To those of you planning to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket: How could you possibly vote for someone for vice-president who doesn't even understand the responsibilities of the office? It would be nice if each candidate had a basic understanding of the Constitution. Of course, the Bush administration doesn't seem to understand it either. They think it means what they want it to mean. Apparently Governor Palin falls into that same category. Hopefully, in two more weeks she can go back to Alaska never to be heard from again.

Her reply was perfectly pitched at her audience and in no way shows any misunderstanding of the constitution!

Sarah Palin ia an opportunistic, greedy, shady manipulator. She is out for herself in whatever venue she happens to be in at any given time. As Governor of Alaska, she abused her power for her own selfish purposes, billed the state fo Alaska for air fares and hotel bills for her children to accompany her to various events and then manipulated the paperwork so that it would slip through the cracks. The citizens of Alaska don't want her back either.

She has no clue of the job descritpion for VP of the US. She is making things up as she goes along. She is trying to convince herself that she will have more power as VP than the Constitution allows.

The McCain campaign is complaining about not having the money that Obama does because of the public funding issue. What about the thousands and thousands of dollars that have been spent on clothing for Sarah Palin AND her daughters!! Are they running for office too?????

The statement that the clothes will be donated to a charity after the election is an insult to anyone's intelligence. I would like to see just what charity the clothes go to.

Palin cannot shine Hillary's shoes. She has made a mess of things from the get go. All her winking, blinking and nodding has gotten her nowhere. This is politics.. not the high school prom queen contest.

Hillary knows and understand that the VP position will not give her the opportunity to continue with her fight for health care and other important issues to her. She prefers her present position in the Senate to the VP position. However, that doesnot mean she would not entertain other positions offered to her by Obama which I am sure will be forthcoming.

How about Obama's domestic policies? Obama voted FOR Partial-Birth Abortion (the most barbaric "medical" procedure allowed under the law, and AGAINST the Federal Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which prevents babies that survive an abortion attempt from being killed or left to die. He has also stated that he thinks women should have a period of time after a baby is born to decide if they want it killed! How much MORE do you need to know about Obama? As far as putting Obama and Biden to work, how about getting their supporters a job? Maybe they'd stop trying to steal taxpayers' money then, and stop being paid commenters like these losers!

Palin seems to make policy decisions I agree with around half the time in foreign policy and economics. Unfortunately, she then balances out the rest of it by being so strident in her social conservativism that I can't bring myself to feel anything but intense dislike for her. The emotionally-based populism she inspires among a group of Americans sick of "elitism" - which seems to me to mean making decisions based on formal education or analysis instead of on "gut feeling" and "common sense" or communal belief - utterly repels me. They're incredibly interfering in the personal lives of innocent Americans and often use Biblical beliefs to influence the legal process, which is prohited by our Bill of Rights.

IMO, Palin is poison to the Republican ticket right now - what makes them think that Sarah can headline the ticket? She is a joke and an insult to our intelligence and if this is the direction that the Republican Party is heading, then I can and will not support it.

Sarah Palin is photogenic and telegenic but when she opens her mouth to speak an unscripted sentence it all falls apart and the real Sarah Palin comes out. When John McCain first picked her I thought he did a great job and then as time went by I was appalled and there is no way I will every vote for Sarah Palin. The republican party could choose her but she has no appeal to the moderate middle and she can't win the White House with just her base.

Looking through the list of candidates the GOP put foward in '08, none will be able to make a comeback in 2012. So, the GOP forced Sarah on McCain ( his boring campaing needed a shot of steroids). The GOP know that this will be a learning process for sister Sarah.

As a woman, I have never been more embarrassed. Hillary Clinton did a hell of a job in higlighting the capabilities of women on a political/national level. It's like she moved us 12 steps forward, and here comes Palin to now move us 40 steps backwards. That she has allowed herself to be used (unsuccessfully) by the Republican party is such a shame - especially to those women (across all party lines) who have worked so hard to be taken seriously in leadership roles.

The Polls are wrong and YOUR VOTE WILL COUNT.

By their own admission, the pollsters have stated that they have been asking heavily Democrat voters.

This is still America- last time I checked. And the American people will speak November 4th.

Do not stay home- that's what they are counting on.

Meanwhile Obama's group ACORN is busily stuffing the ballot boxes with fraudulant voter registration AND outright voter FRAUD.

If you live in a state with early voting- take advantage of it- so that you won't wait in long lines on Election Day.

And please- as much as it may break your heart not to vote for "your" candidate- be it Hillary, Huckabee, Paul, Romney, Barr or Baldwin- DON'T throw your vote away by voting your heart.

This is a two party system and it's going to be either McCain or Obama.

We cannot have an inexperienced candidate with a questionable background who will surely (by his running mate's own admission) invite a disater like a terror attack on the U.S. or a nuclear strike by Iran on Israel- to "test his mettle." Perhaps you could find out what Sarah Palins are about releasing the other 8 years of her taxes for voters' review and ANY of her medical records?

We're less than two weeks away from the election and the GOP are allowing this little lady to play spoiled and high-handed petulant on a legitimate protocol. Unlike the other three candidates, Palin has said she has no intention of releasing her medical records and so far has only provided two years of tax detail. Generally, someone who refuses to provide information does so for a reason. There's been quite a bit of discussion about Palin's two tax returns and the fact that she didn't declare her per diem and family travel expenses, totalling $50,000 - $60,000, or the value of gifts she received, around $25,000.

More disturbing, there are some rumors on the internet about her Wasilla home being partially financed by the company that built the Wasilla Sports Complex she fought hard for (in the same manner Ted Stevens got part of his Alaska home renovated). The last 8 years of her tax returns would cover the period when she sold her first home and built the current. Voters have a right to review her 10 yrs' worth of taxes, just like the other candidates. She should not be allowed to disrespect the customs, rules and expectations for candidates of the presidential race.

Along with censure by the Alsaka Senate for Troopergate (which astonishingly she feels proved her innocence!!) and the "I'm qualified in foreign affairs because I can see Russia from my doorstep" comment, certainly ranks Sarah Palin among the most obnoxious, troubling and deceitful people we have had run for office in my recent memory.

Every time the Big Lie rears its ugly head -- "Palin just as qualified as Obama" -- it must be stomped down. The term "executive experience" is waved as if it were a magic wand. Let's not use a catchphrase; let's use our brains. What does the President do? Works with Congress (Obama was in Congress, Palin has no national experience). Works with foreign leaders (Palin had no passport until 2007; Obama has travelled the world and has been involved in foreign issues in Congress).

Bottom line: Obama has training and experience that Palin can't approach. He also has a vision that includes all Americans, not just the small-town, "real" Americans that Palin is courting.

Real Change08...dude, lighten up. First, it's "deplorable", not "diplorable." And...huh, "thimps" should be "thumps". That a Veep candidate, who doesn't know what the actual responsibilities of the position she's campaigning for, is so ardently supported by one who cannot spell is funny. Or...more simply, consistent.

Second, it was McCain who expanded the context of Joe the Plumber beyond Joe's initial arrival into this fall's election, by repeating his name over and over during the 10/26 debate as a prototype for the working classes that could potentially suffer under Obama's tax plans and/or health care plans (pick one). Nothing wrong with that. But the fact is that Joe misrepresented himself during that initial inquiry to Obama, (he's not even licensed) and if it weren't for McCain using Joe 21 times (and to be fair, BO did mention JtP 4 times, later in same), the poor guy would have just faded into the background like many of the others who occasionally get to ask a candidate a question. McCain's campaign, and supporters of that campaign cannot have it both ways, use an everyman as evidence to support whatever positions they promote, then cry foul when the evidence turns out to be faulty.

Finally, you might want to check out the definitiions of "socialist" and "anarchist", I think you will find that the terms are pretty exclusive. And really, "slithers back to Chicago...". Wow. Who's being "low" and "savage" now, huh?

Oh yeah, let Palin run for 2012. Go ahead I say. This reactionary

I think Palin will spend the next four years maintaining a high profile as a GOP standard-bearer and Obama critic, if he is elected, and use this to fuel a primary bid. I also anticipate Mitt Romney will be back in 2012 as well, running on the same criticisms as well as an Aren't-You-Sorry-You-Chose-McCain-Over-Me message. I could even see them battling against each other for the nomination, and the right to claim the title of Conservative Savior. Might make for some interesting watchin.'

But do you understand that the only power the VP has with regard to the Senate is to break a tie vote? He cannot vote otherwise and he cannot propose legislation. In other words he has only one real power, and that is only in the rare case of a tie.

When Gov. Palin was chosen as VP candidate it was and still is my opinion that she was picked as a new face for the GOP going forward. With the bad rep Pres. Bush has at this point in time, a loss by McCain (who the GOP has never really embraced) and the introduction of Palin sets the GOP up for a resurgence in 2012. They are in real need of a makeover and a little distance from Bush can only be accomplished with a loss in '08. The public is too angry and history has proven that the party in power gets punished in that environment. Now she has at least 4 years to educate and position herself.

Palin, in her mind is thinking 2012. Paul Begala, one of the most insightful political commentators, said so after her debate with Biden, she wasn't looking to help her ticket as much as helping her future chances. The problem is that even the republicans who are closing ranks around her now are embarrassed about her privately. She is also sinking McCain's ticket, since twice as many people are saying they won't vote for McCain based on her being on the ticket.

It would be delicious to watch however, how those same republicans who pretend to wax rhapsodic for her treat her candidacy in the republican primaries of 2012.

I am telling my Obama-supporting friends and family that the best way to ensure he wins re-election in 2012 (as it now appears he will win this year) is to actively campaign for Palin starting November 5. After losing this election the Republican’ts will wring their little hands in deep soul searching and decide they have to get back to their conservative base to which Plain so greatly appeals. I think sleeper cells in the Palin campaign will ensure her nomination and she will be on the wrong end of a landside four years hence.

Where she really gets it wrong is the issue of making 'a lot of good policy changes.'

There is a system of checks and balances and the executive branch (of which she hopes she can be a part of) does not also make her a part of the legislative branch which by in large make policy changes, bills, etc. I'm sure Gov. Palin would love to make some policy changes... whether they be good in our lives.... remains to be seen.

However I do commend you on at least including part of the VP's job description in your post... so it shows that you have done some research... best to follow through in the future.

Despite all the claims to the contrary, I can't see where Gov Palin is any less qualified than Sen Obama.

Lack of experience? Check. Show me one major piece of legislation Sen Obama has personally pushed or spent any political capital on during his 4 years in the Senate. Instead, anything controversial comes along, and he votes "present". Gov Palin, for better or worse, did get the natural gas pipeline issue resolved - an issue which had festered for 8 years with her predecessor.

Change the way things are done? Check. Sen Obama has yet to reach out across the aisle to work with his Republican counterparts. He's voted a straight party line - even more than Sen McCain. He couldn't have done otherwise and gotten the nomination. Yet, we're supposed to believe that bipartisanship will magically flourish if/when Sen Obama becomes President. Gov Palin did challenge her party on several important issues during her governorship.

Again, on paper, Gov Palin is just as, if not more qualified than Sen Obama. Her real "crime" is having a different set of values than Sen Obama and his supporters.

It is my prediction that under Pelosi/Reid/Obama rule that it will 1st become contemptible to think differently. Eventually, it will become illegal - think "hate" crimes legislation. After all, adding punishment for thinking differently and having different values than the ruling liberals do is what the hate crimes legislation, the mandatory pharmucetical dispensing legislation, mandatory abortion training for doctors, and the speech codes are all about. Pro-choice and respect for others who choose/think differently are the biggest lies of the Democratic Party. Much closer to the truth is, "Conform, or be re-educated!"

I find it hypocritical that Palin can condem Senator Obama for the church he once attended, when she belongs to a church that has a "Pray the Gay Away Day." She raises money for the State of Alaska by having rape victims pay for their own rape kits, yet charges the State for her kids to travel and stay in expensive hotels in order to attend events they weren't even invited to. Her self-righteous attitude is convenient but dishonest, and her self-serving ambition knows no boundaries. She is an embarrassment when she tries to claim she is one of us, a working mom, trying to balance her work, her life and her family. I'm a working mom, and I sure didn't have anyone that made my life and the life of my kids this easy, and then change expense reports to cover it up!

For all practical purposes, Sarah Palin will cease to exist come November 5, with some kind of final pathetic excuse for why the Obama/Biden ticket won the election with a surplus of 150+ electoral votes. Perhaps the "unreal" Americans had the final word. We could only hope that the Republicans would run Palin as their presidential candidate in 2012 (and 2016, 2020, 2024...) but even they are all too acutely aware of what a monstrous mistake her selection as VP has been.

In one final cloud of ignorance, arrogance and stupidity, we are witnesses the implosion and end of the Republican Party as it has existed since it was hijacked by the right-wing Gingrinch extremists in the 1980s - and that destruction comes not a moment too soon. Perhaps we will see a return to the far more electable and intelligent centrist positions of the "Rockefeller Republicans" without the Medievalism of the neo-cons and their wholly hypocritical "Christian" fundamentalists.

Palin needs to go back to school and sit in a government class and learn what it is that the president and vice president do and thier roles. How can someone such as McCain be so naieve to select someone who doesn't really have a clue as to what they will be doing as the vice president of the United States. This is not the first time she has been asked this question. It was asked of her several months ago after she was choosen as McCains running mate. You would think that she learned her lesson the first time and briefed herself as to what being the vice president was all about. Instead she choose to continue on with her shoot from the hip approach to campaigning. Her lack of respect for the oval office to prepare her self with understanding it's role, shows that she has not taken seriously her position as a candidate. How can we trust her to be prepared to deal with our foreign allies or enemies in meetings, when she has been given ample time to prepare for a simple 3rd grade question such as what is the role of the vice president. She is clearly thinking past the election. I do give her credit for that. Hopefully, she will be better prepared to do the sports reports in her next career on tv.

If you have the opportunity to do business in Alaska and have the chance to speak with some of the state employees, BS like what Palin is doing comes as a no surprise. Everyone I have dealt with up North told me that, Palin's administration in Alaska is all about her never about the state nor the country. It's all her, her and her. Even the Republican Party is not stupid enough to try this twice. She has been exposed and the Republican Party is stuck with her this year. But they won't even remotely turn to her in 2012. Remember, even Dan Quayle ran in '96 and try to remember how long it was before the R's conveniently dumped him using the same rationale that the rest of the country used from '88-'92.

I couldn't tell if this article was genuine, or was written to mock Palin. The more McCain has moved towards "rallying the base", the less votes he gets. By 2012, tens of millions more of the super right wing idealogues will have died off. Not to say they have influence, but we've had a right wing nut in the white house for 8 years, and independents and democrats and some republicans can't stand him.

Palin has the credibility of Dan Quayle. That will not change in 4 years or 40. If McCain wins, Palin should be grateful to have gotten as far as she had.

BOTH parties need to restructure and regroup. The fact the the DNC and party elites snubbed Hillary, the best democratic candidate we've had in 40 years, from the nomination tells me two things. The right wing has taken the republicans hostage, and the left wing the democrats. Its time for a third party of moderate, fiscal conservative, but socially unmenacing voters.

It is very discouraging for a Conservative "Limey" like me to read all these negative remarks about Sarah Palin. If Americans find themselves lumbered with Obama as boss next month, then we shall have two neo-Marxists as leaders of the West, Think of that prospect! For both Brown and Obama are obsessed with taxing our respective countries beyond our limits.

As for Gov. Sarah Palin, I do hope that she will never give in to the liberals. If the McCain-Palin team fails in November, Sarah could do worse than pick herself up, dust herself down, and get back in business as a true Christian conservative. Many, if not most, of Sarah's detractors allege that she does not know much about the American Constitution, but I wonder how many liberals out there feel any kind of affinity with the Pilgrim Fathers of 1612 or their Christian principles? Your country, - just like this one, needs a second Great Awakening.

First, I think the debate about whether Sarah Palin or Barack Obama are “qualified” to be President (or VP) are moot as both are qualified as per Article 2, Section 1 of the US Constitution, which states that the qualifications for President (and therefore Vice-President) are to be a natural born citizen of the US and at least 35 years old.

As for experience and “reaching across the aisle,” I agree with other commenters that Sen. Obama has more experience as a member of congress than Gov. Palin does as Mayor of Wasilla or governor of Alaska. Sen. Obama also has pushed for legislation, including partnering with Republican colleagues on several bills, including:

He teamed with Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., to study the dangers of nuclear proliferation and pass legislation meant to keep nuclear material from falling into the hands of terrorists.

Obama also joined with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., after Hurricane Katrina to improve oversight of federal spending.

And he shared billing with a Republican presidential hopeful when he joined Arizona Sen. John McCain in sponsoring legislation that called for sharp, mandatory cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend.

-After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.

-His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.

-Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years.

-Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations.

-As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.

-He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world.

-Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting.

- In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began.

-Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices.

-Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.

-Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.

-Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.

-Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law.

I think dear Sarah is a drag on the ticket at this point. Originally, she seemed to wipe out Obama's lead but now he has it back and then some. The reason being the financial meltdown and doubts about Sarah. On the positive side, she has energized the base and she seems to have a following among men (blue collar guys). Maybe she is something of a Reagan figure?

I don't blame Sarah for breaking with McCain on the gay marriage issue. McCain is wrong on that one. The constution leaves questions about marriage to the states but marriage as normally, rationally and traditionally defined. Whatever gay marriage amounts to, it is not marriage, period!

However, she should toe the line on the other points pertaining to campaigning.

But McCain needs to move beyond the base and he seems to be losing Independents to Obama when before he was ahead with them. I don't think the Independents care for Sarah as a replacement for McCain. And I just recently found out that she opposes school vouchers. I'm not happy about hearing that. In the final analysis the Palin pick was a mistake.

In any event if McCain goes on to lose which the polls seem to indicate then Sarah has no real future in the Republican party. She might retain a cult following among construction guys but she is a populist and not a true conservative.

Why is everyone saying Obama will screw us over. What evidence do they have to corroborate this? Does it have something to do with 8 years of a Republican White house and 12 years of a Republican controlled congress? Do you people seriously think that the last 4 years that Obama has been in the senate and the last two years that it has been controlled by Democrats caused the current mess?

It is a greater failure that McCain has been in the senate for over 20 years, and yet has done seemingly nothing to avert this mess other than sign on to legislation long after it was introduced that would have mandated greater oversight. And by the time he signed on to it, it would not have had time to avert the crisis.

I do not believe the people claiming to be Democrats who detest Obama are Democrats at all. You're just die hard Republicans trying to convince other Democrats by saying you are a Democrat. An intelligent Democrat would see that the council that Obama served on with Ayers was also served by notable Republicans. This was not a council where Obama chose Ayers. It has been long since debunked that Obama launched his campaign in Ayer's living room.

If you are concerned with political associations, you should be concerned that McCain has no less than three people directly associated with Fannie Mae helping with financial policy in his campaign. Meanwhile, Ayers nor Reverend Wright are in no way directly involved with Obama's campaign, and there is no evidence that they are indirectly involved.

If you are concerned with past political associations, you should also be concerned about McCain's involvement with Charles Keating.

You should be concerned with Palin's direct political association and involvement to a group who detest what they call the "lower 48". They call us the "lower 48 for a reason, they hate the rest of the country.

You have no proof to say that Obama will screw you. He has not screwed Illinois. Republicans have been in power for the last 8 years, and you are *now* screwed. When you can reconnect with reality on this, then we might take something you have to say seriously.

On the contrary, the "best and the brightest" are rarely the great leaders. Lincoln was probably the most unqualified, stupidest, failure-prone President ever elected. With his prior record of failure and lack of education, he would never be elected today. Yet, he was one of the nation's greatest leaders in the worst crisis the nation has endured.

Among the "best and brightest" Presidents we have elected: John Adams, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter (nuclear-trained engineer), William Clinton (Rhodes Scholar). All had name-brand educations, and none are or will be regarded as great leaders. Thomas Jefferson is probably the most notable exception to the rule.

On the other hand, Presidents from more ordinary backgrounds who were/are regarded as successful leaders: Andrew Jackson, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan. True leaders who came from upper class backgrounds, but weren't "best and brightest", include Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, George Washington, and yes, George W. Bush.

Before you condemn the latter selection, think for a minute of how much he has led the country towards his vision. He entered an initially successful war in Afganistan, persuaded the country to enter a pre-emptive war in Iraq, got the No Child Left Behind Act passed, and defunded the federal government for the foreseeable future through a massive set of tax cuts (something Reagan wanted but never accomplished) - all despite virulent hatred of and serious opposition to both his person and policies, No matter whether you view the accomplishments positively or negatively, it's an impressive list.

While it was kind of dumb for Palin to say the VP is in charge of the senate, the implication is not far off base. The VP is the "president" of the senate, attends many senate sessions, and does work somewhat closely with senators. In the end, however, the VP has no influence on how the Senate votes, nor what issues the Senate leaders and committees vote on.

This is such a "no question" regarding 2012 - One of two things will happen

1. McCain/Palin get elected and neither of them will be in a position to run for anything

2. She loses the election and heads back to a far different Alaska then she left. No longer does she have the 83% approval rate - now down in low 60's and dropping. Just as she has alienated many (latest poll says 55% negative) she has also alienated those in Alaska who will see that their stage will just not be big enough for her.....

Someitme between now and 2012 she will eventually have to sit down and discuss real issues, leaving the stump speech behind....

3. It may surprise all of you Palin supporters - you are not in the "majority".....

4. When she got to the point when asked if Obama was a "socialist" and she responded well Joe the Plumber thinks so........even you had to chuckle. Sarah and Joe working together to define our future.....

Palin's cry of just being "one of us regular Americans" just infuriates me. I am from a blue collar background and not an elitist, but I am not Ms Joe Sixpack! My father had only an 8th grade education and started his life out speaking Swedish and he had better grammar than Palin.

What about leadership abilities? Palin just fires anyone who doesn't agree with her? That's leadership? Her husband sticks his nose in everything--the citizens of Alaska did not elect him. My husband would never sit in my work meetings.

I don't think you are bringing your point home by listing George W. and Reagan--two of the biggest idiots we ever had as presidents. I doubt those two could tie their own shoes without someone telling them how.

Also, if you look back through history people like Jefferson and Adams had a very active role in the Senate while being VP. Go to the Senate website, they have a very good history of the position.

Palin and McCain definitely did not talk much prior to her nomination as VP; they have not had the chance to sort out their differences alone, and now everthing is coming out in the public with such a short time left. They are complete opposites on so many issues, I bet even McCain is wondering why he made such a rash decision - he must be kicking himself; more specifically now that Obama is taking advantage of the fact. Organization of the minds do not meet for Palin and McCain. People are not stupid; they see the light and recognize that this is just a front, which is why they continuously give her a poorer grade on a daily basis. Sarah Palin reminds me of a good college basketball player who leaves school after his freshman year just because a team will draft him high enough. How many of these players are never heard of again? (Some do make it) How many players stay all four years get an education and expirance playing ball, then go on to great NBA careers? Palin came out onto the big stage to early, she should have stayed in Alaska until 2012 or 2016. Just because you're asked to the dance doesn't mean you have to go, wait until you're ready. She could have been a VP or president, but it maybe to late.

I do not believe Palin has cost the GOP anything. I have been saying since 2004 that Hillary Clinton was going to be our next president. I am a republican, but I did not thing a republican could win year, it was never going to happen. Same in 2000, after Bill a democrat was not going to win. (I am not a Hillary supporter)

Thats one thing that worries me about Obama, Hillary was way ahead for the nomination, then this 1st term Senator pops up and becomes president. Seems unlikely and frankly a little scarey.

I was referring to mandating my dispensing of birth control and abortion drugs regardless of my personal beliefs - which is/has happened in a significant number of states. I assume you want to deregulate pharmacies? Meanwhile, our well-lobbied Congress, regardless of party in power, has kept pharmacies regulated, with the consequence being high prices.

Sounds like the Murdoch model of "Truth" Broadcasting.

Interesting examples of the depravity and sin nature of man. All were supported by a significant portion of the public and thought to be acceptable by those commiting the deeds. And if you go back another two thousand years, there are plenty more examples. The series of examples, with plenty more happening today, proves to me that moral relativism doesn't work. None of the examples were/are viewed as extremist by their supporters. So blaming extremism doesn't seem to get anywhere for prevention. IMHO, these examples are only clearly wrong when judged by an absolute morality.

This is the last hurrah for the Republican Party for some time. The pendulum went pretty far to the RIght during Bush/Cheney. But the administration was not alone in taking America down several notches. Voters should not forget that Republican lawmakers fell right in step when Daddy Cheney and Bush told them what they were going to do. Include Pseudomaverick McCain in that! After all, big-money Republican donors were making all the rules!! There are Republicans who are disgusted with some of what their Party has turned into, from outspending Democrats and buying up banks, to resorting to slimy political attacks on Barack Obama. Anyone watching the Republican convention had trouble finding an African American or Hispanic face in the crowd of fatcat white people. And if Barack becomes our next President, the Karl Rove dirty politics will have failed, and maybe Rove and his people will finally crawl back under a rock! (Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone used a term for Rove -- ****sucker -- and at first I was a little shocked. But when I think of who Rove is and what he has contributed to the breakdown of America, I think that word will do, until someone invents a worse one!) Hopefully, the Republican Party will rethink how Bush and Cheney ever got elected under their banner, and maybe a major revamping will be attempted. Sarah Palin appeals only to the red-meat, lowest common denominator of the Republican Party, and it truly deserves to be called the "base." Rove plays these Fundamentalist Christians like they are children and he never overestimates his ability to control them! Let's hope the Republican Party decides that a group with strong religious beliefs should not have such sway over a country filled with people who do not share their religious beliefs. When these people try to hijack the Constitution by blabbing about Judeo-Christian roots, they should try reading the Constitution with some understanding that the Founding Fathers warned that Government needed to be free of people just like them, who seek to force their beliefs on others. There will be excuses made for the "hockey mom' who needs $150,000 to dress her family, and who doens't understand the definition of breach of ethics! But I think Alaska can have her back. If she has any thought of national office, there is a large percentage of American voters who think she is a lightweight with rigid ideas who is nasty enough to speak whatever hate Rove people put in her mouth. When Barack and Joe win the White House, we can only hope that most of the country will come together to support the measures they take to put us back as the greatest country in the world. It's interesting to think back to the Clinton years when Republicans hated him, but he put this country into excellent financial shape when just about everyone was working, getting raises, making money, able to change jobs, creating surpluses and things were pretty damn good! May Obama/Biden lead us back to those days!!

African-Americans continue to vote for Democrats no matter what because they claim to support the poor by giving hand outs. Ironically, welfare reform in 1996 pulled more black people out of poverty than any liberal program ever has. Bush's tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 reduced millions of black Americans income tax rate to ZERO while cutting the large and growing black middle class' tax rates. Conservatives support school choice, which would help inner city African-Americans in awful schools far more than any other demographic. Right now the liberals have forced black kids into horrible, failing schools where often only 20-40% of kids graduate. Republicans want to allow their parents to get them out of that hellhole and send them to a school that knows how to graduate their students. African-Americans should be voting for Republicans in my opinion, but I know that's not going to happen in an year with a black Democratic candidate.

Now throw in all the unsavory associations that you simply can’t deny or whitewash and it’s down right scary why anyone would vote for him. He knows nothing about economics, world affairs, war, etc.. All he knows is how to take from those that worked their whole life to get ahead and hand out their hard earned money to those who don’t deserve it. How else do you explain why he would tax those who make $250,000? They worked their butt off and spent major dollars to accomplish that goal and already pay astronomical taxes (the most of anyone in the country) and he is going to come along and tax them even more? It makes no sense. Tell me, why go to school then? Why get advanced degrees and bust your hump only to be penalized for it later? It makes no sense.. It’s against the very fabric of our country.. This is America, work hard and go above and beyond and get the rewards you earned...but not be taxed in addition to the heavy tax burden they already pay.. It’s completely unfair.

About the whole gay marriage thing... Yes Christians typically take excerpts of the bible and blow them up to mean what they want (the bible literally does not say gay sex is evil explicitly and don't tell me Lividcus says so because it really doesn't), but since when is it any of the governments business who marrys who? It is none of their business and they cannot tell me that I cannot legally enter into a binding contract with someone based on what genetalia they happen to have. Marriage in the eyes of the law and of government is a legally binding contract between two people. Marriage based on the church may be between a man and a woman who cares. I don't care if the church ever recognizes gay marriage, but gay marriage in the eyes of the law should have the EXACT same rights as heterosexual marriage because to the law there should be no differece.

Boy, thinking ahead is she? There's a shocker. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the GOP who went to AK to interview her really got snookered.... She turned on the gotcha, down home charm and they fell for it, called McCain and here she is! I think in the beginning she truly thought they would win, but it scares me to death she thought she was qualified! I think little Sarah figured out a few weeks ago they were on a sinking ship and she and the first dude decided to cut their losses, open mouth, insert foot, get the GOP base in a frenzy and start planning. I honestly cannot recall when I have seen anyone, male or female, with such blind, delusional thinking about their accomplishments and where she fits into a national political scene. If that isnt scary, wow, shame on you.

I dont fault her for having children at home; her husband is involved in their care. But her taking this poor infant with special needs all over the place (he is not a toddler, an infant), showing him like a campaign plug of some sort sickens me. Again, she uses whatever/whomever for her own personal gains. She is frighteningly dangerous.

I dont care if she can see Russia from her bathtub. This is one we all need to watch out for in any national election until the end of time. My only regret is that Hillary was not the VP nominee; how much fun would THAT VP debate have been, Hillary and this one. No sexist rambling talk then. Howard Stern did interviews on the street and asked what they thought of Obama's plan to win the war, drill for offshore oil, build nuclear powerplants, and all the other tenets of the McCain platform and they said he was great, all those things would be great for the country. So, most of the hoopla is for a candidiate that most people don't know anything about. I think it is time for a new intelligence test to qualify voters, most don't have a clue. Why not point out all the contradictions with what he (Obama) says in his book and what he is saying now. Why not talk about his complete lack of experience to lead the free world. Yes, he gives good speeches, yes, he is charismatic, but then so was Hitler!!

Who really cares what Palin has to say. She got her 15 minutes worth of fame and then some. She got to parade around like a junior high school cheerleader at a Friday pep rally - only she incited hatred, racial and ethnic slurs and got to wear pretty, expensive clothes, travel all over the USA and slam another candidate along the way. She has already said she has nothing to lose. She was in this for one thing and one thing only - for herself.

She has shown over and over again she is egotistical, manipulative and revengeful. If she thinks for one moment the Republicans (and others) will blame her for a November 4 defeat, of course she is going to start thinking about her recourse - that being, doing what Sarah does best - talk and talk and talk. By the time these next two weeks are over she will have said so much that no one could possibly remember all she has said (unless her oops are on tape). If she is campaigning for the future and a run in 2012, she might want to take some English lessons, drop the folksy crap like

"you betcha, gotcha, I'll get back to ya, dropping the final ing's, etc.", winking, and take some diction lessons and get rid of that nasal twang. She might want to brush up on the Constitution of the United States of American and learn the responsibilities of each branch of government - including the vice president and president, maybe she'll have time to memorize it before 2012.

On the other hand, from what most people have seen and heard maybe it would be better for her to load up her brood and the Dude (AIP member and anti-American husband) and fly back to Alaska and live in their "free" house and continue stealing from the rich state of Alaska. She

will also have an opportunity to explain to her citizens about her recent charges and maybe explain herself out of what looks like other investigations to follow. Maybe Sarah Palin learned something here in the lower-48 - we have morals and ethics and are smarter than she thought.

Maybe she fooled the people in Alaska and fooled John McCain and the desperate Republicans - she didn't fool the rest of us.

There's nothing calibrated when Palin speaks. She's a conservative right out of the religious right base, the complete opposite of what McCain is. They are the only people that currently support Palin and she's proven repeatedly unable to speak to other voters on any remotely qualifiable level for the VP spot. She'll throw up a trial balloon in 2012, but it will quickly get shot as religious right voters opt for more qualified conservatives, of which there are many.

It is amazing to me how tacky people can get when they are faced with discussing someone who has differing views from their own. Sarah Palin is not stupid or she wouldn't have gotten where she is today. I am also dissapointed in how far removed our country has come from the noble ideas of our fore fathers, who fought taxation and tyranny to create a free nation. Now tell me, how free are we when our government raises taxes on the wealthy to "give" to others (I seriosuly doubt any of us typing here will see that benefit). The original plan for government was to provide protection for personal property and to defend the nation...not give handouts to those who choose not to create better lives for themselves. Obama has no idea what he is doing...he is a mere puppet for the Democratic party. At least Sarah Palin has actual experience in making decisions for her constituents...good or bad, that is better than voting a couple of times in the Senate.

About inner city parents having the choice to send their kids to another school. Wow. First of all there usually is not a set of 2 parents. More than likely the poorest of children are being raised by grandparents or aunts. It's not the Democrats that force these children to go to schools in their neighborhood, it's the zoning requirements. In 6th grade I was bussed across town into a very high crime and poor minority school - I hated it. The next year I was back at a school in my neighborhood. It doesn't make any sense and don't you think it would cost a lot of tax payer dollars to start shipping kids all over the place when they could easily walk down the street to a school nearer to them? The answer is not to ship them away to a school in a white neighborhood where they don't relate to their fellow students or the teachers. The answer is to work with the teachers and community leaders in the disenfranchised area to make the existing school better.

Unless HE invented the internet, was writing software, building cell phone towers, or starting all the .com's who's only value were on the stock market. Anybody could have been president then and the tech boom would have happened, it could have been a baked potato or even Dan Quayle.

To add to that, no matter who wins Nov 4th, the economy will recover before their 1st term is over. That party will get credit and will win in 2012. In my opinion this election is for an eight year term (unless the winner really really messes things up).

In the long run, would we prefer that those with vast wealth, many of whom pay almost nothing in taxes according to the current structure be allowed to keep everything they make, or should we reduce or eliminate taxes for the hard-working folks at the lower end of the income spectrum? To me the answer is sooo easy. Obama can be a great President; McCain is a washed-up old fogey who doesn't have the capacity to make intelligent decisions (I.e.his choice of Palin).

Why don't you and some of your hot shot investigative journalists do a little investigation on the financing and puchase of the Palin Home in Wasilla. Supposedly, it was built by Todd Palin and some of his contractor buddies. I believe it has also been confirmed that some of those same "contractor buddies" won the contract for and built the Wasilla Recreation Center to the tune of about $12 million. I'll bet a months paycheck that you will find out that the Palins got a killer deal if not some illegal handouts from the people that built that house. Palin has learned a thing or two from Senator Stevens. Thiis woman has no concence whatsoever and no end to her thirst for power. She fits in very well with the rest of the neocons.

Pay a little more in taxes? This statement indicates a lack of historic knowledge. This approach has been used many times throughout several countries, always with bad results. Our government has a terrible track record with managing anything efficiently or effectively. Taxes and their application expand over time. Government health care is a disaster everywhere it has been used.

America became the richest country in the world by way of free enterprise. Other countries all through history have relied on government to manage, all have fallen short of potential. Obama's tax plans will reward people for not working, or not trying. North Korea is the one of the few countries still trying this government control, they can hardly feed their people. Russia gave up on it, Cuba still tries, but no one wants to live there. Something for nothing sounds good, elect Obama and you will not like the results in a few years.

It was not the ideology of small government that got Reagan elected. It was his idea of tearing down the barriers that were preventing people from getting ahead. UPWARD MOBILITY. Lower taxes, less illogical regulation that held business creation back, etc.

The Reagan revolution has hoisted itself on the petard of globalization which has decreased the wage bargaining power and incomes of the middle class. The sense of middle class UPWARD MOBILITY is gone.

The way for the GOP to come back is to break its connection with multinational corporations (which have not added any new US jobs). The GOP should be a culturally conservative party that concentrates on small business (which creates all the jobs in the US). Certain aspects of free trade should be reined in to aid small business. This way the GOP could be the populist party both culturally and economically. The multinational corporate elite have more in common with the cultural elites of the Democratic Party, especially Wall Street.

Palin scares me! She obviously hadn't read the Constitution when she didn't know what the Vice President's job was. And now she wants to expand the power of the Executive to have the right to preside over the Senatorial side of the Legislature.

She has shown how she would govern with her abuse of power and appointment of unqualified cronies whom she had attended high school with.

And to find that not only her daughter is pregnant out of wedlock; but that she was also by Todd is very disturbing, especially from one who doesn't believe in sex education or contraceptives. We had been doing so well on decreasing teen pregnancies.

And now the Republican National Committee must bear the cost of clothing and grooming. She makes Edward's haircut look like a bargain. That $150,000 would be fully taxable to her and is probably the reason that they've issued statements that after the campaign all of it will be donated to charity. Still that leaves the $40,000 grooming which she is required to claim as income.

And not being aligned with the Republican Party till fairly recently, it's no wonder she doesn't know the difference in the mascots of the two parties. But I'm shocked none of her handlers said anything. Still, after spending all that money on her image, I can't imagine the GOP being happy with her wearing a Democratic scarf at on of her recent rallies. Picture at:

For 4mygirl.. I am going to guess you are younger than some of the posters, myself included, and I admire that you feel women should stick together. Sadly, this does not often happen in real life, be it politics or otherwise.

As a middle aged white female, Palin is more frightening than anything I have ever seen. I do believe, contrary to the poster below, that she is JUST this crafty and calculating to be looking ahead to 2012, etc. I am wondering now how much of McCain's policy she even agreed with at first, or just winked and nodded so she would be the nominee, and onto the national level to feed her overblown, and, I must say, undeserved self-image. I dont think this one would stop at anything to get what she wants, not a thing. She does have the "base" of the GOP, but honestly, I hope when things sort out in AK folks will see her true qualities..... scarier than anything most of us could dream up. She is unable to talk about real issues, has zero knowledge of the world/government.... although now she has good clothes. I saw some criticism of Mr. Romano for supposedly picking sides. No matter if you are Republican or Democrat you can agree that Palin does not know much about our 3 main branches of government. Her answer to Katie Couric that the Executive Branch has little to do with the Supreme other than to uphold the law of the land shows she has no clue that the Executive Branch is responsible for nominating Supreme Court Justices. Given the fact that we have 3 possible openings in the next administration I'd say that her lack of knowledge in that respect is a VERY important disqualifier.

Now she thinks that the VP is instrumental in developing legislation. This is just another highlight in a long string of events that prove she is not up to par for the job she is applying for.

Sarah Palin is not qualified for national politics!!! She is definitely not qualified for international politics, and I betcha Alaskans are questioning whether or not she is qualified for state politics at this point!!!

To all the people on here claiming that raising taxes on the richest 5% of our country is socialism: Please read up on the definition of capitalism. The man who wrote the book on politics, Adam Smith, said that in order for Capitalism to work the people that are most prosperous in a Capitalist system MUST bear a larger burden in maintaining it's existence. They must pay higher taxes to ensure that the system does not fail... This false belief that cutting rich people's taxes will somehow cause more money to trickle down to the middle class is a farce.

Also, those claiming that Obama wants to turn medicine over to the government is another false claim. What he wants to due is create credits for those who DO NOT HAVE COVERAGE RIGHT NOW. THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE COVERAGE CAN KEEP THEIR BENEFITS. This is not "socailized medicine". I think socialized medicine is a great idead though. Those of you saying it would be horrible probably cannot cite anything to backup your claims. I participated in a few meetings with colleagues from Denmark, and Sweden (both countries have socialized medicine), and rank higher than us in overall healthcare). I had the opportunity to ask them about the pros and cons of socialized medicine. In terms of medicine everyone agreed that having socialized medicine is much better than the system we have here. They could not fathom a healthcare system where one could not go to the hospital if they needed to due to not having insurance. In these countries they take care of their own regardless of their status. Another thing they couldn't understand was the prices of prescription drugs in America. Their governments have negotiated much lower prices for drugs in their countries. Even Canada pays half what we pay here for drugs.

I think a lot of you have been duped into thinking "socialism" is a bad word. I say this because none of you are on here complaining about socialized law enforcement being practised here in the US as we speak. You say nothing about socialized fire fighting, which is also going on right here in the US right now. You say nothing about socialized education going on here right now... Why do you fear it in health care?

She has her own opinions. I think many of you have forgotten what a VP/VP candidate is after 8 years of muddying waters on the subject. The VP candidate is someone who balances the ticket for a Pres. candidate. Most times, the Pres. and VP candidates dont like each other very much, have differing views on the country, and once elected, the VP is largely cast away into solitude for 4-8 years. Sarah Palin is not very similar to John McCain; and in a world of honesty, McCain would voice his disdain for her. Really, she is the polar opposite of what McCain has been his whole career. Im not judging her views, or his, believe me, that is not the point of my post. If McCain loses, however, it doesn't change the fact that she has personal ambitions seperate of him. She isn't someone who has been riding shotgun with McCain her whole career; she simply was provided an opportunity and she took it. No one should blame her for that; but make no mistake, her alligence is to herself, and her family, not John McCain.

Throughout much of the past year I have been undecided and I thought that this November I was going to vote for McCain, he seemed to be much more centered than most of the garbage that has run for office under the party's banner. The selection of Palin as running mate only made me realize that although McCain himself is both acceptable and admirable, Governor Palin is much of the same regurgitated garbage that has spewed from the party for so many years; beyond that she is dismally qualified at best for the position of VP of the United States. The concept that she was even chosen as McCain's running mate boggles me, and I cannot find any one quality that makes her valuable to his campaign. The McCain-Palin ticket has only pushed me to vote Obama-Biden.

Electing someone on the basis of "values" as was done with George W. Bush, does not make things better. We are all entitled to vote for the person of our choice, but that person should be qualified for the job. The last that I checked "Christian" is not one of the qualifications that makes a candidate a "great" candidate, nor is it a requirement.

It's just a thought, another talking point that I've discussed with my colleagues. I would hope that I won't be attacked and labeled an out of control liberal for this posting. I am myself a Catholic.

For those who claim she has been a governor, hence such a qualified woman, there are far better than she. They were jammed up, needed a new face, gutsy mouth and picked Palin. It's a disgrace for anyone to compare Palin to someone like Hillary Clinton, Ruth Baden Ginsburg, etc., as an outstanding, new breed of woman. She's got a lot to learn.

And, as for this 150K for clothing, I dont have a huge issue with the clothes buying. However, having said that, I think 150K is almost laughable its so much money and it totally blows out the Joe 6-pack, average mom idea. She certainly needed extra clothes; depending on how many rallies a day she attends, if something gets dirty, it's hot, and so yes, she does need fresh clothes. But, I can't say I know very many hockey moms shopping in Neiman's or Saks.... They usually go for the upscale local department store. Palin could have done that and won more approval. See? She is sucking this race for all its worth and poor McCain with it. I hope she got matching shoes for the outfits!

As governor she taxed the big oil companies in AK then distributed $1200 to each Alaskan citizen. Nothing wrong with that. However, if I'm not mistaken, that is just spreading the wealth, very socialist behavior because the oil companies were given the choice of pay up or do not do business the same way in AK.

Gov. Palin is absolutely allowed to have her beliefs, whether they are mine or not. She has a deep-seated base in the GOP who share her beliefs. Nothing wrong with that either. What is wrong is her overzealous, almost obsessive determination to have everyone on the same page as she is. We all have our own beliefs and have no right to force them on anyone; this includes Palin and I am seriously wondering if she has some sort of control issue. In any event, hopefully she will go back home on Nov 5, try to sort out the violations she has commited in Alaska, and we will put her in the corner with Dan Quayle. If not, and she turns up again, the 55% who dont like her today will be much larger.

Time_for_change_08 makes some good points, but speaking as an independent voter, he also illustrates why I don't often vote Republican these days, though this was not always the case.

Language like calling Obama a socialist or neo-Marxist turns my stomach. I well remember the cold war, I remember the air raid drills in school and being timed on how long my walk home took, in case of a nuclear war. Obama is not a socialist or a neo-Marxist, and the hyperbolic language Gov. Palin uses is quite frankly offensive, as is your statement to that end. You are entitled to your opinion, but moderates like myself will never be on board as long as the candidates talk like this.

The way I see it, the Republicans want to talk about Ayers, Socialism, and Obama's readiness for government. But the majority of the country is past that; it's all economy now. It goes over well with the base,, but you can't get elected with the base alone anymore. The country is moving away from Christian conservatism, and the GOP will have to move as well or get used to losing.

I am for the record, a conservative who believes in small government and a deficit hawk. But the party has moved away from those values

When the President is impeached, the Chief Justice of the United States of America presides over the Senate during the impeachment trial. I believe that a sitting president can not just sign a bill unless it passes congress correct. And if I am not mistaken the liberals do control congress correct. Some people are already hinting at a Palin run for the presidency in 2012 (and thereby effectively conceding defeat for McCain).

Palin may very well return to a much more hostile Alaska. She was riding on the coattails of an over-inflated price for a barrel of oil that delivered huge profits to her state. People were willing to give her a pass with respect to her management style so long as they shared a piece of the profit pie.

Well, the price of oil has plummeted and as a result, the Alaskan economy will suffer. Her statewide ratings have already dropped 20 points, and the increased scrutiny of her conduct while governor has given many Alaskans another perspective of her leadership. I suspect we have only seen the tip of her "mismanagement" and "abuse of power" iceberg.

By the next election cycle, Sarah Palin will very likely no longer have the positive image or clout to contend for the presidency. In fact, she may be lucky to get re-elected as governor.

Growing up in the Philippines, one can't help but see how American political and military representatives greatly helped in screwing up the quality of political and business institutions in the Philippines. But poetic justice really does happen.

Now, American politicians and military institutions have reached a sufficient level of viciousness to destroy the quality of life of ordinary Americans the way Filipino politicians crushed ours. And Americans can run but can't hide from them.

Republicans in particular have proven to be every bit as vicious and pro-elite as the worst politicians in the Philippines. Now, Americans even have an Imelda Marcos in the making -- Sarah Palin! They both started out as socially dumb beauty queens too. At the end of the miserable Marcos regime, everyone in the world literate enough to read newspapers know about Imelda's infamous shoes. Palin already has started out already along the same line; she's charging outrageously expensive designer clothes to the RNC. And not even a winnable candidate yet...

Both parties suffered the damaging effects of propoganda, misleading and distorted information, without any regards to second thought before it was publishing. It turns out that RNC has spent $150,000 on clothes for Sarah Palin. They also spent $100 for a romper and hat for little Trig, which he wore on stage at the GOP convention.

Did you know that the outfit Cindy McCain wore when she appeared at the convention cost $330,000?

The RNC says that later Sarah's clothes will be donated to charity. OK, so some homeless person will get to wear this stuff on the streets of New Orleans. (Maybe this is the RNC's version of "trickle down spending.") But wouldn't the homeless be better served by $150,000 donation to a shelter or a food bank than by designer clothing?

Fifteen years ago, McCain wrote an amendment to tighten the law on using campaign funds for personal items like clothing and stylists. In May of 1993, McCain said this on the Senate floor "The use of campaign funds for items which most Americans would consider to be strictly personal reasons, in my view, erodes public confidence and erodes it significantly."

I guess he forgot what his prior position was. Again.

Just like he forgot that he used to be pro-Choice and pro-gay marriage and pro-immigration reform. He also forgot that he used to be afiliated with ACORN, and with G. Gordon Liddy. If he is lying to cover up what his prior positions have been, shame on him. If he really can't remember, maybe the detractors who claim his mind is aging are correct.

One last thought: is the GOP paying for Bristol Palin's maternity wear?

There are many better Republican choices than Palin in America but "Maverick McCain" decided he needed some pazzaz to dress up his Drab Campaign so he brought in the underqualified and poorly educated ex-beauty queen in that is very inexperienced in as his Public Relations Aide to give us a Big Show to try to distract us from the facts that McCain is a poor candidate who has just got where he is because he has some knowledge of military affairs. McCain lost his opportunity when Bush beat him in year 2000 and America realizes that McCain is not right for America in 2008!!!

2012, if she was going to dothat she should have put her foot down with how far she would go with his hate campaign, It will be over for McCain if he lose, Palin would have had a chance in 2012 or 2016 but she and McCain ran a campaign of division.

Of course Palin would have to go back to school and gain some intellectual knowledge about politics and the world, especially the U.S.A. and how government works.

I am a black american raised by two black parents. They sent me to a baptist church and I was raised in that faith with love and understanding. I met and married a women in the same faith (christianity) who wasa cradle catholic. I later joined the Catholic church on my own accord. What we are raised in does not always dictate what we decide to do as adults. As for the muslim faith, stop confusing it with the taliban and other extremist sects. Not all white people lack rhythm. Not all mexicans come here illegally. Not all blacks play sports or speak in slang. I beseech you to explore what others truly believe and do not recite rhetoric and hate.

Re the Sarah Palin going for herself in 2012 rather than for McCain: This is right on target. Governor Palin's history in Alaska politics is quite clear--she has consistently turned against people who helped her on the way up, and always with the rationalization that they were not sufficiently pure on ideological grounds. It looks as though McCain will not be elected, but if he is, one of his first appointments should be a food taster. She would definitely use the vice presidency to undermine any tendency McCain might have to moderation or bipartisanship.

During the Vice Presidential debate she repeatedly made statements that contradicted McCain's voting record. Her excuse was, "how much can you expect after only five weeks". She had dutifully memorized the campaign promises in the five weeks since meeting him for the first time, but of course had not learned where McCain stood on every issue in his 26 senate years.

It is not the small towns of "real america", nor the cities of the financial and "intellectual elite". It is a mixture, that comprises of immigrants both old and new, and is still evolving. If she is serious about truly changing this country, she would embark on a tour of the ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Go to Harlem and sit in a black church. Go to East L.A. and listen to the stories of Hispanic People. Go to San Fransicco and hear the views of those whose lifestyles she does not agree with, but must protect as part of any Constitutional Oath. Dont follow the archaic notion of just rallying the "base". Don't listen to the Rush Limbaugh's, Ann Coulters and others who have no solutions to offer.

From what I've learned about her, she's an opportunist, i.e. Republican, ignores laws she doesn't like (sounds familiar), uses people for advancement, handles her infant son like he's toxic and she never held a baby before, has very LIMITED understanding about the world around her nd is basically a tool of the Republican party.

I guess if the PTA counts as management, and being governor of a state of less tha a million (who wouldn't even notice she was gone if she weren't there till the next budget was due) is enough, then let's just make the VP pick like American Idol.

We'd probably find someone vastly more qualified and believable, too.

Are you white or some other ethnicity? I felt compelled to respond when I read your post response. How is Africentric thought considered anti-white? I grew up and still live on the South Side of Chicago, of which you speak. How is is that you came to be such an authoritarian on African American cultural discourse? I don't necessarily consider your comments racist; I consider them ill-informed and shaped by a culture that has historically looked down upon and misinterpreted its citizens of African descent.

The House Negro, of which you speak, was typically the slave who worked in the house with the slavemaster. Some House Negroes identified so much with the slavemaster that they tied their interests and allegiances to the one who deprived them of their freedom. The Field Negro was typically the slave who worked the fields from sun-up to sun-down, was beaten and suffered the worst under the slavery institution. House Negroes were typically treated better than Field Negroes, however there were House Negroes that despised slavery as much, if not more, than Field Negroes.

Africentric thought is not inherently anti-white. Africentric thought and scholarship identifies the contributions of people of African descent to the rise and development of civilization as we currently know it. It isn't necessarily a hate-filled attack against western civilization. However, it does accurately highlight historical misrepresentations of African peoples' cultural contributions and western peoples' (i.e., white) attacks on African peoples.

This is a grossly truncated synopsis of the clarification that was sorely needed. However, if you are sincere in your understanding, I suggest two books for starters: The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Before The Mayflower by Lerone Bennett Jr. I wish you much success and enjoyment in your academic pursuits!

There’s been some speculation in the media and the blogosphere lately about whether Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will end up as the new standard bearer for the Republican party in the event she and Sen. John McCain fail in their bid for the White House.

I honestly can’t conceive of a more ill-considered idea for more reasons than it’s possible to enumerate in a reasonable amount of space, but let’s cover a few of the most critical ones.

First and foremost, Gov. Palin represents everything that has gone wrong in politics in this country over the past 25 years – on both sides of the aisle. The United States stands at the brink of catastrophe on a number of issues, including the economy, national security, healthcare, education, societal equality and foreign policy.

If we don’t come together right now – really and truly come together – to begin a dialogue to address and try to fix these problems, we will never regain our standing as an example of what a nation can be, to say nothing of increasing the untold suffering of millions of Americans because of these issues.

The very last thing any rational, thinking person should want to do is choose a woman whose entire political career is founded on the politics of division – us versus them – as their voice in Washington or on the stage of world politics. If that sounds a tad alarmist, consider the fact that Sarah Palin has gleefully plowed this particular furrow since the moment she was thrust into the national spotlight.

Palin has exhibited this dangerous trait since the infancy of her climb through the ranks, using wedge issues like abortion rights to become mayor of Wasilla and then cynically playing on the frustrations of voters to cast herself as a reformer and bulldoze her way into the governor’s office.

Sure, along the way she blew the whistle on an ethics violation that came to her attention, but the motivation behind the move is suspect, which brings me to my second point.

From the instant Palin became a public servant, there has been evidence that her actions are dictated by what’s in it for her. People who have worked for and with her have related numerous incidents in which conflict of interest played a part – even when the fact was brought to her attention.

It doesn’t take a congressional investigation to see it’s a safe bet the record profits being enjoyed by oil companies and firms working in Iraq like KBR and Haliburton are a by-product of associations with officials in the Bush administration – associations that began long before Bush moved into the White House.

Granted, Vice President Dick Cheney resigned from Haliburton during the 2000 election (with a healthy severance package and a nice chunk of deferred compensation). Now, hands up those who think he’s been measuring for drapes at Haliburton’s Dubai headquarters as the end of Bush’s second term approaches?

Palin refused to step back from the table when Wasilla officials were discussing their financial involvement with a snow mobile race her husband participated in every year and conveniently eliminated building permits just before beginning construction on a new house, raising questions about whether the contractor and construction company for the new Wasilla Sports Complex did the work.

Do we really want someone like this in the Oval Office? Or anywhere in national government for that matter? Imagine what colossally self-serving things Palin could do with that kind of power. It boggles the mind.

As does the prospect of having a woman who appears to find anyone superior to her – intellectually or otherwise – a threat and a personal insult lead the country or a government agency. It’s not necessary to look very far to find anecdotes of this behavior throughout Palin’s life.

Whenever her apparently damaged self image was confronted by someone she perceived as a threat, she used every means available to find a way to get into a position to be able to punish them – especially those her paranoid nature labeled as political enemies. Anyone remember a guy named Richard Nixon? Barracuda indeed.

And speaking of (soon-to-be) former presidents, is there any doubt that a willful lack of intellectual curiosity and a stubborn refusal to see beyond the end of his nose contributed greatly to the disastrous administration of George W. Bush?

The resemblance between Gov. Palin and President Bush in this regard is chilling. Palin has obviously never deigned it necessary to concern herself with anything outside of her limited universe – again, unless it was personally advantageous to her.

When asked by Katie Couric to name the newspapers and magazines she gets her information on current events from, Simple Sarah was unable to specifically name one, replying, “All of ‘em, any of ‘em.”

Please. Anyone who reads the news on a regular basis has at least one preferred source that they would likely to be able to name in an instant with no thought required.

I could go on to talk about Gov. Palin’s apparent religious intolerence (painting all Muslims as terrorists), her obvious homophobia (the book she objected to in the Wasilla public library dealt openly with homosexuality and she has emphatically stated her support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage), her laughable lack of knowledge about the basic duties of the office she’s running for (she recently claimed the V.P. is in charge of the U.S. Senate), troopergate (again, using her official position for a personal grudge) and her mind-numbing refusal to acknowledge her own mistakes (“I’m very, very pleased to have been cleared of any legal wrongdoing…”), but we’ll leave those topics for another time.

Please don’t think for a moment that I’m naïve enough to not know that some of these things are part of the fiber of anyone who goes into politics – or draws breath, for that matter. It’s a fact I will readily acknowledge.

However, the truly great politicians – and people – are the ones who were able to recognize these negative facets of their personalities and turn them toward trying to improve the lives of everyone, not just themselves, their families and their friends.

Gov. Palin likes to talk about character. A lot. I’ll admit it’s possible that she can learn all of the things her critics have complained she doesn’t know. Anyone can learn. But we all know how difficult it is to overcome bad behavior and habits after a lifetime of indulging and even benefiting from them. So her character is something I don’t believe Sarah Palin can change at this stage of the game. Therefore she has no place anywhere near the White House.

If they somehow steal this election as they have done in the last 2 America deserves to sink even further in the areas of education, health care, jobs shipped elsewhere, staying involved in a WINLESS war, etc. I hope every republican that votes republican this Nov has a child that goes to Irag or Pakistan, or Korea, or Iran where ever the repugs will go next and suffer the horrors of war so they can FEEL the results of their vote as decent people have FELT the results of the current crook. Okay Nickgr. The Malcolm X movie and the book are two completely different things. Watching the movie doesn't make you an African American historical officianado. As I will assume you're aware that a movie typically leaves out a lot more than what the book details. Your claim that there are no African civilizations of which to speak is patently wrong and factually incorrect. You are obviously not aware of the civilizations of Mali and Songhay, for example, and the great libraries of Timbuktu that existed during the Middle Ages, for starters. However, it seems evident to me that sharing such information with you may be a complete waste of time. Sometimes, some white people have to put down others to make themselves feel better. I refer to such put-downs as cultural inadequacy crutches. I have shared some books with you to study if you are interested in truly learning. If not, enjoy your crutches. At a time such as this as we face as a nation and world, we need a "transformational figure" as described by a true American patriot and intellect, Colin Powell. Technology cannot be based simply on electronics. Civilization cannot be based on that old european standard. "Palin for President" is not music to my ears. It would be the equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard. Then again, it would give comedians a LOT of material! She would, of course, have four years to completely cover her tracks or destroy medical records. Sadly, there will be some people who will remember her fondly as the "hockey mom from nowhere" and they will vote for her.

Once when Gracie Allen campaigned for President as a publicity stunt, she was surprised to find out that people actually voted for her. If she were to run against Palin, we could only hope that America would be wise enough to choose Gracie.

The Africans were free,before white colonialisation & free from whites for the past 50 years.

Whenever they were free,they did not develop any civilisation ,any economic progress.

Wherever the whites left,there is poverty,famine,war...

The blacks should not have any inferiority complex for having no civilisation.

Even the whites,as masses,were illiterate till the 19thcentury.

Many were goatherders & also had other use for goats...

Mr nickgr,

I fail to see how a simple correction of a view is considered diatribe. I am not here to fight you or trade insults. I am not that petty. I am here because there are over 300 million americans holding their breathe for an uncertain future.

As for culture and illiteracy, many cultures have their own language and way of passing it along. Civilization is in the eye of the beholder. We of the western culture denounce others because they choose another path. I concede that many of the african peoples and other cultures as well, have had difficulty reasserting themselves after they were freed. That sir is to be expected given the degree of suppression they experienced. I for one pity anyone who fails to remeber that healing is not instantaneous.

Iam not inferior to anyone. I am a child of God and am equal to every person who has ever walked this planet. I agree that some feel that emotion. The best thing to do is to put out a hand and raise them up. We must reach out to each other as equal each and every single day. America was built on some very strong vitues. It was also built on some underlying faults. In this age I believe we are fixing the cracks in our foundation. It is a slow process but it is gaining momentum.

I will vote for mR Obama because I believe he wants our country to grow and cooperate with other peaceful nations. The age of barbarism has passed and I see Mr Obama as a leader nto an age of better things. The world has too many labels and separations. It is a "me" and those like "me" attitude that hurt us all. I vote for him because he believes negative campaigning while used by him too does not have to incite hatred and fear.

I wrote earlier this week about my dislikes toward governor Palin. I stand by them and a few other issues I have toward her. Her iol fight with the big companies paid Alaska but passed the costs to the rest of the country. Her plane was sold for less than it was worth by a broker ad not on ebay. She used a police plane instead which pulled it from it's assigned duties 20% of the time. She made a librarian very uncomfortable regarding books in Wasilla. She has actually distanced some of her own stances from her own running mate. There lies a "me" mentallity.

Civilisation is not a subjective term,it is a generally ascceptable one...

For instance,healing by surgery is civilisation,"healing " by...black magic is not...

It is astonishing that u don't question Obama ties with Ayers & Wright but u take into consideration a plane,a librarian etc...

Anyway,blacks who hate whites should vote for Obama,but blacks who like whites & our common white culture should crossover to McCain.

Blacks have been getting preferential treatment for 40 years.. isnt it time to move on? The term is acceptable but the viewpoint but not be narrow. The american native we call indians had a vast nation but used none of the technology that was later brought from europe. Do you deny they had a civilization. The mayans, the aztecs and many others used plants to heal and called it magic (in their language). The world was once flat and Columbus was destined to sail right off the edge. Not so, huh?

I believe Mr Obama made a mistake in his failure to vet his early associates. Reverend Wright is a man of extreme viewpoint and a product of his times and want for celebrity. I do believe Mrs. Palin has a minister who does witch hunts. The two cancel ach other out..LOL. Do you know anyone who may have commited a crime? Have you ever befriended someone who was once a criminal? Have you ever gone over the speed limit? (trivial you might think but what if you had lost control or a child walked into the street). People change and grow and get better. i am an optimist. Mayber Sarah will grow to be a great politician. i hope so. I believe that she is too green and not mature enough not to abuse her power should she be appointed VP.

My skin is not voting here. My genetic structure is 99.9999 the same as yours. I could possibly even be a distant cousin of yours. One of my sons is very light-skinned. Color does not set choices. Issues are the key here. Our culture is a mixing pot of ideas, backgrounds and perceptions. Vote for McCain because you believe in him not his skin. Vote for Obama because you believe in him and not his skin. Vote for one race...the human one.

He advocated and pushed hard for the Iraq War- an unneeded war based on subversion and duplicity.

Another huge problem, in 26 years of senatorial work McCain was a huge deregulator of financial and business institutions.

In other words McCain has his name all over the current economic/foreign crisis- in a way, he has authored the current melt-down!

And what leadership does he offer from his campaign- he slips a Trojan Horse into our nation, into our homes, into our hectic lives better known as Sarah Palin.

She is more to "more to the right" than George "W" and Dick Cheney put together!

He denounced Wright. He also has not seen Ayers in years. Do we also impugn the wntire college Ayers teaches? Look at the issues that matter the economy, the choices our candidates are making in the recent years, foreign affairs, health care and taxes. The polls show most people do not want to hear anymore about the crap. They do want to hear about how they can survive until the next paycheck. I do not see those isues being resolved in a McCain presidency. When you vote toss out Ayers, color, Wright, Leiberman, Bush, Joe the PLumber and just get down to the issues.

Both sides have pulled people out of the everyday world and put them under media scrutiny. Their families probably don't appreciate the intensity of the media microscope. Good luck to you and your candidate.

But spreading the wealth around means I have not reason to work hard, if I do he'll take more more money from me, if I don't work hard he'll give me money to live on. Buy me a car, cell phone, everything you need to live today. Where are the consequeses of being lazy and stupid? A liberal is more likely to believe in Darwinism, survival of the fittest, but not with humans, if you are unfit they'll give you anything you need.

Unless he is assuming that most Americans are to stupid to do it themselves, and unturn to stupid to know he thinks they're stupid so they vote for him.

Hello?! "Spread the wealth"--umm, isn't that exactly what taxes are? It comes down to what you believe is the better/fairer manner of assessing taxes--should the tax burden be shared equally, regardless of income, or assessed on a scale, increasing the percentage for higher income brackets? Since no one is advocating ending taxes, the spread the wealth conversation makes no sense at all.

Agree on all points, nickgr. Taxes in this country currently spread the wealth and that those who earn more, pay more. A Harrison Bergeron world is closer than many admit. I find it disconcerting that the phrase "spread the wealth" upset so many who apparently don't realize that is exactly what we do now. I've read comments that indicate the poster finds this a new and startling concept. It's disingenuous for either candidate to act as if this is anything different. The difference is how they'll do it, not that they will do it.

Neither candidate is proposing any radical change. The difference is how each proposes to manage taxes. My opinion--regardless of their promises, it will come down to business as usual. American has moved on from the George Bush, Carl Rove policies of the past, and Pailn is a part of that tired, worn out politics. THE HISTORICAL ASPECT OF TAXES

Tariffs were the largest source of federal revenue from the 1790s to the eve of World War I, until it was surpassed by income taxes.

The first federal statutes imposing the legal obligation to pay a federal income tax were adopted by Congress in 1861 and 1862 to pay for the Civil War. The 1862 law levied a 3% tax on incomes above $800, rising to 5% for incomes above $10,000. Rates were raised in 1864. This income tax was repealed in 1872, but a new income tax statute was enacted as part of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act in 1894.[4]

The United States Constitution specified Congress could impose a "direct" tax only if it was apportioned among the states according to each state's census population.[5] In its 1895 decision the Supreme Court held in the case of Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. that a tax on income from property (a tax on interest, dividends or rent) was a direct tax under the Constitution, and so had to be apportioned.

The apportionment requirement made income taxes on property practically impossible, and Congress did not want to limit the income tax solely to a tax on wages. Therefore, in 1909 Congress proposed the Sixteenth Amendment, which became part of the Constitution in 1913 when it was ratified by the required number of states.

Field Dressed

When I heard of Sarah Palin's unprecedented clothing and makeup costs, my thoughts went to three areas.

First--the way in which her ambition overshadows all. John Bitney, an important aide to Palin, who has known her since high school, and served in a central position in Gubernatorial campaign, has noted the persistence of that ambition throughout her career. It is unique, even among politicians I have seen, in that there seems to be absolutely no hesitation between thought and utterance--indeed, there seems to be no thought, just a fierce competitiveness and drive to win from which words emerge, ordered around a long determined and certain world view.

For Palin, there is no contradiction between saying that one is representative of average "hockey moms" and fervently going on a RNC funded shopping spree the likes of which has never been seen in Vice Presidential candidate history. Why? Because both are right. Why? Because that's what good people do--and we are good. And beneath--reflecting the absolutely stubborn and fierce determination that defines her--I'm going to have what I think is right, and do what I need to win.

Second--I thought of the hoarding mentality that can emerge when some are presented with unexpected, rare opportunity that might be snatched away--to take advantage of the moment while they can, to reap the spoils while they are before you, to use all parts of the animal. Such an impulse no doubt contributed to the splurge, and stood in such stark contradiction to the campaign's message that it was necessary to later state that the stockpile would be donated to Charity after the campaign.

Why this charitable spirit did not accompany the initial purchases went unaddressed, as did the thoughts of the Joe and Jane plumbers who had contributed to the campaign without the intention of purchasing a red leather jacket from Saks. However, they were out of sight and she was likely as determined in mind as always-- to shop with the best of them, with the enthusiasm vigor and competitiveness that is her hallmark. Have no doubt--if McCain were to win and Palin were to become President, there would be a good deal of this type of impulsive, unconsidered action--and an unprecedented amount of cleaning up of the messes left behind.

Third, I recalled a statement made last week--that Palin's handlers have to keep her from becoming depressed upon learning of negative press coverage.

I found this particularly important. When you look at Palin, you see a constant dynamic: a millisecond of anxiety--how did I get here, I don't know this, what I am supposed to do--met immediately by the instant determined response--this is what I will say, this is what I will do, and I will say it as fast as I can, even before I think about it, I already know that it is true.

Like an undersized and combative guard in basketball, the emphasis is on the quick cut, fast and direct--not whether it is right, but whether it is quick, certain, charming, and made. If she says it fast enough, she can never be caught.

This is admirable as a scrappy basketball player and no doubt contributes to affection for her--but in a job which requires thought, it is disastrous. When so much is based on the immediate, unconsidered impulse--the fusion of what is "good" and what is good for me; nothing receives deliberate, planned thought, and all too often, as in this case, we'll just have to fix it afterward.

Like McCain, she is supremely unreflective. Restive, dissatisfied with deliberation and direction, determined to do things her own way, appearing to itch to strike out immediately on her own--as she has begun to do several times in this latter part of the campaign--she will act on these impulses. If depressed, she will act on the basis of that depression, immediately reactive, without thinking of its impact and contribution to her actions.

For Palin, there is no contradiction, no incongruity, between defiantly avowing her stance as an everyday "hockey mom", fighting for the "Average Joes" against the elitists, and marching into Neiman Marcus armed for $75,000 of subsidized shopping. Both are done with the drive, immediacy and action that are permitted through the removal of consideration or thought--e.g., buy, baby, buy.

Given this, if McCain were elected and Palin to become President, a $150,000 shopping spree might be the least of our concerns.

UPDATE: As predicted, today an adviser to the McCain campaign reported that Palin was "going rogue", increasingly striking out on her own

A few months ago, he admitted to my colleague, Michael Scherer, that Barack Obama's economic plan would reduce taxes for most people.

Maverick Personality Disorder

Palin may reject complicated scientific definitions.

Despite this, McCain and Palin have managed to make a contribution to the scientific literature.

Before this campaign, the term "maverick" was used loosely, imprecisely.

Now, on the basis of extensive behavioral observations and study, we can firmly say what a "maverick" actually is.

It's a personality disorder:

Maverick Personality Disorder 400.00 (Cluster B)

Maverick Personality Disorder is defined by a tendency to make rash, impulsive decisions that are regarded as both bold and correct--even if the decision directly contradicts another "bold" and "correct" decision that has been made only moments before. This impulsivity is to be distinguished from that seen in Borderline Personality Disorder in that in the latter disorder, self-destructive behavior is overt and intentional, whereas in Maverick Personality Disorder, the impulsive behavior is largely self-destructive, but the individual is rarely aware of it, instead thinking that they are acting "from their gut" in a reasonable fashion.

Sharp mood swings, dramatic gestures, and statements that reflect poor judgment and at times reduced perception of reality (e.g. "the fundamentals of the economy are sound") often occur in the disorder.

A. Three of the following symptoms, displayed in a persistent fashion over a period of 1 year, are necessary for the disorder:

a) Impulsive, rash thoughts and decision-making, often on matters of considerable long-term importance, the impact of which may have major deterimental effects on the individual or others. The impulsive decisions are often justified by such statements as being a "courageous thinker", and by disavowing thought and deliberation as negative characteristics. Notably, despite repeated negative outcomes of this impulsive decision making, the individual still maintains that this behavioral style is correct, and will become testy and irritable when challenged, or when reminded of previous negative outcomes. Ideas that are entirely at odds with each other may be seen concurrently, and such contradictions may be presented by the individual as entirely rational.

2) Dramatic, sweeping, impulsive and grandiose gestures that are meant to change a situation in its entirety, yet are often poorly thought through. The individual may present these acts as gallant and heroic, yet the individual often appears desperate, and provides only a paper-thin rationale for the efficacy of the actions.

3) Extreme mood swings or changes in affect, from apparently happy, to extreme anger and rage. Often these emotions will occur simultaneously, as in the "angry grimacing smile."

4) Binges, sprees or reckless/dangerous behavior without recognizing the potential consequences of such behavior, such as shopping sprees, entering interviews without knowledge of the subject at hand, or naming Vice Presidential candidates without sufficient vetting.

5) "Going Rogue": The tendency to stray from previous professional, social and personal commitments in an effort to protect the self.

6) Dissociative Speech Disturbances: The marked tendency to speak for extensive period of time without any apparent linkage between speech centers and centers of actual thought. The individual may appear entirely confident in what they are saying, speaking at length without pause, without displaying any deliberation, cerebration, contemplation or any other forms of thought whatsoever. With these speech disturbances may occur various accompanying behaviors, such as winking, thumb-raising, etc.

7) Dissociative Changes in Ideation: The individual may disavow major aspects of what they claimed to be the center of their beliefs--e.g., the viability of major tax cuts for the wealthy.

8) Verbal Echolalia: The seemingly uncontrollable repetition of certain words and phrases, even when they appear to have ritualistic meaning or have little or no purpose, remaining utility, or underlying truth. E.g., "My friends", "Socialist", "Joe the Plumber".

B. These behaviors must cause marked impairment in one's professional activities or campaign, and are obsessively maintained even when their destructive impact is clear.

C. These behaviors cannot occur exclusively during a period of Bipolar/Manic Depressive Illness, Major Depression, or political inactivity.

Codes for severity:

MPD Mild 400.01: Mutters to self and wanders grumpily during debate; threatens to attack Russia because it is in view;

MPD Moderate 400.02: Races to "save economy" that he claims is fundamentally sound; Appeals to others as "Average Mom", then wears $150,000 in wardrobe and makeup;

MPD Severe 400.03: Invokes "Joe the Plumber" despite long past sell-by date; Sits down in interview with Katie Couric.

Palin was..is and will always be a novice - always told what to do - always one step behind. She is really a follower and not a leader. She was hand carried by the machine, from the state of Alaska, that is 99 percent registered Republican into first: The mayors office then carried into the Governors office. Too bad they coudn't carry her into the white house. By her actions, she cares only about her political future while her family goes from drug crisis to pregnancy. She is a wack job and she should never ever be allowed anywhere near a real position of importance!

In 2012, I don't really see here getting anywhere against the likes of Huckabee or Romney. They will chew her up and spit her out with her lack of experience and her violations with abuse of power. Additionally, Bristol Palin and her bastard kid will be fair game in Republican politics. Just ask McCain if Bush let family issues slide when he ran against Bush. This is as far as she will ever get if you ask me. (thankfully!)

The eight years that Obama will be in office will allow Palin to get some actual experience as a Governer and maybe learn some "stuff" about our great country. She might even have some time to study about them "foreigners". In 2016 she has a real chance. I rember saying "oh, no one would every elect an idiot actor to be President" and then "oh, we're definately not dumb enough to elect "W" (the most inexperienced and ill-equiped person to ever take office) So I would say she definately has a shot, unless Hef recruits her to move into the mansion first.

I'm as far as you can get from a Palin fan, having said that, I fail to see how this is an issue. Of course she is thinking about 2012!!! What running VP wouldn't? Specially one having to run under the McCain campaign. She did make an inappropriate comment but what else is new with Palin? One can even argue she was being honest. Besides, she is campaigning hard and drawing even larger crowds than McCain himself, which increases her sense of success (imagine how you'd feel if every town you went to people drove in hordes to hear you speak and everytime you turn on the TV your footage was playing). It doesn't surprise me though, that she doesn't realize she is also doing her part to sink the ticket. Yes, she is energizing the base but scaring away everyone else!

One could have argued (putting aside that his political career is over) that John Edwards was under-utilized by the eunuch Kerry campaign '04 and that Edwards' instincts would have been more successful than Kerry's inept campaigning. Yet Palin cannot make that claim, she jumped onto the stage without having done her homework and it showed, over and over. Her blunders made her a national joke and now her own lack of introspection makes her think she is the face of the republican party.

I can't wait to see how those GOP politicians and pundits who virtually worship her now treat her candidacy in the 2012 primaries. Let's see how long their "love" survives.
