Shining Light On Cheney's Hideaway

Daniel Stone

This just in from Newsweek's Eleanor Clift, a frequent purveyor of political anecdotes. She bring us an enlightening one here regarding the (quote) undisclosed location (unquote) we heard lots about in the days after Sept. 11. Here's Eleanor:

Ever wonder about that secure, undisclosed location where Dick Cheney secreted himself after the 9/11 attacks? Joe Biden reveals the bunker-like room is at the Naval Observatory in Washington, where Cheney lived for eight years and which is now home to Biden. The veep related the story to his head-table dinner mates when he filled in for President Obama at the Gridiron Club earlier this year. He said the young naval officer giving him a tour of the residence showed him the hideaway, which is behind a massive steel door secured by an elaborate lock with a narrow connecting hallway lined with shelves filled with communications equipment. The officer explained that when Cheney was in lock down, this was where his most trusted aides were stationed, an image that Biden conveyed in a way that suggested we shouldn’t be surprised that the policies that emerged were off the wall. Cheney has emerged as the leading critic of the Obama administration on national security, saying the president’s policies are making America less safe, and if there’s another attack, it will be Obama’s fault. This is tough stuff, but as the architect of the Bush administration’s policies on war and torture, he has a much bigger legacy to protect than the president he helped steer onto the shoals.

the hate spewed against Pres Bush and V.Pres Cheney is appalling-hey maybe you guys can be sent to jail under the new dumbocrat law-Biden is an gasbag-if the taxpayers have to pay for another hideout, let biden pay for it-the problem here is people do not how to handle the fact that George w Bush and Dick Cheney are honorable people and did a great job and that simply can not be handled by the libs, socialist etc-they can't believe that these two were good leaders-they cannot admit that they were wrong and very very thankful that they were in charge at not algore. What we now have is the worst wimpy government dictatorship-it smells with unconstitutional measures and a republican will be needed to sort out this country before 2012. Go to europe and hear how they are laughing. Thank you George W Bush and Dick Cheney for your service to this country-you both are missed. God Bless America-not Goddamn America!

Newsweek...my apologies for the length of my last post. My frustration in reading numerous "pseudo articles" on sites based on your blog post, essentially accusing VP Biden of doing something he did not, is frustrating. Falsehoods like that are allowed to spread too easily with today's blogs. There is little you are able to do with your commenters, but perhaps those who tire of lies or unwarranted attacks, can provide accuracy. WaPo was stellar. Fox surprised me. Politico was stand-up. I will be more cognizent of my post's length in the future. Thank you for your time.

Newsweek, it would be a nice move if you were to post a clarification to the misinformed, if possible. To the nasty commenters: This is funny. If you believe VP Biden divulged state secrets, I have a bridge I'd love to sell you. We're talking Joe Biden here...someone who has Chaired the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and one of our most powerful Senators. Biden has everything he says parsed and put under a microscope by Repubs and Fox to the point of shame. This particular business has been appropriately debunked: Fox News wrote a correction ("Biden did not reveal 'secret' bunker" (http://whitehouse.blogs.foxnews.com/2009/05/18/biden-did-not-reveal-the-secret-bunker/); as did Washington Post (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/reliable-source/2009/05/rs-bunker19.html); Politico was standup and removed the inaccurate story from their front page, and Huffington Post has had the false story reported by numerous sources, myself included. All this because many of us are seeing media running with false or half-truths or minor non-story mispeaks attributed to Joe Biden much too often. It has become rather odd. Biden gives speeches almost every day, but we don’t hear about them…only if a word is out of order. Shameful.
