Postcard from Somalia: The Obama Restaurant & Cafe

Holly Bailey

Yes we can… run into Obamamania everywhere. Jeff Bartholet, Newsweek’s D.C. bureau chief (and your Gaggler’s boss—please forward all complaints to him, thank you very much) is traveling in Africa this week and stumbled upon the Obama Restaurant & Café—yes, named after that Obama—in Hargeisa, Somaliland. (This is an independent republic due west of Puntland, Somalia, an autonomous region where most of the pirates operate.) Here’s Jeff:

The owner, 35-year-old Mohammed Hassan, grew up in California and Oregon, but his family comes from what is now called the Republic of Somaliland. Hassan moved back to the city of Hargeisa three years ago. He says he wanted to "get away from Bush and Bushonomics for a while.

Hmm. Wonder if he serves beets. One more photo after the jump.

Okay, I guess I'm a little late to comment on this after all of the people who don't understand English sentences commented, but I just found this article and then the awful comments...

@jetgeorge, the point of the article mentioning pirates at all was to, in essence, clarify to any who believed otherwise that not all Africans are pirates. The article was simply saying that the restaurant was not located in Somliland, not the part of Somalia where some of the pirates often mentioned on the news came from. Always make sure you comprehend the article if you're going to criticize and attack it; otherwise you sound like an idiot, unless other idiots read your comment and don't realize how stupid your comment was.

@Abokor, the same goes to you. I admit that the quotation you cited was somewhat confusing if one would be reading it looking for errors or offensive content, but that doesn't make you right. By saying, "an autonomous region where most of the pirates operate," the author was referring to the last place she mentioned, Puntland Somalia. Thank you for restating exactly what she said and then accusing her of saying something she obviously did not. By the way, I believe the author of that quotation was Holly Bailey, not Mr. Bartholet. Be aware that by posting such a brainless comment, you basically flew a banner announcing, "I IS A IDIOT!!" for the world to see.

I think its a shame and a terribel disgrace when White men go out of their way to give HONEST, hardworking Africans (or for that fact, BLACKS in any part of the world), a bad reputation.

Yes, there are stupid men from parts of Somalia who are raging this terrible epic of piracy,

but to label all parts of Somalia as pirates is just dis-honest  and down-right un-justifiable.

Please, get your facts right before printing your stories. There are more hard-working Blacks in

Africa then there are stupid pirates.

(This is an independent republic due west of Puntland, Somalia, an autonomous region where most of the pirates operate.) ???

No, let me correct you Mr. Bartholet. Putland is (Where most of the pirates operate). Somaliland is an independent republic where piracy doesn’t exist.

It’s an insult to call pirates to honest and hardworking people of Somaliland so get ur facts right.
