How Will Obama's Immigration Reforms Play with Democrats?

Holly Bailey

As President Obama prepares to head south of the border next week to meet with allies at the Summit of the Americas, the New York Times reports that Obama is gearing up to tackle what is traditionally a hot button issue at that forum: immigration. The Times reports, citing a White House official, that Obama plans to pitch an immigration reform plan that includes pathway to citizenship for the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. There are few other details on what exactly else he’ll build into the plan. Obama is expected to speak publicly on his immigration proposal in May and over the summer, the White House will convene working groups to examine the issue.

It’s a little unclear why the White House is leaking this information out now, though we guess it’s a move to possibly test the political waters on what will clearly be a divisive issue. Just ask George W. Bush, who saw his bipartisan proposal tank amid strong opposition from Republicans two years ago. The atmospherics are a lot different now—and not for the better. The economy is clearly not in a great place, with unemployment numbers on the increase. And that likely will only enhance the argument reform opponents made last time that legalizing immigrants could hurt U.S. jobs.  Obama appears to have learned some lessons from that last battle: He’ll apparently couch his proposal by arguing for more border protections and cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. The thing to watch is who in Congress will get on board with Obama. With some exceptions—including possibly, John McCain—the White House likely won’t attract much support from Republicans. But it’s Democrats who may be the biggest challenge for Obama. He'll need to support of the majority of his party for immigration reform to pass, but that won't be easy. Conservative Democrats, including the Blue Dog coalition in the House, weren’t very enthused about this issue the last time it came up. Will Obama's popularity among voters make the difference?

Lets all remember that this country was MADE by immigrants, so to all the people that posted previously, unless all your ancestors were of straight native american ancestry, YOU are also a descendant of immigrants. Most immigrants (not all) come to this country to make a better lives for themselves and their families. Most immigrants work hard and lead respectable lives. Most illegal immigrants however have to do this in the shadows, doing jobs that "americans" do not wish to do themselves, for a measly salary that an American employer is giving them and without any benefits at all. Besides that they are exploited by employers and live in fear of having their families torn apart. Not every family that has a member who is an illegal immigrant dragged themselves across the desert to have the wonderful job of picking potatoes for 16 hours per day. The immigrations laws in this country make it nearly impossible to come to this country and stay as a permanent resident, regardless of whether you are a dishwasher or the doctor who stays late to treat your child because you are worried they have had a fever for 2 days. Before you make all the assumptions that most people are making, take into consideration that the immigration system IS broken (why else would someone have to wait decades at a time to have their spouse or family member join them legally) and there is a very little opporturnity to make the USA your permanent home. So research people and then make an informed opinion, whatever that may be.

Here's my question for President Obama:  After you make 12 million illegal immigrants legal citizens, what's to stop more from coming?  What's the next move.  Did he even think of the next step?  Seriously.

He's assuming that making them legal citizens will end the problem.  It won't.  I can guarantee you that a majority of those people will not obtain the necessary document to make them citizens.  They don't WANT to be citizens.  They want to fly under the radar, and not pay taxes or pay into a system that helps support them.  It's asinine.

We create 138,000 legal citizens through naturalization every month.  Good thing we create 138,000 new jobs every month.  Oh wait, no we don't.  This is the LAST thing this country needs.  Unfortunately, the republicans are no better at running the country...so I doubt Obama will meet much opposition.

I can't believe I voted for you.
