The Presser: What You Couldn't See on TV

Holly Bailey

The Teleprompter. As has been duly noted by other reporters on the scene last night, Obama ditched his usual teleprompter—the two screens at either side of his podium. Instead, Obama did what John McCain used to do during the campaign and read his text from a massive flat screen TV positioned directly below the straight-on camera. Still, a teleprompter at a press conference? It shows how worried Obama is about getting his words exactly right. But we still think it's strange, especially for a statement so short.

The Staff. A few minutes before Obama took the podium, more than a dozen of his staffers came into the room to watch, including several press aides, speechwriter Jon Favreau; chief of staff Rahm Emanuel; press secretary Robert Gibbs and senior advisers David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett. From the get-go, Axelrod and Gibbs reminded your Gaggler of baseball coaches in the dugout: Both were chewing gum, frantically at times, and watching Obama intently. Several times, during questioning, your Gaggler spied Axelrod nudge Gibbs and offer commentary, and Gibbs, chewing gum, would nod, rarely taking his eyes off Obama.

The Front Row. The Obama White House has made it clear they will be deviating from the way the Bushies organized the media for their events. While wire reporters and TV correspondents are mostly still on front row just as they were in the old administration, there were again new faces on row one last night—not that they got questions.  They included the New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza, Mike Memoli of Real Clear Politics and reporters from El Nuevo Dia, Puerto Rico’s largest daily newspaper, and the Afro-American Newspaper. Liberal radio show host Ed Schultz again scored a front row seat, but this time to Obama’s right instead of head-on.

It was HOT. Just like last month, the news conference was held in the East Room of the White House. But unlike last time, it was super hot in there. A TV reporter seated near your Gaggler worried about sweating his make-up off. It was hard to tell if it was the heat from the all the lights or if it was a thermostat thing. We do know that Obama likes it warm.

"Investment" is now the new lexicon for taxes. Government doesn't invest. It taxes, taking wealth from the private sector. Nothing he is doing will help the economy recover. He is stealing from us to build a permanent constituency that will be dependent on government. He uses a teleprompter because he's functionally illiterate without one. He likes to stay warm so he keeps HIS domicile heated to eighty degrees while scheming to make sure WE can't afford to stay warm in ours. The lights are slowly coming on in the eyes of the press. They are just starting to figure out they have been duped. They are heavily invested in the Messiah but even a rabid liberal will eventually figure out he is a total sham.

I wasn't aware that Obama was auditioning for the school play.  I see the idiotshphere is expanding to include another MSM outlet.

Why use a teleprompter? Because that’s what people do when they have important ideals to express and they want to do so in a clear and concise manner. When you don’t have that, you tend to say stupid things like " Mission accomplished " and " Bring it on". Or even make bad jokes about Special Olympics. That’s why we have those funny paper things called books. When you have something important to say, write it down to make sure you say it how you meant to. President Obama is not an " actor " like the ex-President you Republicans love so much, paid to recite what others have written for him. It's not a line in a script to be memorized and regurgitated. It is the peoples business and that requires a presentation that is professional and reflects the importance of the subject matter.

All of the people complaining about President Obama doing too much and should be concentrating only on the economy are now complaining about how he only talked about one thing, the economy. Now it's boring and did not inspire the people. Well, if it's inspiration you need, go to church. I need a President to tell me what he's going to do to fix the problems we have. Not someone to tell me every reason why not to do something and no suggestions on how to correct the issue.

And look at how the market has responded to his proposals. Every standard set by the “ talking heads” on the right is indicating progress. Housing is up, consumer purchasing is up, and confidence is growing. And what does the “loyal opposition” say in response?  “ I hope the Presidents ideals fail “ per Rush L., Bobby J. and Fred T. I guess in their minds, the economy is inching forward in spite of the economic stimulus plan not because of it. If we had done as they proposed and…. Wait, they haven’t purposed anything. So I guess their new ideal is “Nothing new but no to everything”.

And to those who consider the budget too large and wasteful, I say this. President Obama is investing in the American people with this budget. It says that if I, the government, give you better schools and provide you with access to better resources such as high speed Internet, affordable college loans and health care, you will in turn be able to better compete in a global economy. If I, the government, invest in rebuilding the infrastructure this country and not some foreign nation that we are at war with, that you the citizens will be able to do more with your business for less, faster and more reliably. And that by investing in new sources of energy now, we can create a worldwide demand for American products and not continue to import ourselves to the point that we have to lie about why we are fighting wars and losing American soldiers. And that if I, the government, adjust the tax code to better represent the majority of the population, that you the people will use the entrepreneurial sprit that has made this country the greatest nation ever on the face of the Earth, and create conditions for all to have access to success.

I’ll take my chances with and on the people of this country and not continue to defend the corporations whose greed, aloud to run amuck and unchecked for too many years, has led to the corruption of the entire free market system, as we knew it. How can we ever again trust them to do the right thing? So you die- hards keep hoping for failure. Keep trying to divide and conquer. Listen to your failed leaders and place partisanship ahead of what’s best for the entire country. You have never had the best interest of the majority of the people at heart anyway and we the people don’t need you. We will lead this country back to where it belongs.
