More From the Dems: Leahy Says Specter will be Happier

Katie Connolly

Senator Patrick Leahy from Vermont, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is one of Specter's closest pals on the Hill. The two men have known each other for decades, and Specter is now the Ranking Member on Leahy's committee. He'll now serve as the number 2 Democrat. Here's what Leahy had to say today:

“Senator Specter called me this morning. He and I have been friends for 40 years.  We first met when we were both young prosecutors.  We have a particular friendship, and he wanted me to know before it became in the press. In talking with him, I had the impression that he went through much the same that Jim Jeffords of Vermont did.  I had the impression that Senator Specter had a feeling that the Republican Party, a great party in this country, had left him – not the other way around. I know how hard he has agonized. I believe he's going to be happier.”

For many in the GOP this is a sure sign things are improving in the GOP! A shift from conservativism permited GOP legislators to assume  they were to compromise, and reach acrossed the isle...while the DNC doesn't reach or compromise.

If this defection in particular is, in some way, the results of the tea partys I can't wait for the ones coming this 4th of July.

It seems Senator Specter insists on taxation without hesitation,he found the party where that's still welcomed.

................................Specter and a big majority of Americans accross the land know that the Republican Platform is wrong for America and the leadership that Bush provided was in the form of Plenty Of Poor Judgement...........And The Handwriting is on the Wall now for the GOP and what it says does not read their way for many years into the future!!!!!!!!

The Republican party left me as well.  I voted for a Democrat (Obama) for this first time in November.  As a PA registered Republican, I was toying with changing to an independent, & then decided to hang around to vote for Specter for the primaries.  Pat Toomey was my district's congressman, who I voted for but never liked much.  Congressman Charlie Dent is much better.  I would never vote for Toomey again.
