Are There John McCain Birthers, Too?

David A. Graham

Yesterday, Public Policy Polling released results of a poll showing that 42 percent of Republicans nationwide do not believe Barack Obama was born in the United States. This sort of statistic has become old news by now. Despite overwhelming evidence that the president was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born citizen, a core of Americans remain convinced he was born overseas.

But with pollsters frantically trying to get in on the birther action, has anyone stopped to ask whether Sen. John McCain was born in the United States? McCain was actually born in Panama, but is considered a natural-born citizen, since he was born to an American military family stationed on a U.S. base. And, except for perhaps a small fringe, no one has questioned whether he would have been constitutionally qualified to be president.

We've poked around a bit and been unable to find any professional poll that asked Americans whether they believed McCain was born in the U.S. The fact that he was physically born outside the U.S. should have had no bearing on his own legitimacy, real or perceived, had he been elected president. But it would be interesting to see how many of the people who believe, incorrectly, that Obama was born outside the U.S. realize that McCain actually was not.

David Graham,

Are you a journalist or a puppet?  We all know that BO went after John McCain to show his long form birth certificate of which McCain obliged.  Where the heck were you???   BO and Hillary went as far as to pass a bill through the senate and signed it stating that John McCain was considered a Natural born citizen.  Again where were you???

Guess he thought by doing this good deed for McCain, that McCain would back off of his own situation where he does not have a long form BC.  Imagine that!  Have you seen BO's long form birth certificate?  You have?  Thought not!  And you thought your readers were not informed - maybe you should look in the mirror and say geez I guess I am the one that isn't informed.  I do hope that our upcoming student journalists will actually know how to write an editorial and back it with proof.  You are a lame journalist!

Being born on US or Kenyan soil makes one an American Citizen.  Both McCain and Obama are American Citizens under the 14th Amendment.

Article I of the Constitution requires Senators and Representatives to be American Citizens.

Article II of the Constitution requires that The President be a NATURAL BORN Citizen, that is no question as to his unadulterated American citizenship and allegiance.   Obama being born in Panama to US Citizens on assignment from the Government meets that requirement ("In transito")...

Obama's Kenyan father automatically conferred British citizenship to Obama at birth, something which Obama mentions in his book and referenced in several speeches.   He was/is a dual citizen, not Natural Born.   There's the rub.   It has nothing to do with place of birth, it's a question of single allegiance.

John McCain was born when there were only 13 original colonies and thus before there was a United STates.  Is is qualified as George Washington was."

ex-software engineer,

How many times are you going to repeat this stupid statement?

Too bad you're not an ex-idiot.
