin and her spouse, and McCain and his spouse.

re: Will Race Matter?

This is a fascinating article...and it is also fascinating to see how the American are wrestling with the issue of race in this election.

First, the obvious: (1) not everyone who votes for John McCain is a bigot...most are not; and (2) Blacks have overwhelmingly voted Democratic for decades so the idea that they are voting for Barack Obama simply because he is Black doesn't totally wash either. I don't think you would see large numbers of Blacks voting for Alan Keyes (or any other prominent Black conservative), for example. The didn't vote for him when he ran for the U.S. Senate and lost in Illinois and Maryland.

I have worked with many Whites (many of them Republicans and conservatives) before I retired from the Federal Aviation Administration and I learned that there are very few card-carrying bigots anymore. With the U.S. economy going south in a big way and John McCain's campaign falling apart and descending into the gutter, I would not be surprised to see many of the people that I knew from my job voting for Barack Obama and that may be the first time that they voted for a Democrat since JFK. And yes, they might not admit that they are going to do so.

You many also see this effect from some of the so-called PUMAs that supported Hillary Clinton and said that they would refuse to support Barack Obama. Some of them might not want to admit publicly that they did so,

This article suggests that the conventional wisdom about race in this country is about to be turned upside down...and I think that that would be a good thing, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I presume you're suggesting that my comments about Trooper Gate and McCain's adulterous behavior were "lame." For the record, I have voted Republican since 1980, so I didn't vote for Clinton. Clinton, too, is to be blamed for his infidelity. If someone lies to the person he/she claims to love, what's to prevent that person from lying to people he/she doesn't even know personally, as in constituents? My comments about Palin and McCain are non-partisan -- anyone who cheats and lies about some things, will likely cheat and lie about other things, even monumental issues.

To set the record straight, I am not a Clinton supporter and never have been. My comments had more to do with character and integrity, but you unfortunately missed the point.

It's impossible to have an intelligent debate without name-calling, or resorting to hurling insults, and making racist or condescending remarks. in addition to the intentional misspelling of candidates' names in an attempt to demean others. By registering on this site, I thought Newsweek would support spirited conversation and debate -- not comments from readers who are incapable of demonstrating decorum, mutual respect and class. I was wrong.

FROM CONSERVATIVE COLUMIST:

"McCAIN'S ATTACKS FUEL DANGEROUS HATRED"

By Frank Schaeffer

October 10, 2008

To John McCain:

If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.

At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, "Kill him!" At one of your rallies, someone called out, "Terrorist!" Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee - an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman.

Shame!

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

John McCain, you are no fool, and you understand the depths of hatred that surround the issue of race in this country. You also know that, post-9/11, to call someone a friend of a terrorist is a very serious matter. You also know we are a bitterly divided country on many other issues. You know that, sadly, in America, violence is always just a moment away. You know that there are plenty of crazy people out there.

Stop! Think! Your rallies are beginning to look, sound, feel and smell like lynch mobs.

John McCain, you're walking a perilous line. If you do not stand up for all that is good in America and declare that Senator Obama is a patriot, fit for office, and denounce your hate-filled supporters when they scream out "Terrorist" or "Kill him," history will hold you responsible for all that follows.

John McCain and Sarah Palin, you are playing with fire, and you know it. You are unleashing the monster of American hatred and prejudice, to the peril of all of us. You are doing this in wartime. You are doing this as our economy collapses. You are doing this in a country with a history of assassinations.

Change the atmosphere of your campaign. Talk about the issues at hand. Make your case. But stop stirring up the lunatic fringe of haters, or risk suffering the judgment of history and the loathing of the American people - forever.

We will hold you responsible.

Frank Schaeffer is the author of "Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back." His e-mail is frankaschaeffer@aol.com

The republicans that follow McCain yell "socialist" and "kill him" to a presdential candidate is appalling. Keep in mind, the only "socialist" I see is the one currently holding the oval office. It is the current republican president asking the Gov't 700 billion dollars. McCain shortly follows with the notion of gov't buying bad mortgages. Who really has socialist ideas?? It's bigotry and racism that blinds people from seeing the truth. Additionally, all McCain/Palin is focusing on is association and accusations against Obama. Please tell me they have more substance than this.

Additonally, I have a hard time understanding why so many Christians associate with the republican party. As a strong Christian myself, I see no Christ like values in republican candidates. Is war mongering based on a LIE Christ like? Is it even in our country's best interest to spend billions of dollars daily fighting in Iraq based on a LIE? Is greed, corruption, trickle down economics that only serves the rich Christ like? For me, the pick of Palin was the ultimate stab in the back. Her daughter being pregnant at age of 17. What kind of values and morals is Palin truly representing? It's ok the have sex and get pregnant, just don't get an abortion??? The hypocrisy is frightning and almost demonic. What really bothers me is the Right wing evangelicals praising Palin. It really shows they are a political movement more than a movement for Christ.

I'll be voting democrat this year simply because I don't see any substantial change in message given by McCain/Palin on what they are going to do about the economy, foreign policy that is no different from what it is now. They should know focusing on attacking the opponent vs substance will get them nowhere unless they are targeting the uneducated voters of America. I'm truly disgusted with the republican party, their tactics, and hypocrisy. Hopefully in the future, there will be a viable 3rd party candidate.

Also folks, blind patriotism is the worst ignorance of all. Supporting and unjust Iraq war is un-American. You forget our founding fathers were considered "traitors" for speaking out for what they believed in. Critical thinking is needed not just blindly accepting and believing that the Iraq war was right course of action. Mark my words, we will not win the Iraq war just like we didn't in Vietnam or Korea. Another example is Russia's war with Afghanistan,. A war fighting an ideology (communism, terrorism) has no ends. It will always exist as it is an ideology, a belief. besides the fact we shouldn't be there in the first place.

I'm ashamed to say that in this country, most people vote based on practically NO KNOWLEDGE at all. They don't read, they don't really know anything about the issues facing the country, they don't sit and discuss politics in a civil manner (unless it's with those who agree with them) and they listen to "spin". They vote along strict party lines, assuming that one party or the other is somehow "right". They vote based on one or two knee-jerk issues that they think they understand, like some nebulous "support for the troops" or wanting to have the ability to deny an abortion to people they will never know, supposedly to enforce the "right to life" of babies whom they will not spend a penny to support, babies who ultimately will probably become the poor people whom these same voters don't want to help in any way. Too many voters in the U.S. are some of the stupidest, most willfully unintelligent people (like CHOMPERS) on the planet, who simply either refuse to think more than the most shallow thoughts, or else are incapable of it. They would be surprised at what our Founding Fathers really thought, based on their writings - but they won't take the time to read or understand more than a few snippets that have been carefully selected and spoon-fed to them by their party's pundits or talk show hosts. These voters continually vote against their own best interests because they refuse to carefully watch and hold accountable the people whom they have elected, somehow assuming that they're doing the right thing. In a more civilized country, people who understand so little and who refuse to educate themselves would not have the nerve to vote. They would leave the voting to others who had done their homework.

Right now we have two parties who basically fight back and forth for power. Neither party is going to help the average voter, but one party clearly exists to promote the rights of the wealthy. If you take a look at history, it's obvious. It's also obvious that the other party needs a coherent strategy. It's sad, really.

I suggest that, if our country's voters had always been more educated in the real issues, we would have better quality candidates than the ones we tend to have now - people more like our Founding Fathers. And we'd have a better country than the one we have now, too - a country that was financially secure. Maybe we'd have more than basically just two parties to choose from. Voters in this country need to wise up, get educated, and learn to see through the spin.

If you can't do that now, do all of us a favor and don't vote.

If Obama wins the election, and he probably will, I'll be joining the "AK Secession Party". The notion that our government will be absolutely dominated by the extreme radical Left is frightening. The lack of checks & balances will leave us at the mercy of a power-drunk radical Left-Wing government, that will ironically destroy the Constitution and the very civil liberties it claims to protect - America will never be the same. 8 years of Bush were bad to say the least, and what is coming Jan 09 will be historical far worse. We want Obama style change? We will get more than what we bargained for, mark my words. Socialism doesn't even begin to describe the definition of what this new, radical unchecked Left-Wing government can be called. It's going to be a twisted hybrid of Socialism / Fascism ideologies, with government oppression of likes in which we haven't seen since the British ruled the 13 Colonies. Talk about living in a total police-state, are you truly prepared to give up your personal freedom? Bush may have dug America's grave, but it will be the radical Left under Obama who hammers the final nail into the coffin. Kiss your freedom and sovereignty good-by. If we really want "change" and real solutions, how about voting for someone who actually follows the Constitution - Ron Paul.

>>Republican voters I hope you know that there are so many smart & capable republicans you could have selected, instead you chose Bush (dumb), McCain (dumber) Palin (dumbest, EVIL & street smart).

>>Let alone Americans the World is laughing at you on how stupid you are in electing Bush not once but twice, then picking McCain the GAMBLER, EROTIC & DANGEROUS man, and if that was not enough McCain had to top it with the "street smart/clueless/EVIL/barracuda" Palin.

HYMAN: Obama's Kenya ghostsAbout 50 parishioners were locked into the Assemblies of God church before it was set ablaze. They were mostly women and children. Those who tried to flee were hacked to death by machete-wielding members of a mob numbering 2,000.

The 2008 New Year Day atrocity in the Kenyan village Eldoret, about 185 miles northwest of Nairobi, had all the markings of the Rwanda genocide of a decade earlier.

By mid-February 2008, more than 1,500 Kenyans were killed. Many were slain by machete-armed attackers. More than 500,000 were displaced by the religious strife. Villages lay in ruin. Many of the atrocities were perpetrated by Muslims against Christians.

The violence was led by supporters of Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who lost the Dec. 27, 2007, presidential election by more than 230,000 votes. Odinga supporters began the genocide hours after the final election results were announced Dec. 30. Mr. Odinga was a member of Parliament representing an area in western Kenya, heavily populated by the Luo tribe, and the birthplace of Barack Obama's father.

Mr. Odinga had the backing of Kenya's Muslim community heading into the election. For months he denied any ties to Muslim leaders, but fell silent when Sheik Abdullahi Abdi, chairman of the National Muslim Leaders Forum, appeared on Kenya television displaying a memorandum of understanding signed on Aug. 29, 2007, by Mr. Odinga and the Muslim leader. Mr. Odinga then denied his denials.

The details of the MOU were shocking. In return for Muslim backing, Mr. Odinga promised to impose a number of measures favored by Muslims if he were elected president. Among these were recognition of "Islam as the only true religion," Islamic leaders would have an "oversight role to monitor activities of ALL other religions [emphasis in original]," installation of Shariah courts in every jurisdiction, a ban on Christian preaching, replacement of the police commissioner who "allowed himself to be used by heathens and Zionists," adoption of a women's dress code, and bans on alcohol and pork.

This was not Mr. Odinga's first brush with notoriety. Like his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the main opposition leader in the 1960s and 1970s, Raila Odinga is a Marxist He graduated from East Germany's Magdeburg University in 1970 on a scholarship provided by the East German government. He named his oldest son after Fidel Castro.

Raila Odinga was implicated in the bloody coup attempt in 1982 against then-President Daniel Arap Moi, a close ally of the United States. Kenya has been one of the most stable democracies in Africa since the 1960s. The ethnic cleansing earlier this year was the worst violence in Kenya since that 1982 coup attempt.

Mr. Odinga spent eight years in prison. At the time, he denied guilt but later detailed he was a coup leader in his 2006 biography. Statue of limitations precluded further prosecution when the biography appeared.

Initially, Mr. Odinga was not the favored opposition candidate to stand in the 2007 election against President Mwai Kibaki, who was seeking his second term. However, he received a tremendous boost when Sen. Barack Obama arrived in Kenya in August 2006 to campaign on his behalf. Mr. Obama denies that supporting Mr. Odinga was the intention of his trip, but his actions and local media reports tell otherwise.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama were nearly inseparable throughout Mr. Obama's six-day stay. The two traveled together throughout Kenya and Mr. Obama spoke on behalf of Mr. Odinga at numerous rallies. In contrast, Mr. Obama had only criticism for Kibaki. He lashed out against the Kenyan government shortly after meeting with the president on Aug. 25. "The [Kenyan] people have to suffer over corruption perpetrated by government officials," Mr. Obama announced.

"Kenyans are now yearning for change," he declared. The intent of Mr. Obama's remarks and actions was transparent to Kenyans - he was firmly behind Mr. Odinga.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama had met several times before the 2006 trip. Reports indicate Mr. Odinga visited Mr. Obama during trips to the U.S. in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Mr. Obama sent his foreign policy adviser Mark Lippert to Kenya in early 2006 to coordinate his summer visit. Mr. Obama's August trip coincided with strategizing by Orange Democratic Movement leaders to defeat Mr. Kibaki in the upcoming elections. Mr. Odinga represented the ODM ticket in the presidential race.

Mr. Odinga and Mr. Obama's father were both from the Luo community, the second-largest tribe in Kenya, but their ties run much deeper. Mr. Odinga told a stunned BBC Radio interviewer the reason why he and Mr. Obama were staying in near daily telephone contact was because they were cousins. In a Jan. 8, 2008, interview, Mr. Odinga said Mr. Obama had called him twice the day before while campaigning in the New Hampshire primary before adding, "Barack Obama's father is my maternal uncle."

President Kibaki requested a meeting of all opposition leaders in early January in an effort to quell the violence. All agreed to attend except Mr. Odinga. A month later, Mr. Kibaki offered Mr. Odinga the role of prime minister, the de facto No. 2 in the Kenyan government, in return for an end to the attacks. Mr. Odinga was sworn in on April 17, 2008.

Mr. Obama's judgment is seriously called into question when he backs an official with troubling ties to Muslim extremists and whose supporters practice ethnic cleansing and genocide. It was Islamic extremists in Kenya who bombed the U.S. Embassy in 1998, killing more than 200 and injuring thousands. None of this has dissuaded Mr. Obama from maintaining disturbing loyalties.

Add to this, the failure of pollsters to contact sufficient samples for the minorities could accound for Obama outperforming poll results. Of specific concern, is the FACT that it is entirely reasonable for Obama to be "friendly" to a rehabilitated Ayers who is so widely respected and accepted in the Chicago community, without having to IGNORE him because of political angst.

Ayers remains coy by allowing his name to be smeared with this repeated attempt to "distract" people from real issues. How many people does Obama know? How can we say with impunity that his "pals" are the few radical names that we continue to discuss? How many people does John McCain know, and which of them would also be considered radicals? Gordon Liddy? Oliver North? Keating? (with whom his wife and father-in-law continued to do business though 2003), Rick Davis, lobbyist serving self-interest and still getting paid by Fannie Mae until August of this year? What about the lobbyist to Georgia (Shannenum, sp) who HAPPENED to be connected to the McCain's campaign who encourged Georgia to provoke Russia, we'll help you?

What about Sarah's negatives, abusing power? having husband reimbursed for state trips? allowing husband to attend state business meetings when he was and is not a state employee? Leaving Wasilla 22 Million in debt because of poor management? Firing qualified employees and hiring friends?

While the McCain campaign has turned the microscope on Obama and his few "known" bad actors who he has refuted, denounced, and denigated, they have not been forth coming themselves in clearing up conflict of interest charges about his contacts or 134 lobbyists to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? McCain has associates that are knee deep in these financial crises and questionable militia actions (Iran Contra, Iraq payments and missing funds) - its time for Obama and the Democrats to just do one campaign ad, and run it repeatedly with the listing of his questionable associates - and just close it with , NOT ENOUGH TIME TO DISCUSS IT WITH THE MORTGAGE CRISIS!

How many time can he discuss Ayers? When will the question ever be answered? Ayers was not a terrorist when Obama met him, and is no longer involved in those activities, nor with Obama! When WILL THE ANSWER BE ACCEPTED? If the answer is never, then stop asking questions. The refusal to accept Obama's response proves the LIE of trying to clarify that relationship - and proves that this is merely a campaign tactic to create a negative impression of Obama. Just as FOX is using an old photo of Obama on its newcase web page - obviously younger as his hair is now graying, and there is no lapel pin - which he is now wearing.

If people want to remain negative, there is nothing anybody could do about it!

AJC Strongly Condemns Rev. Jesse Jackson's Comment on American Jews

October 14, 2008 - New York - The American Jewish Committee (AJC) has condemned the Rev. Jesse Jackson's statement about 'Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades.'

"Rev. Jackson's remarks, which appeared in an interview with the journalist Amir Taheri in today's New York Post, echo classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about Jewish power," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. 'This statement, regrettably, is not the first troubling comment by Rev. Jackson regarding Israel, Zionism and the Jewish people.'

Arguing as a private citizen that an Obama administration could bring significant change to U.S. foreign policy, Jackson was quoted as saying that "Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades" would lose much of their influence should Senator Obama be elected president."

Ironically, it appears that liberals are the ones who are always talking about the Bradley effect more than anyone else. I recall a very good friend of mine saying almost two years ago that he liked Obama but "a black guy cannot get elected president of the United States and he won't even get the nomination." I am sure he would be happy to be proven wrong on the first point, but the "Bradley effect" was one of his core arguments on the issue.
