Come on Andrew - there are - literally - millions more millionaires today in Amercia than there were in Eisenhower's day. Let's be real. I wouldn't be surprised if it's ten times the number. Therefore comparing rhe revenue intake of Ike's 91% to Obama's 36% is highly misleading.

McCain seems to be clutching at straws now in the closing moments of the campaign. He can't stick terrorist or Muslim or whatever at Obama, now it's just trying out if socialist sticks. It's just lame the way they reason this whole scenario and their arguments seem very labored. You can tell the tone of desperation in their lack of a good, convincing argument and it seems hastily thought out just like all other previous attacks. Worse for McCain is that it may again backfire like all previous attempts.

The issue isn't that McCain believes that Obama is a "socialist", as you point out from a different angle, the point is to have a word that sums all "that" up with all the people who are swayed or frightented by stray words. Its just another tactic in the Fear Game. You would think that the Secret Service or the FBI or Army Intelligence when he hung in in Iraq with Petraeus would have blown the whistle on Obama if the was not meant to know state secrets and was the radical that the right would paint. And would the Generals and Admirals be standing up with Obama if he was....?Thank God, Thank God that it doesn't seem to be working this time.

Another twist for another time is to show how much transfer of wealth from the bottom rungs to the top 2% has happened over the Bush 8yrs. Now that is interesting. People have stated that this was about $600B from the bottom 98% to the top 2%. That's a transfer of wealth the Republicans can understand and appreciate.

Andrew Romana clearly has a bias for a candidate and is using his media position to campaign for and be an Obama apologist. BHO has a very clear and consistent pattern of associating with marxists and socialists, and worse - his language and words through his political career are those of socialist ideals, unashamed - Obama identifies democratic capitalism as a failed system and prefers socialism - unequivacobly - he professes the very essence of socialism as the central theme of his polical agenda. He is preying on an economic downturn to swamp America, Obama is promising a 'grass is greener' knee jerk reaction for Americans. You can mock and geer those that suggest BHO is a socialist - but the fact is even BHO identifies and sympathizes with socialists and Andrew Romana refuses to a) understand what socialism and marxism is, and b) do some real objective journalistice research and reporting based on facts and actually uncover and report. But what else would expect, look at where his pay-check comes from - Obama headquarters. Beware of what you wish for.

Who is this group? Why, it's all of our veterans who have served our nation in times of war and peace. How so?

Senator McCain stands up in front of veterans groups wherever he goes and pulls out his quote from George Washington on the need to take care of returning veterans. Meanwhile, McCain has one of the very worst voting records when it comes to veterans issues of any legislator past or present.

MartyR hits the nail right on the head! Stop believing all of the LIES that McCain and Palin are dishing out to you and go with your guts. I think deep down, all Americans want change and it is just not going to come with McCain and Palin. Truth hurts for Republicans because they do not want to believe that their candidate is not the right one for our country at this given point in time. I watched two other Democrats lose to Bush only to see our country go to hell in a handbasket. ENOUGH!

Can't wait until next Tuesday when the Democrats take back Washington and try to rectify all the wrong that has been done the past 8 years. Step aside Republicans....there is going to be a new sheriff in town!

Last I heard, Transcanada Pipeline can't fulfill construction of pipeline from Alaska because Canaddian government land and native rights (as to their land) plus environment al issues are at stake here. Don't underestimate the native rights in Canada. These huge oil companies have already proven over a period of time, how much damage to the environment they've already done. It's outrageous and cleaning it up isn't an option. The Canadian natives usually accept a monetary option for the damage and they relocate.

I would hope Canadian's enmasse will fight this proposed new pipeline from Alaska.

If Transcanada had their way, they would proceed asap. This will be held up in the courts for years...U.S. should consider other means of transporting their precious oil...I'm sure Canadian oil tankers would be more than happy to oblige.

After Bush took office, and for 8 years he has redistributed wealth to CEOs, large corporations, and wealthy people by means of tax credits. Now we are using tax dollars to bail out the SAME wealthy that have received large (golden parachute) bonuses on top of all that. RONALD REGAN WAS THE TRUE MAVERICK...NOT MCCAIN. RONALD REGAN REDISTRIBUTED WEALTH by way of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Do any of you remember those days? Well, I do and was the last time I voted republican. Low Income people pay taxes just as the wealthy; however, low income folks are barely getting by before paying taxes. I truly appreciated the Regan Administration for backing the Earned Income Credit (EIC). I was an E4 in the Navy, a mother of 3 children and living paycheck to paycheck. REGAN made it possible for me to buy extra coats, shoes, socks, and a cheap computer for my kids. McCain is not a Maverick in my eyes because he is bashing Obama for wanting to do the RIGHT thing while he has supported giving to the wealthy under George Bush policies 90 percent of the time. Why should the wealthy continue to get wealthier by means of the middle to low income taxpayers? Bush has given tax credits (redistribution of wealth) to CEOs with annual salaries from 10 Million dollars a year, plus the Golden Parachute Bonus ranging from $25 to $52 MILLION DOLLARS PER CEO ANNUALLY. I am not stupid, but tax credit dollar amount the CURRENT CEOs/Large Cooperation’s are receiving is CRAZY MONEY when compared to the $1,500 dollars EIC Tax Credit received from the Regan Administration SMALL CHANGE my friends. RONALD REGAN was the MAVERICK not JOHN MCCAIN... OBAMA/BIDEN is CLOSER TO BEING A MAVERICK THAN MCCAIN ANY DAY. It's amazing how McCain is using little people like Joe the bus driver, Sally the teacher and Tom the brick masonry, and turning them against the very things that can help them. He is NOTHING like the Maverick I know.

I am a veteran also as with McCain. During the second debate; he stood there with the veteran in the crowd and made it appear that he supported veterans. How is it possible that Obama's exact words "redistribution of wealth" do not mean redistribution of wealth? And when he said the courts failed to address redistribution, and followed that comment by telling the listeners that community organizers should take up that cause, it is not possible to be intellectually honest and also conclude that he was complaining that 'redistribution' was considered by someone. Listen to the interview. Just as he does now, Obama spoke very clearly and you can not (honestly) mistake his internt.

I find it incredibly interesting to see so many people upset about "wealth redistribution". Our income tax system is based upon wealth redistribution, that's how a 'graduated tax system' works; people making relatively little money pay little tax, and people making relatively large amounts of money pay relatively larger taxes. I'd love to hear someone who classifies his/herself as against 'wealth redistribution' to define the term for me. Isn't almost any government service a function of wealth redistribution? Example: our tax dollars fund the interstate highway system. Our money (wealth) is taken by the government and used (redistributed) to build and maintain interstate highways. Is that a problem? Should we stop building/maintaining interstate highways? How about our armed forces? What about the United States Postal Service? These services are all products of "wealth redistribution". What is acceptable wealth redistribution, and what is unacceptable?

On my way to dinner last night I passed one of the homeless guys that frequents the area, holding a sign that read 'Vote Obama, I need the money.' In the restaurant, my waiter had a 'Obama 08' button on his apron. When the bill came, after some thought, I decided not to tip the waiter and explained to him that while he had given me outstanding service, his Obama button made me think that he obviously believes in and agrees with Senator Obama's plan to redistribute the wealth of the nation. I told him I was going to redistribute his tip to someone that I deemed to be more in need-the homeless guy sitting outside. He stood there dumbstruck and then angrily told me he worked for his money, the homeless guy is a beggar and capped it off by telling me where I could spend my afterlife (it's very warm there) before storming away. I walked outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him he should thank the waiter with the blonde goatee inside as I, like Mr. Obama, had decided who could use the money more. The homeless guy stared at me with a stunned look but appeared grateful. As I walked away it was apparent that this rather unscientific redistribution of wealth experiment had left the homeless guy pretty happy about the money he received but did not earn, but the waiter was visibly upset for having money he earned given away to someone who did absolutely nothing for it. I guess this redistribution of wealth plan from Obama is going to take a while to catch on.

The Republican party has been spreading the wealth with my money for as long as I've been working.Nixon took away tax cuts on credit cards,cars and all other accounts that charge interest.After they took these cuts from the middle class they passed along the savings to the wealthiest among us.Reagan was the worst of them all.He actually strong robbed the middle class to redistribute wealth to the so called upper class.He made Federal Employees pay into Medicare. Medicare is something that federal employees donot need we already have health insurance that will take care of us in our retirement.Now john mccain comes along with a slice of bread in one hand to distract us, while his gang of thieves are robbing us from behind.Think about it. he says that he will cut your taxes by $400 if you are making $42,000 a year but if you have employer paid health insurance he's going to tax that.For me that will be a tax increase of $8,500 a year.So where is the tax cut for me or you.it's not there it will be redistributed to the wealth.

OK ... I hear that the only ones who fear Obamas tax plan are the are those in the top 5% income bracket, those who take in more than a quarter million $ a year, the very same who have had easy under Republican rule.The rest of us will get a welcome relief from the Obama plan. Its not a re-distribution of wealth but a re-distribution of the tax burden to those who can aford it ----- I for one am afraid of Obama's tax plan and I make nowhere near 250k. It's because I'm a realist. When Obama can't raise enough tax revenue (and history proves he won't be able to) that 250k level will be lowered & lowered & lowered. Clinton promised the same thing in his first term and then ended up raising taxes on everyone making 30k or more. And if you take a minute to read the fine-print of Obama's plan you'll see that he will issue refundable tax credits. That means the roughly 40% of people who pay NO Federal taxes will be receiving a check from the Gov't. That is income redistribution by any definition, even this life long Democrat voting second generation Latino American veteran can figure that out. Please convince me that I am wrong!

Consider that $10 is worth a whole lot more to that homeless man than it was to the waiter; but the relative difference between that homeless man and the waiter is exponentially smaller than the worth of that $10 is between you and anyone of the thousands of billionaires living in this country. 10 bucks isn’t just 10 bucks. It’s all relative. And the clearest determiner of how hard a person works is not the amount of money in their bank account.

A school teacher paying $1000 lower in taxes may be able to afford, what? An extra 2 month’s groceries for their family? Compared to the business man who now has to pay an extra 3%, and maybe should think about taking the 10-day Alaskan Cruise as opposed to the 12-day Mediterranean Cruise they’re planning.

The American Dream means equal opportunity for ALL to EARN wealth, not just for a few to inherit it and pass it on. Barack’s plan will better suit you and me, and that waiter; and it will benefit not only those receiving tax breaks, but those paying 3% more. That’s 100% of this country.

Currently, approximately 40 percent of Americans do not pay federal income taxes, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. But most of those people do pay payroll taxes. Those who pay federal income taxes would have the tax credit come out of what they owe the government; those who don't pay federal income taxes would receive a check in the mail.

In other words, Obama's tax credit is designed to offset payroll taxes, not income taxes. He has promised a "refundable income tax credit" to reimburse workers for up to $500 of their payroll taxes. Note that Obama is not saying that he will cut "income taxes"; he is saying that he will "cut taxes." It is an important distinction. The McCain camp equates all taxes with income taxes.

If you've read Obama's fiscal policy, you know that there is no way to pay for the sweeping welfare reform he espouses by the tax increase on the $250k+ earners.

No, to pay for these welfare programs, he will need to drop that threshold to where it will broaden the tax base sufficiently. And, if you've hear him speak about it (several times now) you know that he will have no problem pushing that agenda.

He will have to redefine who is "wealthy". What's the number? $150k? $100k?

Hey marty27d...we all make choices in life and if you choose to be a teacher, knowing full well where your income level will be versus an entrepenuer or businessman who takes the risk in return for a potentially higher reward, why should the risk taker supplement anyone elses income? Why is it that when someone is presented with a logical arguement or facts they cannot refute they resort to name calling? I pay my taxes to support police and fire depts., infrastucture and schools and that homeless guy I gave the $10.00 to when he cashes his welfare check or bunks in at the city shelter. One of Barack Obama's most potent campaign claims is that he'll cut taxes for no less than 95% of "working families." He's even promising to cut taxes enough that the government's tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% -- which is lower than it is today. It's a clever pitch, because it lets him pose as a middle-class tax cutter while disguising that he's also proposing one of the largest tax increases ever on the other 5%. But how does he conjure this miracle, especially since more than a third of all Americans already pay no income taxes at all? There are several sleights of hand, but the most creative is to redefine the meaning of "tax cut."

For the Obama Democrats, a tax cut is no longer letting you keep more of what you earn. In their lexicon, a tax cut includes tens of billions of dollars in government handouts that are disguised by the phrase "tax credit." Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand no fewer than seven such credits for individuals:

- A $500 tax credit ($1,000 a couple) to "make work pay" that phases out at income of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple.

- A $4,000 tax credit for college tuition.

- A 10% mortgage interest tax credit (on top of the existing mortgage interest deduction and other housing subsidies).

- A "savings" tax credit of 50% up to $1,000.

- An expansion of the earned-income tax credit that would allow single workers to receive as much as $555 a year, up from $175 now, and give these workers up to $1,110 if they are paying child support.

- A child care credit of 50% up to $6,000 of expenses a year.

- A "clean car" tax credit of up to $7,000 on the purchase of certain vehicles.

Here's the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be "refundable," which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer -- a federal check -- from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. Once upon a time we called this "welfare," or in George McGovern's 1972 campaign a "Demogrant." Mr. Obama's genius is to call it a tax cut.

The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.

The total annual expenditures on refundable "tax credits" would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as "tax credits," the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is.

The political left defends "refundability" on grounds that these payments help to offset the payroll tax. And that was at least plausible when the only major refundable credit was the earned-income tax credit. Taken together, however, these tax credit payments would exceed payroll levies for most low-income workers.

It is also true that John McCain proposes a refundable tax credit -- his $5,000 to help individuals buy health insurance. We've written before that we prefer a tax deduction for individual health care, rather than a credit. But the big difference with Mr. Obama is that Mr. McCain's proposal replaces the tax subsidy for employer-sponsored health insurance that individuals don't now receive if they buy on their own. It merely changes the nature of the tax subsidy; it doesn't create a new one.

There's another catch: Because Mr. Obama's tax credits are phased out as incomes rise, they impose a huge "marginal" tax rate increase on low-income workers. The marginal tax rate refers to the rate on the next dollar of income earned. As the nearby chart illustrates, the marginal rate for millions of low- and middle-income workers would spike as they earn more income.

Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned from working overtime or taking a new job. As public policy, this is contradictory. The tax credits are sold in the name of "making work pay," but in practice they can be a disincentive to working harder, especially if you're a lower-income couple getting raises of $1,000 or $2,000 a year. One mystery -- among many -- of the McCain campaign is why it has allowed Mr. Obama's 95% illusion to go unanswered.

I am sorry, but this article is an absolute, blatant misrepresentation of the truth... in other words, a LIE. The definition of socialism is, as Webster's says, "A theory or system of social reform which contemplates a complete reconstruction of society, with a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor." Mr. Romano, please explain to me how taxing a certain group of people based on income level is not socialism? There should not be tax brackets in the first place, but increasing taxes on those who have more to give to those who have less cannot be called anything different than socialism and wealth redistribution. How about if the "middle class", or the "poor" are required to go door to door to collect the extra 3% and see that they are basically STEALING! It is, as Frederick Bastiat called it, "legalized plunder." The government makes it legal to steal from one person and give to another. If people looked at it the way that it really is they would realize that they don't want to steal. We punish someone for robbing a bank that makes a lot more than $250,000, how can we then all of the sudden legalize the ability to steal from someone who makes more and give to someone who makes less against the wishes of the person who makes the quarter million. Just because someone makes more money than someone else does not make it ok to steal from them just to try to make it "fair." I don't plan on making $250k per year, and I haven't ever made that much - not even close in fact, but this is absolutely preposterous. It is completely restricting the liberties of the alleged "wealthy." Stealing is never right, whether the precious Messiah Obama legalizes it or not.

Just wanted to ask a question:

I own a small business that grosses 1.7 million a year and employ 20 people. My payroll=$600,000 a year and I offer health insurance. My net profit after payroll, insurance, over all overhead is $100,000 and I am taxed at the 37% rate as I am classified as a S Corp. Does the Democratic tax increase tax on the gross of 1.7 million or the net amount? I also hold a full time position as a nurse and from that perspective- the doctors average is 150,000=450,000 depending on their specialties-they are considered small business and fall under the S Corp umbrella-if their taxes increase,won’t that be passed on to their patients and therefore healthcare cost would increase.

Why is socialism such a bad thing?

I'm just going to lay out a lesson about taxes because most of you are getting it wrong, which is ridiculous.. while 40% of people do not pay income taxes, i.e. taxes at the end of the year to the IRS, 40% are not unemployed or collecting welfare. That 40% are getting a refund from the IRS based on guess what.. taxes they paid during the year to the IRS- which is payroll taxes, interst to mortgage loans, property taxes, education credits, child care credit, earned income credit, capital gains/losses, etc.. Now some people have gotten extremely clever and claim the highest amout of exemptions they have, invested that money in an interest bearing account during the year and voila, earned more wealth at the end without having to pay more taxes. But that is getting away from the tax lesson. Obama is looking to give more of the same to that 40% and possible more...AND I BET A LEAST A PORTION OF THAT 40%, MAKE MORE MONEY THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT. How do they manage it? Loopholes in the tax code, which favor the wealthy, not the poor.

Okay that leaves 60% of America people... majority of people that have to pay income taxes each year, are those that do not have kids, own homes, or are in school or those that are self-employed that either dont file properly or dont have enough in expenses to lower their self-employment tax or those that claim too many exemptions or dont have enough taxes taken out.

I only make 50,000 a year but I always wind up owing because I take too many exemptions, its my money and I like to spend it, rather foolishly, I might add. But that is my business. Would I like to pay less, you bet ya... so guess what, anyone that lowers my tax rate, is awesome...and that is what Obama is proposing.

Before anyone starts jumping to conclusions that Obama is going to lower the threshhold from 200, 000 for individuals or 250,000 for families, look up the tax rates under previous administrations.

And finally taxes go to infrastructure, social security programs, unemployment, etc, they pay for other government programs, so taxing the higher bracket so the middle class gets more of a tax credit is not giving money to those that dont work.

During Reagan's adminstration the 1986 Tax Act completely revamped the income tax rates. The schedule of numerous income tax rates on ordinary income were replaced with two income tax rates on ordinary income, 28% and 15%.

The rates stayed there until the first Bush forgot his "read my lips" pledge and raised income tax rates in his first term; he never got a chance at a second term. Clinton followed with a further increase while in his first term. The second Bush lowered income tax rates to the level they are at now, which top rate is still higher than the Reagan 28% top rate.

Perhaps Reagan got it right. 28% is a little less than one-third of a person's income, which when state income taxes are added to that, government is taking a full third of an individual's income in income taxes. If the federal and state governments can't live on that percentage of an individual's income, shame on them. Add to the income tax property and sales tax and an individual's tax burden is pretty stiff. Payroll taxes probably could be excluded in estimating the total tax burden, since in theory, at least. those taxes are paid towards an individual's social security retirement benefits and medical care benefits in old age, assuming those systems are still viable when individuals reach that age.

Guess we'll be trying another approach in about a week. We'll have to wait to see how that works, whatever that turns out to be.

You do a good job of misrepresenting the tax rate structure during Reagan's presidency. In fact, until his last year in office, the highest marginal rate was 38.5% or higher, with the highest rate actually 50% or higher from 1981 through 1986. Reagan's 15% and 28% rate structure was only in place for a single tax period. And you also unfairly distort the effect of the 28% rate - because of the progressive nature of the tax system, a taxpayer in that bracket is not actually being taxed at that rate on all of his income. If you actually look at the historic tax rates, you'll see that the federal government has regularly tinkered with the rates, trying new things, experimenting. We'll likely continue to see it in the future - after all, we're going to have to pay back all that borrowed money at some point, right?

If she Pardons Ted Stevens, this will also be the Dagger in her Heart and Political Career.

The McCain camp gambit comes after conservative writers have repeatedly pressed for media outlets to write about the rather tenuous connections between Obama and Khalidi, an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights.

Specifically, National Review writers want much more attention paid to the association, given that the LA Times has reported that Khalidi lavished praise on Obama at a farewell party in Chicago at which Bill Ayers was also present. (Other writers have accused Khalidi of being an aide to Yasser Arafat, a claim which Marc Ambinder and Ari Berman have suggested is not credible.)

In regards to Khalidi, however, the guilt-by-association game burns John McCain as well.

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.

Big Note: A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank. (See grant number 5180, "West Bank: CPRS" on page 14 of this PDF.)

The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when John McCain joined IRI as chairman in January. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."

Of course, there's seemingly nothing objectionable with McCain's organization helping a Palestinian group conduct research in the West Bank or Gaza. But it does suggest that McCain could have some of his own explaining to do as he tries to make hay out of Khalidi's ties to Obama.
